John Smoltz

Odds And Ends: Mariners, Rangers, Smoltz

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 8, 2009 at 9:39am CDT

Here are a few links to kick the week off…

  • Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times says the Mariners would risk losing fan interest if they deal players like Erik Bedard before the Mariners fall far out of the playoff race.
  • Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports reports that Rangers GM Jon Daniels is looking to the trade market for a bullpen upgrade.
  • WEEI.com's Rob Bradford reports that John Smoltz is open to pitching out of the bullpen and may be asked to skip occasional starts. This could be one way of managing the starting pitching surplus in Boston.
  • Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle wonders whether Kevin Frandsen, now in Triple A, would be open to starting fresh with a different club.
  • Sam Mellinger of the Kansas City Star believes the Royals are better off than they were a few years ago, but says they'll have trouble realizing their goal of contending in 2010.
  • Michael Hunt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says Tom Glavine isn't good enough to help the Brewers and Jake Peavy isn't cheap enough.

Heyman On Braves, Tejada, Helton

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | June 5, 2009 at 2:40pm CDT

Jon Heyman of SI.com says the Braves gave off the impression that Tom Glavine was merely a "famous, low-priced insurance policy" when they released him two days ago. He has more on the Braves and the rest of the majors; let's take a look:

  • John Smoltz told Heyman that he once turned down $53MM from the Yankees to sign with the Braves for $30MM.
  • The Braves are now unable to add payroll.
  • That could make it tough for them to reacquire Mark DeRosa, who's on the block and would be a nice piece for Atlanta.
  • One executive said Justin Upton has "a lot of Ken Griffey Jr. in him." Check out Tim's Q&A with Upton to see how the former number one pick handles the hype.
  • Miguel Tejada's name has surfaced in trade talks, but most contenders see him as a third baseman and some don't like his bat anymore.
  • The Rockies are willing to discuss dealing "nearly every player" they have. Heyman says "they'd probably love to find someone" to take on Todd Helton's contract. He's owed about $50MM still, so I'd think the chances are slim.

Red Sox Rumors: Bay, Penny, Buchholz

By Tim Dierkes | May 26, 2009 at 10:26am CDT

We have several Red Sox situations up for discussion today.

  • Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe writes of Jason Bay's superstar performance in Boston.  Bay has a .292/.393/.569 line in 407 plate appearances in his Red Sox career.  By comparison, J.D. Drew has a .274/.388/.470 line in 1166 plate appearances spread over 2.28 seasons in Boston.  Says Massarotti: "If and when the time comes, the Red Sox may have a hard time denying Bay the $14 million average they paid Drew — this is one of the more damning aspects of the Drew deal — though that deal was signed in a much different economic climate."
  • Nick Cafardo of the Globe discusses Brad Penny, "one of the most valuable chips in the game."  Penny figures to be one of the five best available starting pitchers available this July, unless the Sox decide they'd rather maintain the depth.  While he cannot be traded without his consent until June 15th, ESPN's Buster Olney figures he would not stand in the way of a trade.  Olney says the Red Sox want a good prospect in return and expects a deal sooner rather than later.
  • How about Clay Buchholz, currently stuck in Triple A?  He took a perfect game into the ninth inning yesterday according to Amalie Benjamin of the Globe.  The 24 year-old needs to be in the Majors, given his 1.30 ERA and 49:12 K/BB ratio in 48.3 innings.  However, the Red Sox have to activate John Smoltz by June 19th.

Odds & Ends: Smoltz, Cubs, Melky, Lima

By Tim Dierkes | March 30, 2009 at 10:55am CDT

Links for Monday…

  • Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle writes about the Giants' lack of interest in Adam Melhuse and considers other players who could help.
  • Alex Speier of WEEI looks back at the Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz trade of 1987.  According to former Tigers GM Bill Lajoie, the Braves would have taken Steve Searcy instead of Smoltz.
  • Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald says the Cubs "appear to be getting some trade feelers" on out of options relievers Chad Gaudin and Angel Guzman.  Moving one could create space for Rule 5 pick David Patton.
  • Tyler Hissey of Around The Majors looks back at the Delmon Young/Matt Garza swap.  What did MLBTR commenters think when the deal went down on November 28th, 2007?  Click here to find out.  Garza will face the Twins for the first time today.
  • Eddie Bajek of Detroit Tigers Thoughts says the Tigers are apparently trying to recreate the bullpen of the 2007 Rays.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post believes Melky Cabrera would be best served as an NL bench player.
  •  T.J. Simers of the L.A. Times discusses the Dodgers' $47MM bust, Jason Schmidt.
  • Aaron Shinsano of East Windup Chronicle has more Korean prospect news: the Royals signed catcher Shin Jin-ho, while the Mariners signed catcher Choi Ji-man.
  • Jose Lima is back playing baseball in the U.S., according to Bill Shaikin of the L.A. Times.
  • Will Sommer of Mets Fans Forever talked to GM Omar Minaya.
  • Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post looks at the Marlins' decision to non-tender reliever Joe Nelson.  It would've made a lot of sense to bring him back.

Stark On Red Sox Offseason Moves

By Cork Gaines | March 10, 2009 at 5:47pm CDT

In his latest column, Jayson Stark weighs in on the moves the Red Sox made this off-season. While Boston did not spend nearly as much as the Yankees, their moves have a ton of upside potential and that no team "had a more underrated offseason than the Red Sox."

  • Stark spoke to one scout that thinks the Red Sox did a better job than the Yankees at filling their needs through free agency.
  • Stark notes that the amount of guaranteed dollars for the Red Sox four free agents (John Smoltz, Brad Penny, Takashi Saito, Rocco Baldelli) is less than what the Yankees will pay AJ Burnett this season.
  • The Red Sox moves also did not leave the team with "long-term inflexibility."
  • One scout believes Smoltz will come back healthy at some point and compares the signing to trading for an impact pitcher at the trade deadline. Stark says the Sox believe $5.5MM for Smoltz is a better gamble than a five- or seven-year deal for "any free-agent pitcher."
  • Stark notes that Penny did not need off-season surgery and one scout says pitching coach John Farrell is the one person that should be able to get the best out of Penny.
  • One scout says that if Saito is healthy, the Red Sox got a steal.
  • Stark says the Red Sox rotation is more "October-ready" than the Yankees, even if the Yankees have the better long-term outlook.

Cork Gaines writes for RaysIndex.com and can be reached here.

Rosenthal On Pedro, A-Rod, Beimel, Ohman

By Tim Dierkes | March 10, 2009 at 9:12am CDT

Here’s the latest from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports…

  • One executive tells Rosenthal Pedro Martinez seeks a contract similar to the one John Smoltz received (a $5.5MM base plus $5.5MM incentives). Rosenthal’s speculative candidates for Pedro include the Dodgers, Marlins, Indians, and Mets.  He says the A’s, Orioles, Nationals, and Brewers are out.
  • Rosenthal does not expect a major acquisition by the Yankees to cover for Alex Rodriguez.  He adds that the Yanks will not collect insurance on A-Rod’s salary.
  • In addition to Orlando Cabrera, Manny Ramirez has a clause in his contract prohibiting his team from offering arbitration if he’s a Type A free agent after the season.  Orlando Hudson and Bobby Abreu do not have such clauses.
  • Two GMs told Rosenthal Joe Beimel wants a one-year, $2.5MM deal, but the pitcher’s agent Joe Sroba says they have’t gotten that specific.  Sroba says new teams are in the mix for Beimel and he’s waiting for one to be "aggressive and sincere in their pursuit."
  • The White Sox and Dodgers are two teams in on free agent lefty Will Ohman.

Odds and Ends: Smoltz, Crede, Burnett

By Tim Dierkes | February 22, 2009 at 6:38pm CDT

A few links for Sunday evening…

  • Chicago Tribune reporters Todd Lighty and Oscar Avila have more info on the David Wilder bonus-skimming scandal.
  • Terence Moore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution talked to John Smoltz recently about players leaving or choosing not to sign with the Braves.
  • SI.com’s Pablo S. Torre digs into Ken Griffey Jr.’s decision.
  • Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel learned that Marlins third baseman Dallas McPherson (42 home runs at Triple A last year) would like 500 at-bats, but a bench role is more likely.  McPherson is out of options.
  • Joe Crede talked about the White Sox going young, but Ozzie Guillen did not agree.
  • Newsday’s Kat O’Brien talked to A.J. Burnett, who was leaning toward the Yankees well before he signed.  He chatted often with Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon this winter.
  • Speaking of Damon, River Ave. Blues points out a passage in Joe Torre’s book about how the Yankees chose Rondell White over him back in ’02.
  • Nationals special assistant Jose Rijo is taking a leave of absence, partially because of the Esmailyn Gonzalez scandal.  ESPN’s Jorge Arangure Jr. has much more on the situation, after talking to Gonzalez/Lugo’s trainer.
  • South Side Sox takes a stab at fixing free agent compensation.
  • Orlando Hudson could’ve had $24MM for 2009-11 if he’d taken an offer the D’Backs made before the ’08 season.  Nick Piecoro says Hudson’s counteroffer was "so unrealistic that it actually upset people with the Diamondbacks."

Odds and Ends: Dunn, Schumaker, Abreu

By Tim Dierkes | February 13, 2009 at 12:07pm CDT

Links for Friday…

  • The Blue Jays signed pitcher Dirk Hayhurst to a minor league deal; they’d released him to make room for Matt Bush.
  • Alex Speier of WEEI has quotes from John Smoltz about his departure from Atlanta. Smoltz leaving the Braves was the biggest surprise of the offseason for me.
  • ESPN’s Jayson Stark surveyed 15 baseball sages for all kinds of opinions on the best and worst of the offseason (which is not officially over yet).
  • Dave Sheinin of the Washington Post has more from the Adam Dunn press conference.
  • Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch sees Skip Schumaker as the Cardinals outfielder most vulnerable to a trade.
  • ESPN’s Keith Law weighs in on the Bobby Abreu signing.
  • Kevin Goldstein’s Top 100 Prospects list is up over at Baseball Prospectus.
  • Scott Moore cleared waivers; he’ll remain in the Orioles organization.
  • My definition of a fantasy baseball sleeper, over at RotoAuthority.

  • The Phillies have "kept tabs" on Cordero and Eric Milton.
  • Baseball America ranked the Rangers’ farm system as the best in baseball.
  • Andy MacPhail says the Orioles don’t necessarily have to add a first baseman.
  • South Side Sox and Sox Machine on the Bartolo Colon signing.
  • Jon Paul Morosi says Jason Isringhausen is a "natural fit" for the Tigers.
  • The Red Sox will only get a supplemental pick for Paul Byrd if he signs before the June draft.

Odds and Ends: Smoltz, Young, Cameron

By Tim Dierkes | January 13, 2009 at 2:00pm CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • Lyle Spencer doesn’t think Michael Young and Jermaine Dye make sense for the Angels.
  • Joel Sherman speculates on some possible matches Young trades.
  • The Marlins’ recent minor league signings, including John Koronka and Jay Gibbons.
  • The Red Sox officially announced the John Smoltz signing today.  Here’s the transcript, and here are the contract terms.
  • Buster Olney debunks the Mike Cameron for Nick Swisher rumor, saying the teams haven’t talked trade since the Winter Meetings.
  • With the ninth pick in a fantasy draft, this is the team I’d put together.
