Trade Candidates Part 2

Last time we looked at players in their contract year and trade possibilities.  Today we'll open the field and see who else could be available.

Dealing Shea Hillenbrand or Eric Hinske would probably make sense for the Blue Jays.  It looks like the two will enter 2006 splitting DH duty for the Jays, and Hillenbrand may have twice as much value with the bat as Hinske.  The problem is figuring out which team actually has a need for a middling 1B/3B/DH type.

The Red Sox have six starters (seven if you think Papelbon is rotation-ready), but they shouldn't be so eager to send one packing.  Josh Beckett and Curt Schilling are highly unlikely to make all of their starts.  Epstein might send Arroyo over to Tampa Bay for Julio Lugo anyway.  More likely, of course, is a signing of Alex Gonzalez and a trade of David Wells for a spare part or prospect.

A lot of folks think Carlos Pena still has some good seasons ahead of him.  For example, PECOTA projects him to hit .255/.349/.482 in 514 ABs in 2006.  The Tigers could probably use some sort of contingency plan in case Carlos Guillen misses time again.

The Diamondbacks have too many veteran OFs and no place for Carlos Quentin.  I'm sure Shawn Green and Luis Gonzalez are available, it's just a matter of finding clubs to take most of their salaries.  Both outfielders are still contributors.

I think the other problem with Green and Gonzalez is that, I believe, they can block any trade.

Green or Gonzo to NY? anyone?

Don't see a no-trade for Gonzo, but Green can veto a trade to anywhere except L.A. and San Diego.

Gonzo is a 10/5 -- automatic NTC

Word. Good catch.

do you really think theo would deal arroyo after the deal he just signed. boston doesnt need anymore bad press and a move like that could get ugly. not to mention tampa would also demand one their top prospects and as far as i can tell they dont want to deal any of those that they have left that would be of use to tampa.

I'm a White Sox fan who is glad to see this thread not tainted with the Cubbies.
I'm looking forward to interleague when the Sox lay the smack down on the northsiders. Also I will be waving my Red birds Pennant as LaRussa and Pujols win the division by 10-12 games.

Good luck to the Northsiders...Although that alone won't be enough

Your 2005 World Series Champions: The Chicago White Sox

Your 2003 NLCS Chokers:
The Chicago Cubs

I apologize
...What I mean't to say is:

Chicago's World Series Champions: The Chicago White Sox

Chicago's Chokers:
The Chicago Cubs

Thanks

As a Bostonian...I with some reservation must agree with Matt. However neither Chicago team will do much this season seeing of how their both so overrated. 2006 will be like 2004...OUR YEAR!
Red Sawx Win the Division,
then the Penant, and then win the W.S.

oh..yeah
YANKEES SUCK!!!!
WHITE SOX OVERRATED!!!
&
CUBS CHOKE!

In general, Chicago is a town filled with losers and a culture of losing.

Is ANYONE out there mature enough to have a baseball conversation that doesn't degrade into chest-puffing and name-calling? Come on, children, grow up. The only thing worse than a sore loser is an arrogant winner.

I can't see Theo going after Lugo. He's got one arrest-waiting-to-happen too many on the roster as it is.

Although I think Lugo would help the sox I think they may be done dealing. Epstein loves his prospects and he has already parted with some very good ones. Far more likely is A Gonzalez playing a year until Pedroia is ready.

David Wells will hopefully be traded somewhere west (he deserves it) I know I saw rumors of him for Johnathan Broxton earlier in the winter not sure if thats still a possibility. I would try and move him for some prospect.

I dont think theres really a possibility of moving any of the DBacks outfielders for one if Green is healthy he could definately provide some pop and they are both aging and overpaid. Also I dont know if the DBacks young guys are totally ready for the big time.

On the whole I expect the rest of the offseason to be rather quiet. I really dont expect too many trades until spring training when teams can see how people are performing

Ignore steven, you only prove his point in regards to the losing sports culture that is (with the exception being the Sox) Chicago. Go do something productive instead of crying like a typical cubs fan.
You make me sick.

Matt, rooting for your own team (pathetic as they are) doesn't include ripping someone else's. Oh wait, you're a Sox fan, I'm sorry. You're as hated in Ohio as much as you are in Chicago.

As much as the Tigers need a contingency plan for Guillen, it makes no difference as to their view on Pena. He is strictly a first baseman and will provide no cover at all for Guillen when he inevitably misses games. Guillen's backup figures to be Omar Infante. Pena's future could be decided in spring training - the new management team have expressed a desire to work with him before they decide whether to trade him or not. I'm not sure the Tigers have room for Pena, Shelton and Dmitri Young on the 25 man roster.

I dont really think it is a room thing as much as it is an AB thing. All three of those guys can produce at first and my direction would be to get Shelton as many AB's as possible. So I think rumor was thinking that moving Pena could bring the tigers other pieces they need ala a backup at short

Yeah, the idea was to move Pena for some kind of SS backup plan.

The RedSox pitching staff is incredibly complete. Their rotation AND bullpen look formidable on paper. Their lineup is still mighty powerful and doesn't really need a primetime shortstop. That said, they need everything to go their way. I could easily see Beckett, Foulke and Schilling spending some time on the DL. I could see Lowell and Snow being unproductive. I could see Crisp and Riske shrinking in the bright lights of Boston. And so on and so forth. They could well win the division, but they could also come in 3rd.

Agreed, they are pretty tough to pin down.

Steven, you suck,
The white sox dominated the regular season, and had the best post season ever, YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BASEBALL

You are definately seeing some things I dont then. There bullpen is a mess. They dont have a closer (I know all the red sox fans are going to yell at me but I expect nothing out of Foulke) Your rotation is shaky being anchored down by two injury risks. And they may have the least productive firstbaseman and shortstop in the AL east. I see them coming in second in the AL east but not even being a factor in the wildcard.

I didnt mean that comment to seem so argumentative I just dont see the Red Sox having much of a shot at the AL east unless everything goes there way and a lot of injuries hit the Yankees and Blue Jays

if the a's keep zito they are the most complete team in baseball! I really think they should, and will keep the big zito! Beane man should sit fast! they are this years sox!!!

As much as I dislike the Sox, I would never wish harm on anyone. I like most of the Sox players very much. I simply wish (pray to God, actually) that the team plane will catch fire, have to make an emergency crash landing, and put a good pee-their-pants scare into everyone on the plane. No one will be hurt; however, the crash will completely destroy Steven's house.

At the time of the crash, Matt will be at Steven's house looting the cheap beer from his refrigerator. Matt, of course, will not survive, but Steven will get a new house from his insurance company and live happily ever after.

Happily ever after, that is, until Fall of 2006 when the Cubs win the World Series (following a 62-100 White Sox season).

I dont understand how anyone could actually say the Red Sox are headed for even a division pennant. How many holes does that team have? Wheres your centerfielder? Damon ran to New York where he will certainly lead that team to a division title. How is your starting pitching formidable? Josh Beckett? Whats he done since the World Series? He's missed more starts then he's pitched. Schilling? Old, still the ace of the staff so ill give you a quality starter. Arroyo? He's kind of a joke isnt he? Fifth starter at best. Papelbon? Young, inexperienced, more effective out of the bullpen. So how are the White Sox overrated with the four starters that had four consecutive complete games in the '05 World Series plus Mccarthy and Vasquez? The only hole the White Sox have is arguably at centerfield where Certainly Anderson will be a capable fit.
AL east prediction: NY Yankees win Division Toronto Blue Jays win Wild card.
AL central prediction: Who else?

My prediction
AL East: Yankees
AL West: A's
AL Central: Twins
AL Wildcard Rangers

NL East: Mets
NL West: Dodgers
NL Central: Cardinals
NL Wildcard: Braves

Awesome post Adam!!!
YANKEES WIN
WHITE SOX WIN
YANKEES WIN
WHITE SOX WIN

A-ROD WINS

Ha...
I'm sorry Kyle, but you must be enjoying that DC Kool Aid (Both the Twinkies & Rangers are descended from the Original AL Washington Senators.)

SoX have the best AL Rotation!
And in your opinion, they don't make the playoffs!
Wow...

AL East: Yankees
AL Central: White Sox
AL West: A's
AL Wildcard: Indians

NL East: Braves
NL Central: Cubs
NL West: Dodgers
NL Wildcard: Mets

My friend told me Cliff Floyd might be traded after the all-star break. Something about there top prospect. Think we can get him for Pie?

I'm a Sox fan too, but can we please stop this asinine ripping? If someone posts something really stupid and deserves a rip, I can kind of understand it, but this is ridiculous. This kind of stuff doesn't represent most real Sox (and for that matter any team's) fans.

I was going to comment on how this thread was great with no stupidity or ripping, but Oh well... :(

How could you seriously consider the Twins a contender? The Indians have a better chance to overtake the White Sox than the garbage picking money saving twins.

For Det, why not move Pena to SF for somebody like Merkin Valdez to pitch out of the bullpen? It seems SF is looking for a left handed powerhitting 1B with a great glove and Pena has no spot. Also, moving Monroe to Atlanta for Betemit would take care of the Guillen issues and concerns, plus he has no spot in Atlanta. Det has Granderson, Logan/Thames, & Ordonez in the OF. I heard Atl/Det almost happened but Det wanted pitching. This deal makes sense to me.

Only a fool would trade Pie for the enevitable break down of Cliff Floyd. But then again you are dealing with the Cubs.

Astros fan, I dont know if your from Chicago, but no White Sox fan can consider themselves an Astros fan, I mean come on thats pretty much self explanatory. Come down and see what it's like on the SOUTH SIDE!!!

Ha...

SoX have the best AL Rotation!

Wow...

The sox dont even have the best rotation in the AL EAST the blue jays have that the sox rotation is not good. Beckett hasnt ever put up 200 innings. Shilling is playing on a completely ravaged ankle. Clement has been throwing batting practice since he got hit in the head. Arroyo is a servicable number 5 pitcher. Wakefield is wakefield he will be awesome at times and suck at others. And your best pitcher from last year Wells desperately wants out. The only way I see the sox having a good rotation is if they decide to let papelbon and/or lester join it and they flourish.

And with regards to the first part there the rangers I picked because it seems like they finally get it and are going after ground ball pitchers and there team will always produce runs. And I look at the twins and there young hitters have to get better and the white sox pitchers will get worse so I am picking the former

Kyle: Pretty sure A-ROD meant the White Sox, not the Red Sox...

Hey Joe,
The ChiSox had a great season and postseason, but they certainly didn't dominate anyone at anytime. Everything went their way. They won 2 games in the regular season in which they only had 2 hits in each game.
The stars were aligned for them in '05. They should still be good in '06, but I don't ever see them dominating.

Kyle: Pretty sure A-ROD meant the White Sox, not the Red Sox...

Good point in hindsight he definately meant them and I am still not putting them in the playoffs too many pitchers having career years
