Gammons Rumors: Sabathia, Manny, Furcal, Bradley

By Tim Dierkes | November 18, 2008 at 10:16am CDT

Here’s how ESPN’s Peter Gammons sees some of the bigger free agent dominoes falling, assuming the Dodgers land Sabathia:

Interesting how many GMs think that if the Dodgers get C.C. Sabathia, the Giants will get big into Manny Ramirez, and Billy Beane and the A’s will continue to move fast on Rafael Furcal. Also, expect Toronto to make good on its promise to Milton Bradley that he is the Blue Jays’ priority.

Would Beane and Brian Sabean really be influenced by Sabathia landing in L.A.?  We may never know, as the Yankees have come out of the free agent gate with their guns blazing.  I can see Beane getting Furcal regardless, even with Bobby Crosby under contract for ’09.

I guessed Bradley would land in Toronto, but only because I like the fit.  This is the first I’ve heard of them making him a priority over Jason Giambi or Manny.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Griffey, Peavy, Dempster

By Tim Dierkes | November 18, 2008 at 9:22am CDT

A look at the latest column from FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal:

  • Rosenthal wonders if Jason Varitek’s viral sickness and divorce last year contributed to his poor performance at the plate.
  • Ken Griffey Jr.’s wife gave him her blessing to play anywhere he’d like.  If he’s focused on getting a ring, Seattle might not make sense.  Griffey’s doctor believes his knee will be in better shape in 2009.
  • Padres GM Kevin Towers wonders if Jake Peavy would’ve accepted a trade to the Braves, given Atlanta’s club policy against no-trade clauses.  Towers isn’t talking to the Braves, Dodgers, or Yankees about Peavy, and Rosenthal says he’s "not making much headway" with the Cubs.  ESPN’s Peter Gammons says the Cubs’ loss of Jose Ceda lessens their chances, while Frank Wren still believes Peavy will end up a Brave.
  • The Cubs hope to resolve the Ryan Dempster situation this week.  The team wants to do a four-year deal.
  • The Giants are still in on Juan Cruz after their Jeremy Affeldt signing.
  • The Phillies gave Pat Burrell "parameters" for a new deal, while Rosenthal speculates on the Giants and Dodgers as other possible fits.

Dodgers Withdraw Manny Offer

By Tim Dierkes | November 14, 2008 at 7:31pm CDT

7:31pm: Jesse Spector of the New York Daily News chatted with Colletti about Manny and much more.

5:04pm: According to MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick, the Dodgers withdrew their two-year, $45MM offer to Manny Ramirez.  Ned Colletti plans to continue negotiations.  Do you think Ramirez will ultimately get four or more guaranteed years?

Do Angels Have Genuine Interest In Manny?

By Tim Dierkes | November 14, 2008 at 9:47am CDT

Angels owner Arte Moreno had kind words for Manny Ramirez in a recent radio appearance, sparking talk that he could jump in and swipe the slugger from the Dodgers.  However, the general sense is that Moreno just wanted to get people talking about the Angels and perhaps hopes to drive up Ramirez’s price for the Dodgers.

Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times gets a peek at Scott Boras’ binder for Ramirez, which predicts 204 home runs and 684 RBIs over the next six years.  Shaikin quotes Angels GM Tony Reagins saying his priority is elsewhere and the Manny discussion hasn’t taken place, so right now the Dodgers don’t face serious competition.

Shaikin also notes that the Dodgers are more likely to sign Orlando Cabrera to a short-term deal than re-sign Rafael Furcal.

Dodgers Interested In Randy Johnson

By Tim Dierkes | November 14, 2008 at 9:19am CDT

We learned yesterday that the Diamondbacks offered Randy Johnson around $2-3MM, while he would’ve settled for $8MM.  Now he’s on the open market, and could be a bargain on a one-year deal.  The Angels are not interested, but MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick says Johnson is high on the Dodgers’ list.  This would be a fine way for Ned Colletti to kick off his offseason.

Dodgers Not Trading Martin

By Tim Dierkes | November 12, 2008 at 9:49pm CDT

MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick asked Dodgers GM Ned Colletti about the vague Russell Martin trade speculation that’s been making the rounds.  His reply:  "We aren’t trading Martin.  I’ve never brought that up to anybody."  It never made sense – the Dodgers already have too many question marks to be creating another one at catcher.

Details On Manny Offer

By Tim Dierkes | November 12, 2008 at 8:52pm CDT

8:52pm: Scott Boras slipped in a dig at the Dodgers’ offer, stating that he will begin taking "serious" offers for Ramirez on Friday.

10:27am: Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times has the details on the Dodgers’ initial offer to Manny Ramirez, which expires tomorrow.  Ramirez would earn $15MM in ’09, $22.5MM in ’10, and have a $22.5MM option for ’11 with a $7.5MM buyout.  $45MM guaranteed over two years isn’t going to cut it, of course.

Hernandez says the Dodgers will stay involved after Ramirez hits the open market, and may be willing to guarantee a third year.  Just a guess, but I think it’ll take four years.  It doesn’t sound like Ned Colletti will necessarily acquire another outfielder if he fails to sign Ramirez.

Heyman’s Latest: Manny, Martin, Jenks

By Tim Dierkes | November 11, 2008 at 11:50am CDT

SI.com’s Jon Heyman has some hot stove musings today.

  • Heyman talked to one GM who asked (in reference to C.C. Sabathia), "When does anyone ever leave a dollar on the table, much less twenty or thirty million dollars?"  I have heard this sentiment often but I do remember certain players leaving money on the table (often to play in California).  Randy Wolf took less in ’06 to sign with the Dodgers, and Brian Giles did the same for the Padres in ’05.  Kerry Wood turned down a multiyear offer from Boston last year.  And how about Andre Dawson and the blank check in ’87?  Evan Longoria left a ton of money on the table too, but let’s stick to free agents.  Any other examples?
  • Heyman still likes the Orioles as one of Manny Ramirez’s suitors.
  • Heyman describes the evidence as "fairly thin" that the Dodgers are looking to trade Russell Martin.
  • White Sox GM Ken Williams is listening on Bobby Jenks, and the Mets are in on him.  Javier Vazquez and Paul Konerko may also be available, though Konerko has full no-trade rights.

Jake Peavy Rumors: Monday

By Tim Dierkes | November 10, 2008 at 9:31am CDT

Summing up this weekend’s Jake Peavy information…

  • David O’Brien noted that the friendship between Padres GM Kevin Towers and Peavy’s agent Barry Axelrod has raised some eyebrows.  O’Brien also learned that Peavy’s concern over Yunel Escobar being in the deal was overblown – it’s more a general concern that the pitcher joins a strong team.
  • On Saturday, Ken Rosenthal had the Braves and Cubs as frontrunners with the Yankees and Dodgers on the backburner.  He said the Padres discussed keeping Peavy if offers do not suffice.  The Braves were said to be growing impatient.
  • Astros owner Drayton McLane indicated the Padres’ demands for Peavy were too high for his club – "multiple players and some of our best players."
  • Chris De Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times had it as a race between the Cubs and Braves, with the Dodgers a long shot.  De Luca said no other teams will be considered at this point.  A Cubs deal would apparently include Sean Marshall, and possibly Kevin Hart and Mike Fontenot.  Jeff Samardzija is not in the mix.
  • Dave O’Brien says the Braves’ offer looks something like this: Escobar, Gorkys Hernandez or Jordan Schafer, and one or two pitching prospects (possibly Charlie Morton or Jo-Jo Reyes among them).  Tommy Hanson is not in the mix.  O’Brien agrees that it’s between the Braves and Cubs, and likes the Braves’ package more.  O’Brien expects a deal before Thanksgiving, which is November 27th.

Peavy Rumors: Saturday

By Sarah Green | November 8, 2008 at 2:18pm CDT

I’m giving up and setting up a post to house Jake Peavy rumors, because I keep coming across different variations. I’ll update the post if I come across more as the afternoon goes on. To recap:

  • Buster Olney expects a deal before Thanksgiving.
  • Ken Rosenthal has heard that the Braves are getting tired of waiting, at that yesterday, the Padres discussed just keeping Peavy for themselves. He mentioned the Braves, Cubs, Dodgers and Yankees as still in the running.
  • Brian McTaggart at the Houston Chronicle has reported that the Astros see themselves as out of the running, because the Padres’ price was so high.

Now for the new stuff:

  • Chris de Luca of the Chicago Sun-Times expects a Peavy deal "within the next week" with the pitcher being sent to the Braves, Cubs, or Dodgers: "Those teams are the finalists and, sources say, no other teams will be considered at this point." Not very surprisingly, the three remaining teams are all in the National League.
  • David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has a long, detailed post on the prospect package the Braves are putting together to try and acquire Peavy. In the long, detailed post he also quotes verbatim a long, detailed email from Peavy’s agent, Barry Axelrod, clarifying his comments about Yunel Escobar.

There will be more to come, no doubt.
