Tigers Sign Crowe, Carrera, Sanchez

By Steve Adams | January 9, 2014 at 11:47am CDT

The Tigers announced today that they will invite 16 non-roster players to Major League Spring Training, including outfielders Trevor Crowe and Ezequiel Carrera and right-hander Eduardo Sanchez.

Crowe, 30, was selected 14th overall by the Indians in the 2005 draft. The switch-hitter spent the 2013 season with the Astros organization. A .304/.364/.368 batting line in 60 minor league games earned him a shot with the big league club, but Crowe batted just .218/.287/.291 in 181 Major League plate appearances. Though he has 888 Major League innings in center field, he has a -19.3 UZR/150 mark there for his career to go along with a -3 Defensive Runs Saved total. He does have positive defensive marks at each corner outfield position.

Carrera, 26, is also a product of the Indians organization, though he spent a month with the Phillies last season after being claimed on waivers. Cleveland claimed him back from Philadelphia exactly one month after losing the fleet-footed outfielder. Carrera had three hits in 21 big league plate appearances last season and owns a career .251/.306/.339 batting line in 405 Major League plate appearances. He's also stolen 18 bases in 24 tries. Most of his 2013 campaign was spent in Triple-A Columbus, where he has a career line of .275/.340/.365 with 124 stolen bases in 389 games.

Sanchez, 24, made an impressive Major League debut with the Cardinals in 2011, posting a 1.80 ERA with 10.5 K/9 and 4.8 BB/9 in 30 innings of relief. His high walk rate got the best of him, however, as he's walked 18 batters in just 21 1/3 big league innings since (coming between the Cardinals and Cubs). Sanchez spent most of 2013 in the Cubs organization, and although he posted a solid 3.38 ERA in 40 innings at Triple-A, he also averaged 5.2 walks per nine innings.

White Sox Claim Mike McDade

By Tim Dierkes | May 7, 2013 at 1:10pm CDT

The White Sox claimed first baseman Mike McDade off waivers from the Indians, according to the Tribe's official Twitter feed.  They also announced outfielder Ezequiel Carrera cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A.  The White Sox made room for McDade on the 40-man roster by putting Gavin Floyd on the 60-day DL, adds Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune.

McDade, 24, had been designated for assignment by the Indians last Thursday to open a 40-man roster spot for Carrera, who was designated himself three days later.  McDade has struggled in 83 Triple-A plate appearances this year.  The Las Vegas native came up through the Blue Jays' system, hitting .285/.360/.445 with 19 home runs in 508 plate appearances across Double and Triple-A last year.  Drafted by the Jays in the sixth round in '07, McDade never ranked among the Baseball America's top 30 prospects for the team in any season.

Indians Designate Ezequiel Carrera For Assignment

By Zachary Links | May 5, 2013 at 11:32am CDT

The Indians announced that they have designated outfielder Ezequiel Carrera for assignment.  In a related move, the Tribe recalled left-hander Scott Barnes from Triple-A Columbus.

The move marks the second time that Carrera has been designated for assignment by Cleveland this season.  For those of you keeping track of the 25-year-old's travels, Carrera was DFA'd by the Tribe and went to the Phillies before winding back up with the Indians.

Carrera had three hits in 21 plate appearances for the Indians and Phillies this year.  In parts of three big league seasons, Carrera owns a .251/.306/.339 slash line with two homers.  He's fared better at the Triple-A level where he has hit .286/.351/.372 across three seasons.

Indians Claim Carrera, Designate McDade

By charliewilmoth | May 2, 2013 at 5:03pm CDT

The Indians have claimed outfielder Ezequiel Carrera from Philadelphia, according to the Phillies. The Indians tweet that they have designated first baseman Mike McDade for assignment to make room for Carrera.

Carrera, 25, went 1-for-13 in seven games with the Phillies. He has 362 career at bats, mostly with the Indians, in which he's hit .249/.304/.337. The Phillies designated him for assignment on Tuesday after claiming him from the Indians in April.

McDade had been hitting .230/.305/.284 for Triple-A Columbus, but he hit .285/.360/.445 in the Blue Jays system in 2012. The Indians claimed him off waivers in November.

Phillies Designate Ezequiel Carrera For Assignment

By Zachary Links | April 30, 2013 at 12:24pm CDT

The Phillies announced that they have designated Ezequiel Carrera for assignment.  The move will allow the Phillies to activate outfielder Delmon Young from the 15-day disabled list.

Carrera, 25, was claimed off of waivers from the Indians earlier this month.  The left-handed hitting outfielder has 129 big league games to his credit with a slash line of .249/.304/.337 across the last three seasons.  Carrera has also spent parts of the last three seasons at the Triple-A level where he has hit .286/.351/.372.

Phillies Claim Ezequiel Carrera Off Waivers

By Zachary Links | April 2, 2013 at 1:44pm CDT

The Phillies announced that they have claimed outfielder Ezequiel Carrera off of waivers from the Indians.  To make room on the 40-man roster, the Phillies have designated fellow outfielder Ender Inciarte for assignment.

Carrera, 25, has appeared in 116 big league games for the Indians across the last two seasons, posting a .255/.306/.347 slash line.  He has spent parts of the last three seasons at the Triple-A level where he has hit .286/.351/.372.  Carrera first came to Cleveland by way of Seattle in the deal that sent Russell Branyan to the M's.

Inciarte, 22, was plucked from the Diamondbacks in the Rule 5 draft by the Phillies in December.  The youngster, who is said to be strong defensively but lacking a major league-ready bat, split time between Class-A and Advanced-A ball in 2012.  Last season, he had a combined slash line of .307/.376/.421

Indians Designate Ezequiel Carrera For Assignment

By Steve Adams | March 25, 2013 at 6:42pm CDT

The Indians announced that Ezequiel Carrera has been designated for assignment in order to clear roster space for non-roster invitee Jason Giambi, who has made the club (Twitter link). The Indians announced that Giambi, an Article XX(B) free agent, made the roster recently, but the original plan was to transfer Frank Herrmann to the 60-day disabled list.

Earlier today, it was reported that the Tribe would look to trade Carrera and lefty David Huff, both of whom are out of options and will not make the Opening Day roster.

Carrera, 25, has hit .255/.306/.347 with 18 stolen bases in 24 attempts in 116 career games for Cleveland. The left-handed hitting outfielder has mixed defensive reviews in a small 860-inning sample size, as UZR/150 pegs him at 2.2 runs below average while The Fielding Bible gives him credit for being two runs above average. He's played primarily center field but also has experience at both corner positions. It was reported in late February that the Indians could very likely end up trading Carrera near the end of Spring Training.

Indians Will Look To Trade Huff, Carrera

By Steve Adams | March 25, 2013 at 4:55pm CDT

The Indians have informed outfielder Ezequiel Carrera and left-hander David Huff that they will not make the club out of Spring Training, and that the team will try to trade them, Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reports (via Twitter). Both players are out of minor league options.

Huff, 28, was selected in the supplemental round (39th overall) by the Indians in the 2006 draft. He's appeared in 55 games (52 starts) for the Tribe over parts of four seasons, accumulating 285 1/3 innings but posting unsightly ratios including a 5.30 ERA, 5.0 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9. He's averaged 90.5 mph on his heater and posted a 36.5 percent ground-ball rate throughout his career.

Central Notes: Gomez, Chapman, Choate, Indians

By Mark Polishuk | March 14, 2013 at 11:28pm CDT

It was on this day in 1932 that the Reds and Dodgers swung a very notable trade.  Clyde Sukeforth, Tony Cuccinello and Joe Stripp went to Brooklyn while Cincinnati acquired Babe Herman, Wally Gilbert and a then-23-year-old catcher named Ernie Lombardi.  Needless to say, this deal ended up being a big win for the Reds — Lombardi spent the bulk (10 years) of his Hall of Fame career in Cincinnati and hit .311/.359/.469 and 120 homers with the club.  Lombardi won two batting titles during his career, and was the last catcher to lead the NL in average until Buster Posey last season.

Here are some items from around both the NL and AL Central…

  • Carlos Gomez's three-year, $24MM extension with the Brewers "isn't likely to be a stinker" for the club, Fangraphs' Eno Sarris writes, and it could be a bargain if Gomez's power and ability to hit right-handed pitching continue to develop.
  • An opposing NL scout tells FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal that the Reds "are crazy" if they use Aroldis Chapman as a starter.  "It’s Joba Chamberlain all over again.  His velocity dropped off in the second inning. He couldn’t get his off-speed stuff over the plate consistently. No question in my mind, he’s the closer," the scout said.  Meanwhile, Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News talked to several other scouts about Chapman and they were "nearly unanimous" that he is a better fit as a closer.  Keep following @CloserNews on Twitter for all the latest updates on the Reds and other ninth-inning situations from around baseball.
  • Randy Choate talks about his career and his development into a left-handed relief specialist with Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.  Choate signed a three-year, $7.5MM deal with the Cardinals in December.
  • Ryan Raburn may have the edge on winning a bench job with the Indians at the expense of Ezequiel Carrera, MLB.com's Jordan Bastian opines.  Bastian thinks the Tribe could try to deal Carrera in such a scenario since he is out of options and would probably be claimed off waivers by another team.  Here is the full list of out of options players who could be facing a roster crunch by the end of Spring Training.
  • Earlier today on MLBTR, we heard about the Tigers weighing their trade options, while Ben Nicholson-Smith covered the Tigers' winter moves as part of our Offseason In Review series.

Central Notes: Hunter, Carrera, Morneau, Taveras

By Steve Adams | February 25, 2013 at 9:51pm CDT

On this day in 2007, the Twins signed Liam Hendriks as an amateur free agent out of Australia. Hendriks, 24, has struggled in the Majors to date but owns a solid minor league track record. He has twice cracked Baseball America's list of Top 10 Twins prospects and boasts a 2.95 ERA, 6.5 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 in 155 2/3 Triple-A innings. He'll fight for a rotation spot with the Twins this Spring. Here are some links pertaining to baseball's two Central divisions…

  • New Tigers right fielder Torii Hunter told ESPN's Jayson Stark that his comments about the Angels and owner Arte Moreno following the Josh Hamilton signing were a "joke that went bad." At the time, Hunter tweeted that Moreno must have had "some money under a mattress," as he'd been told the team couldn't afford him. Hunter praised the Angels' organization and said he's enjoying his time with the Tigers so far.
  • The Indians could look to trade outfielder Ezequiel Carrera near the end of Spring Training, writes MLB.com's Jordan Bastian. Carrera is out of options, and the Tribe has no doubt that they would lose the 25-year-old if they placed him on waivers in an attempt to send him to Triple-A.
  • Former AL MVP Justin Morneau couldn't have picked a better time to get healthy, writes Phil Mackey of 1500 ESPN. The 31-year-old Twins slugger is set to hit free agency following the season and could find himself a midseason trade candidate, extension candidate, or the recipient of a qualifying offer with a strong, healthy season.
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports wonders if Cardinals top prospect Oscar Taveras could be the next 20-year-old to take the Majors by storm. Taveras, however, doesn't have a clear path to the Majors given the presence of Matt Holliday, Jon Jay and Carlos Beltran.
