Rosenthal On Mets & Phillies

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 1, 2009 at 1:42pm CDT

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports spoke with two NL East GMs about the state of their teams a month into the season. Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. addressed his team's pitching:

  • Amaro expects pitchers Brett Myers, Joe Blanton and Chan Ho Park to improve. If not, Amaro says "we'll be open to other options."
  • Rosenthal expects the Phillies to look internally for rotation help before making any deal. J.A. Happ, Carlos Carrasco, Rodrigo Lopez or Kyle Kendrick could could be asked to start.
  • Rosenthal adds that the Phillies' greatest need will be a reliever if Brad Lidge remains sidelined.

Mets GM Omar Minaya took stock of his team, which is now 9-12.

  • Asked if the Mets are pursuing Pedro Martinez, Minaya said "not right now."
  • Minaya suggested the Mets will dabble in any big name that surfaces on the trade market.
  • Payroll could become an issue for the Mets, who have already committed $149MM to the team.
  • Rosenthal writes that the Mets "look like they blew it" when they decided to sign Oliver Perez instead of offering Derek Lowe a fourth year.
  • Minaya said Gary Sheffield and Alex Cora bring an "edge" to the team that Jose Reyes and David Wright lack.

The Dodgers’ Rotation

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | May 1, 2009 at 1:11pm CDT

They're 15-8, in first place in the NL West, but the Dodgers face questions about a rotation that includes three ERAs of 5.50 or more. Behind Chad Billingsley and Randy Wolf, they have Clayton Kershaw, who hasn't pitched out the the fifth inning his last two starts, James McDonald, who has walked a batter an inning this year, and Eric Stults, who's allowing two baserunners an inning. Yahoo's Tim Brown takes stock of the rotation and how Ned Colletti will progress with it.

  • Brown says it's unlikely the Dodgers will add Pedro Martinez, Paul Byrd, Odalis Perez or Freddy Garcia.
  • One scout's analysis: "There's plenty of pitching available. None you'd want."
  • Brown suggests the Dodgers need a club like the Indians, Reds or Mariners to fall from contention so some quality arms become available.
  • If David Price pitches his way into the Rays' rotation, Jeff Niemann could become trade bait.

The Dodgers could rely on pitchers already in the organization. Hiroki Kuroda is rehabbing, though MLB.com's Ken Gurnick reports the righty is likely weeks away from a return. Jason Schmidt is rehabbing too, according to Gurnick. Jeff Weaver pitched well against the Padres last night and Eric Milton and Shawn Estes are stashed away in the minors.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Pedro, Byrd, Ibanez, Figgins

By Cork Gaines | May 1, 2009 at 8:41am CDT

On this date three years ago, the Red Sox traded for Doug Mirabelli to be Tim Wakefield's personal catcher. Mirabelli had to put his uniform on in the car from the airport and arrived 13 minutes prior to first pitch against the Yankees. While trades in April and May are rare, they are not unprecedented. Let's take a look at what is being written in the Blogosphere…

  • Fire Ned Colletti Now argues that Ned Colletti does not deserve an extension. My head just exploded.
  • Sox and Pinstripes makes a case for the Yankees signing Pedro Martinez.
  • Jorge Says No! takes a look at the market for Paul Byrd.
  • More Hardball puts together a roster of the highest paid players ever.
  • Fangraphs reviews the Yankees drafts from the past three years.
  • The Fightins honor Raul Ibanez's first month with the Phillies. The signing was highly criticized.
  • 6 Pound 8 Ounce Baby Joba contemplates the Yankees acquiring Chone Figgins.

Rosenthal On Yankees, Acta, Pedro

By Tim Dierkes | April 28, 2009 at 8:52am CDT

The latest from Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports…

  • The Yankees' bullpen ranks 12th in the AL with a 6.47 ERA in 64 innings.  Rosenthal learned that GM Brian Cashman isn't interested in any of the available relievers, and the plan seems to be to let them pitch their way out of the funk.  Early offenders include Jose Veras, Edwar Ramirez, and Damaso Marte.  Plus, Brian Bruney is out with an elbow injury.
  • Rosenthal explains some of the criticisms of Nationals manager Manny Acta.  He does not think a firing is imminent, but Acta may not make it through the year.
  • David Ortiz on Pedro Martinez: "When I saw him pitch, I had hot flashes of when he was here."
  • Rosenthal notes the team-friendly nature of Albert Pujols' current seven-year, $100MM contract.

Brewers Not In On Pedro Martinez

By Tim Dierkes | April 27, 2009 at 6:50pm CDT

Yesterday, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe wrote that "the Brewers may be emerging in the hunt" for free agent Pedro Martinez.  However, talking to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy, Brewers GM Doug Melvin said he's never spoken to Pedro's agent.

Cafardo learned that the Dodgers haven't been involved on Pedro since the offseason.  He then speculated in his article on the Mets, Rangers, Nationals, Blue Jays, Astros, Rockies, A's, Orioles, Indians, and Pirates.  T.R. Sullivan informed us today that the Rangers "do not expect to get involved" with Pedro.  The Nationals are known to have mild interest.  And here's a Ken Rosenthal's take from Thursday (he downplayed the Angels, Indians, Dodgers, and Mets as suitors).

Bottom line: the Nationals are the only team admitting current interest, and acting GM Mike Rizzo is wary of the price.

Odds & Ends: Perez, D’Backs, Baez

By Tim Dierkes | April 27, 2009 at 9:57am CDT

Links for Monday…

  • RotoAuthority looks more closely at the Pirates' MLB-best rotation.
  • Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel says the Marlins won't be pursuing Luis Vizcaino.
  • On Saturday, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan wrote that the Rangers don't expect to be in on Pedro Martinez, but could have interest in Vizcaino for a Triple A job.
  • Eddie Bajek of Detroit Tigers Thoughts has a quick American League Elias rankings preview.
  • Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post thinks Oliver Perez may be headed to the bullpen or even Triple A if he'll consent.  Perez has pitched poorly in three of his four starts.  He's had streaks like this before, though.
  • With Brandon Webb out for at least six weeks, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic wonders if the Diamondbacks will be sellers this summer.
  • Could Danys Baez have midseason trade value?  Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun thinks it's possible, despite the pitcher's $5.5MM salary.
  • Joel Sherman of the New York Post looks back at last summer's Xavier Nady/Damaso Marte deal with the Pirates.
  • Murray Chass thinks Ned Colletti deserves a contract extension.  Do you agree?
  • ESPN's Jorge Arangure Jr. wonders who will be the first American-born player to exploit a draft loophole by dropping out of high school and living in another country for a year to become a free agent.

Angels May Look to Independent Leagues for Pitching Help

By Brian Shephard | April 26, 2009 at 1:34pm CDT

According to Kevin Baxter of the Los Angeles Times, Angels manager Mike Scioscia says he might look to independent leagues for pitching help.

"There are some good pitchers that don't have jobs that have major league experience," Scioscia said of independent league pitchers.

According to Baxter, "the team appears unlikely to make a trade and management doesn't believe the big-name free agents still on the market – namely Pedro Martinez and Paul Byrd – can get up to game speed fast enough to help them."

Baxter notes that Jose Lima and Brendan Donnelly are among the players who have resurrected their careers after pitching in the independent Atlantic League. He mentions Ryan Drese as a player who "might be worth a look" by the Angels.

Cafardo’s Latest: Stetter, Catalanotto, Pedro

By | April 26, 2009 at 9:41am CDT

The Boston Globe's Nick Cafardo has a few bits of information…

  • The Red Sox scouted Brewers left-hander Mitch Stetter last week.  The 28-year-old reliever has held lefties to a .170 average and rigthties to a .151 mark this season.  The Sox, who scouted him last week, are simply being thorough and exploring options in case they come to need anothery lefty in the pen, writes Cafardo.
  • Free agent outfielder Frank Catalanotto has received interest, but is holding out for the right fit.
  • Jacque Jones and Frank Thomas have been working out together in Las Vegas and are both hoping to land MLB roster spots at some point this season.
  • As Cafardo writes, "The Brewers may be emerging in the hunt" for free agent Pedro Martinez.  The Blue Jays, Astros, Rockies, A's, Orioles, Indians and Pirates are also thought to have some level of interest.

Pedro Martinez May Sign Soon

By Tim Dierkes | April 24, 2009 at 6:47pm CDT

6:47pm: Just to clarify, Nationals GM Mike Rizzo says the team maintains mild interest in Pedro.

1:41pm: For what it's worth, Dave Sheinin of the Washington Post would like to see the Nationals ink Pedro.  He believes the organization has more than enough money, citing the recent Forbes findings, to match the right-hander's high salary demands.

FRIDAY, 8:53am: MLB.com's Bill Ladson has a source saying the Nationals haven't had interest in Pedro since Spring Training.  The door remains just a crack open in the event that Martinez becomes amenable to an inexpensive contract.  Otherwise, Ladson's Nationals source says, "We are satisfied with our rotation even though there is going to be some bumps along the way. We wouldn't want to make any changes there."

Meanwhile, here's Dodgers GM Ned Colletti talking about Pedro.

THURSDAY: According to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports, Pedro Martinezcould decide on his next team within two weeks.  He's set to begin throwing off a mound tomorrow.  Rosenthal says Pedro is open to both contending and rebuilding teams, but continues to demand a $5MM salary.  ESPN's Jayson Stark suggested today that Martinez's exorbitant asking price may be a way of delaying his return.

A rundown of possible suitors, from Rosenthal:

  • Angels GM Tony Reagins recently admitted to contacting Pedro's agent, but Rosenthal says "the two sides have not spoken in more than two weeks."
  • Rosenthal learned from Nationals acting GM Mike Rizzo that the team has mild interest in Pedro and scouted him in March.  Martinez's asking price is the issue.
  • The Rangers have some interest.
  • Rosenthal's Yankees source denies interest in Pedro, despite the pitcher telling friends the opposite.  There is a Dominican newspaper report floating about suggesting a Pedro-Yankees union, but we'll trust Rosenthal's source.
  • The Indians don't have the money, the Dodgers don't like the price, and the Mets aren't interested.
  • Rosenthal does not mention the Orioles, Cardinals, or Pirates, teams that have been linked to Pedro in the past.

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Mulder, Pedro, Cabrera, Holliday

By Cork Gaines | April 24, 2009 at 8:09am CDT

On this date 32 years ago, Carlos Beltran was born. Beltran is still one of only 19 players to ever sign a contract for at least $100MM (four currently play for the Yankees). With three years left on Beltran's seven-year, $119MM deal signed in 2005, let's take a look a what is being written in the Blogosphere…

  • Feeling Dodger Blue wonders if Mark Mulder is the Dodgers' best option.
  • Never Forget '69 wonders if the Mets should explore adding Pedro Martinez.
  • The Detroit Tigers Weblog addresses the recent rumors that the Tigers will look to trade Miguel Cabrera.
  • The Baseball Opinion takes a closer look at the Nationals' attempt to remake their roster.
  • River Ave. Blues says the Yankees' series against the A's was an audition for Matt Holliday.
