Red Sox Acquire Pablo Reyes

The Red Sox have acquired infielder Pablo Reyes from Oakland in exchange for cash considerations, the A’s have announced. Reyes had signed with Oakland on a minor league deal this past offseason.

The 29-year-old Reyes has appeared in parts of four seasons since making his MLB debut with the Pirates in 2018. That year, he hit well in 18 games for the Pirates, slashing .293/.349/.483 with a wRC+ of 126. That showing earned him an expanded role with the club in 2019, though he ultimately struggled over 157 plate appearances with the club to a slash line of just .203/.274/.322 that led the club to designate him for assignment in January of 2020. The following month, Reyes was served an 80-game suspension for PEDs, causing him to miss the entire pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Reyes latched on with the Brewers on a minor league deal ahead of the 2021 season, ultimately sticking with the club for two seasons. During that time, he slashed .258/.330/.344 with a wRC+ of 85 in 103 plate appearances before electing free agency after the 2022 season and signing with the A’s, for whom he did not appear in a major league game.

In addition to his time in the majors, Reyes has spent parts of 11 seasons in the minor leagues, including 1,265 plate appearances at Triple-A, which have resulted in a slash line of .274/.350/.419 at the highest minor league level. Much of Reyes’s value comes from his versatility, as the journeyman has appeared at every position on the diamond except for catcher.

Reyes figures to serve as infield depth in the upper minors for a Red Sox club that has struggled to keep players healthy in the middle infield this season. Infielders Trevor Story, Adalberto Mondesi, Yu Chang, Christian Arroyo, and center fielder Adam Duvall are all currently on the injured list after being penciled in for regular playing time up the middle for the Red Sox at one point or another.

Athletics, Pablo Reyes Agree To Minor League Deal

The A’s have agreed to a minor league contract with infielder/outfielder Pablo Reyes, per Baseball America’s Chris Hilburn-Trenkle. Presumably, the deal includes an invite to Major League Spring Training, though the team has not formally announced the deal or indicated as much. Reyes was outrighted by the Brewers last month and subsequently became a minor league free agent.

Reyes, 29, has appeared in parts of four Major League seasons, logging time with the 2018-19 Pirates and the 2021-22 Brewers. He’s appeared in 147 Major League games, tallied 323 trips to the plate and posted a combined .238/.307/.361 batting line in that time. Along the way, he’s played 355 innings in the outfield (mostly in the corners but 68 innings in center), 171 innings at third base, 54 innings at second base and 47 innings at shortstop.

While Reyes received just 16 Major League plate appearances in 2022 (going 4-for-15 in that short stint), he enjoyed a solid year in Triple-A Nashville, batting .273/.348/.439 (110 wRC+) with 11 home runs, 27 doubles, a pair of triples and 15 steals. Reyes has fanned in 15.5% of his Triple-A plate appearances across the past two seasons, showing a good knack for contact, and has also walked at a 9.2% rate.

Reyes is out of minor league options, so if he earns a spot on the big league roster with the A’s at any point, he’ll need to stick or else be placed on waivers before he can be sent back to the minors. He’ll have to vie for a job in Spring Training and perhaps early in the season in Triple-A, but his right-handed bat could be a natural complement to a platoon-heavy A’s club that’ll feature lefties like Tony Kemp, Seth Brown and perhaps some combination of Vimael Machin, Cody Thomas, Cal Stevenson and Conner Capel. In 134 Major League plate appearances against lefties, Reyes is a .276/.336/.480 hitter.

Brewers Outright Pablo Reyes To Triple-A, Re-Sign Andruw Monasterio

The Brewers have outrighted utilityman Pablo Reyes to Triple-A, according to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (Twitter link).  Milwaukee also re-signed infielder Andruw Monasterio to a minor league contract that contains an invitation to the Major League Spring Training camp.

Since Reyes was previously outrighted (as a member of the Pirates organization in 2020), he has the right to reject the Brewers’ assignment and become a free agent.  If he opts to remain, Reyes would be heading into his season in Milwaukee, after first signing a minors contract with the Brew Crew in the 2020-21 offseason.  He appeared in 53 big league games with Milwaukee in 2021, but made only five MLB appearances in 2022.

Reyes has mostly been used as a bench player and late game defensive fill-in, owing to his versatility — he has played every position except first base and catcher over his 147 career Major League games with the Pirates and Brewers.  Reyes has a .238/.307/.361 slash line over 323 plate appearances, as a nice initial burst at the plate during his 63-PA rookie season has failed to continue beyond the 2018 campaign.

The 25-year-old Monasterio has hit .264/.344/.355 over 2582 career PA in the minors, breaking in as a 17-year-old with the Cubs in 2014.  2022 was his first season in Milwaukee’s farm system, and he hit .271/.364/.406 over 437 combined PA at the Double-A and Triple-A levels.  The infielder has been involved in two prominent trades during his career, going from the Cubs to the Nationals as part of the Daniel Murphy swap in August 2018, and then going from Washington to Cleveland a few months later as part of the Yan Gomes trade package.

Brewers Place Christian Yelich, Jace Peterson On COVID List

The Brewers have placed Christian Yelich and Jace Peterson on the COVID-related injury list, president of baseball operations David Stearns told MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy (Twitter links).  Yelich has tested positive for COVID-19 while Peterson is on the list due to contact tracing.  Stearns noted that Yelich had already been fully vaccinated and is exhibiting mild symptoms, though the outfielder is expected to be back after the mandatory 10-day quarantine period.

To fill the two open roster spots, Lorenzo Cain is being activated off the 10-day injured list and Pablo Reyes was called up from Triple-A.  Cain was expected to return from the IL today, following an absence of almost two months while recovering from a hamstring strain.

The most important news is that Yelich is feeling relatively good following his positive test, though the former NL MVP will now be sidelined for the third time this season.  Yelich had two earlier IL placements due to back problems, costing him close to five weeks’ worth of action.  This nagging back issue has bothered Yelich for a few years, contributing to his below-average performance since the start of the 2020 season.  After his last 522 plate appearances, Yelich has hit .221/.370/.397 — a far cry from his .327/.415/.631 slash line over 1231 PA in 2018-19.

The Brewers are known to be looking for hitting help prior to the trade deadline, and losing Yelich will only add to the team’s search.  Peterson has also been a good addition to the roster over 50 games 161 PA this season, hitting .244/.373/.397 (good for a 109 OPS+ and 113 wRC+) after signing a minor league deal with Milwaukee this past winter.

It isn’t known what Cain will be able to provide after his second IL trip of the season, and the veteran has mostly been an offensive non-factor since the start of the 2019 season.  Cain has hit only .256/.327/.369 over his last 762 PA, as he has been hampered by multiple injuries and also elected to sit out much of the 2020 season.

Dodgers Claim Bobby Wahl Off Waivers

2:15 PM: The Dodgers have claimed Wahl off waivers, per Jorge Castillo of the LA Times (via Twitter). To make room on the 40-man roster, they moved Corey Seager to the 60-day injured list. He will not, therefore, return to the team before July 15.

11:08 AM: As expected, the Brewers have selected the contract of Aaron Ashby to make his Major League debut in today’s game against the Cubs. Pablo Reyes was optioned to Triple-A to make room on the active roster, and Bobby Wahl was designated for assignment, the team announced. The latter move was necessary to add Ashby to the 40-man roster.

Wahl, 29, will be exposed to waiver claim by any of the game’s other 29 teams. He made three appearances for the Brewers last season, but Wall has yet to appear in a game at the big-league level this season. He’s appeared in 13 games at Triple-A, however, struggling to a 9.58 ERA over that span. He has, at least, flashed some strikeout ability, striking out 18 over 10 1/3 innings. The Brewers acquired from the Mets in 2019 as part of the Keon Broxton trade.

As for Reyes, the 27-year-old infielder/outfielder has slashed .224/.240/.265 line in 50 plate appearances. The former Pirate has fared much better in 49 trips in Triple-A, with a triple slash line of .350/.449/.600. The Brewers will be down to a four-man bench for today, so Reyes could return shortly.

Brewers Designate Billy McKinney, Option Pablo Reyes

The Brewers designated outfielder Billy McKinney for assignment and optioned infielder/outfielder Pablo Reyes to Triple-A.  The moves created roster space for Willy Adames and Trevor Richards, both acquired in yesterday’s trade with the Rays.  Righty Alec Bettinger was also called up from Triple-A.

McKinney was initially seen a possible DFA candidate during Spring Training since he is out of options and the Brewers ostensibly had a crowded outfield, but several injuries resulted in McKinney receiving quite a bit of playing time.  McKinney appeared in 40 games and hit .207/.260/.359 in an even 100 plate appearances, mostly working as a left fielder but also seeing action in nine games as a first baseman.

Once a top-100 prospect, McKinney is still just 26, and he has played for five different organizations.  Considering his value as a bench player, it’s quite possible another team plucks him off the DFA wire.  Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said as much to reporters (including MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy) today, noting that “Billy did a nice job for us and he’s probably going to be tough to keep moving forward here.  He’s got a good chance to get claimed [off waivers] probably.“

Brewers Select Pablo Reyes

The Brewers have selected the contract of utility player Pablo Reyes and optioned outfielder Corey Ray, the team announced.

A member of the Pittsburgh organization from 2012-20, Reyes joined the Brewers on a minor league deal this past winter. An 80-game suspension for performance-enhancing drugs wiped out Reyes’ 2020 season, but he did see major league action in each of the previous two campaigns. The 27-year-old made an impressive debut over 63 plate appearances in 2018, but his production plummeted across a much larger sample size (157 PA) the next season. Overall, Reyes has batted .229/.295/.368 with five home runs in 220 trips to the plate at the game’s highest level.

Defensively, Reyes has played both middle infield positions, third base and all three outfield spots in the majors. Even if Reyes doesn’t hit well, he’ll at least give the Brewers a defensively versatile option off their bench.

Central Notes: Cubs, White Sox, Brewers, Pirates

The Cubs will welcome fans back to Wrigley Field in 2021, the team announced today. They have been approved by the city to fill the stadium to 20 percent capacity, beginning on opening day. “In coordination with MLB, top health experts and local officials, we developed a comprehensive plan that prioritizes the health and safety of our players, staff and fans,” said Cubs President of Business Operations Crane Kenney. “Our goal is to create a safe, clean and friendly environment for everyone to enjoy Cubs baseball beginning Opening Day.” The Cubs will require masks for patrons two-years-old and above while hosting pod-style seating and practicing social distancing.

On the other side of town, the White Sox will be allowed up to 8,122 patrons per game while practicing social distancing, per Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times (via Twitter). The Southsiders home opener will be on April 8th. That means every team except for the Blue Jays will have at least a limited number of fans in the seats this season, notes Bob Nightengale of USA Today.   • The Brewers are facing a roster crunch at the end of the bench. It’s a side effect of the Jackie Bradley Jr. signing, writes MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy. Pablo Reyes and Derek Fisher have impressed manager Craig Counsell so far, notes McCalvy. Manny Pina and Avisail Garcia are locks to be a member of the bench, which probably only leaves two spots. Assuming Travis Shaw makes the roster, that puts one of Shaw, Orlando Arcia, and Luis Urias on the bench as well. Daniel Robertson has been viewed as a favorite to win that final bench spot, in part because the infielder is out of options. Daniel Vogelbach is also out of options and on the 40-man roster. The big first baseman brings a limited, though valuable skill-set as a power bat off the bench. Of those players on the 40-man roster, Fisher, Jace Pederson, and Billy McKinney are also out of options, giving the Brewers much to think about as we inch closer to April 1.
  • Milwaukee may have a little bit of extra time to decide on that final roster spot, however. Lorenzo Cain hasn’t played in a week because of a quad issue, and there’s a chance he won’t be ready in time for opening day, per McCalvy (via Twitter). There’s still hope that he’ll be ready from the jump, but if not, the Brewers could roll with Bradley Jr. in center and Garcia in right, while taking the extra time to evaluate someone from their out-of-options pool.
  • Pirates manager Derek Shelton won’t spend much time thinking about who might claim the closer role until the last few days of camp, per the Athletic’s Rob Biertempfel. Said Shelton, “We have a guy who we know can go to the back end and do it in Richie (Rodríguez), who did it last year, so I’m really not thinking about it.” That certainly sounds like Richard Rodriguez has the inside track on the job. There will certainly be enough bodies to choose from, as the Pirates plan to break camp with eight or nine relievers, notes Biertempfel. That said, there aren’t a lot of proven late-inning options to immediately wrench the role from Rodríguez. Kyle Crick is the most obvious challenger, with Chris Stratton perhaps snagging an opportunity or two after striking out close to 30 percent of hitters last season.

Brewers Sign Pablo Reyes To Minor League Deal

The Brewers have signed utilityman Pablo Reyes to a minor league contract, according to MLB.com’s Adam McCalvy (Twitter link).  The deal contains an invite to Milwaukee’s big league spring camp.

Reyes didn’t play during the 2020 season due to an 80-game PED suspension issued in February.  He elected to become a free agent after the season, ending a nine-year stint as a member of the Pirates organization.  After initially signing as a minor league free agent with the Bucs in 2012, Reyes hit .278/.351/.421 over 2587 plate appearances in Pittsburgh’s farm system.

This solid bat and the ability to play all over the field (though Reyes was mostly a shortstop and second baseman in the minors) got Reyes a look at the MLB level in both 2018 and 2019.  Debuting with a strong .832 OPS over 63 PA in 2018, Reyes struggled at the plate in 2019, hitting only .203/.274/.322 in 157 plate appearances while also missing about a month of action due to an ankle injury.  Reyes spent much of his time on the Pirates’ active roster as an outfielder.

The Brewers often prioritize multi-positional players, so the Reyes signing gives the team another versatile option to consider heading into Spring Training.  Reyes is a right-handed hitter, which could make it a bit of an uphill battle for him to break camp considering the Brewers already have quite a bit of right-handed depth.

Pirates’ Pablo Reyes Suspended 80 Games For PED Violation

Pirates infielder/outfielder Pablo Reyes has been suspended 80 games after testing positive for the banned substance Boldenone, Major League Baseball announced on Wednesday. Reyes was designated for assignment by the Pirates and sent outright to Triple-A Indianapolis last month.

Reyes, 26, has seen action with the Pirates in each of the past two seasons but struggled in 2019 after an intriguing debut in 2018. Overall, he’s mustered only a .229/.295/.368 slash in 220 plate appearances as a big leaguer. That said, Reyes also carries a solid .281/.341/.471 line through 589 plate appearances in his Triple-A career. Today’s PED revelation and last year’s league-wide offensive explosion in Triple-A will cause many to question the legitimacy of that production, however. Reyes missed about a month of the 2019 season due to an ankle injury.

Having been outrighted off the roster, Reyes was already facing an uphill battle to make it back to the big leagues. Now, with a half-season suspension for a performance-enhancing substance, his road to a second tour of duty in the Majors is all the longer.
