Rosenthal’s Latest: Abreu, Griffey, Varitek

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2008 at 4:54pm CDT

The latest hot stove info from Ken Rosenthal…

  • One executive told Rosenthal Bobby Abreu seeks a three-year, $48MM deal.  He may have a hard time convincing someone he’s worth $16.5MM more than Raul Ibanez.
  • Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik, rather than his bosses, has final say on whether to sign Ken Griffey Jr.
  • If the Mets can move Brian Schneider, they could pursue Jason Varitek.  They might have to give him a multiyear deal (and also surrender their second-round pick to the Red Sox).  The Mets reportedly discussed Schneider with the Red Sox several weeks ago.  Rosenthal says some execs still believe in the Mark Teixeira-Varitek package deal idea though.  It doesn’t really make sense to me.

Odds and Ends: Teixeira, Hunsicker, Burrell

By Tim Dierkes | December 15, 2008 at 2:30pm CDT

Links for Monday…

  • According to the Newberg Report mailing list and CBSSports.com, the Rangers re-signed pitcher Doug Mathis to a minor league deal.
  • Joe Nelson’s been popular since being non-tendered – he’s heard from "at least 12-14 teams."  Ruben Amaro Jr. said today the Phillies inquired on "20 or so" non-tendered players.
  • Adam Everett’s deal with the Tigers is official – $1MM plus incentives.
  • MLB.com’s Barry Bloom spoke to Padres owner John Moores.
  • Richard Justice doesn’t think Drayton McLane would ask Ed Wade to trade Roy Oswalt, but he could see Oswalt requesting a trade.
  • Dave Sheinin says nothing has happened with Mark Teixeira since the Winter Meetings ended, and it’s no coincidence that we haven’t heard much about offers from the Red Sox or Yankees.  Michael Silverman says Boston’s eventual offer to Tex will easily be a record for this ownership group.  He guesses eight years in the $145-175MM range, noting that the Red Sox do not like to have players signed beyond age 36.
  • Buster Olney says the Orioles and Nationals bidding on Tex is "nothing less than lunacy."
  • Gerry Hunsicker has signed an extension to stay with the Rays.
  • RotoAuthority takes a look at Jonathan Sanchez.
  • George King says Kenny Lofton attempted to dissuade C.C. Sabathia from signing with the Yankees.
  • Ken Davidoff says it seems that the Yankees will avoid Scott Boras this offseason.
  • Steve Serby did a Q&A with Omar Minaya, learning details of Minaya’s Winter Meetings dealings.
  • Pat Burrell says he never received a formal offer from the Phillies.  His replacement, Raul Ibanez, will receive three years and $31.5MM.

Four Teams Interested In Wigginton

By Tim Dierkes | December 14, 2008 at 6:09pm CDT

According to La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the Indians, Giants, Pirates, and Reds have expressed interest in new free agent Ty Wigginton.  Dejan Kovacevic confirms Pittsburgh’s interest.  Neal says the Twins have admired Wiggy for years as well.  He adds that Wigginton was nearly dealt to the Giants before being non-tendered.  Ken Davidoff thinks the Mets should look into it.

What will it take to sign Wigginton?  Casey Blake’s three-year, $17.5MM deal might be optimistic, but Neal figures Wigginton could get a similar average annual salary.  Still might take two years to sign Wigginton though.  Beyond Joe Crede, there’s not much else out there for third base.

Japanese Free Agent Round-Up: Kawakami, Takahashi, Saito

By Alex Walsh | December 13, 2008 at 3:36pm CDT

Patrick at NPB Tracker has an interesting update on some notable Japanese free agents.

  • If the Braves are in fact interested in Kenshin Kawakami, they may have to beat an eventual three-year, $21MM offer from the Red Sox.
  • Omar Minaya thinks Koji Uehara projects as a starter, and future negotiations will be based on that projection.
  • The Mets are the frontrunners for signing Ken Takahashi.
  • The Dodgers would’ve been willing to do a $2.5MM deal plus incentives for Takashi Saito, but he did not accept that.

NBP Tracker has the source links, which are in Japanese. Kudos to Patrick for keeping those of us that can’t read Japanese in the know.

Odds and Ends: Sheets, Moeller, Yankees

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 13, 2008 at 11:24am CDT

Links for Saturday…

  • As more teams lock up lefty relievers, Jon Paul Morosi sees the Tigers as more likely to land Joe Beimel.
  • Tom Haudricourt has heard that Ben Sheets is more likely to sign with the Rangers, who have Mike Maddux campaigning for them, than the Yankees.
  • Peter Schmuck hears that the Orioles have signed catcher Chad Moeller to a minor league deal.
  • Ken Davidoff writes that the Yankees shouldn’t concern themselves with Andy Pettitte just yet.
  • Dave Perkins of the Toronto Star doesn’t like the Yankees’ aggressive spending.
  • Jack Curry of the New York Times writes that the Yankees are instant favorites for the World Series.
  • Another New York Times writer, Ben Shpigel, writes that the Mets especially need Oliver Perez now that the Phillies have signed Raul Ibanez.
  • RotoAuthority breaks down the re-vamped San Francisco bullpen for fantasy baseball purposes.
  • Matt Clement’s optimistic about his fresh start with the Jays.
  • Two players re-signed with their clubs after being non-tendered: Norris Hopper of the Reds and Scott Mathieson of the Phils.
  • Hideki Okajima will run a marathon Sunday, and the Red Sox aren’t thrilled.

Crasnick on Lowe

By Alex Walsh | December 13, 2008 at 11:00am CDT

Central Maine Sports Blog had an e-mail conversation with Jerry Crasnick regarding the current status on Derek Lowe.

The Yankees are likely out of the Lowe sweepstakes, says Crasnick, considering the $243 million they’ve already committed to the rotation. By process of elimination, Crasnick names the Mets as frontrunners for Lowe’s services.

Check the link to read more of the e-mail. Kudos to Matthew Boudwell for the update.

Shoeneweis Traded For Connor Robertson

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 12, 2008 at 6:43pm CDT

The Mets acquired 27-year-old righty Connor Robertson from the Diamobdbacks for Scott Schoeneweis and cash considerations. The Mets will pay $1.6MM of the $3.6MM Schoeneweis is owed in 2009, according to ESPN.com.

Robertson has made nine big league appearance with the A’s and D-Backs, including six this year with Arizona. He has an ERA of 2.82 and 24 saves in 305 minor league innings.

Schoeneweis had a 3.34 ERA in 56.2 innings for the Mets in 2008.

Odds and Ends: Kawakami, Max Ramirez, Lowell

By Tim Dierkes | December 12, 2008 at 2:44pm CDT

Links for Friday…

  • Mets owner Fred Wilpon lost some dough.
  • The Red Sox expressed interest in Kenshin Kawakami yesterday. Michael Silverman says Kawakami is expected to choose a team and sign in January (the Orioles are also interested).
  • John Perrotto says the Marlins like Max Ramirez and are willing to trade pitching prospect Ryan Tucker.
  • Bernie Williams will play winter ball in preparation for the World Baseball Classic.
  • Paul Sullivan says Cubs manager Lou Piniella was upset at the thought of losing Mark DeRosa.
  • Rany Jazayerli weighs in on the Royals’ signing of Kyle Farnsworth.  Joe Posnanski talks about Farnsworth and many other topics.
  • Andrew Baggarly says the Giants are not interested in Mike Lowell.
  • Bob Elliott says the Blue Jays had an agreement to pay the Braves to take Everth Cabrera seventh in the Rule 5 draft, but the Padres picked him third.

Rangers Working On Offer For Uehara?

By Tim Dierkes | December 12, 2008 at 9:40am CDT

Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker passes along a Japanese report from Sanspo: the Rangers are preparing a three-year offer for pitcher Koji Uehara worth more than $10MM.  Newman says the Rangers like Uehara as a reliever yet he wants to start.  The Mets have also expressed interest (link in Japanese).

Details On Tigers’ Failed Putz Bid

By Tim Dierkes | December 12, 2008 at 9:20am CDT

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press has the details on the Tigers’ failed bid for J.J. Putz:

One proposal involved the Tigers sending Matt Joyce to Tampa Bay and outfielders Wilkin Ramirez and Casper Wells to Seattle. Putz was the only player the Tigers would have received.

According to Joe Strauss, the Cardinals also pursued Putz (as well as Aaron Heilman).

After the proposal failed, the Tigers shipped Joyce to Tampa Bay for Edwin Jackson. Brian Fuentes may be the Tigers’ best remaining option from a baseball standpoint, but Morosi believes they’d have to move other contracts off the books to afford him.  I’m surprised – they’ll spend less than $10MM in ’09 on their new catcher, shortstop, and starter.
