Rockies Lock Up Ubaldo Jimenez

By Tim Dierkes | January 28, 2009 at 5:27pm CDT

WEDNESDAY, 5:27pm: Renck adds more specifics. If Jimenez is dealt before the contract’s final year, he can void the 2014 club option that could cover his first year of free agency.

TUESDAY, 3:04pm: Contract details from Renck: "It’s a four-year, $10-million deal with two club options, that if exercised, would bring value of contract to $22.75 million."  The club options were crucial for the Rockies, said Dan O’Dowd.

12:06pm: The Rocky Mountain News says the deal locks up Jimenez through 2012 and has club options for 2013 (his final arb year) and 2014 (his first free agent year).  Renck says Matt Cain’s deal may be a comparable.

11:38am: Renck says the Rockies signed Jimenez to a four-year contract.  I believe that will leave Jimenez unsigned for one arb year (2013) before he’s eligible for free agency.

TUESDAY, 8:33am: According to Troy Renck and Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post, the Rockies hope to sign starter Ubaldo Jimenez to an extension.  Jimenez is open to the idea.

The 25 year-old with the blazing fastball had a fine 2008, posting a 3.99 ERA in 34 starts.  His control needs work, but his 54.4% groundball rate meshed nicely with Coors Field.  Jimenez won’t be arbitration-eligible until after the 2010 season.

The young pitchers recently signed to extensions aren’t good comps for Jimenez – Cole Hamels is a Super Two and one of the game’s best, while Zack Greinke is an odd case having earned $1.4MM in his first arb year.  If Paul Maholm signs an extension, that might be a good match (despite the difference in service time).

Rockies Rumors: Beimel, Fogg, Benson

By Tim Dierkes | January 28, 2009 at 8:59am CDT

The latest on the Rockies from Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post…

  • It seemed the Rockies had satisfied their need for lefthanded relievers by signing Alan Embree and Glendon Rusch.  However, Renck says they may renew interest in Joe Beimel if the price is right.  I’m not sure what Beimel is asking for, but two years and $5MM seems appropriate (in hindsight, the Yankees may have overpaid for Damaso Marte at three years, $12MM).
  • Josh Fogg still has an "open invitation" to sign a minor league deal to return to Colorado.  Fogg signed with the Reds on February 21st last year; you have to imagine he’d like to resolve his situation more quickly and have a normal Spring Training.
  • The Rockies aren’t interested in Kris Benson, though they did attend his Saturday workout.

Benson Works Out In Front Of Nine Teams

By Ben Jones | January 26, 2009 at 8:58pm CDT

Free agent right-hander Kris Benson worked out Saturday for nine teams and demonstrated that he should be ready to compete for a job in Spring Training, MLB.com reports.

Agent Gregg Clifton said the throwing session “went well, and he showed teams that he’s ahead of schedule in getting ready for the ’09 season.”

The article only lists the Rockies as being there, though it does note that nine teams were in attendance. This post lists the Dodgers, Rangers, Padres, Diamondbacks, Indians and Cardinals as teams that planned to attend.

Benson, 34, missed the 2007 season because of surgery on his right shoulder. He spent last season in the minors with the Phillies. He is 68-73 with a 4.34 ERA in 195 career starts.

Rockies Update On Fogg, Atkins

By Ben Jones | January 26, 2009 at 6:28pm CDT

The Colorado Rockies offered third baseman Garrett Atkins $6.65MM, and Atkins asked for $7.95MM, Troy Renck of the Denver Post reports.

“Either way, it’s going to be a lot of money and I will be happy,” Atkins told Renck.

Atkins’ arbitration hearing date has been set, Renck adds, but both parties are keeping it secret to prevent advance research by the arbiters.

Renck also notes that starting pitcher Josh Fogg is still considering rejoining the Rockies. Fogg would receive a minor-league deal similar to Matt Belisle.

Fogg Mulling Rockies Offer

By Tim Dierkes | January 22, 2009 at 8:49am CDT

According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, free agent starter Josh Fogg has an invitation to rejoin the Rockies on a deal similar to Matt Belisle’s minor league pact.  Fogg would face significant competition for a job with the big league club, so he’s waiting to see if anything better surfaces.  Renck notes that Belisle has an April out clause, which is not something the Rockies hand out lightly.

Renck adds that the Rox will watch Kris Benson throw Saturday but are unlikely to sign him.  Ken Rosenthal said yesterday the Dodgers, Rangers, Padres, and D’Backs will also be in attendance.  The Indians and Cardinals too, says Thomas Harding.

Rosenthal On Sheets, Cruz, Cabrera, Reyes

By Tim Dierkes | January 21, 2009 at 8:35am CDT

The latest from Ken Rosenthal…

  • Rosenthal recommends the Yankees sign Ben Sheets and Juan Cruz, partially because they’d pay less of a cost in draft picks than any other team.  One exec predicted Sheets would require a $6-8MM base with the potential to earn at least $14MM, and possibly a "lucrative club option."  Despite Rosenthal’s recommendation, the Yanks remain focused on Andy Pettitte (who is not weighing an offer from the Astros).
  • Industry sources tell Rosenthal that the Red Sox have kept their payroll flexible in case mid and low-revenue teams need to dump contracts.
  • The A’s probably cannot afford both Nick Johnson and Orlando Cabrera, so they’ll wait to see what happens with Cabrera before pursuing the trade with Washington.
  • Prince Fielder filed for $8MM against the Brewers’ $6MM; Rosenthal indicates the team feared he’d file higher.
  • One chatter mentioned yesterday that Cory Sullivan and Jeremy Reed are the exact same player; one GM said the same to Rosenthal.
  • Dennys Reyes has backed off his demand for Jeremy Affeldt money (two years, $8MM).  Affeldt seemed like a bargain at the time.
  • Expected to be in attendance at Kris Benson’s upcoming throwing session: the Dodgers, Rangers, Padres, Rockies, and D’Backs.  Looks like an NL West affair.

According to Troy Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies avoided arbitration with Taylor Buchholz ($1.055MM plus $40K in incentives), Jason Grilli ($800K), and Clint Barmes ($1.625MM).  The case of Garrett Atkins remains unresolved.

Atkins Extension Appears Unlikely

By | January 19, 2009 at 6:37pm CDT

Thomas Harding of MLB.com notes that arbitration-eligible third baseman Garrett Atkins might have to settle for a one-year deal this offseason.

The Rockies and Atkins’ representatives were thought to be working on a multi-year extension, but those talks have apparently fallen flat.  Atkins settled for $4.3875MM last year around this time to avoid an arbitration hearing.
