Mariners Make Free Agent Offer

According to MLB.com’s Jim Street, Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik made an offer to a position player free agent and expects to know more within 24-48 hours.  That free agent is not Ken Griffey Jr., though Zduriencik has talked to his agent.  Any guesses?  One reader emailed wondering if the Ms could be the mystery team for Rafael Furcal.

Alan Embree is also on the radar; he acknowledged that the Mariners were one of ten clubs to express interest with his agent.

Odds and Ends: Gammons, Kawakami, Buck

Griffey Drawing Interest

According to Jim Street of MLB.com, Ken Griffey Jr. is attracting lots of interest already.

Griffey’s agent, Brian Goldberg, told Street that he has been in contact with nine teams regarding his client – six in the American League and three in the National League.  Keep in mind that Goldberg initiated contact with some of these teams.  All of this information was first reported by John Fay on Monday.

Goldberg said that Griffey, who’s open to moving around, won’t price himself out of a job and would consider a contract with incentives.

Goldberg said that Griffey is open to a one-year contract from "the right team in the right place."  The Mariners are one of the nine clubs, but Goldberg contacted them and the response was said to be "polite."

Odds and Ends: Kawakami, Griffey, Greinke

Crasnick On Retirement Candidates

ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick looks at nine veteran players and estimates their chances of retiring.  He assesses the situations of Jim Edmonds, Garret Anderson, Ken Griffey Jr., Cliff Floyd, Jeff Kent, Nomar Garciaparra, Luis Gonzalez, Frank Thomas, and Moises Alou.

Crasnick feels Edmonds, Anderson, Griffey, and Floyd are likely to play, while the rest are not.  Of the long shots, Thomas seems most intent on playing in ’09.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Griffey, Peavy, Dempster

A look at the latest column from FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal:

  • Rosenthal wonders if Jason Varitek‘s viral sickness and divorce last year contributed to his poor performance at the plate.
  • Ken Griffey Jr.‘s wife gave him her blessing to play anywhere he’d like.  If he’s focused on getting a ring, Seattle might not make sense.  Griffey’s doctor believes his knee will be in better shape in 2009.
  • Padres GM Kevin Towers wonders if Jake Peavy would’ve accepted a trade to the Braves, given Atlanta’s club policy against no-trade clauses.  Towers isn’t talking to the Braves, Dodgers, or Yankees about Peavy, and Rosenthal says he’s "not making much headway" with the Cubs.  ESPN’s Peter Gammons says the Cubs’ loss of Jose Ceda lessens their chances, while Frank Wren still believes Peavy will end up a Brave.
  • The Cubs hope to resolve the Ryan Dempster situation this week.  The team wants to do a four-year deal.
  • The Giants are still in on Juan Cruz after their Jeremy Affeldt signing.
  • The Phillies gave Pat Burrell "parameters" for a new deal, while Rosenthal speculates on the Giants and Dodgers as other possible fits.

Stark’s Latest: Abreu, Arroyo, Hudson

ESPN’s Jayson Stark is back with a look at needs and plans for all 30 teams.  I highly recommend you read the article, but here are a few highlights.  He’s also got a fresh blog post here.

  • The Phillies are eyeing Doug Brocail and Russ Springer.
  • The Mets like Bobby Abreu, but not his three year, $45MM asking price.
  • The Reds are quietly listening on Bronson Arroyo, and the Rangers may be interested.
  • Contrary to previous reports, Stark believes the Mets’ first order of business is getting a starting pitcher.
  • Here’s a new one – the Marlins are interested in Orlando Hudson?
  • The Astros may be trying to move money, and Stark implies trading Miguel Tejada or Jose Valverde could be one path.
  • The Rockies have "actively explored" signing Jeremy Affeldt, who could also wind up back home with the Mariners.  A few more interesting names for Seattle: Joe Crede (if Adrian Beltre is traded), Jason Giambi, and Ken Griffey Jr.

Odds & Ends: Amaro, Marte, Griffey

Some Odds & Ends to begin the day:

  • The Phillies are expected to announce Ruben Amaro Jr. as their next General Manager on Monday. Says Ken Mandel of MLB.com, "Amaro, 43, served as a batboy for the Phillies from 1980-83, and played for the Phillies from 1992-93 and 1996-98. He moved into the front office after retiring as a player." As the clubs Assistant General Manager, he’s been the heir apparent to the 71-year-old Pat Gillick as GM.
  • The Yankees are expected to decline Damaso Marte‘s $6MM option, according to George King III of the New York Post. Marte made $2MM this year and the Yankees are opting to buy him out for $250,000. I expect them to make an attempt to sign him to a new contract but no details yet.
  • Larry Stone of the Seattle Times says Ken Griffey Jr. is open to returing to Seattle. No comment from M’s new GM Jack Zduriencik.

Junior Would Return To Seattle

According to Larry Stone of the Seattle Times, Ken Griffey Jr. is open to returning to the Mariners as a free agent. Griffey’s agent, Brian Goldberg, said that his client is “open minded” about returning to play in Seattle, where he played for 11 seasons.

Goldberg added that Griffey wants to talk with the White Sox about returning to play in Chicago. The White Sox declined Griffey’s $16MM option this week.

Griffey, who hit .249/.353/.424 last year, has said that he wants to play for three more seasons.

What’s Next For Ken Griffey Jr.?

According to Scot Gregor of the Daily Herald, Ken Griffey Jr. said he wants to play three more seasons.  Junior is a free agent now, and the White Sox will probably not re-sign him. Though Griffey is a Type B free agent, the Sox probably won’t risk offering him arbitration.

Could Griffey finish his career back with the Mariners?  It’s not known if interest is mutual, as Ms GM Jack Zduriencik would not comment.  Griffey, 39, hit .249/.353/.424 in 575 plate appearances this year.  Larry LaRue offers commentary on the Griffey idea in a blog post.
