Joey Gathright

Odds & Ends: Belliard, Nats, Looper, Gathright

By Zachary Links | March 12, 2010 at 9:07pm CDT

Friday night linkage..

  • Dodgers second baseman Ronnie Belliard has still yet to make weight, tweets Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times.  Upon re-signing him to a one year deal, the club asked that the veteran weigh no more than 209 pounds by the start of Spring Training.
  • In his latest mailbag, MLB.com's Bill Ladson writes that the Nationals are trying to trade for a top-of-the-rotation starter.
  • El Lefty Malo implores the Giants to ink free agent pitcher Braden Looper as Madison Bumgarner continues to struggle in Spring Training.  You can read up on Looper and the other remaining starters in Ben's post from earlier today.
  • With a good showing this spring, Joey Gathright has a solid chance of making the Blue Jays' roster, says Jordan Bastian of MLB.com.  The soon-to-be 29-year-old has hit .263./.327/.303 for his career with a UZR/150 of 10.3 in the outfield.

Blue Jays Sign Joey Gathright, Raul Chavez

By Luke Adams 2 | December 13, 2009 at 12:23pm CDT

The Toronto Blue Jays have signed Joey Gathright and Raul Chavez to minor league deals, according to MLB.com's Jordan Bastian.

The Blue Jays just non-tendered Chavez yesterday, so it didn't take long for them to get him back off the market. As for Gathright, his agent denied earlier in the week that the speedy outfielder had signed with the Jays. According to Bastian though, the deal is now in place. Both players will receive spring training invites.

Bastian also tweets that the Jays agreed to terms with arbitration-eligible players Jose Bautista ($2.4MM) and Dustin McGowan ($500K).

Joey Gathright Remains Unsigned

By Mike Axisa | December 10, 2009 at 7:57am CDT

7:57am: Gathright's agency, Reynolds Sports Management, tells us via email that the outfielder has not signed.

5:27am: Bob Elliott of The Toronto Sun reports that the Blue Jays have signed speedy outfielder Joey Gathright.

The 28-year-old Gathright is a career .263/.327/.303 hitter in the big leagues, and has spent the better part of his baseball life bouncing between Triple-A and the Majors. Gathright just needs to hook on with the Yankees one of these years to complete the AL East quintuple crown.

Nick Green, Joey Gathright Become Free Agents

By Mike Axisa | November 9, 2009 at 11:02am CDT

According to WEEI.com's Alex Speier, both Nick Green and Joey Gathright elected to become free agents after the Red Sox outrighted them off the 40-man roster late last week.

Green, 31, hit .236/.303/.366 in 309 plate appearances in 2009, holding down Boston's shortstop gig for much of the season. Speier mentions that Green will have surgery on his back today to correct a disc and nerve problem.

The 28-year-old Gathright received just 32 plate appearances with the Cubs and Sox this season, but made Boston's postseason roster as a pinch-runner specialist.

Cubs Sign Joey Gathright

By Tim Dierkes | December 16, 2008 at 11:37am CDT

TUESDAY: The Cubs have signed Gathright to a one-year deal, according to Carrie Muskat.  The Chicago Sun-Times says it’s an $800K deal.  The speedy outfielder has a career line of .263/.328/.304 in 1296 plate appearances.  Perhaps the signing will lead to a trade of Felix Pie, who is out of options.

MONDAY: Word from WSCR 670 in Chicago is that the Cubs will sign outfielder Joey Gathright.  We’ve heard the same from a source.  Gathright, 28 in April, was non-tendered by the Royals on Friday.

Royals Rumors: German, Furcal, Farnsworth

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 13, 2008 at 10:26am CDT

Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star has the latest on the Royals.

  • The Royals signed Esteban German to a one-year deal.
  • If they’re going to sign Rafael Furcal, club officials say they’d have to trade away Jose Guillen to free-up money, yet there was “scant interest” in Guillen at the Winter Meetings.
  • However, the Royals are willing to offer Furcal a four-year deal, something the Dodgers have been reluctant to do.
  • The Kyle Farnsworth deal includes a club option for 2011.
  • Royals GM Dayton Moore insists that Mark Teahen is staying put.
  • Their payroll is down to $70MM after non-tendering John Bale, Joey Gathright, Jason Smith and Jairo Cuevas.

Willy Taveras Will Be Non-Tendered

By Tim Dierkes | December 12, 2008 at 9:35am CDT

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post says to expect outfielder Willy Taveras to join the free agent market:

The Nationals’ unwillingness to take Taveras and Juan Morillo for Tim Redding — a deal Colorado thought was done — will lead the Rockies to non-tender the center fielder today, making him a free agent.

Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News agrees he’ll be non-tendered, noting the Yankees, Red Sox, Reds, Marlins, and White Sox also had trade discussions for Taveras.

Renck adds that Glendon Rusch has a minor league offer for $750K in hand, and is weighing offers from four other clubs.  Rusch would be the Rockies’ second lefty behind newly signed Alan Embree.

A few more notes: the Rockies have mild interest in bringing back Josh Fogg…they’re the favorite for Redding if he’s non-tendered too…the Rox will make a non-guaranteed offer to Scott Podsednik…Joey Gathright would be of interest if non-tendered.

Odds and Ends: Garcia, Greene, DeJesus

By Tim Dierkes | November 9, 2007 at 1:40pm CDT

With so many rumors, there’s a need for a daily Odds and Ends post to catch ’em all.

  • Buster Olney talked to Freddy Garcia’s agent.  He’s looking at a June return from shoulder surgery.
  • Indians GM Mark Shapiro made an offer on Brad Lidge.  The Astros didn’t even reply.  They did hear back from the Marlins on their Miguel Cabrera inquiry.  The price is seemingly too high for talks to continue.  Peter Gammons says that before the Astros got Michael Bourn, the White Sox pushed for a Chad Qualls for Ryan Sweeney swap.
  • Evan Grant notes that the Rangers have discussed trading shortstop Joaquin Arias to the Royals for Joey Gathright.  They’ve also talked to the Brewers about Tony Gwynn Jr.  GM Jon Daniels needs to have options if he can’t afford Torii Hunter or the other free agents.  Grant adds that the Rangers have already been in touch with Kerry Wood.
  • Jose Guillen declined his $5MM option with the Mariners – that’s no surprise.  So far the Royals have expressed interest.
  • Khalil Greene is under the Padres’ control through 2009, but his salary is going to jump significantly in arbitration for the ’08 and ’09 seasons.  The Padres want to sign him to a multiyear deal, perhaps buying out one year of free agency.  GM Kevin Towers is also posturing that he might use Scott Hairston as the regular center fielder next year, which seems a stretch.  Also, Geoff Jenkins is on Towers’ radar.
  • Ed Wade and the Astros have asked the Marlins about Dontrelle Willis.  However the ’Stros probably do not have the goods.’
  • One way or another, the Marlins will ditch Miguel Olivo.  They hope to bring Yorvit Torrealba aboard, which would take an offer better than two years, $6MM.  The Mets, Brewers, and Blue Jays also like Torrealba.  The Marlins are serious about upgrading behind the plate and will spend some money to do so.
  • Jorge Posada seems set on testing the market, which never bodes well for the incumbent team.
  • David DeJesus is a hot commodity as an affordable center fielder, but Dayton Moore expects to hang onto him.  Maybe he’ll change his mind once some big names are off the board.
