Mariners Re-Sign Taylor Williams To Minor League Contract

The Mariners announced a number of non-roster Spring Training invitees this afternoon. Among those in camp are reliever Taylor Williams and catcher Brian O’Keefe, meaning both have signed minor league deals to return to the organization.

Williams has 97 MLB appearances to his name, splitting that over four clubs. The right-hander broke into the big leagues with Milwaukee and landed with Seattle for the 2020 campaign. He struck out 19 in 13 2/3 innings through the first month-plus of the shortened season. With Seattle out of playoff contention, they flipped him to the Padres in a deal that netted then-prospect Matt Brash. It proved a coup for Seattle, as Brash quickly blossomed into a highly-regarded talent and now looks a key piece of the Seattle relief corps moving forward.

San Diego got just five outings from Williams, as he lost most of the 2021 season battling a knee injury. The Friars waived him in September 2021, and he had brief stints in the Marlins’ and Giants’ organizations before returning to the Mariners via minor league deal last summer. The 31-year-old posted a 1.14 ERA over 23 2/3 innings for Triple-A Tacoma, racking up grounders at an incredible 60% clip. With the Mariners overloaded with bullpen depth, he never got an MLB look but impressed the front office enough to get another crack this spring.

Seattle still has an excellent relief corps. The offseason trade of Erik Swanson in the Teoscar Hernández deal subtracted one player from the mix, but Seattle added the out-of-options Trevor Gott on a free agent contract. He joins Paul Sewald, Andrés Muñoz, Diego Castillo, Penn Murfee and Brash as virtual locks for the season-opening group. Matt Festa is out of options himself and probably cracks the roster, while one of Marco Gonzales or Chris Flexen could take a long relief role if not traded before Opening Day given Seattle’s rotation depth. The M’s also have offseason trade acquisition Justin Topa and nabbed Tayler Saucedo off waivers from the Mets today.

That’s a deep collection of arms, meaning Williams and other non-roster invitees like Casey Sadler, Nick Margevicius, Ryder Ryan and Riley O’Brien could have an uphill battle to the roster. Most of that group is likely to start the season with the Rainiers. Williams is out of options himself, so if he cracks the MLB roster at any point, he’d have to stick in the majors or be made available to other clubs via trade or waivers.

O’Keefe is a 29-year-old backstop who played in two games for the M’s last year. He picked up a hit and a walk in his first four MLB plate appearances. The righty-swinging catcher had a decent .253/.330/.449 line with 13 homers over 352 trips to the dish with Tacoma last year. He joins Jacob Nottingham as non-roster catchers with previous big league experience. Seattle has Cal Raleigh and Tom Murphy as their catching duo but no additional depth on the 40-man at the moment.

The Tigers have signed right-hander Chi Chi Gonzalez and assigned him to Triple-A, per Emily Waldon of Baseball America (via Twitter). Gonzalez has twice opted out of minor league opportunities this season, first with the Twins, and more recently with the Brewers. He did appear in the Majors with both clubs, tossing 11 1/3 innings over four outings (two starts) with Milwaukee and making two starts spanning seven innings with Minnesota.   • Taylor Williams has signed with the Mariners and been assigned to Triple-A Tacoma, per Paul Braverman of the Tacoma Rainiers (via Twitter). The 31-year-old right-hander was a member of the Mariners in 2020, but he was dealt to the Padres in what turned out to be a beneficial deal for Seattle, who acquired Matt Brash, a breakout minor leaguer for Seattle in 2021.
  • There is always a fair amount of turnover at the edges of Major League rosters at this time of year, but teams looking for relief help should have plenty of options on the trade market should they be willing to engage that route. As of right now, the relief market appears more “robust” than over positional trade markets, so says Mets GM Billy Eppler, per Deesha Thosar of Fox Sports (via Twitter). Just about every contender could use another relief arm or two.

Giants Sign Taylor Williams To Minors Deal

The Giants have signed right-handed pitcher Taylor Williams to a minor league deal with an invite to big league camp, per Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com.

Williams was drafted by the Brewers and spent the first three years of his big league career there, before bouncing to the Mariners, Padres and Marlins over the past two years. Over his five seasons, he’s gotten into 97 games and thrown 98 2/3 innings. His career ERA is 5.29, along with a 23.3% strikeout rate and 10.9% walk rate.

Now 30 years old, Williams is out of options. If he’s able to crack the Giants’ roster, he’ll have to stay there, or else be designated for assignment. However, with just over three years of MLB service time, if he can earn and hang onto a roster spot, he can be retained by the club via arbitration.

Marlins Designate Taylor Williams For Assignment

The Marlins have designated right-hander Taylor Williams for assignment and selected the contract of fellow righty Luis Madero from Triple-A Jacksonville, tweets Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald.

Williams, 30, was a waiver claim out of the Padres organization earlier this month. He appeared in six games with the Fish, yielding a total of six runs (five earned) on nine hits and five walks with three strikeouts through 3 1/3 innings. That rough showing bumped his season ERA to 4.63, albeit in a tiny sample of 11 2/3 frames overall.

A fourth-round pick by the Brewers back in 2013, Williams has seen time in parts of five big league seasons. Through 98 2/3 frames, most of which have come with Milwaukee, he’s compiled a 5.29 ERA with a 23.3 percent strikeout rate and a 10.9 percent walk rate — both a bit worse than the current league averages. The Marlins will either place Williams on outright waivers or release waivers within the next few days. If he goes unclaimed, he can be outrighted to Jacksonville, although Williams has enough service time that he can reject the assignment or elect free agency at season’s end if he wishes.

Madero, 24, has had multiple stints with the Marlins this year, totaling six innings in the big leagues. He’s allowed seven runs over those six frames, but Madero has had a nice run down in Jacksonville. Through 57 Triple-A innings, he’s notched a 2.84 earned run average with a 24.2 percent strikeout rate and a 10 percent walk rate.

Marlins Claim Taylor Williams Off Waivers From Padres

The Marlins announced they’ve claimed reliever Taylor Williams off waivers from the Padres. In a corresponding move, Miami designated infielder Deven Marrero for assignment.

Williams has pitched in the majors in each of the past five seasons. The right-hander broke in with the Brewers in 2017 and landed with the Mariners last year after three seasons with Milwaukee. San Diego acquired Williams late last season but he made just one appearance down the stretch. The 30-year-old pitched in five games with the Padres this April, working 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts and three walks. He landed on the injured list with right knee inflammation midway through the season’s first month, though, and he remained on the IL until September 1.

The Friars designated Williams just a couple days after reinstating him from the IL. He’s out of minor league option years, meaning San Diego had to expose him to waivers in order to remove him from the active roster. The Marlins stepped in to add Williams for almost no cost, but they’ll too now have to keep him in the majors of risk losing him on waivers themselves.

Over the course of his career, Williams has a 5.17 ERA in 92 1/3 innings of relief. His strikeout and walk rates (24.3% and 10.5%) are right around league average for bullpen arms, and he’s induced whiffs on a solid 12.9% of his career offerings. Those peripherals suggest Williams could yet settle in as a decent middle relief option, at the very least. If the Fish keep him on the roster, he can be controlled through 2024 via arbitration.

Miami has now designated Marrero five times this year. The Marlins have selected him to the 40-man roster whenever the club finds itself in need of additional infield depth, but he hasn’t stuck on the big league roster for long. Marrero cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Jacksonville each of the previous four times, so it seems likely he’ll stick around in the high minors yet again.

Padres Designate Taylor Williams For Assignment

The Padres announced they’ve designated reliever Taylor Williams for assignment. The move opens a spot on the active roster for Jake Arrieta, who has been activated from the 10-day injured list to start tonight’s game against the Astros.

The Padres didn’t need to create a vacancy on the 40-man roster but Williams is out of minor league option years, meaning he had to either stick on the big league team or be exposed to waivers. San Diego’s 40-man total now sits at 39.

Williams himself just returned from the injured list Wednesday, when active rosters expanded from 26 to 28 players. Knee inflammation had kept the right-hander out since mid-April, and he didn’t get into a game upon being reinstated this month. Williams’ big league action this season consists of 5 1/3 innings of one-run ball over the first few weeks. That comes after he threw just one inning for the Friars in 2020 after being acquired from the Mariners last August for pitching prospect Matt Brash.

In addition to his time with Seattle and San Diego, Williams spent a few seasons with the Brewers. Over parts of five big league campaigns, the 30-year-old owns a 5.17 ERA with strikeout (24.3%) and walk (10.5%) rates not far off the league average for relievers. The Padres will now place Williams on waivers, where a bullpen-needy club could consider adding him for the final few weeks of the regular season.

Arrieta returns two weeks after suffering a left hamstring strain during his first start as a Padre. Between the Cubs and San Diego, the former Cy Young award winner has struggled to a 7.13 ERA across 89 2/3 innings.

The limit on active roster players expanded from 26 to 28 today, as the calendar flipped to September. Every team announced at least two additions to the big league club (some teams made three or more due to injured list placements). Here’s a recap of today’s spate of transactions:

Padres Claim Sam McWilliams Off Waivers From Mets

The Padres announced (via Twitter) that right-hander Sam McWilliams has been claimed off waivers from the Mets.  Right-hander Taylor Williams was moved to the 60-day injured list to create 40-man roster space for McWilliams.

New York designated McWilliams for assignment earlier this week, as the righty had gotten off to a very rough start in his first 8 1/3 innings for Triple-A Syracuse.  McWilliams issued eight walks and also allowed three home runs over those 8 1/3 frames, en route to a 10.80 ERA.

Over 52 1/3 career innings at the Triple-A level in both the Mets and Rays organizations, McWilliams now has an 8.60 ERA.  Though he has yet to reach the big leagues, the Mets inked McWilliams to a one-year MLB deal worth $750K last November, taking a flier on a promising young arm.

The Padres will now assume the remainder of that salary as per their waiver claim, and they’ll see if they can get McWilliams on track.  Given the number of trades between the Padres and Rays in recent years, it wouldn’t be surprising if San Diego had initially had interest in McWilliams back in his days in Tampa’s farm system.

Padres Activate Pierce Johnson, Dan Altavilla From Injured List

The Padres carousel of relievers continues to turn, this time via the activations of Pierce Johnson and Dan Altavilla from the injured list. Both right-handers came into the season as key, if underrated pieces of the Friars’ bullpen makeup. Both will make their season debuts when they next get in a game.

In terms of corresponding moves, Nabil Crismatt has been optioned for the second time this season. Taylor Williams has also been placed on the injured list with right knee inflammation, per Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune (via Twitter). Crismatt impressed this spring while on a minor league contract, earning himself a place in the organization. The Padres are likely to see Crismatt a number of times this season, though since his option has been used, he’ll also remain a candidate for demotion.

Conversely, Williams does not have any options remaining. The 29-year-old has been solid in five appearances so far this season, giving up just one run over 5 1/3 innings. Williams played for the Brewers and Mariners before coming to the Padres in an under-the-radar trade at last season’s August trade deadline.

Altavilla also came to San Diego from Seattle at the trade deadline last year, but as part of the higher-profile trade the sent Ty France, Andres Munoz, Luis Torrens, and Taylor Trammell to the Mariners for Altavilla, Austin Adams, and Austin Nola. All three pieces of that deal started the season on the injured list for the Pads, though Adams just recently made his return.

Johnson returned to the States from Japan last season, quickly becoming a vital piece of manager Jayce Tingler’s relief corps. The Colorado native appeared in 24 games, pitching to a 2.70 ERA/3.14 FIP over 20 innings. Johnson and Altavilla now join a deep group of veteran right-handers in the Padres’ bullpen. Beyond Johnson, Altavilla, and Adams, Tingler can also call on Craig Stammen, Keone Kela or Emilio Pagan ahead of nominal closer Mark Melancon.

 

Padres Notes: Lamet, Johnson, Roster Decisions

Padres righty Dinelson Lamet pitched multiple innings for the first time this spring Thursday, tweets A.J. Cassavell of MLB.com, albeit in a simulated-game setting. Lamet, whose 2020 season was truncated by a biceps injury that required a platelet-rich plasma injection in October, has yet to pitch in an actual Cactus League game since Spring Training began. Lamet tossed 17 innings in the first half of that simulated setup, and he returned from his downtime to toss another dozen pitches in the second “inning,” Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune tweets.

A concrete timeline for Lamet hasn’t been provided to this point, but he’s obviously a bit behind the rest of the Padres’ starters. Assuming he needs some additional time to ramp up early in the season, the Friars can still lean on Chris Paddack and Adrian Morejon to round out the rotation behind Yu Darvish, Blake Snell and Joe Musgrove. The 28-year-old Lamet broke out with a huge showing in a dozen starts last year, logging a 2.09 ERA/3.16 SIERA with an elite 34.8 percent strikeout rate and a very strong 7.5 percent walk rate.

  • Right-hander Pierce Johnson, who exited Tuesday’s Cactus League game early, has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 groin strain, tweets Acee. He’ll rest for a yet-to-be-determined period of time, though the club hopes that he can get in a couple more games by the end of camp, so it doesn’t sound like the current expectation is for him to miss any time during the regular season. Johnson, 29, returned to the Majors last season after a strong showing in Japan in 2019 and thrived in the San Diego bullpen. Through 20 innings of relief, the righty posted a 2.70 ERA with a gaudy 33.8 percent strikeout rate, though his 11.3 percent walk rate was also noticeably higher than the league average. He’s signed for $2MM in 2021, and at season’s end the Padres will decide on a $3MM club option or $1MM buyout.
  • Austin Nola’s fractured finger looks to have opened the door for Luis Campusano to make the Opening Day club, writes Dennis Lin of The Athletic in his latest roster projection for the Friars. San Diego is also “reluctant” to give up on Jorge Mateo’s defensive versatility and speed, Lin notes, and the fact that the out-of-options Mateo is also hitting well thus far (.355/.462/.516 in 39 PAs) likely tickets him for a bench spot as well. The bullpen could have some tougher decisions as well, given the lack of minor league options for Dan Altavilla and Taylor Williams — both of whom have struggled to this point.
