White Sox Sign Rafael Dolis To Minor League Deal

The White Sox recently signed reliever Rafael Dolis to a minor league contract, as noted by Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America. According to Dolis’ transactions tracker at MLB.com, he has been assigned to the team’s Arizona complex. After some time to build arm strength, he figures to head to Triple-A Charlotte.

Dolis, 34, spent the past two seasons with the Blue Jays. The 6’4″ righty signed a one-year guarantee with Toronto on the heels of a strong four-year run for the Hanshin Tigers in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. He fared well in his initial return stateside, working to a 1.50 ERA with a 31% strikeout rate in 24 innings during the truncated 2020 season. He walked an alarming 14% of batters faced, but the Jays were nevertheless impressed enough with his swing-and-miss acumen they exercised a cheap $1.5MM option on his services for 2021.

That didn’t pan out, as Dolis scuffled last year. He tossed 32 innings — his biggest MLB workload since a 38-inning campaign with the 2012 Cubs — but posted below-average results. Dolis managed just a 5.63 ERA and saw virtually all of his peripherals go in the wrong direction relative to the previous year. His strikeout percentage dropped to 25% as his swinging strike rate dipped from 12.6% to a below-average 10.5% mark. The already-worrisome walk figure spiked even further, while Dolis’ ground-ball rate fell from 50% to 41.4%.

As his struggles continued, the Jays designated Dolis for assignment and passed him through outright waivers in mid-August. He managed better results with Triple-A Buffalo late in the year, but he continued to demonstrate control issues and the Jays never added him back to the 40-man roster. Dolis qualified for minor league free agency after the season and will try to pitch his way back to the big leagues with the ChiSox.

He’ll be joined in that effort by former Yankee Brody Koerner, who also recently signed a non-roster with Chicago (h/t to Hilburn-Trenkle). Koerner was assigned directly to Charlotte earlier this month and has already made a couple appearances for the Knights. The 28-year-old got his first cup of coffee in the majors with New York last August, suiting up in two games and tossing three innings of one-run ball.

Designated for assignment and outrighted just before the Yankees’ Wild Card game, Koerner qualified for minor league free agency. The Clemson product has a 4.92 ERA in 228 2/3 innings at Triple-A, but he owns a more impressive 3.55 mark in three Double-A seasons. Koerner has come out of the bullpen for his first two outings with Charlotte but was primarily a starting pitcher during his time in the New York organization.

Players Recently Electing Free Agency

We’ve seen dozens of players elect minor league free agency over the past couple weeks, and that has continued to be the case in recent days. We’ll round up a few more players who are hitting the open market here, courtesy of the Triple-A transactions trackers.

Players can qualify for minor league free agency in a few ways. The most notable of these include: players with 3+ years of MLB service time who have been outrighted off their teams’ 40-man rosters this season, players who have been outrighted off a 40-man roster multiple times in their careers, and unsigned players not on a 40-man roster who have spent parts of at least seven seasons on a minor league roster or injured list.

Andrew Heaney Elects Free Agency

The Yankees have announced that left-hander Andrew Heaney has elected free agency instead of accepting an outright assignment. Right-hander Brody Koerner meanwhile has been outrighted off the Yankees 40-man roster, joining the RailRiders in Triple-A.

This announcement is largely a formality as it pertains to Heaney, since the free agent-to-be was designated for assignment a few days earlier. This officially concludes a tough 2021 season that will almost definitely serve as a coda to his time in pinstripes.

The 30-year-old Heaney saw action this year both on the Angels and Yankees pitching staffs, posting cumulative 5.83 ERA and a 2.0 HR/9 marks. These results, which include a 7.32 ERA and 3.0 HR/9 rate in the Bronx, quite readily explain why the lefty was given his walking papers instead of a spot on the Yankees postseason roster.

Despite the rough bottom-line results however, Heaney has stronger bounce-back potential than most players in the eyes of some metrics. A 4.12 xFIP and 3.84 SIERA for example both assume Heaney’s home run rate will regress and that his strong 26.9 K% and 7.3 BB% rates will lead to better results moving forward.

Teams who believe they can further tap into Heaney’s potential and help him avoid hard contact are likely to try and invest via a low-risk deal this offseason. Given that Heaney is only 30 years old and still misses plenty of bats it’s quite possible his next contract exceeds expectations.

Koerner appears set to experience a much smoother offseason. After getting his first taste of the big leagues this year, pitching three innings of one-run ball in relief, the 27-year-old will continue on in the only organization he’s ever known. Koerner only helped his stock this past season, with his minor league strikeout, walk, hit, and home run rates all trending in the right direction; that his 3.39 ERA in 2021 is more than a run and a half lower than his 5.00 ERA in 2019 is all the more impressive considering the lost 2020 campaign. While the Yankees likely view the 17th-rounder as a depth option more than anything, they’re surely happy to hang onto a player with swingman upside.

Yankees Designate Andrew Heaney, Brody Koerner For Assignment

The Yankees announced Tuesday that they’ve designated left-hander Andrew Heaney and right-hander Brody Koerner for assignment. The moves clear a pair of spots on the 40-man roster for outfielder Greg Allen and catcher Rob Brantly, whose contracts have been selected from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Heaney, 30, was a deadline pickup for the Yankees whom the team hoped to turn around after a rough start to the season in Anaheim. New York sent minor league righties Janson Junk and Elvis Peguero to the Halos in return for the final couple months of control over Heaney, a free agent at season’s end, but the move didn’t pan out as hoped.

Heaney, long a solid starter with a penchant for missing bats, saw this year’s alarming home run troubles skyrocket following his trade to the Bronx. The Yankees eventually moved him from the rotation to the ’pen, and it was clear he wasn’t a part of the team’s postseason plans when the team optioned him late in the season (a move that required the veteran’s consent).

In 35 2/3 innings with the Yankees, Heaney limped to a 7.32 ERA — due largely to an untenable 13 home runs allowed during that stretch. His 2021 season will come to a close with 129 2/3 frames of 5.83 ERA ball. To his credit, Heaney was markedly better than league-average in terms of strikeout rate (26.9%), walk rate (7.3%), swinging-strike rate (12.5%) and opponents’ chase rate (35.7%). Fielding-independent metrics like xERA (4.01), xFIP (4.12) and SIERA (3.84) all felt he pitched better than that ERA would suggest, but Heaney’s sky-high 2.01 HR/9 mark and 18.1% homer-to-flyball ratio torpedoed his earned run average. Given his mounting troubles keeping the ball in the yard, it’s not a surprise that the Yankees are electing to remove him from the postseason equation — particularly in advance of a sudden-death Wild Card showdown with the Red Sox.

Koerner, 27, had his contract selected for the final day of the season but was not used in a pivotal Game 162 matchup for the Yankees. He made a pair of appearances earlier in the season, allowing a run on two hits and two walks with one strikeout in a combined three innings of relief.

A former 17th-round pick (2015) who’s spent his entire career to date in the Yankees organization, Koerner pitched to a 3.39 ERA with a below-average 19.1% strikeout rate but better-than-average marks in terms of walk rate (7.1%) and ground-ball rate (45.8%) in 77 Triple-A frames this season. He’ll have the opportunity to become a minor league free agent if he goes unclaimed on waivers in the coming days.

The selection of Allen and Brantly from Triple-A gives the Yankees a pair of options on the bench for tonight’s Wild Card game. Allen provides manager Aaron Boone with a late pinch-running option and/or defensive replacement, while Brantly provides some insurance as an in-case-of-emergency third catcher.

Yankees Select Brody Koerner, Transfer Luke Voit To 60-Day IL

The Yankees have selected the contract of right-hander Brody Koerner and optioned him to Triple-A, per a team announcement. To make room on the 40-man roster, first baseman Luke Voit was transferred from the 10-day IL to the 60-day IL.

For Voit, this officially ends his season and eliminates any chance of him returning to the club at some point during the postseason. Overall, it was a disappointing campaign for the slugger, as he was hampered by injuries, with multiple trips to the IL, primarily due to his knee. He managed to get into 68 games at the MLB level and hit .239/.328/.437. That production was still 11% better than league average as measured by wRC+. However, that’s a big drop-off from the wRC+ of 153 that he put up during the shortened 2020 campaign and the 126 he had over 118 games in 2019.

It was perhaps because of Voit’s continued struggles to stay healthy that the Yankees acquired a replacement first baseman at the deadline in the form of Anthony Rizzo. However, Rizzo is a free agent at the end of this season, meaning that the Yankees could let Voit take over as the regular first baseman again in 2022. Though that will probably depend on how his health progresses over the coming months and through the winter. Voit reached arbitration for the first time last winter as a Super Two player. He and the Yankees agreed to a $4.7MM salary for 2021. He would be in line for a modest raise for 2022.

Koerner was previously selected to the roster in early August and lasted about three weeks before being outrighted back to Triple-A. In that time, he only got into two games, logging three innings with two hits, two walks, one earned run and one strikeout. In Triple-A this year, he’s logged 75 innings with an ERA of 3.48 and 60 strikeouts. He could potentially be an emergency option for the Yankees during the postseason. Players in the organization but not on the 40-man roster before September 1 can still participate in the playoffs via a petition to the Commissioner’s Office, a fairly common maneuver throughout the league.

Yankees Activate Gio Urshela

The Yankees activated third baseman Gio Urshela for tonight’s ballgame. Urshela joins the surging Yankees in the midst of an 11-game winning streak. Though the Yanks couldn’t be trending much better right now, Urshela does have the potential to be an impactful addition for the stretch run.

Urshela should slot right back into his regular role at third base, pushing Rougned Odor to a bench role for which he’s probably better suited. Give Odor his due, however, as he’s put up 1.0 WAR as a Yankee by measure of baseball-reference’s or Fangraphs’ WAR.

That value has largely come from his glovework at the hot corner. Odor has logged 2.0 DRS/1.3 UZR over 169 innings while providing decent pop in the form of .194 ISO. Urshela is still probably the preferred gloveman at third, but Odor’s performance could allow manager Aaron Boone to continue using Urshela at shortstop on occasion — as he had done before Urshela’s latest injury. A hamstring strain has kept Urshela out of action for almost a month now, however, so Boone could choose a more conservative approach to ease Ushela back into regular gameplay.

In terms of the logistics, Jonathan Davis was optioned back to Triple-A yesterday to make room on the active roster. Brody Koerner was outrighted to Triple-A today as well. Koerner, 27, had made just two appearances with the big league club this season.

Yankees Claim Jonathan Davis Off Waivers From Blue Jays

The Yankees announced a series of roster moves before this evening’s game against the Orioles. Most notably, outfielder Jonathan Davis has been claimed off waivers from the Blue Jays. New York also selected the contracts of right-handers Brody Koerner and Stephen Ridings. They’re replacing Gerrit Cole and Jordan Montgomery, who landed on the COVID-19 injured list after testing positive for the virus.

Davis lost his 40-man roster spot when the Jays acquired Joakim Soria before last Friday’s trade deadline. The 29-year-old appeared in the majors with the Jays in each of the past four seasons, tallying a combined 241 plate appearances of .180/.285/.263 hitting. While he hasn’t performed well at the big league level, Davis has a decent .256/.357/.421 line over parts of three seasons at Triple-A.

Koerner and Ridings are both in line to make their big league debuts. Koener, a 17th-round pick of the Yankees back in 2015, has done very well at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre this season. Through 61 innings, the Clemson University product has a 2.95 ERA, the seventh-lowest mark among the 49 Triple-A East pitchers with 50+ innings pitched. His 18.3% strikeout rate is below-average, but Koerner has also issued walks at a lower than typical 7.8% clip.

Ridings began his career as an 8th-round draftee of the Cubs out of Haverford College. He was a starting pitcher early in his minor league tenure (which also included some time in the Royals system).  This year, though, he’s worked exclusively in relief, splitting the campaign between Double-A Somerset and Scranton. Altogether, the 25-year-old has pitched to a sterling 1.24 ERA in 29 innings, striking out an elite 38.2% of opponents while walking just 3.6%.

Because Koerner and Ridings were selected to the roster as COVID replacements, they can be returned to the minor leagues and removed from the 40-man without being exposed to waivers upon others’ returns from the IL.
