WSCR: Cubs Trade "Imminent"
Several posters have alerted me to a George Ofman update on WSCR The Score in Chicago. Apparently Cubs GM Jim Hendry has pushed a scheduled 5:30 CST press conference to 8:00. Ofman has managed to narrow down the trading partner to the Marlins or Devil Rays.
The Cubs have several trade candidates on those clubs: Juan Pierre, Aubrey Huff, and Julio Lugo are the likely suspects. I'll be at a poker game at 8:00, but I'm sure our loyal Cubs followers will keep you updated in the comments.

I am pedicting that the deal is for Gathright, Lugo, and Huff. This deal would close every starting position hole that the Cub have.
Now, if they could just get rid of Barrett.

i pray this player is not julio lugo huff is good but lugo is another soso leadoff man, gathright or pierre brings real spead and leadoff potential, the cubs better make a real trade without trading pie or hill

Narrowed down the two teams to DRays & Marlins? Really? You've got to be kidding me Offman!!
It's not like those were the two rumored teams for the last week!! Get your a$$ out of the bar and do some work!

For all those interested, with the conference's new 8pm CST time, it's very likely to be picked up by Chicago's best sports show. "Sports Central" on 720 AM which runs 7-9.
WGN can be streamed nationwide at www.wgnradio.com , so in all likelyhood anyone who wants the press conference can fire up their RealPlayer at 8 CST.
With fingers crossed

I don't see how getting Gathright closes the CF & lead-off hole! Do we really think Baker will run him out there every day in center and let him lead-off?? Come-on, Baker will have him platoon with Hairston in CF.
I hope the trade is for Pierre!
Posted by: Paul | December 06, 2005 at 06:28 PM
"The Chicago Cubs have announced the signing of John Mabry"
LOL
It hasn't been "officially" announced yet, has it?
Posted by: Jarid | December 06, 2005 at 06:28 PM
This is what is going down:
The Cubs would get:
Jaun Pierre
Matt Erickson
The Marlins would get
Sean Henn
Scott Proctor
Jeffrey Karstens
Jerome Williams
Jerry Hairston
The Yankees would get:
Correy Patterson
Ron Villone
This is from an inside source at the Winter Meetings.
Posted by: Steve | December 06, 2005 at 06:29 PM
How does that trade make any sense for the cubs? We give up Patterson, Hairston, AND Williams for Pierre and a guy I never heard of?
I don't buy it for a second!!
Posted by: Paul | December 06, 2005 at 06:31 PM
Jarid, I would stab myself in the eye if it was just Mabry.
Interesting stuff, Steve...here's a link to some info on Erickson. I wasn't familiar with him - looks like a minor league veteran infielder who gets on base and has no power.

WGN RADIO will not carry it live...they don't have anyone in Dallas...
Posted by: Mike In Chicago | December 06, 2005 at 06:33 PM
There is No way that the Cubs make that deal. Why would they give so much up for a guy that will be here for one year, and a career minor leaguer???
Posted by: Bob | December 06, 2005 at 06:35 PM
You gotta assume one of the major networks will catch wind of thise before the scheduled press conference time.
$50 on Rosenthal.
Posted by: Jarid | December 06, 2005 at 06:37 PM
Yawn. Hendry will announce that Mabry has passed his physical, he will congratulate Grady Little on his new job, and he will proclaim the jelly-filled glazed donuts at the hotel to be just terrific!!
Theo Epstein, we long for thee.
Posted by: Rock Raines | December 06, 2005 at 06:39 PM
Don't forget about raising ticket prices again.
Posted by: Jarid | December 06, 2005 at 06:40 PM
RM....all in on 10-3 off-suit.
Posted by: Jarid | December 06, 2005 at 06:43 PM
Consider it done Jarid. I think this trade will break by 7:15...and yeah, Rosenthal will crack it.
Posted by: RumorMonger | December 06, 2005 at 06:45 PM
On www.cubs.com the feature article is Dusty Baker meeting with Milton Bradley to see if he would fit in on the club. Would that meeting even take place if a deal weren't imminent? My guess would be that's what the 8'0clock press conference is about, no?
Posted by: Mike V | December 06, 2005 at 06:45 PM
They met a month ago...

Posted by: Tim | December 06, 2005 at 06:50 PM
Mike, it could be, but then you'd be disregarding Ofman's assertion that it is with one of the Florida teams.
Posted by: RumorMonger | December 06, 2005 at 06:51 PM
That meeting happened in mid november, i believe.
Posted by: Andrew in Chicago | December 06, 2005 at 06:51 PM
shhhhhhh...Paul Harvey is on, lol.
Posted by: Jarid | December 06, 2005 at 06:52 PM
It's freaking time Hendry announces all the players to be named later.
Maybe it's the resigning of Bobby Hill.
Joking.
Posted by: Lou | December 06, 2005 at 06:52 PM
im hoping the cubs can obtain pierre and either lugo huff or gathright, the cubs have two major holes and also have any of u heard about the as wanting milton bradley, the cubs should get him and hen try to dish him and like a koronka and mitre for zito
Posted by: leefanatic25 | December 06, 2005 at 06:56 PM
Sounds more & more like TB
Posted by: Jarid | December 06, 2005 at 07:11 PM
My bet it it's Milton Bradley
Posted by: cubfan | December 06, 2005 at 07:17 PM
I think that Lugo could be good and I want Pierre a lot to so hey can set up Lee. I would really hate if the cubs traded Prior to the Phillies for Bob because Prior is young and amazing and Bob is getting old. Plus I want Zito, give them like Hill and Metrie.
Posted by: BiggestCubsFanever | December 06, 2005 at 07:20 PM
that mabry thing was the funniest and scariest thing ever.
i cant wait till dusty puts the jersey on him
Posted by: Kenny Lofton | December 06, 2005 at 07:21 PM
Mabry is good!
Milton Blows we do not want a guy who has been involved with the police and has a really had additude.
Posted by: BiggestCubsFanever | December 06, 2005 at 07:22 PM
I really hope it isn't Juan Pierre... I'd hope it's for Huff, Lugo, Bradley or Wilkerson, but I guess it's only me hoping that :)
Posted by: Danny | December 06, 2005 at 07:23 PM
I really hope its Milton Bradley. I can just see the fire works exploding in that dugout.
Posted by: DIE Cubbies DIE!!! | December 06, 2005 at 07:31 PM
there isn't room in the Cubs dugout for fireworks
Posted by: Jarid | December 06, 2005 at 07:34 PM
From Metsblog.com:
...the talk is that a deal for OF Juan Pierre could be in place…or, a deal with tampa bay for either OF Aubrey Huff or SS Julio Lugo…
Posted by: Mike V | December 06, 2005 at 07:35 PM
Hopefully they traded Corey Patterson.
Posted by: Joe Roa | December 06, 2005 at 07:40 PM
I think the trade is for Juan Pierre. That trade, according to Bruce Levine, was "imminent" three weeks ago.
Posted by: Cubz | December 06, 2005 at 07:40 PM
Oh there certainly is room in that Cubs dugout for fireworks.

Sports Central just said this "press conference" is nothing more than Hendry meeting with the media in his hotel suite. Big bummer. Time for Wendy's run.
Posted by: John S | December 06, 2005 at 07:49 PM
That press conference was the one that Jim Hendry was supose to have at 5:30 and was moved to 8:00, that is what sprung the rumors.
Posted by: Bob | December 06, 2005 at 07:52 PM
Hendry wouldn't just call a press conference to shoot the sh#$, that's not his style. Think about it?
Posted by: Jeff | December 06, 2005 at 07:53 PM
As a die-hard Marlins fan this news can not be anyworse.
The news of Pierre being traded would overshadow the good news of a possible deal for a new park today.
Posted by: gomarlins | December 06, 2005 at 07:54 PM
WGN reports that the Cubs and Marlins met again earlier today.
Posted by: Bob | December 06, 2005 at 07:56 PM

Posted by: Truth | December 06, 2005 at 08:09 PM
Tom Waddle just said it was nothing more than a normal press conference. More media BS getting us Cub fans all excited for nothing!!!
Posted by: Jeff | December 06, 2005 at 08:09 PM
I really hope we don't get Huff in this deal. Every major stat of his has been in decline over the past 3 seasons. I'm starting to think this guy was either a fluke, or is suffering from the tougher steroid policy. His work ethic has also come into question in the past. Lugo and Gathright would be a great pick-up, especially on the Gathright front. For the left-handed bat we need, I hope Hendry goes after Milton Bradley. This will give Dusty Baker a shot finally be the uniter of men he was praised to be. Maybe he's just the guy who can tame Bradley, and he'll finally earn his paycheck.

5. G.Sheffield RF
6. J.Giambi 1B

Posted by: Jeff | December 06, 2005 at 08:20 PM
your yankee lineup is pretty unrealistic. theyre still gonna lose. i dunno how you spend 200m+ and lose. in my book, that makes torre/stein/cashman sort of the anti-genius'.
Posted by: dan | December 06, 2005 at 08:21 PM

who was on the juice. You cubs fans put up with sosa all those years so don't hate.

Posted by: A-ROD | December 06, 2005 at 08:25 PM
yankee hater, you spend over 200 million dollars, go 85 million in the red, and can't win it all. I think that's a pretty miserable existence.

Dan did you personnal check to see if they all had small testies
It's only Gambino who liked the juice. Now he is legit
Posted by: A-ROD | December 06, 2005 at 08:27 PM
Pierre is not going to the Yankees. They want Cano and won't budge from it, and Cashman is not going to trade Cano for Pierre, so it is not going to happen.
Posted by: Steve | December 06, 2005 at 08:27 PM
oh... ok.
Posted by: dan | December 06, 2005 at 08:30 PM
Hey Jeff.....Man you sound really bitter, like the fan of a team who has not won "it all" in almost 100 years.........
Posted by: Tim22 | December 06, 2005 at 08:30 PM
Pierre is easily one of the most overrated players in the league. Just because a guy can steal 50 bases doesn't mean he's good. You have to get on base first, something Pierre struggled with mightily last season. Not to mention he is an awful outfielder.
Posted by: Jack | December 06, 2005 at 08:30 PM
lol and it was jack who said the yankees suck. get your posts and authors straight. obviously tho, i agree.
Posted by: dan | December 06, 2005 at 08:31 PM
Oh, and another thing. Juan Pierre's middle name is D'Vaughn... Juan D'Vaughn Pierre. I swear to God look it up.
Posted by: Jack | December 06, 2005 at 08:31 PM
Hey I get the chance to watch my team every October.
That 200 Mil gurantees a playoff spot for my team, &
I'm pretty happy with that.
I'm not just another jaded Yankee Fan.
Posted by: A-ROD | December 06, 2005 at 08:31 PM
Tim22, you sound like a typical yankee fan Tim, this had nothing to do with you, but of course you had to butt in and try to put your two cents in. No wonder why you have me asking for my money back.
Posted by: Jeff | December 06, 2005 at 08:31 PM
A-Rod, I completely understand that, but do you really think it's worth spending almost double everyone else in order to achieve. You have a guy in Steinbrenner that goes above and beyond anyone else and that's why you guys win consistently. If in Chicago, the tribune company would have the same mentality then things would be completely different. The cubs have the money to go high, but they go about 100.
Posted by: Jeff | December 06, 2005 at 08:34 PM
Jeff, Are you a Red Sux fan?
Posted by: A-ROD | December 06, 2005 at 08:34 PM
ok, this is serious. i have a SERIOUS question for yankees fans.. no hating.. ok, here goes:
can you compare watching the yankees win the championship to like, winning a badass videogame with the 40$ guide on your lap?
Posted by: dan | December 06, 2005 at 08:34 PM
A-Rod, no, definitely not, I bleed cubby blue. I'm not one of those Chicago fans that say hooray for the White Sox, I think that's crap, it's like you saying you're a New York fan cuz you like the mets too. Ya know?
Posted by: Jeff | December 06, 2005 at 08:36 PM
Well Jeff, when you call being a Yankee a "miserable existence" you're not sounding very smart. Especially since, like what A-ROD said before, we get to see our team in the post-season.
Posted by: Tim22 | December 06, 2005 at 08:36 PM
in defense to jeff...
i think his point is that no one in new yorks organization pays 200m to watch a postseason game. something tells me if they cut 50m, they wouldnt make it at all.
i bet if steinbrenner heard a-rod say "at least we got to watch a postseason game" he'd flog you.
Posted by: dan | December 06, 2005 at 08:39 PM
Thanks Dan, my point exactly.
Posted by: Jeff | December 06, 2005 at 08:40 PM
Yes when you have the money to spend, you should spend and live with the consequences.
(Such as not winning a W.S. in 5 years)
Unfortunately the Tribune operates the Cubs as purely a business and not with any sort of passion that the Boss has.
But then again why should they increase payroll significantly if they have 3 million fools going through the turnstyles at Wrigley and supporting a below average team?
Posted by: A-ROD | December 06, 2005 at 08:41 PM
Still sounds bitter in my opinion.....

Posted by: Steve | December 06, 2005 at 08:47 PM
Cubs need a CF. Patterson isn't the answer. Juan Pierre is.
Posted by: yars | December 06, 2005 at 08:48 PM
Dealing with the players involved obviously the three teams are Cincinnati, Florida and the Cubs.
Posted by: Jeff | December 06, 2005 at 08:49 PM
The three teams would have to be FLA, CHI and CIN.
But I don't buy it, haven't heard anything.

ever did? the last time the cubs won the series, it was against the sox lol.
i love the cubs. i dunno why, its the community, the crowd, the history, the field.. but im happy the sox won, cos i hate the astros. and chicago is chicago, especially if the cubs are out of it, like they often are.
the lucky thing for the yanks is the money and planning is coming from the same place.. with the cubs its tribune/mcphail to hendry.. long chain with varying levels of commitment

Posted by: denny | December 06, 2005 at 08:59 PM
I don't know about that Benson deal. I was talking in a forum last night with two guys who were at the meetins and there is a trade to send Diaz, Benson to the O's for Julio and Gibbons, and then to send Julio, Milledge and Gibbons and possibly more to A's for Zito.
I personally am skeptical since it just another rumor that probably won't come to fruit, but the Mets do want another Zito/Vazquez like pitcher.
Posted by: Steve | December 06, 2005 at 09:00 PM
Dunn moves to first, then they have 3 OF's.
Posted by: Matt | December 06, 2005 at 09:01 PM
dunn will move to 1b, so reds now have 3 outfielders.
Posted by: joe | December 06, 2005 at 09:03 PM
Hey Denny - no need for name calling. But I'm sure you're a Reds fan & realize that they're moving Dunn to 1B. If you have any Reds knowledge, you realize that Dunn has played extensively at 1B when Casey has been injured. Stay a Cubs fan & realize that Kearns is staying put.

Guys, guys, this just in. I just heard from a credible source whose name I am not at liberty to reveal, that the Cubs have just acquired Ichiro Suzuki, Manny Ramirez, Adam Dunn, and Randy Johnson in blockbuster 5 team trade. Can you believe it! I'm so excited I can barely contain myself... Please stop from posting total B.S. rumors on this site.

Reports that Gammons is saying the Dodgers are moving in on Soriano for RHP Jonathon Broxton
Posted by: Darren | December 06, 2005 at 09:21 PM
Im very serious the soriono trade is true... Channel 123 if you have sirius radio there talking about it right now
Posted by: Ryan Wetters | December 06, 2005 at 09:21 PM
The Benson trade is going to happen, and Soriano will probably switch hats in the next couple of days, but other than that, none of these rumors are imminent trades. Any trade rumor involving Corey Patterson to the Yankees is almost certainly a dud, since the Marlins only asked for Henn and Proctor for Pierre.
Posted by: Dan | December 06, 2005 at 09:22 PM
yo ryan if its a true trade for soriano y is only serious radio talking about it y no other newwsconferences no major websites
????????????
Posted by: leefanatic25 | December 06, 2005 at 09:24 PM
The Dodgers are close to acquiring Alfonso Soriano for reliever Jonathon Broxton, ESPN's Peter Gammons reports.
That would be a considerably smaller price tag than expected and more in line with what Soriano is worth
Posted by: Truth | December 06, 2005 at 09:26 PM
ya im checking chicago tribune's site a lot, and you'd figure theyd be on the frontlines of that one. yet channel 123 is all over it? hm.
Posted by: dan | December 06, 2005 at 09:27 PM
ok please forgive me I guess that trade i was talking about is in "serious" talks right now i heard it and htought it was official so im sorry didnt mean to get everyone anxious..... and yes it does make the reds have 3 outfielders Dunn is going to move to first base with willy mo,griffey, and kearns in the outfield, thank god i dont want keanrs neway
Posted by: | December 06, 2005 at 09:28 PM
yah plz stop pretending things about the cubs because hendry is too stupid to make that trade anyways hes prob asleep by now because he got tired from eating so damn much
Posted by: leefanatic25 | December 06, 2005 at 09:29 PM
youd think soriano to the cubs would make more sense.. an ok pitcher, ok cf, and a good 2b.. im not buying that dodgers deal, who the hell is that pitcher anyway?
Posted by: dan | December 06, 2005 at 09:34 PM
the reds officially traded casey their goes kearns

Wow...looks like a lot happened, but the Cubs' thing was a dud.
Posted by: RumorMonger | December 06, 2005 at 09:36 PM
yah the cubs arent actually gonna do anything at these meetings their will be a lot of rumers but hendry wont get anything done the cubs should fire him and get epstein
Posted by: leefanatic25 | December 06, 2005 at 09:38 PM
Broxton is a flame throwing, right handed relief prospect. He's got a bright future and a good trade for both teams as long as the rangers are looking to dump payroll instead of getting equal value.
Posted by: BlueCrew | December 06, 2005 at 09:45 PM
yes well, last i heard, soriano wasnt going for a prospect. and the rangers arent really looking to slash payrool that badly.
Posted by: dan | December 06, 2005 at 09:49 PM
all the cubs need to ahve a succesful year is 3 people, pierre, lugo, and either milwood washburn or zito
but it seams hendry cant even get one of them
Posted by: leefanatic25 | December 06, 2005 at 09:51 PM
He's a major-league ready prospect... soriano isn't demanding a whole lot on the market right now either
Posted by: BlueCrew | December 06, 2005 at 09:53 PM
if hes not demanding alot y dont the cubs land him and wtf y do the dogers need him they have kent itzuris and furcal and theyre bout to sing bill mueller how many middle infielders do u need
Posted by: leefanatic25 | December 06, 2005 at 09:59 PM
WHY don't the cubs trade Mitre and someone else for Soriano...man....im pissed
Posted by: Cubsfan222 | December 06, 2005 at 10:01 PM
I wouldn't worry about missing Soriano...he's nothing special. The new Tony Batista, really.
Posted by: RumorMonger | December 06, 2005 at 10:01 PM
Izturis being displaced has got to be at the bottom of the priorities the Dodgers have, especially since he's out for half the season, anyway. Tears should not be shed for players with 0.7 VORPs.
Posted by: Dan | December 06, 2005 at 10:08 PM
Good point. Soriano should stick at 2nd.
Posted by: RumorMonger | December 06, 2005 at 10:10 PM
Chicago Tribune reported that Dusty Baker met with Milton Bradley today, a prelude to a possible trade.
Ok cue the cheesy internet geek jokes about Dusty Baker.....now. Leave this site to baseball talk guys....get girlfriends.

George Offman from the score is pure GARBAGE!, every rumor or "trade" he reports is crap
Posted by: Mike | December 06, 2005 at 10:47 PM
Something was probably going on that didn't go through. Maybey the deal was lost at the last minute by a better offer or a snag came up. Maybey the Cubs got a better offer. Maybey Hendry just wants to make the media guys look bad.

I wouldn't be so quick to trash Ofman, Levine, or the others. They're just reporting what they hear; they're not making stuff up.

CUBS.COM SAYS THAT CUBS HAD MADE A OFFER TO MARLINS TO GET JUAN PIERRE BUT THE MARLINS ARE YET TO ACCEPT THE TRADE JIM HENDRY HASNT ANNOUNCED ANY PEOPLE IN THIS DEAL

ESPN Reports cubs have acquired Pierre for Sergio Mitre and prospects Renyel Pinto and Ricky Nolasco pending physicals.

is it just me or does that seem like a great deal for the cubs?
Posted by: alex | December 07, 2005 at 07:27 AM
Yes that is a amaing deal for him. He is so good and young. We have to lock him up he can steal bases like no other.
Posted by: BiggestCubsFanever | December 07, 2005 at 07:36 AM
The Cubs got themselves a leadoff hitter! Juan Pierre for Mitre and 2 minor leaguers. Man, I can't wait to see Pierre standing on second or third when D-Lee comes up next season!
Posted by: JonnyRed | December 07, 2005 at 07:55 AM
that trade kicks ass for the cubs now they can focus on a 2nd baseman/ ss/ and another starting pitcher but at least hendry did one thing right
Posted by: leefanatic25 | December 07, 2005 at 08:24 AM
This trade is terrible for the Cubs...
they got Juan Pierre who never had an OPS that touched .800. Even last year, his OPS was below .700 in 2005.
Wilkerson/Bradley would've been much better options, but of course, the Cubs had to make a "Scott Podsednik" deal of their own.
Have a great year losing Hendry, I believe you just lost your job.
Posted by: Danny | December 07, 2005 at 08:50 AM
Of course the Marlins gave the cubs a great deal. Before you shower Hendry with love, remember that Pierre is only the latest Marlins player to be burned in the fire sale. I do agree that it will give the Cubs a great boost, but I want people to remember that Hendry has still not orchestrated anything amazing this off-season. It will take several more trades before I believe it will be safe to say the Cubs have had a successful winter.
You also have to remember that Pierre is coming to the Cubs after the worst season of his career. In 2005 he posted his lowest batting average at .276 and lowest OBP at .326. He also managed to hit only 19 doubles, his poorest showing in a season with more than 600 ABs. Pierre is also in a contract year, meaning the Cubs are either renting him, or signing the speedy CF for the long haul. However, I am more than a little excited to see the Cubs have finally aquired a true lead-off man.
Posted by: Cubbies in my stove | December 07, 2005 at 09:00 AM
Danny, I am as much of a skeptic as you about this trade, however, to purport the idea that the Milton Bradley or Brad Wilkerson would of been better options is purposturous.
Lets compare the three:
Bradley: Has a lifetime .269 BA and .350 OBP with 25 HR pop. But has only 1 season playing more than 110 games, and in that season he had 123 SOs in 516 ABS. He also has a penchant for misbehavior and injuries. The Cubs may still get Bradley and turn him into an all-star outfielder, but at the current moment the guy looks and sounds just like another failure who goes by the name of Correy Patterson.
Pierre: Has a lifetime .305 BA, .355 OBP, has had 45 or more SBs in every season since 2001, had 13 triples last season, and has posted 600 or more ABs in 4 of the past 5 seasons. Talk about a consistent lead off hitter.
Wilkerson: Has a lifetime .256 Avg, .365 OBP, with 30 HR pop at Wrigley. He has played in 145 or more games every season since 2002 and has increased his doubles totals every year. However, he strikes out nearly 30% of the time and would of cost the Cubs a great deal more to aquire than Pierre did.
Keep in mind that all three players are coming off bad years, although Pierre's 2005 campaign was better by far than the other two. If Hendry had given up top 5 prospects for Wilkerson and left Pierre, whom he aquired for an unsuccessful Mitre and mid-range players Nolasco and Renyel Pinto, we would all be dubbing him a huge failure right now. Danny, I suggest that you check your data next time before you post an aggressive statement like the one you did here.
Posted by: Cubbies in my stove | December 07, 2005 at 09:36 AM
Cubbies, you have to admit that calling Danny's statements preposterous is aggressive as well. A very good case can be made that even with their flaws, Wilkerson and Bradley are better options than Pierre.
