Cubs Acquire Andrew Chafin

By Connor Byrne | August 31, 2020 at 2:27pm CDT

2:27pm: Arizona’s getting a player to be named later, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The D-backs could also include money in the swap, per Nightengale.

2:16pm: The Cubs have acquired Chafin, Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweets.

2:10pm: The Cubs are working to acquire Diamondbacks left-hander Andrew Chafin, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.

To this point in his career, the 30-year-old Chafin has only been a member of the Diamondbacks, who drafted him 43rd overall in 2011 and who has largely pitched well in their uniform since he made his debut in 2014. Chafin owns a 3.68 ERA/3.20 FIP with 9.54 K/9, 3.88 BB/9 and a 52.2 percent groundball rate in 271 2/3 innings, but keeping offenses at bay has been a problem this season. He has already given up six earned runs on nine hits and four walks (10 strikeouts) through 6 2/3 frames in 2020. Chafin has also been on the injured list for about two weeks because of a left finger sprain.

If he returns to health soon, Chafin’s history suggests he’ll give the NL Central-leading Cubs another credible reliever – which they certainly need. They’ll enter Monday’s action with a replacement-level bullpen that has recorded a 5.42 ERA/5.10 FIP over a month into the season. Chafin may not be long for the Cubs organization, though, as he’s due to reach free agency after the season. In the meantime, he’s earning a prorated $3.045MM.

Is he any good? They need more than one arm.

If you don’t mind a LH reliever who tends to walk the first batter he faces after entering the game, he’s not terrible.

High WHIP, good ERA+ over his career. Train wreck so far this season. I’m guessing that they won’t be giving up much for him unless he produces.

He’s the managing general partner, part of an ownership group. He’s also not a billionaire. Other than that, you’re doing great! LOL

Loving the cheap a$$ Ricketts snipes. Here’s the real issue with the Cubs—that cheap a$$ (and his family) put almost a BILLION dollars of their own money (no city, no taxpayer help) to refurbish and build around Wrigley. The problem is that that total was about $400-$500 OVER budget from the beginning of the project…and the proceeds from those ventures was to go back in to the ball club.

So, when Ricketts goes on record saying they are bleeding money or there are catastrophic losses during this he means HE is bleeding money. They did that all with their own money….and guess what, if all of that suffers during this—they money that was to go into player payroll isn’t going to be what it is.

I find it amazingly hard to believe that someone that spends a billion dollars of his/their own money is cheap. May have made some poorly timed decisions, but certainly not cheap.

Your right, the whole ownership group is cheap! Dbacks are the Orioles of the NL West.

Wrigley was falling apart. Remember the nets to protect the fans from falling concrete?? Did the Wrigley Family put any money into fixing the park? Did the Trib??? Did Sam Zell? Ahhhhh that would be a big fat NO!! So they went and renovated Wrigley on their dime- not the taxpayer like Reinsdork did when he threatened to go to Tampa. And the Cub have twice paid the luxury tax and occured the penalties of such. They are not being “Cheap”. The Cub just launched their own TV network which the money will be used to better the team- unlike when they were on WGN and didn’t get squat! The Cub were ripped off by the Trib for decades. Yeah the “Cheap” Ricketts who went out and got Theo Epstein and ended the championship drought. You do understand there are players like Baez who are gonna have to get paid right? So the team reset it’s spending to get under the luxury tax threshold cause the penalties get steeper…try like paying a league minimum contract 10 times more because you are over.

I would say the Wrigley family did a great job with the ballpark. It probably took precedent over the team. That’s why it became the tourist attraction that it is now. The Tribune Co. were able to swoop in and take advantage because P.K. didn’t have his estate in order when he died.

The Ricketts did try to get some taxpayer help. Rahm didn’t go for it and wasn’t going to help them out especially with the budget problems in both city and state. And I don’t blame them for trying. Just about every owner does it. I think they’ve been good owners overall. There’s certainly worse owners out there.

it doesn’t help that the ricketts won’t theo to spend big money. Because they could’ve probably at least had inquired about robbie ray or clevinger.

      Edit: any money at all.

No issue with this trade. Return will likely be minimal for the dbacks, and Chafin has a solid track record. A perfectly fine get, even if it’s not a huge boon to the bullpen.

Cy Chafin is no replacement for Kimbrel. It’s a move for the sake of a move. If Theo gave away more than a case of baseballs he was fleeced.

The cubs are in first place and in excellent position to make the postseason (97% chance per fan graphs). This is an addition that helps their weakest point, not sure how you can say it’s a fleecing. No one expects him to replace Kimbrel.
