Outrighted: Phillies, Angels

By Connor Byrne | August 15, 2020 at 12:36am CDT

Let’s check in on a few of the latest outrights…

  • Phillies hurlers Enyel De Los Santos and Trevor Kelley cleared waivers and were outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com tweets. The Phillies designated both right-handers for assignment in recent days. De Los Santos joined the Phillies in a one-for-one swap with the Padres for infielder Freddy Galvis before 2018. While De Los Santos then had a strong first season in the Phillies’ system, his stock fell last year in a rough showing divided between Triple-A and the majors. Kelley, whom the Phillies claimed off waivers from the Red Sox last winter, allowed four earned runs on eight hits in 3 1/3 innings this year before Philly designated him.
  • The Angels outrighted Jose Rodriguez to their alternate site after he cleared waivers. Rodriguez has thrown 21 1/3 innings of 2.53 ERA ball as an Angel since 2019, but he has allowed five home runs, struck out just 13 hitters while walking 12, and logged a 6.72 FIP/6.27 xFIP.

Angels Designate Jose Rodriguez

By Jeff Todd | August 10, 2020 at 6:07pm CDT

The Angels have designated righty Jose Rodriguez for assignment, per a club announcement. His 40-man spot was needed for southpaw Jose Suarez, who was reinstated from the injured list and optioned to the team’s alternate training site.

Soon to turn 25, Rodriguez first reached the majors in 2019 as a swingman for the Halos. He has only allowed six earned runs in 21 1/3 MLB innings, but he has managed only a 13:12 K/BB ratio and has also coughed up five long balls. The Angels obviously don’t expect that high-wire act to continue succeeding.

If and when he earns his way back to the bigs, the 22-year-old Suarez will hope to improve upon a challenging debut season. He was tagged for 23 long balls and limped to a 7.11 ERA in 81 frames last year. The Los Angeles organization will certainly remain patient given Suarez’s history of high strikeout rates as a minor-league starter.

Angels Select Jose Rodriguez, Option Kyle Keller

By TC Zencka | August 1, 2020 at 5:28pm CDT

The Los Angeles Angels announced a pair of roster moves after last night’s ballgame. Right-hander Kyle Keller has been optioned to their alternative training site. In his place, righty Jose Rodriguez has been selected to join the major-league roster.

Keller, 27, made two appearances this season, allowing 2 earned runs in 2 1/3 innings. He was acquired this past offseason from the Miami Marlins for Jose Estrada. Keller made his major-league debut with ten appearances last season. He has consistently put up more than 10 strikeouts per nine innings in the minor leagues since being selected in the 18th round of the 2015 draft. He’ll likely find his way back to the major-league roster at some point this season.

Rodriguez, 24, made 9 appearances for the Angels last season as a long man out of the pen (1 start), putting up a 2.75 ERA across 19 2/3 innings. Rodriguez has primarily been a starter in the minors, though it’s been a less-than-stellar last couple of seasons in the upper levels of the Angels’ system. He posted a 6.57 ERA across Double-A and Triple-A in 2019.

Minor MLB Transactions: 12/9/19

By Connor Byrne | December 9, 2019 at 11:58pm CDT

The Kia Tigers of the Korea Baseball Organization have inked right-hander Drew Gagnon to a $650K contract with a $200K signing bonus, Dan Kurtz of MyKBO.net reports. The Tigers also re-signed outfielder Preston Tucker on a $550K salary with a $300K bonus. The Mets released the 29-year-old Gagnon in late November, which came after a couple brief but rough seasons in New York. Gagnon pitched to a 7.32 ERA across a combined 35 2/3 innings as a Met, but he did have a productive 2019 at the Triple-A level. Tucker, also 29, didn’t hit much in major league stints with the Astros, Braves or Reds, though he performed well after leaving the White Sox’s Triple-A affiliate last May to head to Korea. In his first year as a Tiger, Tucker batted .311/.381/.479 with nine home runs in 399 plate appearances.

Now for the latest minor moves from the bigs…

  • The Angels announced that right-hander Jose Rodriguez cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Salt Lake. The move leaves the Angels with one open spot on their 40-man roster. The 24-year-old Rodriguez made his major league debut in 2019, and though he managed a 2.75 ERA during that 19 2/3-inning span, he also totaled almost as many walks (11) as strikeouts (13). Furthermore, Rodriguez had difficulty across 44 1/3 frames at the Triple-A level, where he stumbled to a 6.29 ERA with 9.14 K/9 and 4.47 BB/9.
  • In another Angels transaction, the club signed lefty Hoby Milner to a minor league contract, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com tweets. While Milner spent the previous two seasons with the Rays, the ex-Phillie didn’t log much major league time in either campaign. But the 28-year-old amassed plenty of impressive innings last season as a member of Triple-A Durham, with which he worked to a 3.06 ERA and recorded 12.99 K/9 against 1.9 BB/9 over 61 2/3 frames.
  • The Marlins have picked up infielder Gosuke Katoh on a minors deal, Wells Dusenbury of the Sun Sentinel writes. His agreement comes with an invitation to big league spring training. Notably, there are now members of the Miami front office who were in New York’s FO when the Yankees picked Katoh in the second round of the 2013 draft. Evidenced in part by his high selection (No. 66), Katoh was once a highly promising prospect. While Katoh hasn’t made it to the majors since then, the 25-year-old did have a nice season in 2019. In his first action at the Triple-A level, Katoh slashed .279/.382/.443 with 11 homers and eight steals in 308 PA.
  • The Mets have signed catcher David Rodriguez to a minors pact with an invitation to MLB camp, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. Rodriguez, 23, spent his first seven professional seasons in the Rays’ system, making it to the Double-A level in each of the past two years. He hit .225/.303/.366 with seven homers over 295 PA in 2019.

Cam Bedrosian To Injured List With Forearm Strain

By Dylan A. Chase | August 31, 2019 at 7:26pm CDT

The Angels have announced that reliever Cam Bedrosian has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm strain. Bedrosian’s IL placement will be retroactive to Aug. 29. Righty Jose Rodriguez has been called up from Triple-A Salt Lake in a concurrent move.

This is certainly concerning news for Angels brass considering Bedrosian’s intimate relationship with injury–the 27-year-old pitcher had Tommy John surgery while in the minor leagues and saw his 2016 season end early with surgery to repair a blood clot in his arm.

Fortunately, Bedrosian indicated to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register that this forearm strain does not feel similar to the one he experienced prior to his TJ surgery; Bedrosian also told Fletcher that he only expects to be shut down for about a week (link).

2019 had been a solid effort to date for the son of former big leaguer Steve Bedrosian. Across 61.1 innings, the righty has managed a 3.23 ERA supported by a healthy 9.39 K/9 mark and 3.23 BB/9 mark. Those numbers aren’t far off the career numbers he’s compiled over 263.0 frames since debuting in 2014 (3.76 ERA, 9.55 K/9, and 3.76 BB/9 career marks). Bedrosian is making $1.75MM this year in his second turn through arbitration.

Rodriguez, a 23-year-old rookie from Venezuela, will be making his third trip on the Anaheim taxi squad. In 5.2 Angel innings this year, Rodriguez has logged a 4.76 ERA–which actually represents far better results than he’s managed in Triple-A. In 61.2 PCL innings split between the bullpen and rotation, the righty has been tattooed to the tune of a 6.57 ERA and 5.38 FIP.

Angels Select Jose Rodriguez

By Ty Bradley | July 27, 2019 at 4:35pm CDT

The Angels have selected the contract of righty Jose Rodriguez among a series of roster moves, the team reports.

Rodriguez, 23, had posted strikeout rates of 10 or better at both Double and Triple-A this season. He isn’t one of the team’s most well-regarded prospects, with FanGraphs profiling the righty as an “up-and-down” arm, though he seems a mere temporary fill-in for Noe Ramirez, who was placed on the 10-Day IL with a viral infection.

The back-end of the Angels’ pen, anchored by an ascendant Ty Buttrey and resurgent Hansel Robles, has been mostly effective this season, though there’s certainly room for improvement at the front end. The club sits just 4.5 games back in a top-heavy AL Wild Card race, so a systematic patching-up of any and all holes will be at the fore of the club’s deadline plans.
