Yankees Trade Luke Voit To Padres

By Steve Adams | March 18, 2022 at 11:10am CDT

After months of speculation, Luke Voit’s time with the Yankees organization drew to a close Friday. The Yankees and Padres agreed to a trade sending the slugging first baseman to San Diego in exchange for minor league right-hander Justin Lange, according to announcements from both clubs. The Padres moved right-hander Michel Baez to the 60-day injured list in order to open a spot on the 40-man roster Voit.

Luke Voit | Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

The writing for Voit has been on the wall at least since New York re-signed Anthony Rizzo — and quite arguably longer than that. The Yanks acquired Rizzo last summer while Voit was on the injured list for the third time that year alone, and since the 2021 season ended they’ve been connected to Rizzo, Freddie Freeman and Matt Olson as they made no secret about pursuing alternative options to the incumbent Voit.

Voit’s trade marks the culmination of a swift shift in the organization’s stance on him. Just one year ago, Voit was heading into Spring Training as the clear everyday first baseman, having just led the Majors with 22 home runs during the truncated 2020 season. However, a knee injury in camp led to meniscus surgery that kept Voit out of action for the season’s first six weeks. Voit returned in early May, but just two weeks later he headed back to the 10-day IL due to an oblique strain. That issue kept Voit out another three-plus weeks, and he lasted only a month before going back on the IL in mid-July due to lingering inflammation in his surgically repaired left knee.

All told, Voit was limited to just 68 games and 211 plate appearances in 2021. When he was on the field, Voit remained somewhat productive, slashing .239/.328/.427 (111 wRC+), but his offensive output was nowhere near its peak levels. Looking beyond leading the Majors in long balls during the brief 2020 season, Voit had raked from the moment the Yankees acquired him from the Cardinals in exchange for relievers Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos.

Largely blocked from regular playing time in St. Louis, Voit immediately proved to be a hidden gem unearthed by the Yankees. He belted 14 home runs in less than two months down the stretch in 2018, and in 892 trips to the plate as a Yankee from ’18-’20, he batted .279/.372/.543 with 57 home runs, 31 doubles, a triple and an 11.5% walk rate against a 26.3% strikeout rate. Even adding in his “down” year this past season, Voit’s time with the Yankees will draw to a close with a stout .271/.363/.520 batting line in 1133 plate appearances.

That type of production would be a boost to any lineup, and the Padres in particular could use some thump of that nature at first base and/or designated hitter. San Diego first basemen, led by Eric Hosmer, hit a combined .275/.337/.412. That’s not terrible production by any means, but the resulting 106 wRC+ ranked 20th in the Majors. Of more concern was that the Padres, as a team, hit just .241/.324/.380 against left-handed pitching (94 wRC+, 24th in MLB). Voit, a career .264/.344/.516 hitter against left-handed pitching, ought to be particularly helpful with regard to that deficiency — though it’s important to note that he shouldn’t be regarded as a platoon player. To the contrary, Voit actually has slightly better career numbers against right-handed pitching.

Productive as he’s been at the plate throughout his Yankees tenure, Voit is a below-average defender at first base. The Yankees have made improving the defense a clear priority of late, evidenced not only by bringing Rizzo back but also moving Gleyber Torres to second base, acquiring Isiah Kiner-Falefa to take the reins at shortstop and moving Gary Sanchez to the Twins in favor of what currently projects to be a glove-first pairing of Kyle Higashioka and Ben Rortvedt (acquired in that deal with the Twins).

Voit now heads to the Padres not only for the 2022 season but perhaps all the way through 2024. He’s still arbitration eligible, projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn $5.4MM in 2022 before earning a pair of raises on top of that sum. It’s an eminently reasonable price to pay for a hitter of Voit’s caliber, particularly if he can boost his production away from his 2021 output and closer to its 2018-20 levels.

As for the Yankees’ return, they’ll acquire a 20-year-old righty who can reach triple digits with his fastball but has drawn questions from scouts about his command. The 6’4″, 220-pound Lange was the No. 34 overall pick in the 2020 draft and made his pro debut with the Padres’ Rookie-ball club in 2021. There, he pitched 22 innings with a 6.95 ERA, a 28.4% strikeout rate and a bloated 14.7% walk rate. When ranking Lange 13th among San Diego farmhands, The Athletic’s Keith Law wrote that the righty has “huge stuff and a workhorse build” but questionable command in addition to a recent knee issue.

Lange adds a power arm to the lower levels of the Yankees’ system, albeit a high-risk one who’ll be a bit of a project for their development staff. Trading Voit drops the Yankees’ projected 2022 payroll a bit south of $240MM, although in terms of luxury-tax obligations, they’re still a bit over $253MM, which places them squarely in the new new CBA’s second tier of penalization.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic first reported the Padres’ interest in Voit. MLB Network’s Jon Heyman first reported that Voit had been traded to the Padres (Twitter link). Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported the return (Twitter link).

Really? The Yanks need a starting pitcher, a catcher, and a 4th outfielder and a pitcher that might help them someday is a solid pickup?

Always a joy to “communicate” with someone who hates. It’s true as a fan, I generally think of my team first. It’s part of being a fan. Minnesota is a beautiful state and when the Twins aren’t playing the Yankees I wish them luck!

Screw this stuff, man. There are snow geese that need to be attended to a little over 100 miles from me. Waiting around for Cashman to do what I want has suddenly become decidedly unfun.

I saw this and thought I would share. This is the scouting report on Lange

          Scouting grades: Fastball: 65 | Slider: 55 | Changeup: 45 | Control: 45 | Overall: 50

Lange put his name on the map with a big-time fastball that erupted in the early spring preceding the 2020 Draft. He routinely hit the upper 90s and touched 100 mph, vaulting into the supplemental first round, where he signed with the Padres for $2 million as the 34th overall selection.

Lange’s fastball sits in the mid-90s and can feature both run and sink. He has the makings of a second power pitch in a slider that could become a plus mid-80s weapon with bite. The pitch is inconsistent, however, and should be a focal point of Lange’s as he begins to face pro hitters. He will also incorporate a changeup, which he rarely threw against high-school opposition.

A quick-twitch athlete, Lange added 25 pounds of muscle in the offseason prior to the Draft and had one of the best bodies in the 2020 high school pitching class. He has a huge ceiling but will need time to reach it, given his unrefined secondary pitches and shaky control and command. His slightly unorthodox low-arm-slot delivery also raises a few question marks.

I dont believe he struggled badly. The kid struck out 29 in 22 innings. Thats an elite k rate. His problem was like that of every other young pitcher. He walked 15. Yes im telling you with a straight face i believe lange has more value as a prospect than luke voit as a major leaguer. Luke voits career high in hrs is 22. Yes that was the shortened covid year but youre acting like he hits 40 bombs a year. Voit has 4.8 career baseball reference war. Hes almost replacement level. Even if lange never makes the show he has more value right now than voit. Teams never trade 1st rd pick pitchers for platoon dh’s.

Im not a big brian cashman guy but this is how you build a farm system. Trading useful major leaguers for possible stars who are far from the show. Teams imo are too desperate to be good today and dont think enough about the future. Good trade by the yankees. They have no need for voit

Wow, high velo, shaky command screams Yankees farm system… that’s their identity right now.

We still need three things: Catcher; at least 1 SP; & imho, a SS or CF. We must fill our weaknesses. If we are going to continue being cheap, at least go after that Naquin kid, who should be cheap and available in the Reds fire sale, and build on our offense with speed. Add that dynamic back into our offense with a top-of-the-order bat.

Ducky….Not sure about your comment about Voit “being a useful chip who could have made the 2022 squad better”?
Do you take at bats away from Rizzo?
Do you put up with his under average defense at 1st?
When you have to DH Stanton, he sits on the bench because Rizzo isn’t coming out in late innings.
Remember his swing….used to be opposite field until he fell in love with the HR in 2020 and became pull happy….
And what about his attitude which would have festered by him sitting on the bench….what does that do for team chemistry?
Agree, the return is less than spectacular but everyone knew that the Yankees were moving on from Voit, and he probably wanted out as well.
Thanks for the memories Voit, but the 2022 squad is better off without you….in my opinion!

@rocky7- I wasn’t in love with the trade at lst, until I read about Justin Lange and his upper 90’s fastball and wipeout slider. Lange isn’t going to help up this year, but with an arm like that he could definitely help us in the next couple of years. I really wanted the catcher Luis Campusano back. Surprised the Yankees didn’t throw Deivi in the trade with Voit for him.

Well, ~ 12 hours later & I am in a much better place spiritually, Rob. Hey. Different cathedrals for different communions for different fellas.

          & you are 100% correct.
Cash held an auction & did well. That’s a helluva return for a RH DH. No argument from me. I just thought Voit would make a decent secondary piece.

I am sure you are sick of me posting this. But: we really need another bat or two. Perhaps we have it on the roster. Maybe Higashioka takes another step as a powerhitter & rips 20+ jacks out of the 8th spot. Maybe Florial can make enough contact to fulfill his 20 HR/20 SB potential. Or (my favorite) maybe Andujar hits his way into a 26th man/offensive specialist role.

          Could happen, uh?

But as I look at the lineups in the AL East, ours just doesn’t stack up, man. Not right now. Not without addition(s) or some hopeful breakthroughs. Which bugs me. Twins fans – for example – pin their yearly hopes on “breakthroughs.” Yankee fans? Not so much.

Yeah, Ducky, either a secondary piece in a bigger trade to help the Yankees, or maybe just keep him to wait for the inevitable Stanton injury, opening up DH, or a Judge injury, pushing Stanton to the OF. There is going to be some point this season when we think: really wish we still had Voit!

But, in a future time, we may also think: Wow, I’m really glad we have Lange!

I expected a minor league arm with upside all along, but I didn’t think they’d land a recent first-round pick. It’s a good return for Voit, IMO.

Not really. Voit can’t stay healthy and when he was on the field last year he was basically Hosmer. At 31 years old his injury issues will not get better and his performance will decline.

This is a typical Preller move.

Called this one before the lockout.. He is a perfect fit for the Padres and no way Cashman would keep him after replacing him last year.. Trading Sanchez is going to bite him in the butt though. Sanchez has always been a paycheck first player and he will have an MVP caliber season in his walk year. He has said several times that he doesn’t enjoy the game. You can tell by his first call up that he enjoys the money though. Cashman should finally have made enough mistakes to get fired after this offseason. Only mistake I made was in their pickup for SS. I thought it would be a bat first option like Brad Miller or Freddy Galvis.

@Rsox: they play the game outside, yes.

The clubhouse is inside, the trainers rooms are inside, the workout areas are inside, the weight rooms are inside, the lounge, the batting cages, the team meeting rooms, the offices, all inside. Then during the game they all sit shoulder-to-shoulder in the dugout.

I have no sympathy for these guys who will experiment with whatever they can (legally and sometimes illegally) to enhance their performance, with or without any real data and often absent any real science. Yet they won’t contribute to society by getting a free shot that will make them less likely to transmit a disease should they be asymptomatic.

What makes you think this is a “selloff?” He’s getting rid of pieces the team no longer needs. I’m not sure you are aware but Sanchez hasn’t done much of anything in three years while Urshela and Voit have been hurt a bit of late.

Rather than a selloff, I get the impression Cashman is coming to realize marginal players who were undervalued by other teams (Voit, Urshela, etc.) are undervalued for a reason. The team extracted about as much as you can get for them.

@Clipper, Cashman has certain tendencies. He’ll go for the upside of an arm who might help a couple years down the line. Lang is 20 and was a former first-round pick. They have a good track record on these. Luis Gil was acquired for Jake Cave, for example.

Rizzos offensive numbers are worse than Voits. Particularly against RHP. Adding a lefty hitter is useless if the lefty hitter is, well, useless. Which Rizzo is at this stage of his career.

He’s basically gutted a top 5 farm system via trade on two different occasions now. Had the second highest payroll in all of MLB last year, yet people still believe the hype.

The Chicago White Sox traded him Tatis in 2016 and yet still 5 years later they made the playoffs and the Padres didn’t. That’s how broken the Padres are.

He GMs like it’s fantasy baseball and keeps making illogical trades that dig the Padres into deeper holes. Let’s resign Profar. Now let’s sign the KBO star despite not having a position for him. Now let’s trade for a 2B and put him in the outfield. Now let’s trade that 2B for a lesser return.

He seems to get it so close, then gets an itchy trigger finger, and instead of just making small tweaks, maybe signing a middling free agent to bolster the core or a quality bullpen arm, he decides he has to do some mega blockbuster deal for his ego, which usually ends up blowing up in his face. If the Padres had Preller in their accounting department with a different GM I think they’d have gone to a WS already, or at least deep into the playoffs.

Renfroe got us Cronenworth, Urias got us Grisham, so I’d probably do those again. But I was then and am still mad about losing the Franimal. A better overall hitter than the absolute mashing and strikeouts would suggest, plus he’s still only 26 and the NL DH was always coming…

Urias and Grisham are basically interchangeable at this point. Are we going to pretend that Eric Lauer didn’t start 20 games for a playoff team last year with a 3.19 ERA and a 134 ERA+

Didn’t he trade Franmil for Taylor Trammell? How did that workout?

Then for good measure he went back to Cleveland the next year and gave them Cal Quantrill. All he did was start 22 games with a 2.89 ERA and a 154 ERA+ last year.

Seriously, Preller is the biggest fraud in MLB. The guy has zero results.

Taylor Trammel is a 4th OFer. His star has dimmed considerably. Lauer had a fantastic year but outperformed his perirpherals by quite a bit (3.90 xERA, 4.04 FIP, 4.26 xFIP) and Ashby is being stretched out now to take that role from him this year. Still a useful backend starter, no doubt. Grisham is SOOOO much better than Urias it’s laughable. Urias is among the worst defenders in the sport – he simply has no place to play. He’ll be a below average DH. Grisham has better projections than Urias across the board, and if you ask 30 GM’s who they’d prefer today, 30 GM’s will say Grisham.

If the Padres make the playoffs by a game or two it will likely be because of Voit this year. If they make the playoffs by 5 games, this was unnecessary. But they missed last year, the Dodgers just signed Freeman and the Giants have been making savvy under the radar Giant’s moves. Nothing worse than going all in and missing the playoffs by a game or two. A good GM makes this swap for Voit 10 out of 10 times. I don’t see the issue, and Preller’s history isn’t nearly as bad as you’re suggesting.

In the Grisham trade they also acquired Zack Davies who helped the Pads into playoffs in 2020. They flipped Davies for Yu Darvish. LMAO at any fools that diss on Preller for these deals.

4.04 FIP and 1.1 WAR means Lauer was the #4 starter the Padres needed all season.

Urias 111 OPS+ in 150 games played. 3.1 WAR. He had a 6 DRS at 3B, his main position this coming season. That is substantially above league average.

Grisham 106 OPS+ in 132 games played. 3.3 WAR. Not better than Urias.

Taylor Trammel is a 4th OF … in Seattle.

Voit had a 106 OPS+ last season, he is 31, injury prone, and in decline. As a DH that will not add enough value to add even one win.

Preller’s history is worse than he is suggesting. He has traded away 27 more WAR than he has received in return

I always thought they gave up too quickly on Urias. Renfroe reminds me of Jeff Gyorko – looked flashy at times but never really was consistent enough to be a solid contributor and too many strikeouts.

Wow, as a Padre fan I had high hopes for Lange down the road. The knock on him was his pitchability and that he was “going to have to figure some things out” if he was going to reach his potential. They are in “win now” mode and keep seeing teams around them get better, so Preller & Co. had to d something and with them being so tight to the CBT limit, Voit was a cheapish pickup with upside.

Yankees fans were posting some ridiculous trade ideas yesterday: Voit for Lamet, Voit for Paddock, etc. The Yankees wisely traded Voit for a lottery ticket; that’s all he is worth. Hopefully, Voit can stay healthy and return to mashing but he won’t be winning any gold gloves out in SD. I’m happy for him that he will have a chance to start again out on the west coast.

Good for Luke. As I commented in the other Voit thread two hours ago, this is perfect for him: a shot at a full-time DH gig where his defensive limitations and injury proneness won’t be such concerns.

Don’t focus on the return. That 20-year-old pitcher is a lottery ticket who could be flipped in another trade. This frees up salary for other moves.

I think they’re going to either sign Soler or trade for Meadows. They almost have to get another OF before the season starts just to field a proper team.

All those with the exception of Cole are question marks with d.l. always. Metrics is just what it is a numerical prediction a guess still doesnt take into account the history of the player and year in and year out players do underperform or some stay steady.

The way this team is currently constructed yes it has a lot of holes they are currently either tied for 3rd or 4th behind Rays & Toronto . Yankees have a position of Catcher that needs to be resolved, 1st baseman that is not vaccinated and Eric Adams is hellbent on not bending over just because its the Yankees or the Mets, you have judge not vaccinated and possibly Stanton so if they keep everything in place that is 90 games to be missed between NY & Toronto.

          They have a third baseman that has a history of leg issues, a CF that if he sneezes goes on the d.l. a LF that supplies so much wind energy im not sure why Joe Biden and the Squad not contract him, a RF in Judge that was healthy last year pretty much but is always a questioned mark, a DH in Stanton that the Yankees don’t want him to smell the grass yet if he DH he gets hurt, the starting rotation full of #4 as Sevy gets hurt every year and a thin bench so yes the Yankees have a bunch of holes and they will be Top 3 in Payroll and still not athletic and wait until they sign Bret Gardner they now will be close to being the oldest team or top 3 ;

Voit was underrated in pinstripes. That said, no way he’d fit on the roster with Rizzo unless Stanton played more OF which wasn’t going to happen. Should get more playing time in SD with the universal DH.

I don’t think he was underrated. He was a poor defender and injured repeatedly. When he was healthy enough to bat, even while hobbled by a sore foot, he got enough reps to lead the league in home runs in the shortened 2020 season. By talent and health, DH is the only realistic position for him. Good luck to him in SD.

RE angt222 – 100% concur with this assessment-
This could be a very underrated acquisition.- Voit brings great offensive, commitment & informal leadership / professional attitude to a very competitive Padre roster..
Provided he can stay healthy & in the lineup, Voit could easily achieve league leaders in HR’;s & ribbies..

Luke is only suited to DH. He gets credit in my book for working hard to overcome his defensive shortcomings, but maybe he knows he’s better off not having to struggle with them:

“It helped my career out a lot,” Voit said of the universal DH. “That was big.”

I’m not singing Cashman’s praises, believe me. I think he’s an overrated GM who’s had a huge budgetary advantage over his peers and still put together flawed rosters. But that’s one reason why Luke had to go: Cashman took on Stanton’s huge contract, and other players, like Judge, need DH reps to get off their feet. There weren’t enough reps for Luke at DH on the Yankees.

Somebody scouted this Lange kid enough that the Padres chose him as their second pick in the 2020 draft. That’s not a bad addition in exchange for a one-dimensional slugger with no position on the club.

I wish Luke all the success in the world. He was a good Yankee.

This was a contract dump which isn’t too bad. Why keep a guy that’s pretty much a DH when you have no need for another DH type? At this point Andujar can go also. He’s organizational depth and that’s it. Eventually the Yanks need to reset the books completely. Taking on crap veteran contracts is only putting a bandaid on the issue. Judge isn’t worth breaking the bank for either. I love him, but DH is going to be his permanent home in 2 years. The Yanks are one of the few teams that can build a young team and then afford to extend them.

They traded for Voit as a DH so the question isn’t is about him being a better hitter than Hosmer (which he is) it’s whether he’s a better hitter than their bench options who we’re going to have to cover DH, which would have been backup catchers like Caratini or Alfaro.

The Padres need more power in their lineup, this is a low cost acquisition that fills their DH hole.

109 OPS+ vs 107 OPS+.. Not much difference. The biggest difference is one guy stays healthy and the other is on the IL more than half of every season.

Is Voit better than the Padres current DH options Alfaro and Profar? If he is healthy, that is a definite yes. If not, no. A player is worth exactly zero when they are on the IL.

You can’t speak reason to these posters, they’re probably the same ones on here talking about how the Yankees would have to give up Volpe and Dominguez for Sean Murphy. They don’t get that the only way Voit was going to Oakland is if the Yankees sent the cash along to pay for him as well. The Yankees did just fine with this move acquiring a solid prospect for Voit which was more than I thought they would get.

Lange is not injured. He was already in minor league camp throwing bullets.

The Padres got fleeced as usual as Voit will be on the IL by the beginning of June after putting up Hosmer-like offensive numbers.

Anthony Volpe was the 30th pick in 2019, when there were 32 picks in the first round and two picks in the Compensatory Round.

You really think it’s worth worrying about the difference of four spots between the spot where the Yankees’ current top prospect was picked and the spot where Lange was picked?

Voit was a 0.3 WAR player. Replacement level. He is 31 so he is in decline. His injury issues will get worse, not better from this point forward. When he was on the field last season he was not as good as Hosmer and Hosmer was awful.

Voit is 31. He played 68 games last season because of injuries. He had a 109 OPS+.

At 31 he is in the declining years of his career and his injuries will increase and his hitting will not improve. That is the sad fact of baseball. Even the best players start to decline once they hit their 30s. Its all downhill for Voit from here.

That’s pessimistic. A lot of players get better in their early 30s, I can think of hundreds. But one could more easily argue that he’s getting better with age. In 2020 his OPS+ was 157 (well above his career ave) and he received MVP votes. It was a short season but he had the same # of ABs in 20 as he did in 21. Maybe the real Voit is somthing in between those best and worst years, which gives credence to his career numbers being a better representation, rather than his worst career year (last year).

I know we would all like the Yankees to acquire better players for the major league roster, the deficiencies that we all see have been duly noted above. However I fear that this may be it ,other than a minor pitching addition a la Heaney( hopefully not him again) now or at the trade deadline.

Imo One of the reasons Cashman made that deal with Minnesota, was he felt that it addressed all of his perceived needs on the team in one fell swoop at this time, to unload Sanchez finally and get new catching with better defensive abilities, a cheap stopgap shortstop, and A better offensive third baseman, if only a marginal upgrade.

I think he is quite comfortable with waiting till the trade deadline and then stepping in and seeing what he needs at that time, and besides he loves doing that because he can get players at $.50 or less on the dollar because it’s less than half a season. Of course in my opinion it’s a crapshoot because who knows who’s available at that time, if it fills any needs, and if you can move fast enough in the limited time available to get what you need. And let us not forget they feel with the expanded playoffs, They feel they can sneak into the playoffs, they’re not interested in a championship team, that’s quite obvious by their actions.

As a neutral observer, I believe the Yankees offseason was pretty good. The trade with Minn took care of a few areas and prevented them from dishing out a large contract to Story or Correa, thus saving the money for Judge and the signing of Rizzo sets them up nicely in the infield. So I don’t see where the Yankees did not improve their roster this offseason.

A lot of Yankee fans feel these moves are only marginal upgrades along with the risk of JD’s health, myself included. Why be so prudent when they tried so hard to dip below the CBT last year? Money shouldn’t be an issue. They’ve yet to address their catcher position so the jury is still out.

They gave up a lottery ticket prospect who played in rookie ball last year for an above average MLB hitter that fills a need on their team. Objectively the team is better today than it was yesterday with Voit now at DH.

Ok, so what does this mean for Hosmer? To me it seems as if they are contemplating trading Hosmer this year or during the off season to rid themselves of his contract. However, as long as Hosmer is present he will be the first baseman and Voit the DH.

I was hoping Cashman was able to unload Stanton and keep Voit as DH. Cashman needs to get rid of that contract no matter how money the Yankees have to swallow. Cashman when it coming to making trades he never thinks outside the box.

Well if they eat a ton of money on unloading Stanton they wouldn’t really be getting rid of the contract.

Even if Hosmer is traded, Voit will be the DH for the few games he is healthy enough to play.

That’s a relief. While Voit is probably an improvement over Tellez/Hiura, he’s a typical Stearns/Counsell trade target and I’m glad Voit isn’t headed to Milwaukee.

This tells me they shopped Voit in every trade banter but nobody they weren’t packaging Voit with any good prospects. The resigned Rizzo and dumped Voit and his $7 million in salary. Basically the Yankees rather have Rizzo for $16 million than Voit at $7 million.

Voit’s estimated to receive $5.25M this year, not $7M. As for Lange:

“Lange, the No. 34 overall pick in the 2020 Draft, is a high-ceiling pitching prospect, though he’s dealt with command issues at the lower levels of the Minor Leagues. He checked in as the team’s No. 8 prospect before the deal.”

      mlb.com/news/luke-voit-traded-to-padres

This description seems kind of ignorant. To speak of “the lower levels of the Minor Leagues” when he’s played on only one level, the Arizona Complex League, the lowest rung on the minor league ladder, tells me this writer didn’t do his homework.

Lange only pitched 22 innings in nine games. He had command issues — not terribly unexpected in a 19-year-old — but he also struck out 29 in those 22 innings. To get a team’s No. 8 prospect isn’t such a bad return. The Yankees’ No. 8 prospect is Luis Medina, who slots between Trey Sweeney and Ken Waldichuck.

The Pads get a solid bat; the Yankees get an arm for the future. Works for both teams.

Voit is injury-plagued. A typical AJ Preller move.
