Astros Interested In Peavy, Jennings
The Houston Chronicle informs us that Astros GM Tim Purpura has inquired about the availability of pitchers Jake Peavy and Jason Jennings. Peavy has the same agent, Barry Axelrod, as Craig Biggio and Jeff Bagwell. According to Axelrod:
"I know there have been inquiries about Peavy," Axelrod said. "I can't say for sure, but I think Houston was one of the teams."
Of course, they are still waiting on a decision from Andy Pettitte.

As an Astros fan, I'd LOVE to get Peavy; but why on EARTH would the Pads even consider dealing him? Without Peavy the San Diego rotation goes from "good with lots of potential" to "crap with a lots of potential" real quick. The Padres NEED Peavy in that starting 5 to even THINK about having a competitive team.

The only reasonable trade for Peavy from the Astros would be for Ensberg and Hirsh. The Pads don't need Willy T. (they just signed J. Cruz Jr. and still have Cameron) and they don't REALLY need Lidge either.
But again, WHY would they do that? They wouldn't. Peavy is their ace and he's CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP, NO WAY they'll deal him.

Peavy for Ensberg the Unloved and Burke the Almost As Unloved sounds about right.
This would then allow Phil Garner to play Mike Lamb and give bench ABs to Orlando Palmeiro with minimal criticism.

As a Peavy fantasy owner, I hope to God this rumor isn't true. Going from Petco to Minute Maid? Yikes!

The Padres are targeting Greg Maddux so Peavy may be expendable. Although they got Kouzmanoff from the Indians, he is a rookie and they might want Ensberg to shore up 3rd base for them. Ensberg and Hirsh or Buchholz for Peavy sounds about right though...

padre fan here, and no way is ensberg involved, we have kouz, and ensberg isn't very good. that said, it would have to be a deal like hirsch, patton, and pence for it to go through

What I want to know is how come the phillies aren't mentioned whenever Peavy's name comes up. If Ensberg and Hirsh is about right wouldn't Burrell, Lieber, Floyd and cash be better. Gives the Pads what they need (Power Hitter, Reliable Veteran Pitcher) for what the Phillies would love to have (Ace). Get er done

cian:
It's H.I.R.S.H., no C, and there's no way Pads get both Hirsh and Patton(plus Pence) in a trade...that package could likely land something along the lines of Carl Crawford or Miggy Cabrera and some change.

Dirty Sox,
Padres would be taking on almost $37mil in salary, while only giving up around $20mil, that doesn't seem fair to me.
I think the Astros would have to package Burke and either Luke Scott/Hunter Pence or a pitcher from Hirsh, Nieve or Albers.

I'd love to see Peavy with the Astros. Jennings not so much, especially if it costs Brad Lidge, who's sure to turn it around this year.
Hirsh, one or two of Ensberg, Scott and/or Tavarez and a lower prospect would be fair. Pence and Patton aren't going anywhere.
Also, since Backe is out until 08, the Astros need a starter regardless if Pettitte is coming back.

Jon Lester is in comlete remission, and expected to be in Spring Training for the Sox. Not a rumor, but still great news for a great kid, and one hell of a talent.

cianfroccofan: Ensberg isn't very good? Really? So how come he was an All Star and Silver Slugger in 2005?
Granted, he had a lousy year in 2006, but part of it was due to a shoulder injury he incurred while diving for a ball at 3rd base.
Kouzmanoff may have great POTENTIAL, but he's still only a rookie. Ensberg on the other hand already has one All Star and Silver Slugger award under his belt.
You may get Hirsh or Buchholz but the Padres definitely won't get Hirsh, Patton and Pence. Patton and Pence are untouchables unless you're talking about Carl Crawford.
The Astros are also talking to the Rockies about Jennings and it may only cost them Burke since Lidge is untouchable according to GM Tim Purpura.
Posted by: Mistyck | December 05, 2006 at 12:58 PM
That doesnt even make sense. Lidge is untouchable so the rockies would just be sensitive to that fact and do it for only burke.
Hmmmm
Minaya calls up florida and says who do u want for dontrelle.
FLorida: Milledge and pelfrey
Minaya: Well pelfrey is untouchable
Fla: Ok, fine well do it for milledge straight up
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 05, 2006 at 01:06 PM
my point being that the padres dont need to trade peavy, and if they were to, they should get a better deal than florida got for beckett since peavy has 3 years left on a contract, that wont vary with arbitration.
and mistyck: do you want me to name the list of guys who have had one good year? face it ensberg has no trade value, especially to a team that already traded away their starting 2B for a young 3B.
peavy isn't likely to move so you have to overpay to get him. and that phillies deal HAAAAA!
Posted by: cianfroccofan | December 05, 2006 at 02:27 PM
Come on now... EVERY team would like to aquire Peavy. But this is not a realistic trade. The Pads would not let him go anywhere for anything other than an insane deal to benefit the Padres.
