Michael Conforto Exercises Player Option With Giants

By Darragh McDonald | November 6, 2023 at 11:50am CDT

Outfielder Michael Conforto has exercised his player option and will stay with the Giants for 2024, per Jon Heyman of The New York Post. Conforto could have opted out and become a free agent but will instead stay in San Francisco and make a salary of $18MM next year.

Conforto, 31 in June, signed a two-year, $36MM deal with the Giants coming into the 2023 season. He was allowed to opt out of the deal after the first season, so long as he took at least 350 trips to the plate in that initial campaign. He easily eclipsed that figure, getting to 470 PAs, but the quality of his work was only so-so. He hit 15 home runs on the year, well below his 30-per-year run from a few years ago. His .239/.334/.384 line amounted to a wRC+ of 100, indicating he was exactly league average.

The decision on whether or not to opt out was arguably borderline, despite the tepid season. This winter’s free agent market is considered to be light in terms of impact bats, which could have perhaps given Conforto a boost. He also demonstrated his health after missing the entire 2022 season, which was somewhat encouraging on its own. But on the other hand, there likely would not have been tons of momentum behind him if he decided to return to free agency.

Conforto had an incredibly strong run from 2017 to 2020, hitting 97 home runs in that time and slashing .265/.369/.495 for a wRC+ of 133. But his batting line dipped to .232/.344/.384 in 2021, with just 14 homers. That was an ill-timed down year, as it preceded Conforto’s free agency. He turned down a qualifying offer from the Mets in search of a more significant deal but ended up injuring his shoulder during that winter’s lockout. He eventually required surgery and missed the entire 2022 campaign.

The Giants took a shot on a post-surgery bounceback, though it didn’t quite work out. If he had returned to free agency, he would have had a hard time marketing himself. On the one hand, he has some very strong past results and is coming off a healthy campaign. But two of the past three years have featured fairly tepid offense, with a totally lost year in between. The shortened 2020 season obviously wasn’t his fault, but the fact remains that Conforto hasn’t been both healthy and clearly above average at the plate for a full season since 2019. Since he’s not considered an especially strong defender, that declining offense obviously hurts his earning power.

Conforto now slots into the outfield depth chart for the 2024 Giants, alongside Luis Matos, Mike Yastrzemski, Mitch Haniger and Austin Slater, with LaMonte Wade Jr., Heliot Ramos and Blake Sabol perhaps in the mix as well. The Giants are expected to be aggressive this winter, likely pursuing marquee free agents after missing out on players like Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa last winter. They have been speculatively tied to outfielders like Cody Bellinger and successfully pursuing such a player would further crowd this picture.

That could perhaps lead to Conforto or someone else being shopped around in trades. Conforto, Yastrzemski, Wade and Sabol all hit from the left side, as does Bellinger. For a platoon-loving club like the Giants, perhaps that’s too many lefties for one outfield, but it also depends on how the dominos fall this winter. Clubs would likely have some level of interest in taking a flier on Conforto given the market conditions, but the valuations from them might fluctuate based on whether they believe he’s capable of returning to his pre-2021 form.

For the Giants, keeping Conforto’s salary on the books means they are projected to have a payroll of $147MM, per Roster Resource. They have had payrolls around $200MM many times in the past and their competitive balance tax number is currently pegged at $170MM. The base threshold is going to be $237MM in 2024, giving them plenty of room before the luxury tax would become a concern.

18 mill for a guy that posted 99 OPS+ is definitely a bargain for Conforto as he wouldnt get that much in free agency.

By this logic the Tatis, Machado and Bogaerts deals are 3 of the worst in history

The Bogaerts deal, unquestionably, will go down as one of the worst in history. The Machado deal is now and will become increasingly toxic. Not sure about Tatis. They are not all the same though on the disaster scale

Not sure I’d proclaim the Bogaerts deal as one of the worst in history after one season. Might end up that way, but I think we need a couple more years of non-performance to nail down if the deal was a bust.

If your best OF prospect isn’t potentially better than Michael Conforto, than your team needs to draft better. Conforto is more of a 5-7 million a year bench bat, role player and potential 4th OF.

If $18 million is such a bargain for Conforto then .232 BA must be the new MLB standard.

Since Conforto opted in to remain with the Giants fans expectations will be high. If Conforto wants a big payday iafter next season’s free agency then he must live up to expectations & have a monster season – .300+ BA & 30+ HR.

Should Conforto get off to a mediocre start in 2024 Zaidi needs to immediately cut his losses & trade or release Conforto.

Agent must have twisted Farhan into agreeing for 2 years? Knowing shoulder sugery typically takes 1 to fully recover from? If he doesn’t come back next year, he might be toast? Reference Marcel Ozunas two subpar years in STL had surgery in the 2018-2019 offseason and was a beast after he healed and got MVP votes?

Pete’sView, This doesn’t hurt the Giants one bit. Conforto and his salary will not prevent the Giants from doing anything they want to do. Best case scenario is he bounces back in a big way, middle scenario he’s an overpaid OFer, and worst case is he’s just awful, and the Giants release him and eat his salary. The Cubs ate more than that to dump Heyward.

Him opting in is no big deal just as him opting out would have also been no big deal. One guy getting paid $18M, even if he’s not worth it is not a needle mover, one way or the other, for a club with the financial resources like that of the Giants. We’re not talking about a team with a severely limited budget like the A’s here.

Well, the $18M could be spent in a much more efficient way, and the Giants outfield needs a do over, so Conforto—no matter how you count value—is in the way . . . unless he has a major bounce back. And I’d be happy for that.

Conforto and his $18M does not, and will not, prevent Zaidi from pursuing any FAs that he wants to. And if Conforto stinks, he’ll spend time on the bench. And if he’s totally horrendous, they’ll just release him, and eat the money. They can afford that, and they wouldn’t be the first team to do that.

It’s pretty obvious that Farhan prefers short-term, high AAV deals to the inverse, as he should. Most FA deals are poor investments anyway, and the burden is far lighter for 1-3 years. Payroll flexibility is a massively underlooked element of quality decision-making

        Not really.

        Reasons guys wait last minute

        1. Gauge market value (im sure boras told him to wait and explored what’s out there)

        2. Gauge extension talks. Dont need to opt in if you sign a new extension. Again. Extension talks take time which prolongs a decision.

Doesn’t have much to do with “easy decision or hard decision”. Has to do with player, well reps mainly, exploring other options than opt in. There’s really no reason to opt in immediately when that fall back option is always there regardless how your other avenues turn out.

“Doesn’t have much to do with “easy decision or hard decision”. Has to do with player, well reps mainly, exploring other options than opt in.”

Ross Stripling doesnt disprove anything I said. Decision is made based on what other opportunities players have. If there are no other opportunities happening (free agent market, trade, extension) guys will exercise the player option. Its not “easy or hard”. Stripling exercising the option 1st day of the off season or 1 hour before the deadline doesnt change that outcome. It also doesn’t pay him more or less.

          Your contradictory post is nonsensical.

First off, gauging extension talks is irrelevant. Why would a guy that was interested in an extension not opt-out? Plus, there’s a deadline to decide whether to opt out. Extension talks can take longer than that allows, But whether a guy opts out or not has no impact on negotiations for an extension.

An easy decision is a no-brainer, Ross Stripling.

A difficult decision involves weighing multiple factors, such as market value, and market interest, against the current deal The differences can be marginal making it a difficult decision.

Again , disproved nothing I said. Ross Stripling exercising his player option 1 minute into an off season or 1 minute before a deadline is the same outcome. Has nothing to do with “easy or hard”..

Why would a guy be interested in an extension not opt out? Cause extension talks can adjust a current contract agreement. i.e. add on additional money while lowering the current contract aav for instance. Opting out nullifies the agreement in place and youre unable to adjust a non existing contract. You sure you know how these things work? cause you’re really not demonstrating such. maybe come back when you’re a bit more seasoned in this topic.

Okay, it wasn’t an easy decision for a guy that announced before the end of the season that he’s not opting out And it’s not a difficult decision for a guy weighing multiple factors, for a life decision of where he’s going to work/live, and how much money he’s going to make next year. Got it. And black is white, and night is day.

Also, you’re confusing extension talks that happen with plenty of time to negotiate, like Machado’s extension last season, with guys deciding whether to opt out of a final year. There’s no reason in the world to hold on to an existing contract at opt out time. believing anything about it needs to be preserved. A new contract can be written to accomplish your stated reason; additional money while lowering the current contract AAV. Again it makes zero sense.

that’s a bummer – this is going to hurt the entire outfield since the plan is to go hard on lee – rather than having lee +youth and yaz/haniger in the OF you are looking at conforto, Haniger which slows the whole position down defensively. Maybe they can make him a DH with the departure of pederson and still rearrange the OF to increase the speed and defense there but I think that they were expecting him to opt out with the horrible offensive market

Shouldn’t be a major issue. Lee, if they land him, would be the CFer. Haniger, Conforto and Yaz can form a solid rotation between OF and DH, unless of course the Giants land Ohtani. I can also see Yaz being traded, especially if they land Ohtani.

Seemed likely to me. Could he have landed a two- or three-year deal worth more than $18MM in total value? Yes, but he wouldn’t have approached that AAV. Better to get the full dollar value of the contract and hope that a second year back and further from surgery will produce better than league-average results. I think he will.

To use your words, this is a black eye for Zaidi and the Giants. $18 million for Mr. Mediocrity.

        2 years at 18m. A black eye ?
How about a slight reddening that might turn into a small bruise.

I know. Payroll flexibility is not an issue. In any way. It’s just a number at the Giants.

You know you have hit home when people try to bring up players that have nothing to do with the conversation at hand.

The point is that signing a guy to a 3/.36 deal when he had 2 platform years that were terrible and injured and then just injured all season is not smart. No intelligent person expected him to perform in 2023 or going forward.

Other than, you know, every projection system. But maybe if you just keep repeating the word “intelligent” you might be convince a pleb or 2

    Don’t mind it.

He’s basically replacing Joc Pederson with some upside to be better, especially defensively, at $2 million cheaper.

On the open market he probably could have got 2 or 3 years, maybe $12 mil/yr. That could be high, heck it could be low. If he’s an overpay it’s probably not a big one. So not a big deal IMO. Sure I wanted an extra 18mil to spend, oh well. One way to look at it is if he had a better year, Giants would have benefitted BUT he would have opted out so maybe his big year is this year. Probably due for one?

18M is too much for this tepid production.

And Conforto knew it too which is why he exercised the option. After his 2023 that $18 million is a gift. Smart move on his part.

18M for conforto, easy peasy for him not to opt out. The problem for him is that he is a year older and plays in a hard to hit HR stadium. He will really have to give it the ‘ol contract year A game otherwise he is a bench/role player going forward and won’t command anywhere near 18m again per season

If you add up the last 3 seasons, Conforto hasn’t put up league average season in them combined. Had to know this deal was not going to end well for the Giants.

Giants’ bad deals last 1-3 years. Padres’ ones last 6 or 8 or 11 or *grimaces* 14

The Padres have nothing to do with the Giants. What your comment means is you felt threatened by the truth about Conforto instead if just looking at the facts about Conforto.

Pads Fans, It’s true the last 3 seasons have been subpar, but the Giants only had 2 of those to judge from. and one of those was the stat skewing 2020 season. If I was choosing between him and Matt Carpenter last year, I’d have gone with Conforto, and his track record, over the 47 game wonder that was clearly an outlier in 3 out of 4 of Carpenter’s seasons.

Matt Carpenter has nothing to do with Conforto. Trying to bring Carpenter or any other Padre into a conversation about Conforto is missing the point.

The Giants had 2 seasons to look at before signing him. 1 he was terrible and injured for 2 months, one he missed the entirety of with injuries. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that he wasn’t going to be good coming back from that. In fact, I said so when they signed the deal on this website. Now they are stuck paying him another $18 million.

I think it’s you missing the point. Your criticism of Zaidi was for signing Conforto, despite his two previous seasons not being good. And yet you defended Preller signing Carpenter despite 3 of his previous 4 seasons not being good.

The two are comparable. The only variation is that Carpenter hit well over a small sample, the previous season. But both had questionable track records when signed.

I questioned the Carpenter signing at the time. And as it turns out, the Carpenter signing was worse than the Conforto signing. Last season Conforto was league average with a 100 wRC+, while Carpenter was 14% below league average.

Happy to see him stick around. The position player market is weak. The man could not find any consistency and it was a frustrating watch. Can only hope he gets himself back to some level of above average.

On a side note. The shoulder held up well. The MLBTR medical fraternity definitely got that part wrong.

You suck Conforto. You should have opted out. To think you are worth 18mil when you are injury prone and inconsistent is a disgrace to baseball.
