NL East Notes: Nationals, Galvis, Hernandez, Braves

By Mark Polishuk | December 3, 2017 at 11:17pm CDT

Every team in baseball is monitoring the Giancarlo Stanton trade talks given their importance to the rest of the offseason transaction business, though the Nationals are perhaps watching closer than most, MASNsports.com’s Mark Zuckerman writes.  Should Stanton end up with the Dodgers, that would all but eliminate Los Angeles from pursuing Bryce Harper in free agency next offseason.  If the Giants or Cardinals (two teams that probably won’t be prime suitors for Harper next year) land Stanton, that leaves the Nats with another major threat in L.A. to worry about for Harper’s services, to go along with the interest he’s expected to draw from big spenders like the Yankees, Cubs, or Phillies.  Beyond that long-term issue, the Nats obviously also are concerned about the idea of Stanton going from an inter-division threat to a team that could end up facing Washington in the postseason.

Here’s some more from around the NL East…

  • Two Phillies middle infielders are drawing trade buzz, as the Padres have interest in shortstop Freddy Galvis, while the Angels continue to have interest in second baseman Cesar Hernandez, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports (subscription required).  The Halos have long been connected to Hernandez for their second base vacancy, with interest dating back to last offseason.  San Diego have also long been looking for an answer at shortstop, though the Friars are reportedly now just in the market for a short-term fix until top Fernando Tatis Jr.  is ready.  Galvis is such a fit, as he will hit free agency next winter.  While the Phils have J.P. Crawford and Scott Kingery ready to move into regular action in the middle infield, however, Rosenthal notes that the team is content having depth at second and short, and isn’t in any rush to move Galvis or Hernandez unless the right trade can be found.
  • The Braves have, somewhat surprisingly, “checked around about shortstops,” ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports (ESPN Insider subscription required).  Dansby Swanson is seen as the team’s shortstop of the future, though he struggled in his first full MLB season and was even briefly demoted back to Triple-A last summer.  A short-term addition could used by Atlanta to give Swanson more development time; Olney outlines the lack of teams looking for shortstops this winter, so the Braves could have a wide choice of the market.

Not sure why they treated Simmons like there was no hope his glove alone wouldn’t be worth the contract. Sure, I could understand the frustration with his bat not coming around, but his glove is that good. That good. Maybe they were so enamored with Albies — I don’t remember. Or they really, really liked Newcomb, but LAA really got the best of us – even if Newcomb somehow figures out how to go 9 without walking 5.

Please. Buster showing how clueless he really is. If Braves are looking at SS its more than likely for a backup position, or in Cozart’s case it could be with idea of him playing 3b

    2

    • RunDMC

Why not both? Cozart could be used similarly this year to BP last year – play SS starting the season while Swanson gets reps at AAA and builds into the season – then transition Cozart to 3B later in the season, just like BP did when Albies showed he was ready. AA might not have the same read on Swanson that Coppy did and he could be seeing his trade value or most likely, trying to better position him to succeed by allowing him to time at AAA.

Allowing Swanson to skip AAA when he was putting up pedestrian numbers at AA was a huge mistake, especially considering we weren’t in a pennant chase.

I wouldn’t mind a Cozart signing however Swanson needs to be playing every day at the big league level. He hit into a lot of bad luck last year i fully expect a rebound. DOB confirmed as much thats its more than likely a backup infielder they are looking at

Hos BABIP was .292. That isn’t bad luck actually, that’s a fairly average babip. The bigger problem is his hard contact on his fly balls. His wOBA on fly balls is .250 below average.

While I doubt they’re giving up on dansby this early, AA has no loyalty to dansby, so if he doesn’t produce, or doesn’t fit what AA wants in a ss, don’t be shocked if he’s traded

Why not Hernandez? We have zero middle infield prospects ready to contribute so it makes sense to look for a long term solution. Cesar may be costly but he’d also solve the 2B problem for the foreseeable future. I agree that Dee would be a nice option too

There have been plenty of opportunities for Cowart within the organization. He has a great arm and glove for 3B, but still is a AAAA hitter. For whatever reason, mechanical or mental, he can’t hit MLB pitching. Maybe that will come, but the team doesn’t have the luxury of waiting for his bat to awaken when 2B was an offensive black hole in 2017 (and previously).

Hernandez has three years of team control at fairly reasonable salaries. The problem is that the Angels don’t have anything the Phillies want. The Phillies have depth everywhere but not much high end talent. They wouldn’t be interested in back end of the rotation starters since they have more than they can pitch. The Angels aren’t trading their high end talent.

With Mondesi Jr. in place, I’m sure KC would entertain the right package for Whit Merrifield if it came their way especially if they are going to rebuild which I think would be silly 2 years removed from a WS win and also considering they could potentially have 5 picks in the top 50 based on where the big 3 land!

      There’s your rebuild right there…

I think Mondesi is basically just a younger version of Alcides Escobar, and Whit Merrifield plays second base and not shortstop anyway. I don’t see a correlation.

Idk how you can call the royals rebuild silly at this point. They held out as long as they could but you lose moose, Cain, and most likely Hosmer off a team that didn’t go to the playoffs with them the last 2 years I don’t see how you think you’ll be any better in the near future without them. Their farm system needs those picks because it’s real weak. They could rebuild it up easily though with all those picks and a deal of Merrifield, Duffy, and unfortunately Sal Perez. Move those guys make some good picks and you might have another a team in 4 years. They’re more than a couple pieces away for the foreseeable future.

For the same reason we would trade prospects for him when he’ll be a free agent before we are contending: we wouldn’t
If we want a stopgap, we are better off just re-signing Erick Aybar, signing Escobar or bringing up Jose Rondon.
And you said a year ago that we should trade Travis Jankowski for Jose Iglesias. Iglesias tanked this past season and with the Tigers now entering what looks to be a lengthy rebuild, they would be hard-pressed to even get Jankowski for him. Rebuilding teams like the Padres don’t trade prospects for rentals, plain and simple.

What an absolute trade rape. A 4/5 outfielder for a lower tier Starting SS. What a terrible suggestion last year! The prospect that you have to deal to get a guy like Freddy Galvis has maybe a 5% chance of being. A useful major leaguer. Your organizational #29 prospect is a long shot to ever be a quality big leaguer. About as likely as Galvis being a useful SS that you can flip again at the deadline.
