A’s Not In On Mark Mulder
Tyler Bleszinski of Athletics Nation talked to A's GM Billy Beane on March 10th, and asked if the A's were tempted to sign someone like Mark Mulder or Pedro Martinez. An excerpt of Beane's response:
On Mark, my understanding is that he isn't ready to go out. That's sort of moot. But we've stayed away from signing the veteran starters because we have young guys that we want to be here at some point and I've never thought in our marketplace that that was an efficient use of your money. Short answer is no. It isn't really even something we pursued during the winter. We've got great young pitchers here and we want to give them a chance to get up here.
It's been quiet on the Mulder front lately. He was supposed to audition in mid-March. He told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle in February he wanted to be 100% before holding an open bullpen session.
Geren, A’s Near Extension
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that the Oakland Athletics and manager Bob Geren are nearing a one-year extension with an option for a second year. Assistant General Manager David Forst confirmed, stating that the two sides are "in discussion, close to finalizing something."
Geren, 47, is entering the final year of a three-year contract signed in November 2006. He has a record of 151-172 as the A's skipper.
A’s Release Rob Bowen
According to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle, the A’s released catcher Rob Bowen today. They’ll go with Landon Powell as Kurt Suzuki‘s backup. Bowen had been placed on revocable waivers on Friday.
Bowen, 28, hit .176/.219/.286 in 98 plate appearances last year.

Beimel Close To Choosing An Offer

1:25pm: MLB.com’s Ed Eagle adds the Rockies to the mix of interested teams.
11:15am: According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com Joe Beimel is close to choosing between offers. Oakland and San Diego are apparently in the running for the lefty reliever. The Dodgers were still interested a week ago.
Dennys Reyes, who held lefties to a lower average than Beimel last year, signed a two-year deal worth $3MM with the Cardinals that will likely be comparable to the deal Beimel eventually gets.
Odds And Ends: Pedro, Crosby, Nationals
A few links for Saturday…
- Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reports that Omar Minaya says the Mets won’t sign Pedro Martinez. Buster Olney was on this one earlier in the week, but that was before the Mets had to shut Tim Redding down because of weakness in his pitching shoulder.
- According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle Bobby Crosby played third and first yesterday in a Spring Training game. He had never played first before and had to borrow a glove. Playing well at many positions couldn’t hurt his trade value.
- We missed this one earlier in the week: Bill Shaikin of the LA Times asked Angels GM Tony Reagins if he has interest in Barry Bonds and heard he has "none."
- Barry Svrluga of the Washington Post reports that acting GM Mike Rizzo signed Julian Tavarez to the Nats because he wants depth and doesn’t want his players feeling too comfortable about their jobs.
A’s Place Rob Bowen On Waivers
According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, the A’s placed catcher Rob Bowen on revocable waivers. Bowen is out of options, so he’ll have to clear waivers if the A’s are to send him to Triple A. Bowen came to the A’s in July of 2007 as part of the Jason Kendall deal.
