Latest On Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s Market

By Steve Adams | December 19, 2023 at 9:53am CDT

There’s been ample speculation about the eventual price tag of a Yoshinobu Yamamoto contract, but until early this week, the right-hander hadn’t discussed specific years and dollars with clubs, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports.

Teams eyeing the NPB ace’s services were asked to submit a “preliminary” bid early in the process to gauge the seriousness of their interest, per Passan, but a follow-up round of more concrete bidding hadn’t taken place prior to this week. Yamamoto has met with several teams recently, presumably to familiarize himself with each organization and the systems and personnel in place at each potential landing spot. Entering the week, no teams had made a formal offer of $300MM or more, despite speculation to the contrary; none, in fact, had submitted a formal offer even beyond that preliminary bid. Passan wrote that some clubs have tried to broach the subject of years and dollars, but Yamamoto’s camp preferred to hold off until this week.

The Yankees, Mets, Dodgers, Giants, Red Sox, Phillies and perhaps the Blue Jays among the teams reported to have met with Yamamoto over the past 14 days. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic characterized both the Phillies and Blue Jays as teams more on the periphery of the bidding as of this morning, however (video link). It takes only one aggressive bid to change that perception, of course, but it’s notable that they’re being framed in that manner at present.

The two New York clubs have long been known to be serious bidders for Yamamoto, though the manner in which he fits into each club’s landscape of potential offseason moves is quite different. The Yankees, for instance, have no intention of easing up even if they miss on Yamamoto. If they can’t lure the 25-year-old righty to the Bronx, Rosenthal suggests they’ll look to bolster the roster elsewhere. Among the possibilities he lays out are a run at bringing Jordan Montgomery back to the Bronx or perhaps building a stacked bullpen with pursuits of top-tier relievers like Josh Hader, Jordan Hicks and Robert Stephenson.

That seems to be a direct contrast to how the Mets are approaching the situation. The Athletic’s Will Sammon wrote over the weekend that the Mets are focused on Yamamoto and Yamamoto alone; they’re not expected to change course and pursue other marquee additions if Yamamoto ultimately signs elsewhere. Mike Puma of the New York Post reports that the Mets will submit a formal offer to Yamamoto in the next couple of days, adding that the team’s expectation has been that Yamamoto will reach a decision before next Monday. That’s entirely dependent on the player’s mindset, of course; Yamamoto’s 45-day negotiation window with MLB clubs doesn’t draw to a close until Jan. 4.

MLBTR polled readers last week, with more than 27% indicating they believe Yamamoto will sign somewhere between $300-325MM, not including the posting/release fee owed to his former club, the Orix Buffaloes. The Yankees and Dodgers were the top predicted landing spots, with both drawing about 22% of the vote (though the Yankees technically garnered 88 more of the 17,000+ votes than the Dodgers).

He would effectively surrender any chances of winning if he had boras as his agent.

Boras is like the friend that would introduce you to fentanyl because he believes it will benefit both of you equally; completely disregarding you, and your fans long term well being.

As much as I dislike Boras, the comparison is just stupid. The player knows who Boras is when he signs with him. That said, the player is the one who says yay or nay to a deal and it’s the player who ultimately decides where he’s going to play if there are multiple offers.

No, it’s a juicy comparison. Boras only cares about moneyyyyyyy.

Other agents seem to listen, process, produce a good mix of money, location, winning for their players.

I had a friend who convinced me to try ecstasy and romanticized it, making it seem like it was harmless when it was actually playing with the devil.

Yeah not many players switch to Boras. He usually signs his guys when they are young and takes them through the draft, minors, call up and then through FA. I can only think of a few players off hand that have jumped to Boras from another agency. A few teams do not like working with him. Boras was a big reason Scherzer had such a hard time finding a contract when he first hit FA in Detroit. He got lucky the Nationals were hoping to earn a bit of goodwill for when Strasburg and Harper hit FA. Surprise they got none.

Once again, it’s the usual suspects. Toronto, Giants, Red Sox and both NY teams, with the Phillies, if it’s true, finally getting into the running for one of the higher end FA. Surprisingly, one top player the cubs haven’t been mentioned as “interested” in. My guess is the Mets. I can’t see anyone out bidding Cohen.

Lost touch with reality? Did you miss the last few years where they signed Harper, Wheeler and now Nola this year? There are 13 teams that haven’t signed a FA to a bigger deal in their existence (a lot not even close) than the 3rd largest contract the Phillies have given over the last 5 years. I would love for my team to spend like yours does. Hell, even Cole Hamels from over a decade ago beats 10 teams for top contract.

Agree Cohen will have the highest offer. Phils need to save their money to resign Wheeler next year. If they signed Yama and resigned Wheeler along with Nola, Turner, Harper, and all their other high salaried players they will have the highest payroll in MLB in 2025. They’d blow through the luxury tax threshold. They’d be looking at a $300+ M payroll.

@avenger 65 I can’t see Yamamoto taking Cohen’s money. Even 5m a year over 10 years won’t be enough to lure a kid looking for a HOF career with one of the dynasties.

@Joe Kerr Wheeler will be 35 as a FA. The Phillies already look to park themselves in the toilet with 7 years to the ordinary Nola and more and more post-30 seasons from Harper, Castellanos, Schwarber, Walker.

They had a chance to pull back from the brink. Instead they scrod themselves.

What stars do they have under 30—adding a 35 yo on a 3, 4, 5 year deal? It starts to smell of what the Nationals did in re-signing Strasberg, but it’s not even nostalgia for a WS win. Just a WS appearance.

@Avenger…So, you’re doubling down on that comment, interesting. Nola doesn’t count huh?? You DO realize, he WAS a free agent, no? If he doesn’t count, can you share him with my pitiful team? Since those Nola dollars don’t count, the Phillies can actually go out and get Snell for the same cost and it will only count against the cap once, since you know, Avenger said so.

Let me ask you this, how many guys have signed a deal this off-season for over 100 million, and how many of them signed with the Phillies? Then list out all the other teams who haven’t and let me know which one you would rather be a fan of…I’m waiting on the edge of my seat for ya….

With most players money means more than playing for a Dynasty. Yama is such a great player he wants to create his own legacy. He doesn’t need the Yankees or Dodgers to do that.

He’s also signing a 10 year deal. The Yankees just traded away many of their good young players for Soto. Farm system sucks. They also missed the playoffs last year. If Soto doesn’t resign that team is done for the next 5 years. Also does Yama want to be third fiddle to Ohtani and Betts with the Dodgers and Soto and Judge with the Yanks. He is the main man with the Mets and we have a higher ranked farm system than both the Dodgers and Yankees. Also an owner who’s willing to outbid any team for a player. I guess we’ll find out soon. Hopefully by week’s end.

Every team is owned by a billionaire. They all have oodles of money. You are probably right about it being one of those teams that has a billionaire owner that is committed to spending it on a competitive roster and trying to win rings. Seattle would make an odd sounding pitch. “Sign with us. We are committed to being number one in revenue and 19th in payroll”.

I see this kind of comment often. And I wonder if it’s actually based on facts. Someone who is a “billionaire” doesn’t have billions of dollars in their bank account. They own physical assets (and some cash) that has a present day market value of billions of dollars. Some of that is value of hard capital assets, some of it is stocks or bonds, some of it is cash. So a lot of the money available to spend I’m quite sure comes in the form of debt leveraged against the value of their other assets. This is speculation on my part. I’m curious if anyone else here has thoughts on it. My point is that just because someone is a “billionaire” doesn’t meant they have just pikes and pikes of money to spend on whoever they want. Just because I make $100k/year doesn’t mean I can afford to go buy a new truck. I literally can’t. So you know, it’s not always the way it seems.

The main teams for yamamoto i dont think would be interested in bellinger. Yankees really dont have a spot for them after their recent trades, Mets other than yamamoto dont seem to be playing in the big guys ( i guess that could change if they miss out ) and not sure the dodgers are really in on him.

Bellinger’s market hasn’t reached his expectations. In part because teams are prioritizing other players to see what they have left in their budget but mostly because his targeted price is so high.

Bellinger’s market hasn’t developed for a few reasons. Boras wants a long term $200 M+ deal. The guy is coming off a great year after 3 awful years. No consistency with this guy! You have to assume if he gets even a 6 year $150 deal he will probably have 1 or 2 bad years. When you gamble with Boras on non consistent players the team usually loses.

Sure it’s desperation by someone, but even 2 win, 34 yo CFers are scarce, never mind a 4,4 win, 28 yo GGer who once won an MVP.

Bet the highest offer, as with Alonso, is from somewhere horrible (in the baseball sense).

He reportedly is asking for 200M+ and considering you have a korean ball player that has not played US baseball got over 100M+ are you at all surprised by the ask .

Even if you do comps to last year with Nimmo getting 160M he is overall probably better than him and even the prediction from MLB trade rumors has him over 250M. Also it is Boras he shoots for the moon and not what he really wants.

Crazy question, when you go into a job do you start below what you want and then try to negotiate up or do you ask for most and negotiate down. Its the same with contracts, he is going to ask for the moon (especially since he is a boras client) and negotiate down or ask for perks like no trade and opt outs.

Capt’n, would you consider either Boston or the Giants a surprise? Living in NY, all I hear are the Yankees, Mets and Dodgers. Egos forget there are other clubs too. While this is good for the players, there will eventually be a fans’ mutiny as prices to see and eat at a game will continue to climb. A benefit of getting older is I no longer choose to go to games. I’d rather buy a new OLED than go to a couple of games. Given bad knees and having to use the facilities more often (and I don’t drink beer), I won’t see much of the games in person anyway…

Would you? A decade in the Steve Cohen Clown Show for 10/330m vs 10/310m with the Dodgers, all but guaranteed a division title every year, closer to home, closer to friends and family, not getting booed during a bad game, no 75 win seasons, no drunk GMs no sexting GMs no thumbs down nonsense, just pride, professionalism, and a couple of World Series.

The Cohen era will not be a clown show. He has a long term vision for success, he has poured money into player development resources… scouting upgrades, new pitching labs, facilities, etc. As a result, the Mets currently have a top 5 farm system. His plan from the beginning has been about building a long term, sustainable winner. The recent moves when he first took over are the shiny object, he is a smart dude bringing in smart people and he’s going to be a very good owner who wants to combine his massive bankroll while building an elite farm system and player development foundation from the ground up. If you are waiting for a clown show you’re going to be very disappointed, these are not the moronic, cheap Wilpons.

          “Year 4!”

Did you fail 8th grade math?

He took over the team in the beginning of 2021, and was basically handed a dumpster fire left by the Wilpons. He was also (according to many sources) under a gentleman’s agreement with the other owners to spend a year in time-out and not start spending.

This spring will be year 3 of him actually being able to operate as he pleases…. in that time he has taken the Mets farm system from a barren wasteland into top 5 status. He has also rebuilt their entire scouting staff and built a state of the art pitching lab. They were years behind the curve in both of those regards. He hired said GM (Eppler) as a placeholder until Stearns was finally made available, this was widely speculated in the MLB world and known to everybody except you. It was the guy he wanted from day one.

This is just endless speculation by sportswriters who probably don’t have any more real information than MLBTR commenters.

Passan’s column seems the weirdest to me. He breathlessly informs us that nobody has made a real offer, then backs off halfway and says teams have made “preliminary” offers. What does that mean? They’re only offering preliminary dollars instead of real dollars? If a club blew away everybody else on those “preliminary” offers, I bet we’d be seeing a press conference right now welcoming Yamamoto.

If I had to pick a club, I’d say it’s the Mets. Cohen just can’t help himself. He’ll spend some ungodly amount to land the biggest fish.

When are you going to understand money will not be a factor for Yamamoto as he wants to play on mlb brightest stage and win. Ask yourself if you are a star, what team offers the best scenario to be a recognized brand worldwide. Its the Yankees, NOT Mets or Dodgers. Yamamoto had it in his mind to be a Yankee from day one. If Hal’s bid is reasonable and up there with the best of them he has an excellent chance of luring him away.

I just don’t see the Mets doing this after they went so far all in with Sherzer and Verlander, etc. and then blew it all up like they did. They’re still on the hook for those guys.

The Mets have a long way to go to put together a functional team that can contend for the playoffs and so after they traded away their highest profile, most expensive arms and are still in actuality paying the majority of those guys’ salaries, I don’t see why they’d now add another $35M-$40M a year pitcher to a staff they just threw in the towel on.

I think the reason they might do it is because they have about $90 mil coming off of the books going into 2025 and they have very little pitching to speak of. If they want to compete in 2025, a young ace would be a good start. Given Yamamoto’s age, it’s a totally different situation than the Scherzer and Verlander contracts. Not saying it’ll happen, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see an offer like that from Cohen and the Mets.

Bottom line is, I’d be shocked to see the Dodgers add *another $35M+ to their payroll, even for their seemingly limitless budget and I doubt they’d convince Yomomoto to defer 98% of it lol and I think with their re-vamped outfield, the Yankees look a lot more appealing than they did going into the off season and the idea of a 1-2 punch of Cole, who just won a Cy Young, and Yamomoto going 1-2, with potential bounceback from Rodon, etc. could be appealing enough to Yamomoto to pick the Yankees, especially with their history of doing well with international players.

Obviously, the teams that lost out on these guys may pivot and spend more on guys like snell or Montgomery (who should come back to the Yankees and his best friend Cole ) but it has to piss some of the free agents off that they need to wait.

It feels very much like LA or NY (with 2 options in NY). I would be thrilled to see Toronto, SF, Philly or anyone else, but this seems like anticipating the ending of a movie we all know the ending to.

Yamamoto would give Toronto one of the best, if not the best rotations in baseball.

But sadly, given that their current lineup projects as Bo Bichette and 8 mannequins dressed in Jays uniforms, they have bigger issues than a starter.

NY and LA feel like the likeliest spots.

@Canuckle I think calling Vlad Jr a mannequin is a bit of a stretch, even if he had a down year last year. Not going out on much of a limb to predict a huge rebound from him, heading into his age 25 season. Jays have at least gotten to the playoffs the past couple years, they have flaws but are not exactly in shambles.

That was meant as a bit of a tongue-in-cheek joke but it’s a joke based loosely in reality:

Catcher – who knows what they get from either

1B – Vladdy is at this point slightly above league average until he proves otherwise

          2B – Mannequin

          SS – Bo Bichette

          3B – Mannequin

RF – Springer is league average when healthy

LF/CF – Varsho is great in the field but a mannequin might be more productive at the plate

          LF/CF – Mannequin

          DH – Mannequin

This has been slowest, lamest offseason I can ever recall. Other than the Ohtani signing and Soto/Glasnow trades, not a whole lot going on apart from some moves by KC of all teams. There is usually more activity by this time in the offseason, about time some guys start signing!

Come on. Give the press some credit. The Red Sox have been “in” on every Free Agent and trade possibility. The Craig Breslow era has been something to behold. The Sox Winterfest should be something to stay tuned for. The fans were cranked up last year. This year the fest should be “Amazing” or “Awesome” or a combination thereof. Not

This isn’t even close to being the slowest or lamest offseason. The top FA signed a record deal, the best hitter in the NL was traded across leagues, and Glasnow was sent West, while Aaron Nola, Eduardo Rodriguez, Lourdes Gurriel Jr, Seth Lugo, and Sonny Gray have all signed.

Even Korean import Jung Hoo Lee made a splash with the Giants. And all of those FA players were in MLBTR’s top 20 Free Agents list.

If the Angels were actually serious about not rebuilding and pushing to contend, this would be the guy to pull out all the stops to sign. TOR arm they need, young enough to still be that arm if they pivot in a year or two to a type of quick rebuild, replaces some of the market lost with Ohtani. But, who believes they’re actually serious about competing?

YY would probably want quite a Bit more $$$’s then he might accept from a Team going for it now.

No one seems to think Boston has a chance to sign him. They are going to be super-aggressive in their offer to Yamamoto and don’t discount the existing relationship with former NPB teammate Yoshida who’s playing in Boston now.

If Boston does end up missing out, they need to make a quick pivot to Imanaga and someone else like Montgomery. The Red Sox ‘rebuild’ is almost complete; they just don’t have the pitching prospects to match their offensive youth influx so they need to buy it.

I think boston will be aggressive..but not to the tune of making him the highest paid pitcher in baseball.if thats the route this takes sign montgomery instead and go after cole or burnes next winter..or better sign monty..trade for burnes and sign him in season.

That’s the way I see it. Most of the writers and fans seem like they don’t acknowledge the concept of poor signings. Every player has the capacity to be a good signing, but past a certain point, they won’t be worth it.

Why couldn’t we have just done some decent reporting these last 2+weeks and came out and said, he’s meeting with teams, but there is 0pct chances a deal will be made at this time, holding up near all of future decision making for MLB FAs and teams that revolve around Yamamota deal being done. So expect a team like the Royals to be active only during these next 2 weeks.

SF Giants are not a “mystery team”, but I suspect people will be surprised when he signs with them. I’m pretty certain that Farhan has an absolute blank check from ownership on Yamamoto and he will absolutely have the highest offer if money is the deciding factor. Giants are desperate for a big free agent signing, and this guy checks just about every box. My prediction is the Giants sweep in and get him much to the surprise of everyone in New York and Los Angeles. And I’m a Dodger fan.

The Mets will field a competitive team if they don’t sign Yamamoto or any other pitchers. I actually respect Stearns and Cohen if they determine that Yamamoto is singularly important to them in the long-term. If Yamamoto is willing to sign with them on those terms, good for him and them.

Free agency is already fraught with great risk. When teams start “settling” for players that are really not fits and giving long-term contracts to them the risks become even greater.

Thee was a report that the Giants and Red Sox made offers of about 300 million. Who knows what to believe. Would be stunned if he was seriously considering Boston. Most of the time the Japanese players sign with west coast teams to be closer to Japan as opposed to the East Coast. He will use the Red Sox offer to go back to the Dodgers like Ohtani used Toronto. The Yankees will make an excessive offer and they may convince him to go there. I am also sure that Matsusaka buried the Red Sox. I am sure they talk to each other as well. He was maddening to watch getting two strikes on a hitter and then walk the hitter. He would have 130 pitches by the 5th inning sadly.

A great pitcher should want to test himself against great hitters and the ongoing adjustments they make to each other. And no one is really writing about this. Yamamoto should sign with the Mets and get opportunity to face Ohtani, Betts, Freeman, Judge, Soto, Harper. Avoid the very short Yankees Stadium porch. And Phillies bandbox. SF has big field, but not stars. What’s the direction of that franchise and their farm?

Citi Field is fair ballpark. Mets have good farm with some very athletic, two-way position player prospects working their way up to the majors. 5 in MLB Pipeline’s Top 100. Good starting pitching is also developing in the upper minors. I think AA Tidwell and Scott could end up in Top 100, while catching prospect Parada might miss the Top 100 cut this time, lose his spot.

Mets also have a solid core of position players at the major league level right now. AA prospects Gilbert, Acuna and Williams when they arrive will inject speed, offense and defense, hit tools, pop, big energy. Excitement! Mauricio when he returns from knee injury is speed, energy, switch hitting power guy. This is good future for Yamamoto to choose the Mets, and get opportunity to face the likes of Ohtani, Betts, Harper and others.

If I were Yamamoto (and I might be…), I would see signing with the Giants as an absolute marketing goldmine. Imagine the drama of facing off regularly with the other Japanese star and exporting the Dodgers/Giants rivalry. Nothing else boosts his profile like that.

From the beginning his agent said he wants to sign with a team with one of his countrymen….. If that is true that leaves the Mets (Senga), Dodgers (Ohtani) and the Red Sox (Yoshida). Lets see if that stands true and if it is then how can the Yankees be a front runner? My Guess is he signs with the Mets because they offer the most money along with one of his friends being on the team.
