Minor Moves: Salcedo, Trepagnier, Constanza, Figueroa

By Mark Polishuk | February 5, 2015 at 9:29pm CDT

Before diving into the latest minor league transactions, check out Steve Adams’ piece about how much work can go into negotiating these seemingly “minor” contracts. Here are today’s moves, with the newest transactions at the top of the post…

  • The Braves traded infielder Edward Salcedo to the Pirates in exchange for right-hander Bryton Trepagnier, Yahoo Sports’ Jeff Passan reports (Twitter link).  Atlanta signed Salcedo to a $1.6MM bonus in 2010 and he entered the season as the 12th-ranked prospect in the Braves’ system according to Baseball America.  He has yet to find much success at the plate, hitting .230/.297/.375 over 2447 minor league PA and posting only a .651 OPS over 413 PA at the Triple-A level last season.  Trepagnier, a 41st-round pick in the 2010 draft, has pitched mostly as a reliever in his five-year pro career, posting a 4.19 ERA, 1.59 K/BB rate and 7.1 K/9 over 204 innings, none above the high-A ball level.
  • The Braves outrighted outfielder Jose Constanza to Triple-A Gwinnett, according to the International League’s transactions page. Atlanta designated Constanza for assignment last week. The 31-year-old has spent the last four seasons in the Braves organization, including 240 plate appearances at the Major League level.
  • The Yankees have signed Cole Figueroa to a minor league contract with an invitation to their Spring Training camp. The team announced the move as part of its full list of spring invitees. Figueroa owns a .288/.377/.388 slash line over 2944 career plate appearances in the minors, and he made his Major League debut last season, posting a .611 OPS over 49 PA for the Rays. Figueroa was released by Tampa Bay in November.

NL East Notes: Stanton, Upton, Mets, Salcedo

By Mark Polishuk | November 16, 2012 at 6:37pm CDT

We've already had one collection of NL East Notes today, but there's no shortage of news coming out of the division.  Here's the latest…

  • Giancarlo Stanton is still upset about the Marlins' sudden rebuild, telling Peter Gammons of MLB.com that "former Marlins come back and they warn us" about the club's history of firesales and that it is a constant source of discussion amongst current players.  "This is the 'winning philosophy?' Then to say it's not about money? What is the motivation? There comes a breaking point. I know how I feel. I can't imagine how the city and the fans feel," Stanton said.
  • The Marlins and Blue Jays have officially filed the paperwork about their big 12-player trade with the league, reports Rogers Sportsnet's Shi Davidi (via Twitter).  Monday is the most likely date for the trade to be finalized, though it could happen over the weekend.
  • The Nationals have been in contact with free agent outfielder B.J. Upton, reports Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post, and are "expected to have increased communication" as the offseason progresses.  Upton visited the Braves and Phillies earlier this week.
  • Mets GM Sandy Alderson said his team will need "a little more clarity" on the contract situations of David Wright and R.A. Dickey by the time the Winter Meetings roll around, reports Newsday's Marc Carig.  "At some point we need resolution on these discussions to be able to move on. But that time is not now," Alderson said, aiming at the 10 days between Thanksgiving and the start of the Winter Meetings on December 3 as a prime negotiating period.
  • Edward Salcedo received a $1.6MM bonus from the Braves as an 18-year-old in 2010, though the 21-year-old hasn't yet lived up to his potential in the minors, writes David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Odds & Ends: Ortiz, Brewers, Salcedo, Miller

By Mike Axisa | March 13, 2010 at 9:04pm CDT

Links for Saturday…

  • David Ortiz said he isn't letting his contract situation get to him, writes ESPN Boston's Gordon Edes. Big Papi will earn $12.5MM this year, and the Red Sox hold an option at the same salary for 2011 with no buyout. Tough to see them picking that one up.
  • An interesting point raised by MLB.com's Adam McCalvy: The Brewers essentially traded Hernan Iribarren to the Rangers for Joe Inglett.  Milwaukee picked up Inglett in January after he was waived by Texas.  Mat Gamel and Inglett are now in the mix for the Brewers' final bench spot.
  • Edward Salcedo was officially introduced to Braves reporters this morning, writes Mark Bowman of MLB.com.  The 18-year-old Dominican shortstop said that Atlanta was the only organization to show significant interest in him over the past two years.
  • Jim Edmonds may be playing his way into a role with the Brewers, writes Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.
  • Both the Diamondbacks and Mariners had interest in Dana Eveland before he was acquired by the Blue Jays, tweets MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez.
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FoxSports.com spoke to a scout who wouldn't be surprised if the Marlins traded lefty Andrew Miller (link goes to Twitter).
  • David Murphy is just biding his time on Texas' bench, writes Anthony Andro of The Star-Telegram. Murphy is a .278/.336/.465 career hitter, but he might get too expensive for a bench job as he enters his first arbitration year after 2010.
  • Ben Shpigel of The New York Times reports that Yankees' hitting coach Kevin Long was analyzing videotape of Curtis Granderson to help him improve against lefthanders way back in November, a month before the team traded for him.

Braves Sign Edward Salcedo

By Tim Dierkes | February 23, 2010 at 3:22pm CDT

The Braves officially signed 18-year-old Dominican shortstop Edward Salcedo to a deal worth $1.6MM today. He was considered one of the best prospects in Latin America back in 2008, however MLB launched an investigation to confirm his age and identity at the Braves’ behest.

Salcedo’s birthday was recently established as July 30, 1991. Originally represented by Scott Boras, Salcedo is now represented by Edgar Mercedes, who said the Braves were his client’s first option. Reports in 2008 indicated that Boras was seeking upwards of $5MM for Salcedo. Atlanta recently applied for a visa to allow him to visit their Spring Training complex.

Atlanta considered Salcedo the equivalent of a high first round pick, which is good because they forfeited their 2010 first rounder to sign Billy Wagner and didn’t receive compensation picks for Rafael Soriano. Already standing 6′-3″, Salcedo is considered to be one of the best offensive players to come out of the Dominican in quite some time, however there are some questions about his ability to remain at short.

The AP first reported that Salcedo’s age had been confirmed (thanks to Nick Collias for the translation), and MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reported that the two sides were near an agreement. Dave O’Brien of The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported the terms.

Mike Axisa contributed to this post.

Indians Notes: Cabrera, Salcedo, Shapiro

By Zachary Links | February 22, 2010 at 7:07pm CDT

Some Indians tidbits courtesy of MLB.com's Anthony Castrovince..

  • The Indians believe that they have the long-term financial flexibility to investigate long-term deals for their emerging core players such as Asdrubal Cabrera and Shin-Soo Choo.  Both players will be arbitration-eligible at season's end and eligible for free agency after the 2013 season.
  • In other Choo news, the South Korea native is facing a deadline from his country to enlist in the military.  The 27-year-old is hoping to receive an exemption but has a backup plan in case he is denied, writes Castrovince.
  • The Tribe's interest in Edward Salcedo appears to have been overstated.  To Castrovince's knowledge, they have not been linked to him since two years ago, when a Dominican newspaper reported that they signed the shortstop.
  • The promotions of Mark Shapiro and Chris Antonetti are "unsurprising" to Castrovince.  He writes that while some fans are upset with the promotion, one must consider the financial constraints the two men have had to work with in recent years.

Odds & Ends: Floyd, Looper, El Duque, Manny

By Tim Dierkes | February 22, 2010 at 1:16pm CDT

Links for Monday…

  • Cliff Floyd is currently doing TV work, writes Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post.
  • MLB.com's Bill Ladson tweeted that the Nationals offered contracts to Chan Ho Park and Braden Looper.  Park went with the Yankees, while Looper told the Nats he's going in a different direction.
  • Orlando Hernandez is looking to get back in the game, tweets Yahoo's Tim Brown.
  • Magglio Ordonez wants to play at least four more years, reports Tom Gage of the Detroit News.
  • FOX Sports' Jim Bowden questioned Justin Upton, Theo Epstein, Jon Daniels, Dayton Moore, Kevin Goldstein, and Dave Cameron about modern statistics, and it made for an amusing video segment.
  • Chico Harlan of the Washington Post talked to several Nationals players about their arbitration hearings, which were not enjoyable.  ESPN's Rob Neyer doesn't think it makes sense for players to attend.
  • Manny Ramirez believes this is his last year with the Dodgers, reports Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times.
  • Duaner Sanchez signed with the Mexico City Red Devils, reports Noroeste.  Though Sanchez is said to be throwing "an easy 90 mph," his shoulder is still not 100 percent.  He hopes to find his way back to the bigs after being released by the Padres in May of '09.  Thanks to Nick Collias for the translation.
  • Jesse Lund of the Twinkie Town blog has an excellent discussion with Twins assistant GM Rob Antony.  Antony provided details on the J.J. Hardy trade talks, and also noted that the Kevin Kouzmanoff rumors were "a little blown out of proportion."
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post doesn't buy the idea that the pressure will be off for Javier Vazquez as the Yankees #4 starter.
  • Regarding catcher A.J. Pierzynski entering his contract year, White Sox GM Kenny Williams told Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times, "At some point, we'll check in with A.J. and his guys on expectations."
  • The Diamondbacks offered Dominican shortstop Edward Salcedo around $1MM, reports Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic.

Odds & Ends: Dodgers, Upton, Damon, White Sox

By Zachary Links | February 21, 2010 at 10:54pm CDT

Sunday night linkage..

  • Confidential documents in the McCourts' divorce hearing reveal that the Dodgers may seek to spend on players at level pace while doubling ticket prices and revenue through 2018, writes Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.  This is bad news for Dodgers fans as the uncertain financial status of the club has limited their activity this winter.
  • The Indians are keeping mum on their feelings about Edward Salcedo's reportedly impending deal with the Braves, writes Paul Hoynes of The Plain Dealer.  Salcedo, according to a Dominican paper, was signed by the Tribe in 2007.  The club denied this and word that the prospect lied about his age followed.
  • Todd Wellemeyer is fighting for a spot with the Giants in Spring Training, writes Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News.  Wellemeyer had a disappointing 2009 for the Cardinals, posting a 5.89 ERA with 5.7 K/9 and 4.2 BB/9.
  • Even though the D-Backs find themselves with two starting-caliber catchers in Miguel Montero and Chris Snyder, GM Josh Byrnes won't try to trade the latter, writes Gilbert.  Snyder was nearly dealt for Lyle Overbay in November before the Blue Jays got cold feet.
  • Justin Upton has had discussions with the Diamondbacks regarding a contract extension, writes Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.  The 22-year-old is under contractual control for four more years.
  • Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports writes that some Scott Boras detractors believe he sacrificed Johnny Damon for Matt Holliday.  Some rival agents and club executives assert that the super-agent declined to negotiate with the Yankees regarding Damon early on, allowing the possibility that they could pursue Holliday.  Boras scoffed at the notion when asked about it by Rosenthal.
  • Jake Peavy would have liked to see Damon join the White Sox, writes Scott Merkin of MLB.com.

Odds & Ends: Boras, Cordero, NCAA Agents

By Steve Adams | February 19, 2009 at 9:51pm CDT

Some links for your Thursday night viewing pleasure…

  • Diamond Leung has some Dodgers notes, including a particularly interesting one regarding Scott Boras. Earlier, Peter Gammons reported that the Dodgers scouting department wouldn’t be touching any Boras clients in the June draft. Leung refutes that, citing Dodgers Assistant General Manager of Scouting Logan White’s statement that the Dodgers will consider Boras clients because "talent comes first."
  • The Nationals have been watching Chad Cordero’s auditions, according to Dave Sheinin. Cordero threw 40 pitches "at 70-75 percent effort" the other day. Cordero’s agent, Larry Reynolds, says that he’s on pace to be ready for Opening Day.
  • Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News has a good article highlighting Okalahome State University lefty Andy Oliver and his victory in a lawsuit against the NCAA. Oliver challenged the rule that athletes cannot have attorneys participate in direct negotiations with Major League teams prior to being drafted. Oliver was suspended prior to an NCAA Regional in 2008.
  • Ringolsby also notes, in the same article, that the Braves have interest in Garret Anderson.
  • Tim Hudson got into a heated exchange with a reporter in the clubhouse, regarding the recent Ken Griffey Jr. drama, and had to be separated by a team official, according to the AP.
  • Speaking of Griffey, the Mariners will hold a press conference for him this Saturday, Geoff Baker reports.
  • Anthony Castrovince reports that Edward Salcedo, a top Dominican prospect who had been tied to the Indians last year, had an investigation launched surrounding his age. There were doubts that he was really 16, which obviously quieted talks.

Odds and Ends: Hanley, Salcedo, Torrealba

By Tim Dierkes | May 16, 2008 at 10:16am CDT

Time to round ’em up…

  • Rob Neyer guesses B.J. Upton is the next to get a long-term deal from the Rays.  Back on April 24th, Jayson Stark wrote that the Upton family "has its own ideas about the market value of both brothers."
  • Expect a Hanley Ramirez press conference today, or this weekend at the latest.
  • Tribe Report walks us through the Edward Salcedo confusion.
  • Yorvit Torrealba’s agent has filed a grievance against the Mets over their nearly-signed three-year deal.
  • Jon Heyman says nothing’s imminent with Ken Griffey Jr.  Buster Olney wrote today that the Mariners are "not especially gung-ho" about trading for Junior.
  • The Indians DFA’d Jason Tyner.
  • A.J. Pierzynski attempts to dispel all those negative stories about his time with the Giants.

MLB Investigating Salcedo’s Birthdate

By Tim Dierkes | March 27, 2008 at 2:09pm CDT

Baseball America’s Ben Badler has the latest on 16 year-old Dominican shortstop Edward Salcedo.  He says MLB is currently investigating Salcedo’s birthdate (not an uncommon practice).  Scott Boras and Co. represent the kid, but they’re not talking.  There were rumors he’d signed with the Tribe, but the Indians said two weeks ago that it wasn’t true.  Badler adds that Salcedo rejected a $2.5MM offer from the Giants and the D’Backs may be interested.  Badler also writes:

Adding to the intrigue is Major League Baseball’s recent firing of three investigators in the Dominican, including one who was working on Salcedo’s case.

MLB’s Latin operations manager says the firings are unrelated to the Salcedo case.
