Graziano’s Latest: Sabathia, Halladay

By Tim Dierkes | November 19, 2008 at 4:39pm CDT

4:39pm: Tony Jackson of the L.A. Daily News shoots down all Dodgers rumors – no offer in the near future for Sabathia, no talks for Halladay, and no interest in Raul Ibanez.

I think Graziano’s Halladay musings have been distorted a bit – he basically said the Blue Jays might explore the trade market at some point.

3:31pm: Graziano adds in a new post that the Giants plan to make a six-year offer in excess of $100MM but under $140MM.  Tom Haudricourt had info about a Giants bid several hours earlier as well.

Haudricourt adds that the Angels will make a bid, but reports about the Dodgers may be inaccurate.

12:26pm: Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger explains why C.C. Sabathia is taking his time while mulling over the Yankees’ six-year, $140MM offer.  Graziano believes Sabathia and his agents are waiting to see what the Dodgers propose.

Graziano speaks of "rumblings today that the Dodgers either have offered or are about to offer Sabathia a six-year contract worth between $110 and $120 million."  He believes this could compel the Yankees to increase their offer, just to ensure a ridiculous ($30MM+) gap between the two proposals.

Graziano has a source who continues to insist the Blue Jays will explore the market for ace Roy Halladay, who has two years and $30MM left on his deal.  In that case, he believes the Dodgers are the most likely match.  If the Dodgers acquire Halladay, they would focus on Manny Ramirez rather than Sabathia.

Blue Jays To Sit Out Free Agent Market?

By Tim Dierkes | November 19, 2008 at 9:15am CDT

Beyond attempting to re-sign starter A.J. Burnett, Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi does not intend to dabble in free agency this year.  He told MLB.com’s Jordan Bastian he’d probably stay in-house.  Ricciardi shot down rumors of interest in Jason Giambi, Milton Bradley, and Rafael Furcal.  Drunk Jays Fans doesn’t buy the talk, though.

Trades are Ricciardi’s ideal route, though Richard Griffin notes J.P. has rarely dealt prospects for Major Leaguers.  Griffin believes big league trade chips may include B.J. Ryan, John McDonald, and Lyle Overbay.  Jason Frasor could be another.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Burnett, Lowe, Peavy

By Tim Dierkes | November 19, 2008 at 8:25am CDT

Here’s a look at the latest from Ken Rosenthal.

  • Rosenthal says reports of the Blue Jays’ four-year, $54MM offer to A.J. Burnett are inaccurate – they’ve yet to make a proposal.  He’s on board with Kat O’Brien’s info from yesterday, noting Boston’s interest.
  • Scott Boras is apparently telling teams he wants "a Zito-type contract" for righty Derek Lowe.  Lowe is 35, while Zito was 28.  Is Boras implying that he wants $18MM a year?  Obviously Lowe will not find a seven-year offer.  ESPN’s Buster Olney says Boras wants five years for Lowe.
  • The Padres told the Yankees a Jake Peavy deal is possible even without Phil Hughes.  They’ve scouted Hughes anyway, but he’s off-limits.
  • The Rockies will sit back and listen on Garrett Atkins and Huston Street.  They don’t plan on signing a free agent to replace Matt Holliday.
  • The Mets want to add a righthanded bat, though they’re not high on Pat Burrell.

Yankees Rumors: Abreu, Burnett, Teixeira

By Tim Dierkes | November 18, 2008 at 12:44pm CDT

George King of the New York Post and Kat O’Brien of Newsday have the latest on the Yankees, who are in hot pursuit of free agent starting pitching.

  • The Yankees will offer arbitration to Bobby Abreu, according to Jon Heyman.  No surprise there.
  • King says the Yankees are preparing an offer for A.J. Burnett, "perhaps a five-year deal worth about $80 million."  Burnett’s agent says they’re just discussing parameters.  It would be a strong offer, dwarfing the Blue Jays’ four years, $54MM.  ESPN’s Buster Olney believes a fifth guaranteed year will ultimately result in the winning bid for Burnett.
  • The Yankees may make an offer to Derek Lowe soon; they’ve reached out to Scott Boras regarding him.  Other Lowe suitors: the Dodgers, Red Sox, Mets, and Rangers.  O’Brien adds that the Yanks expressed interest in Mark Teixeira to Boras (despite the Nick Swisher acquisition).  The Orioles are also in on in Tex.
  • King talked to a "baseball exec" who sees the Cubs re-signing Ryan Dempster at four years, $52MM.
  • Andy Pettitte’s agent doesn’t want a pay cut from this year’s $16MM.
  • The expectation is still for Mike Mussina to retire; we may know this week.
  • The Yankees aren’t in on Jake Peavy, as evidenced by Kevin Towers’ comments last night.  Rick Sutcliffe and Mark Grace have been pitching the Cubs to Peavy, though the hangup seems more about which players the Chicago would send to San Diego.
  • The Yanks have an offer of about six years, $140MM on the table for C.C. Sabathia, and he’s mulling it over (somewhere).

Gammons Rumors: Sabathia, Manny, Furcal, Bradley

By Tim Dierkes | November 18, 2008 at 10:16am CDT

Here’s how ESPN’s Peter Gammons sees some of the bigger free agent dominoes falling, assuming the Dodgers land Sabathia:

Interesting how many GMs think that if the Dodgers get C.C. Sabathia, the Giants will get big into Manny Ramirez, and Billy Beane and the A’s will continue to move fast on Rafael Furcal. Also, expect Toronto to make good on its promise to Milton Bradley that he is the Blue Jays’ priority.

Would Beane and Brian Sabean really be influenced by Sabathia landing in L.A.?  We may never know, as the Yankees have come out of the free agent gate with their guns blazing.  I can see Beane getting Furcal regardless, even with Bobby Crosby under contract for ’09.

I guessed Bradley would land in Toronto, but only because I like the fit.  This is the first I’ve heard of them making him a priority over Jason Giambi or Manny.

Gammons’ Latest: Penny, Jenks, Salty

By Tim Dierkes | November 17, 2008 at 9:13am CDT

Let’s take a look at Peter Gammons’ Saturday blog post.

  • Gammons indicates that Brad Penny is working hard this offseason, and teams such as the Cardinals, Red Sox, Rangers, and Blue Jays "appreciate" his past success.
  • The Mets are apparently worried about Bobby Jenks’ declining strikeout rate, a sentiment echoed by Joel Sherman.  Sherman talked to a Mets official who said the chances of acquiring Jenks are "close to zero."
  • The Rangers apparently wanted Clay Buchholz or two of Justin Masterson/Nick Hagadone/Michael Bowden for Jarrod Saltalamacchia.  The Red Sox aren’t biting.
  • The Rangers would probably have to trade Hank Blalock ($6.2MM) to make room for Kerry Wood.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Peavy, Teixeira, Burnett

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 15, 2008 at 9:54am CDT

Ken Rosenthal’s got an interesting new column up.

  • Now that talks with the Braves have ended for the time being, Padres GM Kevin Towers is talking with the Yankees about Jake Peavy. The Yankees have had “numerous discussions” with the Padres, even though they just offered C.C. Sabathia a contract and are still considering A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe.
  • Peavy’s agent Barry Axelrod said that “the Angels probably would be more appealing” geographically, but “from other perspectives, they might be less appealing” than other teams
  • Rosenthal talked with an agent who said that the Angels could wait a week or 10 days before making Mark Teixeira a “knockout offer” with a deadline.
  • Even though the Yankees traded for Nick Swisher, they could still have interest in Teixeira if he’s willing to consider a shorter contract of four or five years for top dollar.
  • Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi knows that Toronto “won’t be the highest bidder” for A.J. Burnett. Ricciardi hopes that Burnett likes Toronto enough to re-sign.
  • The Indians are considering going after both Juan Cruz and Jeremy Affeldt instead of an experienced closer.
  • The Phillies and Giants could also bid on Cruz.
  • The Cardinals will have interest in Affeldt and Joe Beimel as they try to strengthen their bullpen.

Jays’ Plans Start With Burnett

By Tim Dierkes | November 14, 2008 at 10:09am CDT

According to Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star, the Blue Jays have a four-year, $54MM offer ready for A.J. Burnett.  They’ll apparently leave that proposal out there, let Burnett shop it around, and wait until the situation is resolved before moving on to other free agent pitchers.  Surely Burnett can top $13.5MM a year.

Griffin says Ryan Dempster (Canadian!) and Derek Lowe could be targets if Burnett signs elsewhere, assuming they are still on the market.  Jeff Blair wrote yesterday that Brad Penny is also on the radar.

Blue Jays Rumors: Greene, Giambi, Penny

By Tim Dierkes | November 13, 2008 at 12:48pm CDT

Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail has a few Blue Jays rumors, hidden at the bottom of his column today.

  • The Jays have kicked the tires on Padres shortstop Khalil Greene, who will almost certainly be dealt if San Diego acquires Yunel Escobar.  Greene is coming off an awful season and is set to earn $6.5MM, so he shouldn’t be too hard to pry loose.
  • Free agents Jason Giambi and Brad Penny are on the Jays’ radar.

Odds and Ends: Pettitte, Zaun, Blanco

By Tim Dierkes | November 11, 2008 at 5:00pm CDT

Links for Tuesday…

  • Scott Bordow feels the D’Backs and Randy Johnson should meet at $5MM, which still seems light.
  • David Murphy explains why the Phillies make more sense than the Mariners for Jamie Moyer, geographically.
  • David Ortiz would like the Red Sox to add a 30 home run bat.
  • Richard Justice wants the Astros to sign both Randy Wolf and Andy Pettitte.  He says the Cubs and Cardinals will be talking to Pettitte even though his heart is with the Yankees.
  • El Lefty Malo recommends the Giants sign Derek Lowe.  The Giants are at least considering the big-ticket free agents.
  • Jeff Blair runs through a few options for the Blue Jays if A.J. Burnett leaves.
  • Free agent catcher Gregg Zaun is not pleased with Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi.
  • The D’Backs want Miguel Montero showcased as a catcher.
  • Ken Davidoff has a list of nine intriguing (and older) free agents.
  • Joel Sherman joins Buster Olney in saying Brian Giles vetoed a trade to the A’s in August, after the Red Sox won the claim and failed to make a deal.  How is this possible?
  • Geovany Soto expects Henry Blanco to re-sign with the Cubs.
  • Tony Massarotti looks at possible trade partners for the Red Sox.
