The Red Sox were faced with a tough loss over the weekend when star third baseman Alex Bregman left the team to sign with the Cubs on a five-year, $175MM deal. That contract came in just $10MM ahead of Boston’s own offer in terms of sticker price, but deferred money and the lack of a no-trade clause further depreciated the Red Sox’ offer relative to that of the Cubs. The loss of Bregman left chief baseball officer Craig Breslow to search for a pivot, and he found just that yesterday when he signed southpaw Ranger Suarez to a five-year deal.
The $130MM pact places Suarez alongside Garrett Crochet and Sonny Gray as a member of Boston’s front of the rotation headed into the season, but it did little to address the hole that Bregman’s departure creates on the infield. Yesterday’s deal helped to bring down the temperature among fans in Boston and ease the pressure on Breslow to find a star, but it’s not hard to see why an addition could still be attractive given the number of question marks and overall lack of impact all around the roster.
Trevor Story delivered a 20/20 season last year but will be 33 years old this year and just played 100 games in a season for the first time since 2021. Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell entered last season as two of the game’s top prospects but Mayer has a checkered injury history of his own while there’s been some indications the Red Sox could prefer Campbell in the outfield rather than the infield. Neither was an above-average hitter in 2025, either. While both are young enough for a potential big step forward, a team with World Series aspirations like the Red Sox would be taking a big risk if they hang their hopes on young talents figuring it out. Ceddanne Rafaela has experience at second base, but is one of baseball’s top defensive center fielders and might be wasted at the keystone.
It would be easy to say the Red Sox should simply sign one of the top infielders available in free agency, and there’s certainly merit to the argument. The Red Sox are a big market club that just dumped Rafael Devers‘s salary on the Giants over the summer. RosterResource estimates a $266MM payroll for the club in terms of luxury tax dollars headed into 2026, a figure that falls $20MM behind the Yankees and $45MM behind the Blue Jays even when looking only at their rivals in the AL East.
On the other hand, Boston’s payroll is already the highest it’s ever been in terms of luxury tax dollars. Even the actual cash outlay is second only to the 2022 team in the post-Mookie Betts era. Trading away someone like Jordan Hicks or Masataka Yoshida could help but neither has huge trade value right now.
But they don’t have a ton of options left in free agency. Bregman is a Cub and Bo Bichette reportedly has an agreement in place with the Mets. Eugenio Suarez is still out there but it’s unclear how willing the Sox are to spend on him.
Perhaps the trade market is the best bet. the addition of Suarez only further bolstered a rotation that has an excess of quality options. Using a young pitcher like Payton Tolle, Connelly Early, or Kyle Harrison as part of a package to land an impact infielder certainly seems attractive. The team also has an excess of outfield talent at the moment, particularly given the fact that both Yoshida and Triston Casas figure to be battling for playing time at DH. Trading Casas or an outfielder like Jarren Duran could make sense to clean up that logjam somewhat.
The Diamondbacks have reportedly taken Ketel Marte off the market but recent reporting has suggested that maybe Boston will try to change that stance. Even if he’s not realistic, there are still plenty of intriguing players who could be available via trade. Boston could make a third trade with the Cardinals and their newly-minted president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom in order to bring super utility man Brendan Donovan into the fold, though he would do little to balance a heavily left-handed lineup. Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner could be another option, though all indications are that Chicago would need to be overwhelmed in order to move their longtime infielder. It could be easier to pry away Matt Shaw, but the youngster isn’t much more well-established than Mayer and Campbell at this point, which could make him an imperfect fit for the team.
Perhaps the most attractive trade candidate out there at the moment would be Astros infielder Isaac Paredes, who was pushed off third base in Houston by the acquisition of Carlos Correa and has no clear path to everyday at-bats with his current team given the presence of Christian Walker and Yordan Alvarez at first base and DH respectively. Paredes is no match for Bregman defensively, but Bregman himself showed that a player who benefits from the Crawford Boxes in Houston can enjoy similar success hitting off/over the Green Monster at Fenway Park. As a 124 wRC+ hitter over the past four years, Paredes would add a viable middle-of-the-order bat to the Boston infield and create an intriguing, high-upside corner infield duo with newly-minted first baseman Willson Contreras.
Perfect as that fit might seem on paper, however, the Astros have signaled their reluctance to moving him — despite what looks like an overcrowded infield mix. Regular playing time for Paredes would be just one Spring Training injury away, and GM Dana Brown said publicly in November that he has “no interest” in moving the righty-swinging slugger. With free agent alternatives dwindling on the open market, plenty of suitors for both Donovan and Hoerner that the Red Sox would need to compete with, and hesitance on the part of the Cubs and Astros to part with their players, pulling off a trade could be easier said than done at this stage of the offseason.
That leaves us to circle back to the possibility that the team doesn’t add a regular to the lineup this winter. Mayer and Campbell could enter camp as the favorites for third and second base respectively, though if the team remains committed to trying Campbell in the outfield, David Hamilton and Romy Gonzalez could form a platoon at the keystone or Rafaela could shift back to the infield. If the Red Sox were to go this route, they would surely add a veteran infielder like Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Yoan Moncada, or Ramon Urias to the lineup in order to provide some competition for the youngsters in Spring Training and overall improve the depth of what would be an injury-plagued infield mix. While it would be a risky move to rely mostly on internal options, it would offer Mayer and Campbell the best opportunity to carve out everyday roles for themselves and might be the only option at the team’s disposal if they aren’t able to pull off some kind of trade in the ten weeks remaining before Opening Day.
How do MLBTR readers think the Red Sox will look to round out their infield? Will they turn to a free agent like Suarez, even if it means finding a way to dump salary elsewhere on the roster? Could they instead try and work out a trade for someone like Paredes, Hoerner, or Donovan? Or will they instead rely primarily on their internal options? Have your say in the poll below:
How will the Red Sox fill out their infield?
-
They'll trade for a regular infielder like Paredes or Hoerner 46% (3,006)
-
They won't add a regular infielder and stick with internal options and depth signings 35% (2,288)
-
They'll sign a regular infielder like Suarez 19% (1,204)
Total votes: 6,498

THey aren’t signing Suarez unless they send money out. Suarez will put them over the 284 mil magic number. It’s going to be a trade.
Brendan Donovan is available, but the Cardinals might need the Boston Red Sox farm system. The Red Sox can trade Connelly Early and a few other prospects for Donovan.
Donovan is left handed. Posted earlier that a trade involving at least Duran and Baty seems likely. Bello from Boston and quality prospects from the Mets needed to balance out the trade and to give “poor John” salary relief.
Thought Baty was a switch hitter but due to the control years and salary, I’d prefer him to Paredes for example. I see his potential.
As I reposted, I thought he was a switch hitter but with his years of control and cost, he’s better option over Donovan. Cost would be much less as well.
Mayer can’t stay healthy and Hamilton is unlikely to break camp. Just too many infielders. Thus, I have no issue taking on a strong defensive third baseman like Baty. Watching him the second half like I did in NY last year, I gained a lot of respect for him. I see two additional trades to clear up the Sox pitching and outfield log jams. Adding Baty and Marte while also adding several minor league studs would do just that. The cost? Likely Duran, Bello, Crawford and likely Early. I’d prefer to lose Harrison or Tolle but I realize they could get a young stud like arm from the Mets (not McLean) in a Duran led deal.
Dewey- There was another update on Marte saying they have no plans of changing their mind and putting him back on the market, so I assume we can cross him off the list. I don’t see enough offensive upside in Baty to be worth giving up anything significant for him. We really need to prioritize a right handed power bat. I also would prefer to see them keep Bello and Early.
Uncle, I’m of the belief that AZ is trying to leverage as big a return as possible (who wouldn’t?) so why wouldn’t they publically continue to state Marte is not available? As for Baty, I just saw him make plays at third that Dalbac for example could not make. Given Mayer’s propensity for injuries until he plays a full healthy season, how can a team with championship aspirations depend on him when you already have Story. I’m hoping his rough September was exhaustion after playing so few games the previous years but it could also have been an injury he did not want to disclose. Also, Baty looked very good down the stretch at the plate and hopefully he matured and is hitting his stride. if I were the Mets, I’d keep Baty at third, mostly DH Bichette and keep Vientos in AAA to start the year. If though, they are willing to give up Baty and strong minor league talent from their farm system, I’d trade Duran snd Bello. Such lowers Boston’s 26 payroll and gives them a deeper farm so they could pry Marte from AZ (assuming AZ wasn’t insisting on Duran and Bello).
If Marte is available, I would understand them being willing to give up more valuable pieces to get him. Doesn’t he only have two years left? If so you don’t want to give up too much controllable talent unless your focus is completely on a win now scenario which has not been Breslow’s calling card.
Early or Tolle for Donovan would be a massive overpay.
Not that I think the Sox should horde their prospects, Donovan just isn’t that good.
Red Sox could give up a lot less and score Casey Schmitt from the Giants. They’d get a Gold Glove third baseman with a canon for an arm. He hits RH, has pop and is much better suited for 3b than 2b where he’s playing for the Giants. Jake Bennett? David Sandin?
Pete, I can’t say I know Schmitt but I’ll look him up. Thanks for the suggestion.
I would rather stay away from someone coming off of surgery, go with Mayer instead. Schmitt’s numbers don’t look like he would add a significant upgrade to the offense, aside from being right handed.
Bwahahahahaha
Severe over pay
You can have Sandoval and Campbell and Yoshida for Donovan, Duran Early is never happening
They are trying to reduce payroll so they would not have any interest in Yoshida. I agree about not giving up Early and Duran looks to have more power than Donovan so he is not going to improve the offense.
They just gotta let Mayer and Campbell take the reins for the first half of the season then the Sox can upgrade at the deadline. Those are 2 guys that ranked in the top 10-15 in all of baseball last year, let em play! Especially with the rotation they’ve put together.
Campbell despite his contract has to earn his roster spot given how poorly he played on both sides of the ball. Take out April to see how bad he was at the plate. His glove though can cost the club more than his bat can win. He was that bad. I realize he’s young but he still needs to prove himself. Mayer “just” needs to stay healthy. A big “just”…
Take out April and your judging him on 130 plate appearances
And at Worcester where he did not stand out. His bat could be mental, being demoted and so young but his glove in Boston made Manny Ramirez look like a gold glover and Campbell’s second base work was even worse.
And he had a rib injury
Pitchers figured him out and he couldn’t figure out how to adjust to their adjustments after that. This isn’t a sample size issue, it’s a he clearly was not ready for Major League pitching issue. I’m still excited about him in the big picture – he showed some nice flashes in April before the book was written on him! But for the sake of his confidence you don’t bring him back up until there’s zero doubt he’s ready this time. That’s why you can maybe plan on him for 2027 and beyond, but not this year.
Or they could sell off at the deadline if that doesn’t pan out
Breslow did not say that Campbell is an OF. He said that he would get a few games there when Abreu was hurt last season.
He played 5 of 14 games in LF for Caguas in Puerto Rico.
I looked and there is not one article or interview I could find where he said that.
All Breslow has said is that he has the talent to play there, not that they have moved him there permanantly. He did say that in a press conference this off season that he would be in the mix at 2B.
He only said “his athleticism may play in the short-term … in the outfield”. He said much the same thing when he filled in for Abreu last season. The keywords are “in the short-term”.
Mayer is absolutely going to play. However, he can’t play both second and third at the same time. He will get one of those spots, and we need to find someone else who can man the other until Campbell is ready (or someone else, if they keep him in the OF).
Campbell is not ready and would make no sense to include on the major league roster if they want to win. He needs time to get his confidence back and perfect both his offensive and defensive tools.
Can’t have Hoerner. We’re in win now mode.
Don’t want him for just a year at the Cubs’ targeted cost.
Cubs can’t do anything about him signing an extension. Only option is a year.
They’re not going to trade him. Why insert yourself into arguing a pointless position?
Mets might give Baty now in a trade for Duran. Marcelo can move to 2B.
Baty plus?
Baty for Duran and a low level prospect ought to get it done. Depends how much money the Sox want to throw in
way too little for Duran
Baty and a top 5 prospect for Duran and a depth pitcher like Crawford. Baty has very little to no value.
No way. Everyone treats Duran like he’s average. See my other posts first my assessment.
Your comments are silly BANANAS.
Sox wouldn’t trade Duran for Baty straight up, they’d laugh at the Mets.
Bananas, has been day drinking again.
Keep BatySox dont want that clown
Bananas is a good username because Baty for Duran is just that. Come into this universe before posting
Baty is a lefty. Boston will want a right-handed batter. That’s why Donovan also makes no sense.
Difference Mafia is price and years of control. I’d take Baty who can field the position.
If they pick up another bat, it absolutely has to be a right handed one, imo.
Yes and yesterday I posted about re-visiting AZ as they can adjust their offer to include Bello now that Suarez is on board.
Awful trade for Boston
Campbell is an outfielder now… Put Mayer at 3b and trade for Paredes at 2b. He was a good defender there for TB. Use Romy as a utility guy. Let Campbell and Casas rebuild their value and keep some of our assets for the trade deadline.
I dont understand why people keep trying to day that. At no point has Breslow said he is moving to the OF full time, only that he had the talent to fill in for Abreu when he was on the IL.
are they giving up on kcamp after 1 bad month when he went straight from AA to the majors? they put so much pressure on him as a 22 yr old rookie. “play 2b, no play ss, no play cf, no play 2b again, no play 1b, umm we dunno what the f we want”
no but he’s moving to the outfield
He was equally as bad in the OF last season and in my view both he and the team should disregard the contract. Don’t expect anything in 26 and let Campbell prove himself regardless of the level. Not all 21 year olds have the maturity nor the skill set. Hopefully, he just needs more time.
They moved him to the OF, he played the OF in the winter league he played in. That just adds to the massive logjam in the OF. They should have stuck it out with him at 2B.
@joemo
Sox dont know how to stick it out
They’d rather just give up on players, trade them, or let them walk
Could also go glass 1/2 full and say he had 1 good month before pitchers adjusted to him.
But I too would lean towards patience – he performed decently with the bat in AAA. The problem is the defensive fit.
From what I saw he was horrible wherever he fielded. Give him time in the minors. The hope is after trading Garcia and letting Ref walk, is he can be the righty bench/4th outfielder but unless he rebounded like Duran did in 23, he has no MLB value and should start in AAA. It took time for Duran to learn Fenway’s outfield and hopefully Campbell will too. Let’s just not rush him even with that contract.
Of the 14 games KC played for Caguas, 5 were in LF.
He hasn’t been moved to the OF. He got some time in the OF. There is a difference.
Ian Browne published this 19 days ago: “Though the Red Sox already have a log-jam in the outfield, Boston’s current plan is to have Campbell focus out there rather than the infield, where he looked clunky at times.”
I have read this same bit of news numerous times in various posts, on various sites.
Baseball – he doesn’t have a position listed for the other games. I’m not sure how that winter ball season works, but he wasn’t ping ponging between LF and 2B. If he was playing defensively, he was in the outfield.
I would occasionally see write-ups on the Puerto Rican league, probably on SoxProspects, and I’m pretty sure I read that Campbell was DH’ing when he wasn’t in the OF.
Is there any acceptable utility infield FAs left? I’m wondering part of the thought process is trying to do some sort of rotation of Mayer, Story, Campbell, and Gonzalez and adding in someone else to pick up the slack if Campbell doesn’t look like he’ll cut in it ST.
Depends on your definition of acceptable. Rengifo, moncada, old friend iglesias, IKF?
Campbell needs to start in the minors and get things figured out, he is not ready for the majors. It also sounds like his focus is just on the outfield after his poor defense last year. They were a little too impulsive when they gave him the contract.
Seems odd that they’d be lower on Mayer. Guy was a top 15 prospect in 2024 and while he wasn’t particularly impressive last year, he still has a lot of room to grow. Still, if they maybe want some options with upside and want to clear their logjam in the outfield, Shaw+ for Duran could help both clubs out. He might’ve only been a top 50-60 prospect in 2024 but he seemed to stick better last year and showed a ton of upside; speed, defense and solid position versatility.
Or #39 Marco Luciano. Sites that rank prospects aren’t good at it. Mayer has developed exactly as expected. Why 3 teams passed on drafting him. Why Sox went so hard on Bregman. All that said he can even should be a average to above average starting 3b.
I think the issues with getting injured are the big knock to Mayer. If he can stay healthy they will get him playing time.
Wouldn’t Donovan make more sense than Hoerner??
Nooooooo
They have to trade at least one starter and one outfielder. They can’t all play. I know everyone loooooves rafaella, but other than the month he is blisteringly hot at the play he’s an automatic out for the other 5 months
An automatic out is a stretch, he’s fine offensively. His value is that he is arguably the best defensive outfielder in baseball.
Every guy who’s play CF, and many of the RF, in Boston for the last 20 years has been called the best defender in baseball. Is it something in the water or do the field dimensions make them look really good or maybe they focus on OF defense?
Ohyeah, Fenwsy is difficult and the way Rafaela and Abreu handle it (reminds me of Lynn and Evans), they provide with their defense in addition to being competent hitters.
His offense was better than you are giving him credit for. He would go hot and cold, but still has time to get that straightened out. His defense is what takes him to the next level. You can afford to have a few players whose defense is stronger than their offense.
The obvious choice is Kung Fu Panda 2.
They aren’t going over the 284 million mark, so it’s a trade. They are in contention and their in house option seem weak.
We need high quality defense!
We are covered at 1B, ideally move Story to 2B, Mayer at SS (until he gets hurt)… need either 3B or SS… move other players accordingly. We have to a defense team with the pitching we have. GOOD pitching/ defense always beats good hitting.
From what the Red Sox have said, they see Campbell as more of an outfielder now, so he’s just not an option at second for people suggesting that.
si.com/mlb/red-sox/onsi/boston-red-sox-news/kristi…
With all the SP depth they’ve built up, I imagine they have to be looking to trade from that for an infielder. If not, they just have an absurd amount of depth there.
Makes their outfield log jam even more pronounced
Very, very true.
After signing Ranger they’ve got the young pitching Arizona wants for Ketel
Would make me feel a lot better about missing out on some free agents
Rafaela is the option at 2nd….You play KC as the 4th outfielder…The guy that clogs it up is Yoshida because Casas you’d think would be DH when healthy. They may say they want Raffy in Center but the lack of moves says he’s playing 2nd this year.
They’ve got the OF and pitching depth to trade from, if they want to make that move. The Mets would be a great trade partner with Bichette in the fold and Baty/Vientos blocked. The Phillies would probably be happy to move Bohm, especially if one of the extra corner guys from Boston were made available. What they supposedly need isn’t hard to find, and plenty of contenders need what Boston has in its depth.
Vientos offensive numbers declined quite a bit last year, I don’t see enough upside to give up anything substantial.
Why are there so many Red Sox posts?
Because Red Sox fans pay MLBTradeRumors bills
I don’t think MLBTR is corrupt.
Nor do I. It was a joke. If it is accurate that there’s a disproportionate amount of Red Sox fans paying subscription fees, I could see them creating more Sox articles. On the other hand, we HATE fluff articles that don’t say anything. I’m generally happy with my subscription because I can trust that when they aren’t reporting, there’s nothing substantive to report.
You said, ” If it is accurate that there’s a disproportionate amount of Red Sox fans paying subscription fees, I could see them creating more Sox articles.”
How is that not corruption?
What would be corrupt about it?
MLBTR isn’t corrupt, and I need to say this to continue.
MLBTR creates the posts based on what’s happening. If a team has a lot of buzz going around, they create more posts because of that. However, if they create more posts because there are more subscribers from a certain fan base, doesn’t that just seem wrong?
The big market teams have more fans because they are in big markets, duh. Of course they will post more on big market teams because they get more clicks. Clicks pay the bills.
@Astros Easy Peasy- BoSox,Met and Yankee fans along with ESPN are under the assumption that That MLB solely exist because of those 3 teams. And thats why every year. They feel the need to televise every Red Sox/Yankee series on National TV.
Only because Sox vs. Yanks is the best baseball any 2 teams can put together and everybody knows it.
Maybe Red Sox articles get an above average number of views.
Because we have the most rings the last 21 years and put down the Stros and Dodgers like dogs.
Big market teams spend more money meaning they make more moves than small market teams meaning they’re in more articles than small market teams
I think part of it is demand. The Sox fans are a significant group of readers on the site, and this has been a very active offseason.
Too bad Vaughn Grissom didn’t work out.
He worked out exactly as expected by everyone who knows a lil something about baseball.
They need to prioritize defense in whomever they pick up. A catcher is playing first and story is average at best if i recall.
A 1b is playing 1b and a good one.
They need a right handed power bat. Ideally someone who provides decent defense. They don’t need a defensive wiz who can’t hit.
Astros aren’t trading Paredes because they need to find playing time for Walker and Alvarez. Silly poll.
Your comment is silly.
Correction: Astros say that aren’t trading Paredes but will in the end because Alvarez takes up the DH slot and nobody is interested in Walker.
Sadness.
Abreu RF to Mets 3B Baty straight up
Not even close. Baty hasn’t sniffed the success Abreu has had.
Don’t think even Boston is that stupid
Baty can play third and until Mayer plays a full season, you can’t count on him to do it. That’s said, it would take a lot more than Baty to get any of the Sox outfielders that might be moved.
Campbell OF for Baty
Marte remains the best fit for Boston. He’s got the glove, bat, & contract to create that best fit.
Well, then he’s not available. It’ll take both Early and Tolle to get the D’backs to listen.
Hazen knows what he’s doing – unavailable is a tactic (and a good one). Duran & Early – done deal.
Don’t forget the bidding.
Hopefully it gets done, Astros. Have a good night.
Sox fans wanting to make a move for Marte is weird to me. He’s a good hitter but he’d be their third infielder over the age of 32 and it seems like Arizona wants a haul. they should try to find someone younger who fits the timeline better
Hazen is a crack smoker early and duran lmfao dont do drugs
I think the issue is there are a limited number of impact bats left. Marte would be one of the better hitters available, but I agree going younger would be better if they can find someone.
Crack
I think they’d do Duran, Tolle, and a low level infielder. It’s a ton, but it would also make the Sox a juggernaut on both sides of the ball.
Moncada makes sense on a short deal. Can play passable 2nd and 3rd while not blocking the progress of Mayer, Campbell, etc. Full circle.
Baty in a trade?
Boston will always sell out. No need to go bust chasing after big name players. They have a nice historical park. Hey, a summer in park drinking beer and hooting, is what baseball is all about anyways. The really old stadiums have an allure that the modern ones will never have.
Ohh yeah Paredes makes so much sense actually. I wonder if Duran/Abreu would be going to the Astros.
No. Paredes is worth less
Parades is the obvious answer but Early is tough to let go of. Gray is a rental and pitching is so fragile. I’d hang on to Tolle and Early. It’s unfortunate that they won’t spend their way out of this predicament.
I would love an Early for Paredes swap as an Astros fan.
I’m sure, gumdrop trees for everybody too…lol no
Boston is not acquiring a left handed bat. Just stop with the foolish proposals.
Pablo Sandoval
Just going to throw a name out there…Caleb Durbin from the Brewers.
Nobody is going to trade a ROY finalist.
Abreu for Paredes?
Red Sox say no.
I don’t see Boston and St. Louis hooking up for a third time. The two previous trades made perfect sense for both teams; win-win situations for both – Boston got 2 veterans and money to offset their contracts and St. Louis received young, controllable pitching.in return.
While I think Boston has had a wonderful offseason, they don’t need Brendan Donovan.
And here I was expecting to hear, Mazurek Dąbrowskiego.
What about bringing back Xander to play either Short or Third. Can send Sandoval, Whitlock and Casas. Maybe Padres can add Estrada to a deal.
I love Xander but he isn’t even worth Sandoval let alone Casas and Whitlock with or without Estrada in the deal.
Xander is not the player he once was and his salary is not worth giving up anyone for him unless it was a salary dump like Yoshida.
Xander back to Boston. Padres want Casas and could add Sandoval 12,5M. Whitlock 7.25M and Hicks 12M. Boston could ask for some relievers like Estrada and Jacob, Rodriguez or Morgan who are on minimum salaries
Nobody wants Xander and especially his wild whacky insane contract under any circumstances. Free even, with the hideous contract is a horrendous idea. SD blinded by the light of a fading ok star.
Whitlock isn’t going anywhere he’s the closer when Chapman leaves….
Redsox should triple down on the front of the rotation with either Peralta or Skubal IMO and have a Crochet extension agreed to. They can easily get either with Arms like Bello, Tolle, Harrison, or Sandoval, infielders like Sogard, Eaton, Hamilton, Campbell, and Yoshida, Duran or Abreu. GO GET A CO-ACE and later a Suarez, Hoerner type RHB. Or stick with Romy, and one of Hamilton, Sogard or Eaton. But get the CO-ACE NOW while you can.
I don’t think either of them are going to sign an extension unless they are overpaid. They both want to test their value in free agency.
Move Raffy to 2nd to clear up some of the outfield jam. Play Marcelo Mayer at 3rd….Have Yoshida coming off the bench…put Duran LF Roman Anthony in CF and Abreu in RF….Casas when healthy is the Everyday DH….KC might platoon with Abreu now that Refsnyder left. It’s missing a huge power threat but maybe Roman Anthony develops more into that and gives 30 homers.
Abreu needs a platoon, his splits were horrible that would give Campbell play and Campbell could also back up Raffy at 2nd occasionally. I don’t think a trade is needed immediately they’d be fine this year if they don’t. Campbell hasn’t proven to be an everyday player yet, he will after this year though.
Go trade for Skubal or Peralta and snag Suarez, Hoerner or Perades, stay away from donovan and lefties.
Redsox Trade for De La Cruz (Reds) for Duran, Bello, Romero, Yosida & cash, & Tolle
Why would the Reds want to trade one of if not the best position players on their team who is only 24? He is not going anywhere. They also don’t have a need for pitching and are potentially going to trade from the pitchers they have, so this proposal doesn’t make any sense.
Campbell needs to prove he is ready to go back to the majors before he is considered an option.
“Perfect as that fit might seem on paper” is NOT proper English. You can’t just leave “as” out at the beginning of the sentence—it’s not optional. If you’re a professional writer, you can’t just pick and choose when to use correct grammar.
And there shouldn’t be a comma before “either” when it ends a sentence or clause.
