Teams Interested In Luis Gonzalez

By Tim Dierkes | December 5, 2007 at 6:14pm CDT

Luis Gonzalez has seemingly gotten lost in the free agent shuffle, but he did post a .359 OBP last year.  Gonzo’s agent has actually talked to many teams (per Jerry Crasnick):  the Rangers, Twins, Giants, Rays, and White Sox.

My guess a month ago was the Twins.

Odds and Ends: Guillen, Crede, Hamilton, Boone

By Tim Dierkes | December 5, 2007 at 2:06pm CDT

Rounding up some of the day’s random rumors and tidbits…

  • Jose Guillen might get a light suspension for his exploits.
  • There was a report that the Brewers were close to obtaining Joe Crede, but it was published last night.
  • The BBWAA approved a new resolution for 2013.  Any player with a contract provision linked to a major award of theirs will not be considered for that award.  Makes sense – to repeat Curt Schilling’s situation.  Curt Schilling could get a million bucks by netting one Cy Young vote in 2008.  The BBWAA would rather preserve its right to have members make off-the-wall votes on occasion without bribery being accused.
  • The Reds traded Buck Coats to the Jays.  They also released Jorge Cantu.  They now have an open spot on the 40-man roster.
  • Could the Rays re-acquire Josh Hamilton?  There’s speculation on the topic in Nashville.
  • Buster Olney says Aaron Boone interests the Giants, Nationals, and Brewers.

Angels, White Sox, Rockies, A’s Interested In Burke

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2007 at 9:46pm CDT

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 9:45pm: A White Sox source told MLB.com’s Alyson Footer not to look too much into their supposed interest in Burke.

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 9:25pm: The Rockies have made a trade offer for Burke, according to the Denver Post.

FROM 12-4-07 at 8:07pm:

Just talked to a source close to Chris Burke.  So far four teams have contacted Burke’s agent: the White Sox, Rockies, A’s, and Angels.

The 2001 first rounder is almost certain to be traded by the Astros; he just wants an opportunity to start somewhere.  The Angels’ could have an opening if they trade Howie Kendrick.

White Sox Not Interested In Andruw

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2007 at 8:01pm CDT

At about 4:30 today, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said "he’s in the mix, I guess" in reference to Andruw Jones.  According to Sox GM Kenny Williams, Ozzie guessed wrong.  Williams says Jones is not on his list, as he desires patient hitters.

Williams’ statement about patience might indicate the Sox are in on Jason Bay and Kosuke Fukudome, as has been rumored.  Others who exhibit patience or deep counts who might be available: Nick Swisher, Austin Kearns, Reggie Willits, Johnny Damon, Brian Roberts, Jamey Carroll, Milton Bradley, and Mike Cameron.

Tigers Getting Cabrera, White Sox After Andruw?

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2007 at 5:23pm CDT

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 5:22pm: Joe Frisaro at MLB.com says Cabrera and Willis are on the verge of becoming Tigers.  And to think some people called the Winter Meetings boring.  The Marlins got some absolute studs here, though it’s surprising they couldn’t get more dealing the two separately.

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 5:15pm: Ozzie Guillen confirms Chicago’s interest in Andruw, despite his agent.

UPDATE, 12-4-07 at 5:04pm: This is out of control!  Now Jim Molony is saying the Tigers are nearing a blockbuster eight-player deal to get Cabrera and Willis for Maybin, Miller, and four others.  In the same breath Molony adds that the White Sox are after Andruw Jones.

FROM 12-4-07 at 5:01pm:

This is unexpected.  Joe Capozzi says the White Sox "are making a strong push" to acquire Miguel Cabrera.  What’s more, some kind of major announcement is coming soon and White Sox sources admitted it involves Cabrera.

Josh Fields, Gio Gonzalez, John Danks, and Gavin Floyd could all be involved.  This would be an incredible move if Kenny Williams can pull it off.  I never though those guys could net Cabrera against all other offers.

Capozzi adds that that the Tigers also made a push for Cabrera this afternoon.

O’Brien’s Latest: Vizcaino, Wang

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2007 at 3:54pm CDT

Newsday’s Kat O’Brien checks in with a couple of new Yankees tidbits not related to Johan.

  • O’Brien spoke to the man himself, Bean Stringfellow. Bean says Luis Vizcaino is looking for Linebrink money.  So, the fact that he "likes New York" isn’t going to matter much.  The Yanks may pass, but the Viz is talking to the Mets, White Sox, Royals, and Dodgers.  If the Viz returned to the White Sox at 4/19…that would be just wrong.
  • Chien-Ming Wang’s agent, Alan Nero, wanted to talk to the Yankees about a long-term deal for him.  The discussion ended when the Yankees requested that Nero make the first move.
  • That reminds me of when Homer Simpson went to Mr. Burns’ mansion in possession of Burns’ childhood teddy bear, repeating to himself that he will reject Burns’ first offer no matter what.  Burns: May I offer you a drink?  Homer: Sorry Burns, no deal. [takes the bear and leaves].

Brewers Considering Crede, Blalock, Feliz, LaRoche, Tejada

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2007 at 3:44pm CDT

What, you thought the Brewers were dead set on Scott Rolen?  Not so, according to Tom Haudricourt.  They’re considering the following options at third base, mostly because the left field options are worse.

  • Joe Crede – I can see this one happening, Doug Melvin and Kenny Williams get along.  And Kenny really has nowhere to play Crede.
  • Hank Blalock – Trading Blalock now is generally seen as selling low, so this seems unlikely.
  • Pedro Feliz – I’m going to disagree with Haudricourt that Feliz is intriguing.
  • Andy LaRoche – Now this one is intriguing, hitting the Dodgers up for LaRoche.  I imagine Colletti may want to include LaRoche in other, bigger deals though.
  • Miguel Tejada – He’s been discussed, but all the well-known warts make this unlikely.

Burke To White Sox For Reliever?

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2007 at 8:17am CDT

According to ESPN’s Steve Phillips, the Astros could trade second baseman Chris Burke to the White Sox for an unknown reliever.  Nick Masset and David Aardsma are both out of options, so one of them may be Ed Wade’s target.

The White Sox are apparently looking to build up second base depth.  Right now the internal candidates are Juan Uribe and Danny Richar.

Odds and Ends: Tavarez, Lieber, Stewart

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2007 at 12:47am CDT

Another collection…

  • A few notes from Brian Cashman…the Yanks have talked to Luis Vizcaino’s agent about bringing him back.  Also, they’ve yet to inquire on any free agent center fielders.
  • Miguel Cabrera has been talking to Ozzie Guillen daily since the season ended.  The article makes Cabrera sound like a big kid.
  • The Red Sox have had a couple of inquiries on Julian Tavarez.
  • Five or six teams have inquired on Shannon Stewart, who wants a two-year pact apparently.
  • The Phillies, contrary to previous reports, are not interested in re-signing Jon Lieber.
  • On a scale of 1 to 10, the chances of the Astros trading for a Miguel Tejada were rated a 2.  The ’Stros don’t want to give up the farm.  That’s also why Joe Nathan is unlikely for Houston.
  • Scott Boras recently called Ed Wade to sell him on Eric Gagne, Jeff Weaver, and Rodrigo Lopez.  Wade seemed unimpressed.
  • Nothing much new on the Padres front – still interested in Kosuke Fukudome, Geoff Jenkins, Jim Edmonds, Darin Erstad, and Mark Prior.
  • Brian Cashman’s phone has been ringing off the hook about Melky Cabrera.

White Sox Make Third Base Decision

By Tim Dierkes | December 3, 2007 at 10:09pm CDT

MLB.com’s Scott Merkin reports that Kenny Williams has made a decision about his third base logjam.  Williams wouldn’t say who’s on the way out – Josh Fields or Joe Crede.  It stands to reason it’s Crede though.  Perhaps Williams’ decision is to trade Crede, no matter what.  I can’t see why it would ever get to the point of non-tendering him.

Though the team’s assistant GM recently spoke to Scott Boras about Crede, they discussed his back rehab and had no extension talks.  The Phillies and Brewers both make sense for Crede.
