Surprisingly, with roughly four hours to ago, Adam Dunn's most likely suitor still appears to be the Washington Nationals.
Will Carroll says that Dunn would love to be reunited with good friend Austin Kearns in Washington, and might sign an extension there. He could become the face of the franchise. The problem is that the Nats don't have what the Reds want, so a third team would have to get involved.
Just speculating, but I could see some bad blood lingering between the two teams over the Gary Majewski thing. That has to make you wonder how Wayne Krivsky would ever let Dunn end up in Washington. Maybe he and Jim Bowden can let bygones be bygones.

I could definately see something where Rauch and Cordero go to a team for prospects then those prospects plus a couple from Washington go to Cincinatti.
Krivsky wants to get rid of Dunn so I bet he will swallow his pride and deal with the Nats again

When is the deadline? Is at the end of the business day today, or at midnight?
Posted by: coolpapabell | July 31, 2007 at 10:46 AM
A 3rd team would have to give the Reds prospects good enough to warrant Adam Dunn, subsequently the Nats would have to give that 3rd team something worth Adam Dunn bounty-like prospects.
1. Why wouldn't the 3rd team just get Adam Dunn for their prospects?
2. Would a 3rd team be inclined to trade prospects for prospects? Rarely happens.
Posted by: Teetz | July 31, 2007 at 10:46 AM
3. Would a 3rd team trade prospects that could land Adam Dunn to get Cordero and Rauch???
Posted by: Teetz | July 31, 2007 at 10:47 AM
Deadline = 4pm EST
Posted by: achilles17 | July 31, 2007 at 10:47 AM
It sounds like the asking price is about the same but I doubt they would give up prospects to land a power hitter and take 2 relievers
Posted by: TheWrightStuff | July 31, 2007 at 10:49 AM
The Nationals will quickly become the '05 Reds minus Griffey and Harang...so even worse.
Posted by: Teetz | July 31, 2007 at 10:51 AM
I thought the same thing teetz but you would think the reds would like Cordero
Posted by: Kramerica Industries | July 31, 2007 at 10:51 AM
wouldnt mind the braves being that team, give up a few prospects for the two nats guys, then turn around and trade rauch for some prospects and keep cordero. he is only 25. then wed have dotel soriano cordero, wickman, get picks when dotel left would be pretty nice deal
Posted by: rgdeuce | July 31, 2007 at 10:52 AM
Yeah, but what prospects do the Braves have to net Adam Dunn? And are Braves fans comfortable with giving up those prospects for Chad Cordero? He's not that good anymore.
Posted by: Teetz | July 31, 2007 at 10:55 AM
3rd team is the NY Mets. =P just guessing
That Jim Bowden is such an idiot.. The Nationals clearly don't have a plan for the future.
I'm not even comment on his high demands. Milledge and Pelfrey for Cordero.. WTF??
Posted by: pedrolourencosta | July 31, 2007 at 10:57 AM
Obviously the third team needs relief help not Adam Dunn. That team sends prospects to Cincy, Cincy sends Dunn to Washington and the third team (long list of probables looking for bullpen help) gets Rauch and Cordero.
Posted by: Iron Nat | July 31, 2007 at 10:57 AM
very true, was just looking at it to get cordero who would be solid in setup role, and some prospects back. would have to give up quite a bit to get done though. wish the braves could get a few more lefties into there rotation aka more than the 3 we have ha
Posted by: rgdeuce | July 31, 2007 at 10:59 AM
I realize a 3rd team would need relief help, but certainly the 3rd team would be able to net a much better combo of relievers for prospects good enough to land Adam Dunn, if there is even a team foolish enough to trade that much for bullpen help. Benoit and Gagne from Texas come to mind.

What's the latest on the Stark Market at 11:05 ET?
Posted by: Viva Los Royales | July 31, 2007 at 11:01 AM
Actually for the Braves Cordero as closer and Rauch & Wickman in the 7th and 8th makes sense, especially if the Dotel trade tanks.
Posted by: Iron Nat | July 31, 2007 at 11:02 AM
Buster Olney on ESPN First Take said the Wilson Betemit deal to the Yankees for Scott Proctor is done and the Red Sox are the favs to get Eric Gagne
Posted by: Kramerica Industries | July 31, 2007 at 11:03 AM
They'd have to give up a package a notch lower than what they gave up for Teixera to get Dunn. One would assume. I don't see how the Braves have that type of farm system. Also.....why wouldn't the Nats just keep the prospects they would get to give to the Reds and forget about Dunn? They are a little more than just one Adam Dunn away from being contenders.
Posted by: Teetz | July 31, 2007 at 11:04 AM
If i was a Braves fan, i would put Cordero in the closer role and Soriano as a setup.. I really dislike Bob Wickman.
Posted by: pedrolourencosta | July 31, 2007 at 11:04 AM
I still think this is where Arizona should jump in. Dunn, while a butcher every time he puts on a glove, is less of a butcher at 1B* and his LH bat would be huge for Arizona.

So the Yankees just dealt a reliever when they are looking for some help in the pen? Is Betemit playing 1st?
Posted by: pedrolourencosta | July 31, 2007 at 11:06 AM
The Nats are the most poorly ran orginization in baseball. Why on earth would the Nats want Dunn when they could get players such as: David Murphy, Andre Ethier, Criag Hanson, Carlos Quentin, or any of the young Yankee pitchers not named Hughes or Chamberlin? It makes no sesne. Dunn is a good player but its Alfonso Soriano all over again. And there are other players with more upside. Just like them signing Young to a contract extension when they could have traded him and got some decent players in return. Instead they are going to stick him in LF next year and hope he doesn't make more errors than runs.

ESPNews reports that the Yankees have agreed to trade Proctor for Betemit, and the Red Sox have traded Joel Pineiro to the Cardinals for a PTBNL.
Posted by: DoctorCurveBall | July 31, 2007 at 11:07 AM
Makes no sense for the Yanks.. Their pen just got even worse unless they are pulling a deal with Tampa or another team..
Seems that Gagne is not going to the NYY

"Makes no sense for the Yanks.. Their pen just got even worse unless they are pulling a deal with Tampa or another team."
"Maybe the Yankees are the third team - lose one reliever and get two back.
Posted by: Iron Nat | July 31, 2007 at 11:17 AM
Chad Cordero in the NL East? He'd get eaten alive. I mean, I hope the Yanks do it, but boy, that won't be pretty.
Posted by: A Washington Tragedy | July 31, 2007 at 11:22 AM
You would think Adam Dunn would require Joba or Hughes and no way the Yanks give up one for Cordero and Rauch.
Posted by: Teetz | July 31, 2007 at 11:23 AM
It just doesn't make sense for a 3 team deal to go down with one team getting the top hitter available and a young one to boot and another just getting bullpen help. I'm not sure if there is a precedent on this but it would be very odd.
Posted by: Teetz | July 31, 2007 at 11:24 AM
Dunn and Encarnacion for Zimmerman and Rauch.
Posted by: hotsaucenchickin | July 31, 2007 at 11:27 AM
Another shoe has to drop after trading Proctor and it already has to be done or else they do not trade him. On the other hand, if the second trade does not pan out an early end to their season would give them more time to map out how to spend $200 million dollars to once again be also rans.
Posted by: Iron Nat | July 31, 2007 at 11:28 AM
hot sauce, That move sounds fair, but it would be a lateral move for two bad teams.
Posted by: Teetz | July 31, 2007 at 11:29 AM
hot sauce,
I'd make that trade without Rauch. Dunn wouldn't have been back in Cincy unless they picked up the 13Mil option. Zimmerman is outstanding. With Jay Bruce tearing up AAA Zimmerman and Bruce would make up for the 40 HR in GABP. That would be awesome. This trade will not happen anyways. Just wishful thinking.
