Tigers Prioritizing Victor Martinez
The Tigers are making free agent catcher Victor Martinez their top priority among all free agent hitters, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. If Martinez signs in Detroit, he'd likely share the catching duties with Alex Avila, spell Miguel Cabrera at first and start occasionally at DH. The Red Sox expected the Tigers to pursue Martinez and are eyeing John Buck in case V-Mart signs elsewhere.
The Orioles, Rockies and Rangers are among the teams with potential interest in Martinez. He batted .302/.351/.493 with 20 homers in 2010 and has already heard from six interested teams even though his Type A status likely means he'll cost a top draft pick. Earlier today, Morosi suggested that it's in Martinez's best interest to sign sooner rather than later.
Red Sox Eyeing John Buck
The Red Sox have had extensive internal discussions about John Buck and are expected to pursue him aggressively in case Victor Martinez signs elsewhere, according to Gordon Edes of ESPNBoston.com. Boston’s front office expects the Tigers to make a “major push” for Martinez.
The Red Sox have Jarrod Saltalamacchia, but will likely add a second catcher since Martinez and Jason Varitek are free agents. Buck, who would not cost a pick to sign, batted .281/.314/.489 with 20 homers for the Blue Jays last year after the Royals non-tendered him. The 30-year-old threw out 28% of would be base stealers and made the All-Star team for the first time in his career.
The Blue Jays will have Jose Molina and J.P. Arencibia in uniform next year, but they haven't ruled out bringing back Buck or Miguel Olivo (who became Blue Jays property in a surprising trade last week). Toronto will obtain a supplementary first round pick if Buck declines arbitration to sign elsewhere.
Odds & Ends: Renteria, Huff, Takahashi
Four years ago today, the Padres traded Josh Barfield to the Indians for Andrew Brown and Kevin Kouzmanoff. Only Kouzmanoff panned out to any extent; he was sent to the A's with Eric Sogard in January for Aaron Cunningham and Scott Hairston. Tigers Sign Jhonny Peralta
The Tigers officially signed Jhonny Peralta to a two-year, $11.25MM contract today. MLB.com's Jason Beck reports that the contract will include a third-year option worth $6MM with a $500K buyout. ESPNDeportes' Enrique Rojas first reported that the two sides were close to finalizing a deal, while Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports and the AP also contributed.
Although the Tigers turned down Peralta's $7.25MM option less than a week ago, the team was always optimistic about bringing Peralta back at a lesser cost. In October, Detroit signed Brandon Inge to a two-year extension worth $11.5MM, so the Tigers have now made nearly identical commitments to both players on the left side of their infield.
As usual, the free agent market for shortstops is weak, so the Tigers had to pay full sticker price on Peralta.
Tigers, Phillies Interested In Eddie Bonine
Having just hit free agency for the first time, Eddie Bonine is drawing interest from the Tigers and Phillies, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. Both clubs would be interested in bringing Bonine on board on a minor league deal, according to Morosi. The right-hander became a free agent earlier this week, after being outrighted by the Tigers.
Bonine, 29, has seen big league playing time in each of the last three seasons in Detroit. He received his most significant action in 2010, appearing in 47 games and posting a 4.63 ERA. The righty doesn't have dominant stuff, recording just 26 strikeouts in 68 innings in 2010, but he has exhibited good control throughout his career (2.7 BB/9).
Tigers, Peralta Close To Completing New Deal
SUNDAY, 5:01pm: Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports confirms that Peralta and the Tigers are on the verge of finalizing a deal worth approximately $11MM. A major league source expects the team to announce the signing within the next week.
SATURDAY, 3:12pm: The Tigers and infielder Jhonny Peralta are close to completing a two-year deal worth $11.25MM, reports Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes. Rojas' source says the two sides are just finishing up some minor details.
Detroit acquired the 28-year-old Peralta from the Indians at this year's trade deadline. He performed admirably with his new team, hitting .253/.314/.396 with eight homers in 242 plate appearances while moving back to shortstop. Rojas says the Tigers intend to use Peralta at short, unsurprising given Brandon Inge's new deal.
The Tigers declined their $7.25MM option on Peralta earlier this week, though both sides expressed a desire to keep the relationship going.

- Heyman spoke to Adrian Gonzalez's agent, who mentioned Joe Mauer, Mark Teixeira, and Ryan Howard are contract comparables (Twitter link). It's pretty clear that they're seeking upwards of $22MM annually.
- Meanwhile, Padres GM Jed Hoyer has spoken to Jerry Hairston Jr.'s agent about bringing the utility player back to San Diego next season according to MLB.com's Corey Brock. Hairston has indicated that he'd like to return to the team.
- Ken Davidoff of Newsday tweets that a competing executive sees the Nationals signing Carlos Pena. The team is emphasizing defense, which Pena excels at, and GM Mike Rizzo has a strong relationship with his agent Scott Boras.
- Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post hears from a source close to the team that the Nats will in fact pursue Brandon Webb this offseason. We heard rumblings about potential mutual interest between the two sides last month.
- Boras indicated that he's received "a lot of early calls" about Magglio Ordonez according to MLB.com's Jason Beck. If the outfielder is going to return to Detroit, it won't happen quickly; he and Boras are going to see what the market has to offer.
Four Tigers To Become Free Agents
Eddie Bonine elected free agency and Jay Sborz, Max St. Pierre and Jeff Frazier will follow him to the open market this Saturday, according to the Tigers (on Twitter). Detroit outrighted the four players to Triple-A to create roster space.
Bonine pitched to a 4.63 ERA in 68 innings for the Tigers this year. The 29-year-old right-hander struck out 3.4 batters per nine and walked 2.9 per nine in his third big league season.
Sborz, 25, appeared in one game for the Tigers this year, but has spent most of his pro career in the minors. The right-hander has a 4.31 ERA and more than one strikeout per frame in 296 2/3 minor league innings pitched.
St. Pierre, a 14-year minor league veteran from Quebec, finally made his big league debut this year. He didn't do much in nine big league plate appearances, but the 30-year-old catcher did post a .274/.353/.479 line in the upper minors this year.
Frazier, 28, also made his big league debut in 2010. The 2004 third rounder batted .256/.306/.493 at Triple A with 25 homers while playing first base and both corner outfield positions.
Red Sox Acquire Brent Dlugach
The Red Sox acquired Brent Dlugach from Detroit for a player to be named later or cash considerations, according to the Tigers (on Twitter). The 27-year-old shortstop batted .258/.303/.360 at Triple-A this year. He had three plate appearances for the Tigers in 2009, but has spent the rest of his seven-year pro career in the minor leagues. Detroit drafted Dlugach in the sixth round of the 2004 draft.
