White Sox Have Made Formal Offer To Manny Machado

By Steve Adams | January 4, 2019 at 1:20pm CDT

Jan. 4: In a full column, Nightengale cites four sources in reporting that Chicago has indeed issued an offer to Machado. However, while there’s no specific dollar amount revealed, he suggests that it’s “likely closer to $200 million than $300 million” in total value.

Meanwhile, Fancred’s Jon Heyman characterizes the Sox as a “long shot” for Harper (Twitter link), perhaps further underscoring that Chicago is more focused on Machado. It’s worth noting, however, that Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times writes that the South Siders’ presentation to Harper “impressed [him] more than he anticipated.”

Regardless, a Machado agreement hardly seems imminent. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic writes (subscription required) that agent Dan Lozano is “barely engaging” teams on Machado at the moment and is instead “waiting for a team to jump.” The White Sox’ offer, while somewhat of a jump, doesn’t sound the be in the vicinity that most expected Machado to command.

Jan. 3: The White Sox have been frequently linked to both Bryce Harper and Manny Machado this offseason, but USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweets that they’re more engaged on Machado at the moment and recently extended a formal offer to the free-agent infielder. The ChiSox has not yet taken that step with Harper, Nightengale adds.

Details of the prospective contract aren’t known, though the very fact that a formal offer has been put forth is nonetheless notable. The White Sox have been motivated all offseason to add some established big league talent to their roster as they look to begin emerging from a rebuild, but to this point, the biggest names they’ve added have been reliever Alex Colome and right-hander Ivan Nova — both via the trade market. Adding Machado to the mix would be a clear signal that the Sox are earnestly attempting to turn the page.

The White Sox, though, have competition for both Harper and Machado, regardless of whether formal offers have been made or not. The Yankees and Phillies are reported to be active pursuers of Machado, while the Dodgers, Nationals, Phillies and Cubs are among the teams most prominently linked to Harper. In that same vein, Nightengale tweets that the Phillies’ signing of David Robertson today will likely turn their focus to both Harper and Machado, and other teams expect Philadelphia to be the high bidder on both free agents.

Similarly, WEEI’s Rob Bradford wrote earlier today that the Phillies’ pursuit of Harper and Machado could impact their approach to addressing the bullpen; Bradford suggested that the Phils, who had interest in Craig Kimbrel, would likely bow out on Kimbrel if they signed Harper or Machado. The fact that the Phillies proactively pursued a more affordable option for the back of their bullpen is of at least some note if there was a sense that they wouldn’t make a play for one of the top two position players and Kimbrel.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported yesterday that the White Sox were willing to make an offer of 10 years or more to Harper, though Bruce Levine of CBS Chicago/670 The Score followed that by saying the ChiSox weren’t willing to go beyond seven years for either Harper or Machado. Whatever the White Sox’ threshold is, they’ve apparently made their starting point known to Machado at this point. With Philadelphia having wrapped up some bullpen business earlier today, it stands to reason that they’ll follow suit in the relatively near future as well.

Explain? The Royals won 58 games last season and they might be even worse this year, especially if they trade Merrifield. They are an absolutely awful team that operates in the dark ages when stolen bases were king and pitchers didn’t strike anybody out. I was ecstatic when they won the WS a few years ago because I love underdog stories, but they are running their team in such a weird way. Terrance Gore on the Major League roster? Really?

When they trade Whit. It’s not a question of if, its a question of when. The Royals were bad in 2018 and have gotten worse since the season ended. In Las Vegas they are neck and neck with the Orioles for the #1 overall pick in the 2020 draft.

yeah i kind of agree with the majority here. it was really cool to see the royals make the world series a couple times without having the best roster but lets be honest, they are nooooooo where near a playoff run. at least the whitesox throw money around to have a shot. they still have prospects waiting to develop from the sale deal as well. plus the tigers have been selling off pieces and the indians seem to want to based on the rumors on this site last couple months so id say whitesox have a better shot at making the playoffs than a lot of teams in baseball. including my giants unfortunately

the Al Central was formed in 1994… the royals first made the playoffs from it was 2014… as a WC… in those 20 years they finished 2nd once… 3-5 every other year… don’t hold your breath on them being back in the playoffs anytime soon.

It’s a nice park; they play in a part of Chicago that is heavily Hispanic (I don’t know how much that matters to Machado, as he is Dominican but was obviously born in America; the Dominican neighborhood in Chicago is on the near Northside ). They have the money and they are rebuilding; they certainly won’t be worse than the Orioles next season. They have a relatively smart front office. He would be the biggest star on the team, which wouldn’t be the case in New York. While the White Sox have been overshadowed by the Cubs lately, they have exactly as many World Series titles in the 2000s and they’ve won as many WS as any team in the Central during that time frame.

Hated when Tigers sold their soul to “Comerica Bank” then they skipped out of Detroit to Texas. Why couldn’t they keep the name Tiger Stadium add Deux based on our French heritage? They didn’t sell it for that much money & are they that desperate for money?

They’re too busy getting offended by things online. They should go visit the neighborhood a couple times at night and then say how safe it is. It’s not like the suburbs where they live, where you can walk at night at 3 AM and nothing will happen.

Very true. the stadium is in the Bridgeport neighborhood, which the Daley family has called home for a very long time. The comment that the area is not safe is very untrue. You could be in wrigleyville or Gold Coast, one of the most expensive parts of Chicago, and still get mugged. I went to UIC and lived there my entire college career and that area wasn’t safe til about 15 years ago. The area argument is worn out.

The White Sox play in Bridgeport, which is a mostly middle-class Hispanic neighborhood; used to be more of a white working-class neighborhood before the manufacturing/slaughterhouse jobs disappeared from Chicago. I’ve been to dozens of games there – I lived there during the WS season, and they had 5$ Mondays. I often rode my bike there from my neighborhood on the near-northside. No worries, no fear, no crime. Some white people freak out when they have to go to a neighborhood full of non-white people but the neighborhood isn’t dangerous in the slightest.

Padres have just 14 winning records in 50 years, and two others at .500. The three years from 2005-07 mark the only time they’ve had back-to-back winning seasons. A shame. Lovely ballpark, nice city, total ineptitude in the front office. Is it really that hard to be competitive?

The Padres had terrible ownership for years; the Werners. Remember when they let that racist Roseanne Barr “sing” the national anthem? They set the franchise back decades because they kjust treated it like an ATM. Under the current ownership/management group the Padres are finally developing a farm system, drafting better, assembling a team that can win in a pitcher’s park….they have been screwed in the past by bad owners and a somewhat tough situation, in that two of the most well-run and storied franchises in baseball, the Giants and Dodgers, are in the vicinity. But the Padres are on the right track.

Easy there Starbucks. Personal appearance smack isn’t necessarily racist. If Roseanne said the exact same thing about a white person she’d still have a sitcom.

As for the Padres being on the right track I am going to presume you and every other Padres fan said the same thing 5-6 years ago. Questionable spending with Myers and Hosmer already which is a sign of things to come. Just brace for it.

The Padres tried to purposely put their park in the “ghetto”. The argument at the time is that was the thing to do…. Throw a bunch of money at the ballpark, locate it in the worst part of town and call it a face lift for the city

They ended up a few blocks west because the rich folks have too much say in politics… However this “ghetto” argument is really off. No ghetto in the world has a half billion dollar building in the middle of it

Yep, been there many times. Ran down old sports arena. Comparing a privately owned, $16m sports arena to a publicly funded MLB stadium is like comparing Apples to Truffles

Side note – Inglewood is about to have a mega plex and a new basketball stadium. Probably going to change the way that town looks over the next decade

Also, I was mearley pointing to one of the “pro-publicly funded stadium” arguments. They kept saying a new ballpark would magically clean up san diego’s skid row. The reality was they just relocated skid row. I don’t believe the public should pay for stadiums. The owners make plenty of money to build their own. It’s not like they offer a tax payer discount or anything of the sort

That part of Inglewood was not a good place to be, even when Magic was still playing. I agree with most of what you’re saying, but it’s just as much “apples to truffles” to compare what the Forum cost in terms of late 60’s dollars to anything in current dollars.

I hope this rebuild works. As a baseball fan, we get to have hope. They have a good farm and the best bullpen in the majors. They have hired smart people to work in the front office. They’ve had larger contract offers that just weren’t accepted. I don’t understand everyone citing this $68M number like it’s some threshold. At one point in time they also gave out the largest contract in MLB history.

$68M from 1996 equates to $110M now. And in baseball math, that’s probably closer to $150M as teams are making so much more nowadays. Situation and perspective from ownership are also different now (Cubs winning a WS has to be pushing Reinsdorf to win another one before he’s laid to rest).

I love how Yankee hater vacillate from saying we just straight up buy everyone to they cant sign anyone. Which is it?

I actually think the Dodgers are gonna pass on Harper, and go for Trout, who knows what playing in Dodger Stadium in front of 50,000 fans every night is like, not to mention playoffs 6 in a row and back-to-back WS. He probably loves playing in the weather of SoCal and the Dodgers have the money to sign anybody. In the meantime, Dodgers trade for Kluber, and if they do sign Harper, make it 2 years for 75 mm with an opt out after 1 for Harper, in case he doesn’t get what he wants this year and would like to re-establish value and try again next year for the record contract he wants

I don’t think that gets it done, giving those parameters. As a Phillies phan, Id be more worried if you pushed the AAV to 40mil. I think the Phillies can easily top 33mil AAV from what we’ve heard around here, from legit sources. Also, That contract doesn’t break any records either, which apparently is needed to play anywhere other than baseball’s oasis 🙂 – I kid, I like NY, but the hyperbole is getting out of hand.

Nope.. why would Machado agree to lose a 3rd of this contract. If it’s a 9 year deal they are guaranteed to lose the first 3 years. If its 6 year deal. It’s a losing contract for half the deal. Unless its 5 year deal with an opt out after 2 and an 3 year option if he doesnt opt out. The 3 year option is an automatic extension for another 150 mil 5/160 with an opt out after 2 years. With he gets the 3 year opt in that’s a potential deal of 310/8 for 38.75 AAV

That’s been my thinking for much of the off-season, though it sounds like WAS is back in it. Personally, I’d much rather have Machado because he has the higher floor. Bryce has had some great seasons and multiple mediocre seasons. I’d be worried that Harper is more Scottie Pippen than Michael Jordan. I don’t care about the lack of hustle stuff with Machado because almost every player takes plays off during the season. I think both guys can cover their contracts, but I’d be much more comfortable betting on Machado to produce at an elite level more consistently and longer than Harper.

is the “someone close to free agent infielder” in the article closer than “A former teammate/friend of Machado”.
It was less than a week ago that it was reported that Manny had decided on the Yankees, guaranteed by a close friend and he would announce it early Jan.
Same report also said that all 3 teams had submitted formal offers at that time.
      Which friend is right?

Blah Blah Blah, I said it 2 months ago, then a month ago and now today. Harper to the Dodgers, Manny to Philly. There’s a reason that the Sox have never signed a proven stud FA in their prime, no one wants to play for that organization and constantly be backpage to the Northsiders. Not to mention, this is the same clueless, inept front office that so poorly evaluated their own talent when claiming to be “All In” 4 years ago only to end up with a worse record than teams ACTIVELY tanking. If we all know that, these players and their reps certainly know that. They’re just trying to create buzz in the hopes that their dwindling fanbase will buy season tickets. Not happening.

The White Sox haven’t signed a proven stud FA in their prime? I think you are being a little harsh. It is a little thin, but the same is true with a lot of teams. Carlton Fisk signed his first 5 free agent contracts with the White Sox. Frank Thomas signed his first free agent contract with the White Sox. Albert Belle was pretty good when he signed with them, as was Jermaine Dye. And what about Jose Abreu? Plenty of others I have missed.

They drafted the Big Hurt, I know it’s hard to conceive the Sux drafting someone that didn’t turn into a bust. Abreu was not a “proven ML free agent”, he was an international signing in which the Sux outbid the Rockies for him. Albert… Joey Belle or whatever his name is was literally crazy, but technically he counts as a legit FA in his prime, when was that? 20+ years ago. Griffey, Thomas, Raines we’re desperate publicity stunts for players WAAAAAY past their primes.

Honestly, Machado strikes me as a very selfish player who once he gets paid, will slack off and just not care. If he will make comments about not hustling while he’s in the playoffs in a contract year nonetheless, imagine what he does when he’s got financial security in a long term commitment.

He’s going to be expected to be a leader on the young Sox team and I don’t know if he is going to be such a great role model for the guys coming up. Let alone the amount of money he will cost.

And not only that, but because the sport is so homogenized in so many ways, any time a Latino player actually plays with emotion (good god — not that) or with an individual identity, they get called all kinds of horrible things. It is the uniformity that is killing the popularity of baseball. More Manny Machados in the sport would boost its popularity.

The only difference between Machado and 95+% of non-rookies is that he was dumb enough to say that out loud. Show me someone that runs full speed on every ball they put in play, and I’ll show you someone that’s likely fighting for a roster spot. There are very, very few exceptions.

He is a generational player as a free agent at 26, that does not happen often. When it does, teams with no chance of signing them (and their fans) find holes in their game. Kinda like that hot chick that turned you down, now she is not hot anymore.

Reason 1: The NYY are the sole reason there’s no salary cap.

Reason 2: The Yankees routinely spend 3x more than small market teams on payroll, most of used to overspend on star players from other teams.

Reason 3: Revenue sharing is just hush money to keep the other owners quiet about a salary cap. Nobody even knows where this money goes, but my best guess is straight into owner’s pockets.

Who is taking less money to play for the Cubs?

Lester certainly didn’t. They gave him the third highest AAV at the time, and they had to outbid the Red Sox by $20M.

Heyward took less overall money than the Cards offered, but he did it because of the opt-outs.

Chapman bailed as soon as he could to go back to the Yankees.

Darvish? The only teams “contending” for him with the Cubs were the Brewers and Twins. Congrats.

And for some odd reason they decided to severely overpay Tyler Chatwood.

Also, didn’t Jesse Chavez say he’d retire if the Cubs didn’t resign him? Even he didn’t take a discount to stay with the Cubs.

So where are all these big free agent signings that flock to the north side because it’s such a great destination?

Cat, something tells me you’re not seeing the big picture here. Small market clubs are forever pushing the reset button due to lack of revenues. So it’s painfully obvious these teams aren’t investing these residuals back into roster salaries, and I doubt that was ever the intent. It’s hush money for the owners to accept the current economic system in the MLB (vastly favors big market clubs) and live with it.

Come on ChiSox, really? Just Lester? Hmmm, how about the 2016 WS MVP? Zobrist? Ring a Joey Belle? How about the FIVE consecutive 1st round picks that ALL contributed to the ring and are not “prospects” but part of their championship core STILL under team control for years to come? How about the trades for Arrieta, Hendricks, Strop, Edwards, etc… for NOTHING. There’s a reason why Theo&Co is regarded as one of the best front offices by many experts, those that actually get paid for their opinions. You know better, I know you do.

If you are a team that’s close to winning and you are a LF or 3B or DH away, you sign them. But, if it were me the offer would be 8-yrs, $250 with a $25-mil option that kicks in if….

      A) You win a WS the first 5 years, or
      B) You make the postseason 3 out of the the first 6 years.

The White Sox are the team that can sign both players, which I got crucified for saying a few months back. They have the cap room, they can build around Moncada, Anderson and Abreu. They can even spend on an arm (Kuechel) and potentially an OF (Pollock). It wouldn’t take much to win the AL Central. It’s the weakest division in baseball. Chisox would be contenders beginning in 2019 and continue to be for a few years.

Atlanta should be on Harper. They aren’t and I’m not surprised.

These boys town losers are just being trolls. I don’t blame them, their northsider lives are boring. When I read a headline and it starts with Cubs, I move on to the next headline because that’s not worth my time to read articles and post comments about a team I don’t like. Apparently cubs trolls don’t work the same way. And I like how he tries to back up from the racism remarks but he clearly knows deep down he meant it exactly that way. Quit giving this northside hitler any further satisfaction.

The most annoying thing about northside fans is their sense of entitlement. Same goes for the fans of several East Coast teams, et. al.

All fan bases have a few of these types, and it happens with all varieties and levels of sports fans. But when it becomes pervasive within a given fan base, it escalates from being mildly amusing to being downright irritating.

Machado hit into 26 double plays last year. That is a lot of rally killers. He also looked bad in the postseason. He potentially can be more like the 2017 version statistically than the 2018 version or worse for the rest of his career. He has an attitude problem. How much is this player worth to you? NO WAY should any team with 1/2 a brain offer more than 30 million per year. Absolute max deal should be 8 years, 240 million with player opt outs at years 3 and 6, club option at year 7.

Machado didn’t look bad in the post-season. He led the Dodgers in RBI. If you are basing your opinion on such a small sample size of at bats, it is a good thing you don’t make MLB personnel decisions. Attitude problem? Based on what? Because he is not one of those little white false hustle guys. I am a Dodger fan and will say this: No Machado in 2018, no post-season. The reason the Dodgers aren’t interested in bringing him back is Seager’s return and Turner already being at 3B. There is no need. But he will have a major impact wherever he signs, and will instantly become the team’s best player (Yankees included). And before you suggest Aaron Judge, I will remind you that Machado has never struck out more than 120 times. Judge fanned 208 times as rookie and 152 times in a second year in which he missed 50 games. Machado can also play THE premium infield position of SS or be a Gold Glover at 3B. He is also just three months older than Judge.

Easy assumption to make if you know next to nothing about the city or the team. They haven’t signed a major FA because Jerry Reinsdorf (owner of the Bulls and White Sox) is tight when it comes to player contracts. The guy is 80+, so I’m hoping the team is eventually sold to someone more competent (and not so risk averse).

I think you could be close, but I don’t think they’d give him an opt-out after year 2. I think they’d go year 3 at the earliest. The Sox won’t realistically have a chance at the playoffs until 2020, so I don’t see them letting him walk after 1 “useful” year. If it’s after year 3, they’ll have him for at least 2 potential playoff runs, and he’ll still be able to hit free agency at 29 if he wants. I also think the AAV might push up closer to $40M per if they’re going to convince him to take a shorter deal.

Here’s a rumor, Manny Machado is going to sign a huge contract with the New York Yankees! Really lets get real and be logical here for once. He’s not going to sign with a White Sox team that won’t be a contender for at least 2 to 3 years and He definitely hates Philadelphia and would probably say as much if he didn’t have to be PC. So it’s just another day of prolonging the inevitable! He’s going to sign with the Yankees. Like it hate it nobody cares but that should be the end of it.

I know for a fact, because I have a kid that plays professionally, that the Latins DO play a different brand of baseball. The nastiness that Machado displayed, according to my son, is what we “catch.” There’s a lot we don’t catch. He says it’s just their style of play. I do like when a player has “personality” in a game a/k/a fire. And there are plenty of guys that play with it. But you don’t have to be a d-bag to play with fire. Hustle should be the norm. But for a lot of guys, once they get that pay-day, lo and behold, the fire is out.
