Lieber, Kim Rumors

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has some trade rumor tidbits from around baseball this morning.  To summarize:

  • Renck does not think the Phils truly want to use Jon Lieber as a reliever, and mentions two scenarios floating around.  Lieber could be paired with Aaron Rowand and sent to the White Sox, which I would think would require at least Mike MacDougal.  Would be interesting to see Liebs back in Chicago if old pals KW and "Stand Pat" Gillick can work it out.  Or, he could go to Milwaukee for Kevin Mench.  Such a trade would have to push Claudio Vargas to the bullpen.
  • Renck says the Rockies like Mark Hendrickson despite his mediocrity and their stable of starters.  The Dodgers would like to include Hendrickson as part of a bigger deal for a slugger.
  • Byung-Hyun Kim to Florida is a long shot unless the Rox eat most of his $2.5MM salary.  The Rocky Mountain News reiterates that the interested parties are Florida, Oakland, and Texas.  You can add the Pirates to that list as well.  The Bucs could also trade for Armando Benitez.
  • John Thomson seems likely to be released.  The A's have been rumored.

The way the author just put those two Leiber rumors out there with no real source on them, it seems to be this guy is just blowing smoke. Could happen if the ChiSox are willing to part with MacDougal, but that does not seem likely.

I've thought this for awhile, but with Joe Kennedy struggling and the A's looking for a fifth starter, Lieber to the A's for Kiko Calero makes alot of sense fot both sides. The A's bullpen is deep enough to absorb the loss of Calero, who could move right into a setup role for Philly and close if Gordon gets hurt.

the sox traded away their 5th starter away, did not bring Rowand back, but now they want to reacquire a 5th starter and Rowand. McDougal is signed at a very reasonable price for the next 3 or 4 years now too. this rumor is so speculative it hurts.

Lieber to the A's makes a lot of sense.

I doubt the A's would take on Lieber's $7.5M salary.

For one year, i think they could manage.

"I doubt the A's would take on Lieber's $7.5M salary."

Well, it would only be an addition of $5.9 million in salary, as they'd be sending Calero and his $1.6 million salary to Philly. While the previous ownership group kept the purse strings tight, payroll has been raised $15 million from $55 million in 2005 to $70 million this year. I think if BB really thought that Lieber was a guy the A's needed, he could get the money freed up to do so.

Now why would any team in the MLB take Mark Hendrickson (along with others) for a slugger? He pretty much stunk it up in LA and isn't having a great spring. Though, the Mets do seem to take anybody nowadays.
