NL East Notes: Phillies, Harper, Finnegan, Alcantara

By Mark Polishuk | December 1, 2024 at 5:05pm CDT

The Phillies are known to be looking for outfield help this winter, though moving Bryce Harper from first base back into the outfield doesn’t appear to be a consideration.  Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer wonders if the Phils could possibly re-evaluate this stance, as Lauber feels the first base market (for both free agents and trade possibilities) is much deeper than this winter’s outfield market.  Of the top outfielders in free agency, Juan Soto seems likely to be going to one of the other big-market clubs, while Teoscar Hernandez and Anthony Santander each have the strikeout or chase rate issues that the Phillies are already looking to correct within their current lineup.  Philadelphia did have interest in Hernandez back at the 2023 trade deadline when the slugger was still a member of the Mariners, but Lauber notes that the Phils passed on Hernandez under the similar logic that Hernandez’s power wouldn’t offset his tendency to swing and miss.

Harper’s first full season as a first baseman was a success, as he posted strong defensive numbers and kept up his usual high standards at the plate.  These results have understandably left all parties satisfied with just keeping Harper at the cold corner, though Harper has expressed an openness to playing the outfield again and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski didn’t entirely close the door on the possibility (“I can’t say that we’d never do it, but it’s not something that we are thinking of or wanting to do“) when discussing the subject at the GM Meetings last month.

If Harper did return to his old spot in right field, Brandon Marsh and Johan Rojas would likely become the Phillies’ new center field platoon, and Nick Castellanos would presumably be shifted over to left field.  This arrangement wouldn’t exactly make for the strongest defensive outfield, even if the Phillies tried to balance out the situation by adding a stronger defender at first base.  Trading Castellanos to clear space in the outfield might be the ideal outcome, though that is obviously easier said than done considering the two years and $40MM remaining on the veteran’s contract.

More from the NL East…

  • Before the Nationals parted ways with Kyle Finnegan, the two parties at least had some talks about a new contract prior to the non-tender deadline, but the Washington Post’s Andrew Golden hears from a source that “the sides were not close to making a deal to avoid arbitration.”  Finnegan was projected by MLBTR’s Matt Swartz to earn $8.6MM in his final year of arb eligibility, as traditional counting stats like saves (Finnegan had 28 saves in 2023 and 38 saves in 2024) tend to boost a reliever’s arbitration salaries by a significant degree, regardless of Finnegan’s otherwise rather shaky secondary metrics.  It seems as though the Nationals would’ve been open to retaining the closer at a lower number, but ultimately weren’t comfortable retaining Finnegan and possibly facing a higher salary via arbitration hearing if the Nats couldn’t have potentially traded Finnegan at some later date this offseason.
  • Sandy Alcantara underwent Tommy John surgery in October 2023, and after over a year of recovery and rehab, the Marlins ace appears to be making good progress towards a return.  In a recent appearance on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM (link to X), manager Clayton McCullough said he met with Alcantara within the last week and “he looked great, he sounded great, felt like he was really right on track at this point….All signs point to things looking very positive for the start of the season.”  The winner of the 2022 NL Cy Young Award, Alcantara threw more innings than any other pitcher in baseball over the 2019-2022 seasons as the anchor of the Marlins’ pitching staff, before that workload seemingly caught up to him late in the 2023 campaign.  Since Alcantara is owed at least $36MM over the last two years of his contract, some trade buzz will be inevitable if he looks like his old self at the start of 2025, though the rebuilding Marlins already told Alcantara last summer that they likely weren’t trading him this offseason.

I don’t think it’s a hard bet to take the guy that was healthy over the guy that’s coming off injury. From TJS, after the ASB is the reality of when Alcantara can start showing his old form.

“Of the top outfielders in free agency, Juan Soto seems likely to be going”
Soto’s name and the phrase “top outfielders” should never be in the same sentence.

Outfielder is simply a position on a field. No connotation of their defensive ability is attached to it. His bat makes him a “top Outfielder”.

If I were Only off take a look at Profar or maybe gamble on a short-term deal like Verdugo.

The press eschewed defense a couple of years ago. It’s an afterthought.

The game is now geared for the casual fan. The casual fan couldn’t care less about defense. They just want to see the ball fly over the fence.

Harper plays a much better 1B. I like Alonso but they aren’t moving Harper off 1B for him.

Also, Dunsel – you don’t just rotate between 1B and CF like it’s little league. Just because they physically can doesn’t mean they should or would do it.

Me, and many articles on this site. Phillies have an immediate need at CF and Beli plays CF (along with LF/RF). To trade for him and not put him in CF is a waste. If you plan to put him in a corner OF spot you can just sign a free agent like Teoscar or Santander.

The writer stated that the Phillies weren’t considering FA options Hernandez or Santander because of their high strikeout rate. He stayed that the Phillies already have to many of those types and are trying to move away from those bats for more contract oriented hitters. I would think Alonzo is indicative of the guy they DON’T want. I would suggest Profar or maybe take a gamble on Verdugo on a 1 year redeem- your market value deal.

DeGrom will spend most of his time on the IL. He’s solid when he’s healthy, but those days are few and far between.

And counting on Alcantara to be his old self on Opening Day is expecting too much. I’d imagine he’s going to need a month or so to shake off the rust, even with a full Spring Training.

Alcantara wasn’t even good in 2023. And he was outperforming his peripherals before that. He’s not likely ever going to be a frontline starter again.

If they find a way to swap out Castellanos & Walker for something useful, it would be a huge win. I think they could be a finalist for Soto but ultimately he goes to a NY team. A lot of things are kind of contingent on that. Still think the Phillies should try acquire Mike Trout when Soto signs elsewhere, sending Walker or Casty back to offset some salary. Try to squeeze Reid Detmers and/or Ben Joyce out of their fav trade partners in the deal. Plan C after Soto & Trout: Astros trying to figure out a way to retain Alex Bregman while adding a CF, 1B & SP. Looking for takers on Ryan Pressly 15mil salary. Phillies take on Pressly (15) & Tucker (18mil). Astros acquire Castellanos (2/40mil), Kody Clemens (1B), Johan Rojas (CF), Alex MacFarlane (#14) & Christian McGowan (#21) – reducing salary by about $12mil for 2025 and adding two nice prospects to barren farm system. 5 players for 2.

Phillies should bring in a couple of these quality bullpen vets in FA. Offense is fine. Everyone but Rojas is a quality hitter but he’s young and can’t be much worse than he was. Maybe a 4th OF. They’ll regret it if they move Bohm imo. Walker couldn’t be much worse so might as well give him a shot too

The Phillies’ reluctance to rethink Harper’s position reeks of stubbornness over strategy, while the Nationals’ arbitration handling of Finnegan highlights their penny-pinching priorities over competitiveness. Meanwhile, the Marlins clinging to Alcantara as trade buzz looms feels like a desperate attempt to mask a lack of direction in their rebuild.

Trading Alcantara now would be asset mismanagement on a grand scale. He is worth pennies on the dollar right now, let him come back and show teams he is healthy and then flip him at the deadline for something closer to his full value. Rushing to trade him right now for mid tier prospects is how you stay rebuilding.

As a braves fan I would absolutely hate to see this happen, but does it not sound amazing for Phillies fans if they did indeed move Harper back to the outfield but signed Christian walker to play first base? That is something I could honestly see happening. Scary to think of as a braves fan, but honestly would be kind of cool to see too, I’m not even going to lie.

The Phils could do a lot more with what they have if the inmates weren’t running the asylum. Harper wants to play 1B. So, the Phils let him play there, even though the Phils might be able to acquire Walker or Arraez to play 1B if Harper returned to RF or DHed. Turner apparently looks at LF as a demotion. So, the Phils let him play SS, even though they might be able to acquire Adames or Arenado if Turner moved to LF. Since the Phils’ Sosa and Stott are much better defensive shortstops than Turner, the Phils would have a great deal of flexibility playing new acquisitions at different positions. Schwarber wants to lead off. So, the Phils let him lead off, even though Harper is the best player suited to lead off for the Phils, and the Phils base running game grinds to a halt with Schwarber on base. The bottom line is the Phils need to significantly shake up their current team and add a healthy dose of new blood if they want to keep pace with the Braves and Mets next season. Schwarber, Realmuto, and Suarez are free agents after 2025, and along with Taijuan Walker, have become expendable and will never have greater trade value. They could easily be traded and replaced by a DH by committee, the Phils’ minor leaguers Rafael Marchan, and Andrew Painter, and possible acquisition of Sasaki. Considering the Phils’ concerns about Santander and Hernandez and the reluctance of Harper and Turner to change positions, the Phils could immediately improve by making a trade with the Cubs. The Cubs would send center fielder Cody Bellinger, left fielder Ian Happ and reliever Tyson Miller to the Phils for DH Kyle Schwarber, starter Taijuan Walker and outfielder Brandon Marsh. The deal, which might require some money and/or prospects as sweeteners, would immediately benefit both teams. Icing on the cake for the Phils would be resigning reliever Hoffman, trading for closer Helsley, and acquiring free agent starter Sasaki.
