Mets Rumors: Lackey, Figgins, Delgado, Francoeur

By Zachary Links | November 14, 2009 at 1:50pm CDT

The Mets plan to be serious bidders for the services of John Lackey, writes David Lennon of Newsday.  GM Omar Minaya reportedly "received a favorable first impression" from a meeting earlier this week with Lackey's agent, Steve Hilliard.  Lennon points out that the Mets successfully zeroed in on free agent closer Francisco Rodriguez last offseason and secured his services for $37MM over three years, short of what some expected.

Here's a look at some of the other tidbits Lennon brings us in this piece:

  • If the Mets sign the versatile Chone Figgins, he would be placed in left field.  Under that plan, Lennon says the Mets could be stuck with Luis Castillo.  As one might expect, the expensive addition of Figgins would rule out outfielders Jason Bay and Matt Holliday.
  • The Mets could be keeping tabs on Carlos Delgado as part of their plan to ink Figgins.  The 37-year-old, if deemed healthy, would be a reasonably priced solution at first base.
  • Although Minaya wouldn't rule out an extension for Jeff Francoeur, Lennon says it is not likely to happen.

Mets Rumors: Delgado, Francoeur, Non-Tenders

By Tim Dierkes | November 13, 2009 at 2:47pm CDT

The New York Post's Bart Hubbuch has some good Mets info this afternoon, though it is unfortunately broken up into three tweets.

  • Hubbuch learned that Mets GM Omar Minaya intends to watch Carlos Delgado in winter ball next month.  Delgado could probably be re-signed cheaply after hip surgery limited the 37-year-old to 112 plate appearances this year.
  • Cross Jeff Francoeur off the list of non-tender candidates – Minaya said Francoeur will be back and also mentioned that an extension is a possibility.  Mets fans – do you believe Francoeur's 308 plate appearances with the club represent a reformed hitter?
  • Hubbuch says Mets officials "plan to look hard" at the group of non-tendered players.  Those additional free agents will be known on December 12th.  Here are our candidates.

Mets Notes: Holliday, Barajas, Pineiro

By Mark Polishuk | November 10, 2009 at 7:34pm CDT

Lots of newsbits swirling about the Big Apple's non-World Series winners…

  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that the Mets will meet with Scott Boras tonight to at least get an idea of what it will take to sign Matt Holliday.
  • As reported earlier today, the Mets weren't interested in Jason Varitek but were considering Bengie Molina at catcher.  Sherman (also via Twitter) added Rod Barajas and Chris Snyder to the New York catching "wish list."
  • SI's Jon Heyman (via Twitter) reports the Mets are interested in Joel Pineiro, but not at his reported demand of a three-year/$30MM contract.
  • MLB.com's Barry Bloom figures that Gary Sheffield and Carlos Delgado are both done in New York after Mets GM Omar Minaya was very non-committal about the possibility of re-signing either of the two veteran sluggers.
  • The Toronto Sun's Bob Elliott, however, thinks the Mets will at least "keep an eye" on Delgado's progress in winter ball (via Twitter).

Mets Rumors: Bay, Holliday, Cameron, Delgado

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 10, 2009 at 9:38am CDT

A team insider suggests to Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News that Jason Bay and Matt Holliday may be too expensive for the Mets to consider. Rubin hears that the Mets expect to trade for a left fielder or spend on a second-tier free agent, since the top outfielders on the free agent market may be too pricey.

A source close to Mike Cameron tells Rubin that the one-time Met wouldn't likely consider returning, since he wants to play center field (the Mets, of course, have Carlos Beltran in center). Gary Sheffield will not return to the Mets, according to Rubin.

The club intends to use Daniel Murphy at first base in 2010, but they have not ruled out bringing free agent first baseman Carlos Delgado back. The slugger would have to be willing to accept a low-cost, one-year deal, but Delgado won't likely see multi-year offers this winter.

The Mets are interested in signing Bengie Molina, but they may look elsewhere if he demands more years than they're willing to commit to.

Odds & Ends: Chapman, Padres, Orioles, Coste

By Mike Axisa | October 27, 2009 at 7:26pm CDT

Here's a few links to help you through another baseball-less night…

  • Kiley McDaniel of Baseball Prospectus tweets that Aroldis Chapman will throw a bullpen at Fenway tomorrow.
  • ESPN's Keith Law says that firing VP of scouting and player development Grady Fuson was a good move by new GM Jed Hoyer and the Padres. He notes that San Diego's drafts have been among the worst in the game over the last few years, although they did change course last year.
  • Peter Schmuck of The Baltimore Sun says the Orioles need a power hitter at one of the corner infield spots, and mentions that players like Adrian Beltre, Troy Glaus, or Carlos Delgado could represent a decent stop gap.
  • Chris Coste became a free agent after being outrighted by the Astros, says Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.
  • Phil Wood of MASNsports.com has news on a few front office hirings by the Nationals.
  • The Phillies added Brett Myers to their World Series roster according to David Murphy of The Philadephia Daily News. The 29-year-old righthander could earn himself a few extra bucks in free agency with a big series.

By Cork Gaines | October 16, 2009 at 12:51pm CDT

On this date six years ago, Aaron Boone ended the ALCS with an 11th inning home run off of Tim Wakefield. Yesterday we learned that Boone is likely to retire, ending his 12-year career. With this season's LCS underway, 26 teams are already in the Hot Stove season. Let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere…

  • Twins Geek examines the Twinkies '10 payroll.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Webb, Soria, Red Sox, Pirates, Verlander, Felix

By Cork Gaines | September 25, 2009 at 3:33pm CDT

On this date five years ago, Carlos Delgado hit his 300th career home run. He would go on to hit three more home runs that game to become just the 15th big leaguer to hit four in one game. Now in the final year of a five-year, $60MM contract, Delgado has a season average of .298 with four homers and 23 RBI in the 26 games he played before his hip surgery. Jon Heyman reported that the Mets are open to bringing him back next year. However, Adam Rubin wrote that the Mets will not offer Delgado arbitration. With one week remaining before the off-season starts for most teams, let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere…

  • MLB Notebook looks at where Brandon Webb could end up if the D'Backs decline his option.
  • Royals Authority wonders if the Phillies would be a good trade partner to land Joakim Soria.
  • The Bottom Line writes that the Red Sox either have to re-sign Jason Bay or pick up Matt Holliday.
  • Bucco Fans says the Pirates have money to spend this off-season and speculates on where that money might be spent.
  • Jorge Says No! speculates on what it might take to sign Justin Verlander to an extension.
  • Prospect Insider looks at what it might take to sign Felix Hernandez to an extension.
  • Blogging Mets lists Omar Minaya's worst moves.
  • Sports: A Game Of Inches compares Jonny Gomes to Adam Dunn. Gomes will be arbitration-eligible after the season.

Odds & Ends: Indians, Delgado, Harper, Matsui

By Mike Axisa | September 19, 2009 at 12:13pm CDT

Here's some links to kick off your Saturday…

  • Paul Hoynes of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Indians have requested that MLB run DNA tests on a few international players the team is negotiating with to confirm their identities. The Tribe got burned when 17-year-old shortstop Jose Ozoria turned out to be 20-year-old Wally Branyan last year.
  • Michael Baron of MetsBlog.com says that Carlos Delgado hasn't really talked to the Mets' front office about returning next year, but he'd love to come back.
  • MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo breaks down the challenges facing Bryce Harper heading into the 2010 Draft.
  • The Astros may explore the possibility of Kaz Matsui returning to Japan, according to Richard Justice of The Houston Chronicle.

Heyman’s Latest: Jeter, Wagner, Delgado, Lackey

By Mike Axisa | September 11, 2009 at 5:11pm CDT

No team is successful without good coaching and guidance, so SI.com's Jon Heyman pays homage to those who got the job done behind the scenes by naming his ten most unsung heroes of the 2009 season. Rangers' pitching coach Mike Maddux tops the list, and several other familiar names make an appearance.

Here's the rest of Heyman's rumors…

  • Heyman guesses that the Yankees will resign Derek Jeter for at least $60MM over three years once his contract expires after next season. That's a lot of scratch for a guy who would be entering his age-37 season.
  • The Red Sox have "every intention" of offering Billy Wagner arbitration, and barring something unexpected, Wagner has every intention of turning it down. He's projected to be a Type-A free agent, so Boston would walk away with two high draft picks in that scenario.
  • Out since early May with a hip injury, Carlos Delgado hasn't given up on the idea of playing again this year. The Mets would be happy to accomodate him, because according to Heyman's sources the team has thought about bringing him back on an incentive laden contract. A late season cameo would at least give them a look at what kind of shape he's in.
  • Stop me if you've heard this before: the Mets might consider Orlando Hudson this offseason if they can find a taker for Luis Castillo. That's what, three times in the last 24 hours?
  • The Angels tried to sign John Lackey for four years and $60MM last offseason. Given the lack of impact starting pitching available this year, Lackey's price has gone up.
  • In regards to Ken Griffey Jr. and his .214 AVG, Heyman says "this has to be the end, no?" Griffey hasn't said anything about his future yet, though.
  • Kansas City ownership has "often prevented its baseball people from making deadline trades in order to avoid the dreaded 100-loss season." This strategy probably works against them in the long run, but Heyman suggests it may "make them a tougher team than some also-rans who hit the wall."
  • There's no evidence that Lou Piniella is a candidate to be fired (his $4MM option for 2010 has already been picked up), but the question about whether he wants to return or not has to be asked. Sweet Lou's body language did not look good last weekend.

Odds And Ends: Wagner, Red Sox, Scherzer

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | August 7, 2009 at 9:48am CDT

An assortment of links to get the day started…

  • Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News hears that one AL contender has at least some interest in adding Billy Wagner for the stretch run. The lefty makes $10.5MM this year and has a $1MM buyout for 2010, so Wagner seems likely to clear waivers.
  • Rubin says the Mets won't likely offer Wagner or Carlos Delgado arbitration after the season.
  • As Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports, Max Scherzer uses some pretty advanced stats to judge his performances.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post hears that the Yanks and Padres almost completed the Chad Gaudin trade before the deadline. When Kenny Williams called about the Jake Peavy deal, Towers had to ignore Cashman, but the teams struck a deal in the end.
  • Danny Knobler of CBS Sports says one look at John Smoltz's face suggests he may be done.
  • Yahoo's Gordon Edes says Smoltz looked like a "pitcher turned pinata" last night.
  • Sam Donnellon of the Philadelphia Inquirer says Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. looks pretty smart right now.
