Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Peavy, Giants, Rays, M’s, Lidge, Beltre

By Cork Gaines | May 22, 2009 at 2:38pm CDT

On this date seven years ago, the A's traded Jeremy Giambi to the Phillies for John Mabry. At the time of the deal, Giambi was hitting .274/.390/.471 with 8 home runs and Mabry was essentially a pinch-hitter. Giambi would go on to hit 12 more home runs for the Phils but would play only one more season in the big leagues. As rumors start to fly in the '09 season, let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere…

  • Fire Ned Colletti Now would be happy to see a team other than the Dodgers trade for Jake Peavy.
  • Jorge Says No! says the Brewers should look into trading for Jake Peavy.
  • McCovey Chronicles takes a look at some deadline deal possibilities for the Giants, including Matt Holliday, Carl Crawford and Ichiro.
  • The Rays Party notes that Jason Isringhausen makes for a crowded bullpen which may indicate that the Devil Rays ($29) are about to make a deal.
  • Phlavio's Corner takes a look at some options to replace Carlos Delgado.
  • Around the Majors takes a look back at the Brad Lidge extension and wonders if it was a mistake.
  • Bleeding Blue and Teal would like to see the Mariners make a deal for Ben Zobrist.
  • The Detroit Tigers Weblog now admits that the Edwin Jackson-Matt Joyce trade may have been good for the Tigers.
  • MLB Notebook sees a few possible trade destinations for Adrian Beltre including both Chicago franchises.

Carlos Delgado To Have Hip Surgery

By Tim Dierkes | May 18, 2009 at 5:16pm CDT

An update from the Mets on Carlos Delgado: he'll have hip surgery tomorrow, and will probably be out until the All-Star break.  We discussed possible replacements a few times here at MLBTR, but the Mets might be able to make it a few months with in-house candidates.

Odds & Ends: Mets, Cubs, Astros

By Tim Dierkes | May 18, 2009 at 11:16am CDT

Links for Monday…

  • Nationals GM Mike Rizzo told Baseball America's Jim Callis that the team's #10 overall draft pick will not be influenced by signability.  MLB.com's Bill Ladson's source believes negotiations between Rizzo and Scott Boras for Stephen Strasburg will go well, given their past history.
  • Regarding Friday's call for MLBTR writers, I still have many applications to review.  I will keep you updated here on the site.
  • McCovey Chronicles discusses The Jonathan Sanchez Paradox.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post names Nick Johnson, Aubrey Huff, and Mark DeRosa as the most probable trade targets for the Mets if Carlos Delgado is out for an extended period of time.  Check out MLBTR's discussion of this topic from Saturday.  SI.com's Jon Heyman also weighed in today.
  • Daniel Kaplan of SportsBusiness Journal has an update on progress made on the sale of the Cubs.
  • On Sunday, Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote that Freddy Sanchez's current contract clause will likely cause the Pirates to avoid vesting options in the future.
  • On June 1st, Alyson Footer will begin a new job working for the Astros.  The new MLB.com beat writer will be Brian McTaggart, who covered the team for the Houston Chronicle.

Mets Considering Trading For A First Baseman

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 16, 2009 at 12:35pm CDT

As Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post reports, Carlos Delgado's hip problems have put his career in jeopardy. For now he's on the DL, but there's no immediate timeline for his return. This leaves the Mets without a first baseman. Here are some of Minaya's options:

  • Fernando Tatis could play first, perhaps with help from Daniel Murphy. Gary Sheffield's probably not an option anywhere but the outfield.
  • The Mets could sign Richie Sexson, Jose Vidro or another free agent
  • He could make a trade. Jerry Manuel said Minaya's looking at trade possibilities. Could a player like Aubrey Huff or Jorge Cantu be a fit?

Odds & Ends: Strasburg, Lester, Pudge

By Tim Dierkes | March 9, 2009 at 11:28am CDT

Links for Monday…

  • Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel talked to Brewers GM Doug Melvin, who said the Yankees have yet to contact him regarding their possible third base need.
  • ESPN’s Rob Neyer says the Mets don’t need Pedro Martinez.
  • The scouts Buster Olney talked to absolutely adore Stephen Strasburg.  One of them said, "Right now, he’s better than A.J. Burnett."  There’s no way the Nationals can pass on a talent like this.
  • WEEI’s Alex Speier compares Jon Lester’s record-breaking contract to others given to young pitchers.
  • Jim Baumbach of Newsday talked to Mets first baseman Carlos Delgado, who promoted Ivan Rodriguez and noted that assistant GM Tony Bernazard observed the catcher’s four-hit, two home run performance in Puerto Rico Saturday.
  • ESPN’s Peter Gammons notes the affordability of Boston’s pitching staff.

Mets Rumors: Fuentes, Cordero, Delgado

By Tim Dierkes | November 6, 2008 at 5:18pm CDT

5:18pm: More on the Mets: Ken Davidoff says they’re shopping Aaron Heilman, Scott Schoeneweis, and Pedro Feliciano.  The A’s, Rays, and Rangers are fans of Heilman.  The Rockies, Cardinals, Cubs, and D’Backs were also tossed into the mix by Adam Rubin, though the D’Backs haven’t had recent talks.   The Mets would be willing to pick up some of the $3.6MM owed to Schoeneweis next year.

4:58pm: Brian Fuentes’ agent Rick Thurman calls the below rumor of an offer to the Mets a "total fabrication."

10:56am: Checking in on the Mets…

  • Tracy Ringolsby says Brian Fuentes’ agents proposed a four-year, $44MM deal to the Mets.  Ringolsby heard the Indians and Cardinals don’t want to go beyond two years.  The Mets also met with Francisco Rodriguez’s agent.
  • The Mets are considering free agent Chad Cordero, who is coming off July shoulder surgery.
  • GM Omar Minaya seems willing to spend big money on a closer and one starter, and then fill the other starting spot cheaply.  The Mets could, say, sign Derek Lowe and trade for the affordable Edwin Jackson.  The Mets haven’t exchanged names yet for Jackson.
  • Ryan Dempster and Jon Garland may be on the radar, as Minaya met with their agent yesterday.  Dempster’s agent said he can handle New York.
  • Carlos Delgado approached the Mets late in the season about an extension for 2010, but they decided to pass.  Delgado wasn’t bothered by this.
  • Ken Davidoff adds that the Mets have let scout/former Bulls GM Jerry Krause go.

Mets Prioritize Pitching

By Tim Dierkes | November 5, 2008 at 9:15pm CDT

9:15pm: Michael Schmidt has a look at the amusing binder the Boras Corporation compiled to sell Oliver Perez.

6:31pm: Mets GM Omar Minaya commented on Manny Ramirez, indicating that he plans to invest in pitching instead.

2:34pm: The Mets expressed preliminary interest in Jon Garland and Ryan Dempster, according to Ken Davidoff.  Dempster’s agent made it clear that he won’t be re-signing with the Cubs soon.

1:23pm: ESPN’s Buster Olney wrote in his blog this morning that the Mets are probably not willing to go past three years for Francisco Rodriguez or any reliever.

10:03am: More Mets chatter from Joel Sherman of the New York Post. He says the Mets and Rays have had preliminary discussions about Edwin Jackson and Andy Sonnanstine.  The Rays have some interest in Aaron Heilman, though the Mets would need to give more.

Sherman believes the Mets’ interest in Ibanez is minor, and Carlos Delgado or Ryan Church would have to be dealt first.

9:45am: The Mets are prioritizing pitching this winter, based on articles by Mike Puma of the New York Post, Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News, and Ken Davidoff of Newsday.  Let’s dig in!

  • Puma says the Mets have Scott Boras clients Oliver Perez and Derek Lowe on the radar.  Perez offers the benefit of familiarity, though he’s not likely to sign quickly.  Ken Rosenthal says the Mets would probably do $12MM a year for Perez, but Boras will want more.  Rubin notes that Lowe is doubly attractive to the Mets for his closing experience.
  • Rubin lists the Rockies, Cardinals, Cubs, and D’Backs as potential trade destinations for Aaron Heilman.  The Rays have also been connected to Heilman.
  • Davidoff mentions Omar Minaya’s Javier Vazquez connection.  ESPN’s Keith Law says the Vazquez to the Mets rumor "appears to have originated in the Chicago camp, and the White Sox are keen to move him."
  • ESPN’s Buster Olney says the Mets inquired on Rays pitcher Edwin Jackson.
  • Davidoff also points out the Mets’ interest in Raul Ibanez despite their emphasis on pitching.  The Royals and Cubs are also in on Ibanez so far.

Odds And Ends: Street, Schilling, Tigers

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 1, 2008 at 12:44pm CDT

Links for Saturday…

  • Huston Street tries to ignore the chatter, but realizes he might be traded before the season starts.
  • Curt Schilling’s Red Sox career is probably over, writes MLB.com’s Ian Browne.
  • Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said the Tigers are open to improving the team in creative ways, but he’s not looking to trade away the team’s "core players."
  • Other than Justin Verlander and Armando Galarraga, there’s a whole lot of uncertainty in the Tigers’ 2009 rotation, writes Jon Paul Morosi.
  • It looks like the Mets won’t trade Carlos Delgado. Instead, they’ll focus on rebuilding their bullpen and improving in left field and at second base.
  • Junichi Tazawa will meet with the Mariners and Braves Tuesday. Now the Phillies are in the mix for his services, too.

Mets Pick Up Delgado’s Option

By Tim Dierkes | October 31, 2008 at 9:00am CDT

According to Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog, the Mets picked up Carlos Delgado’s $12MM option for 2009 today.  GM Omar Minaya announced this plan about a month ago.

It was an easy call on Delgado, given the $4MM buyout.  The 36 year-old first baseman hit .271/.353/.518 in 686 plate appearances.

Minaya Extended; Delgado Will Stay

By Tim Dierkes | October 2, 2008 at 11:44am CDT

The Mets made Omar Minaya’s extension official today.  It runs through 2012 with club options for two years beyond that.  Matthew Cerrone at MetsBlog likes the decision, but feels the term is excessive.

Additionally, Minaya announced that the Mets will exercise Carlos Delgado’s $12MM option for ’09.  This seemed like an easy decision given the $4MM buyout.  The Mets were not going to find an .800 OPS first baseman on the free agent market for a one-year, $8MM deal.

On the bullpen front, ESPN’s Buster Olney says rival execs expect the Mets to aggressively pursue free agent Brian Fuentes.  I’m thinking three years, $30MM.
