« Phillies Obtain Julio Mateo | Main | Staying Put »
The Rangers made a legitimate offer to first baseman Mark Teixeira before trading him. Apparently they offered him an eight-year, $140MM package. That's an average annual value of $17.5MM. A little light, but not a bad starting point.
But since the deal covered the 2008 season and Teixeira would've gotten around $14MM regardless, it was really a seven-year, $126MM offer - same as Barry Zito's contract. $18MM a year for Teixeira sounds reasonable, but who knows how it will seem a year from now? He might be a $22MM player at that point. Teixeira will, of course, hit the open market after the 2008 season.

Good luck signing him Atlanta.

I guess he really wanted out of Texas. I mean I understand wanting the open market but that's good pay and security.

$22M a year for Teixeira is ridiculous. $18M a year is even high in my book. Baseball has some serious problems.

Braves acquired Royce Ring for Wil Ledezma and Wil Startup.
Posted by: buehrlebro | July 31, 2007 at 03:35 PM
that's not very comforting.

Just pulled this off of cincinatti.com
Kevin Kelly reports that Kirk Saarloos is starting for Lousville tonight. The Bats pulled Phil Dumatrait back from his start. Whether that means anything related to Arroyo remains to be seen.
Dumatrait is the reds minor league pitcher for tonights game…did they trade arroyo?
Posted by: ChippySwans | July 31, 2007 at 03:35 PM
Like I said, he ain't gonna be in Atlanta's price range.
Hope you have the stomach to see him in a Yankee/Red Sock/Met/Oriole uniform come 2009, Braves fans.

nom3k...we're used to it.
Posted by: ChippySwans | July 31, 2007 at 03:42 PM
or nom, this could just be about Tex wanting to get away from the Rangers. Hicks in an idiot and so is Daniels. That team will never win.
Posted by: ozziethesaint | July 31, 2007 at 03:43 PM
It doesn't even matter if he wanted to leave Texas. Boras is going to use the fact that he rejected 140 million as a way of upping his price even more come negotiations.
Posted by: nom3k | July 31, 2007 at 03:45 PM
boras is a cancer to baseball.
Posted by: ChippySwans | July 31, 2007 at 03:46 PM
Well it's either the players or owners making the money. Can't blame Boras for getting top dollar for his clients.
Posted by: Teetz | July 31, 2007 at 03:48 PM
yea, you'd think the players know what they're getting with him though. if you sign with boras, you know he's going to get you the most money possible no matter what. if you want to have some dignity and loyalty, you can pick another agent.
boras is an asshole though
Posted by: boomshwa12 | July 31, 2007 at 03:48 PM
Well
I still think ATL could sign the guy. But damn will he be expensive.
Posted by: GoBoSox420 | July 31, 2007 at 03:53 PM
WTF
The Pirates just traded Rajai Davis and the infamous PTBN for Matt Morris...
Why does Pittsburgh need Matt Morris?

The Braves could probably afford paying someone like Tex $20M a year come 2009, because honestly, who else will be clogging up the payroll by then? But the truth is this, they'll either trade him before the 2008 deadline or let him walk for the draft picks because they have Kala Ka'aihue coming up through the minors for right about that time. His line at High-A ball this season: .298/.410/.583 with 22 HR (43 total XBH) in 309 AB. Oh, and that's on the heels of a 1.072 OPS in 228 AB at Rome in Low-A ball the year before.
Posted by: ejruiz777 | July 31, 2007 at 03:54 PM
i'm not saying i wouldn't be trying to do what he does...it's just boras the person that is the cancer.
Posted by: ChippySwans | July 31, 2007 at 03:55 PM
Hey, all you Braves fans understand this. Teixeira marches to the beat of the Scott Boras drum. Rest assured, he WILL hit the free agent market after 2008 and he WILL sign with the highest bidder. whatever you think about the players that the Braves gave up to get him, they are only getting him for 14 months. You're going to love Tex as a player. He is an outstanding first baseman. He will make your infield much better. And he is a very good hitter. You will enjoy the 14 months with Tex. Then you will be bidding against the Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers, etc. for his continued services. Good luck in the bidding. It will be steep. The Rangers tried to extend his contract and quickly realized that it was impossible. So they got what they could get because having Tex for another 14 months was not going to do anything for the Rangers. They are farther away than that in competing in the AL. So the Rangers did the right thing this time.

"His line at High-A ball this season: .298/.410/.583 with 22 HR (43 total XBH) in 309 AB."
He was playing in A ball at age 22. That's pretty bad.
He got moved up to AA and he's promptly gone 0 for 17. There's a huge leap from A to AA.

rangers fan, i agree that texas did the right thing in trading tex, however, it is not necessary for either team to "win" in a trade. i think js knows that the next 14 months will be his and bobby's last run with the braves. atlanta is in desperate times right now: 1. this will be andruw's last year.
2. chipper's and smoltz's last years as braves might be 2008.
3. attendance is dropping and interest of the braves team will dwindle after this season, with tbs dropping their contract.
something had to get done and this was the right move for both ballclubs. salty would have never been the regular 1st baseman or catcher for atlanta. andrus looks incredible, but no one will really know until 2011-2012. it's all about "need" and the braves needed to stabilize a position that has been shaky for years. i am happy that salty will get regular playing time and anxious to see him catching every day next year, but i'm also excited about august, september, and, hopefully, october braves baseball.

I think baseball should make a salary cap cause in about 5 years 22mil is probably going to be the average for players like Teixeria and the game is getting to be out of control there like no chance for low market teams like the D-rays, and Marlins to survive. I liked the game better when pros played it cause they loved the game instead of just for the money.
Posted by: ChiBears08' | July 31, 2007 at 04:30 PM
Ryan C, I agree completely. it was the right thing for both clubs. As I said, the Braves fans are going to love Teixeira. He is an outstanding player. and he might carry the Braves to two World Series championships. But he wasn't going to do that for the Rangers. They aren't close. And after 2008, Teixeira is going to sign with someone for over $20M per year. That is the way that baseball is now. The Rangers aren't going to play in that kind of Boras market. So they got what they could. A good trade for both clubs.

Baseball is definetly headed towards a lockout year. Its gonna happen. They have to get a salary cap in there. You really think they're gonna let it be the YanksSox for the rest of the century.?

that photo is a classic!!

Good riddence. He wanted out of Texas, so I'm not at all surprised he turned that deal down. Thank God he did, because the way Tom Hicks spends money, Tex and Michael Young would have put the cuffs on our payroll for the next 6-7 years. Good bye Mark, thanks for the prospects Atlanta.
Posted by: N41D | July 31, 2007 at 04:37 PM
N41D, I agree that the Rangers have had some problems in how they spend money. But their problem has been from over-spending. Cases in point: A-Rod and Chan Ho Park. In this case they did the right thing. They didn't create another A-Rod fiasco. Teixeira is going to get something close to A-Rod money after 2008 (assuming he has a good free agent year next year). That kind of money will wreck any payroll in baseball, outside of the usual big spenders. So let's give the Rangers a little credit this time. They saw the $ signs on the wall and made the most of the situation before it was too late. Now they just have to hope that these prospects work out. Good move for both teams.

Braves fans, enjoy how great of a player Teixeira is, but don't get sucked in. He comes off as a golden boy, but when he says, "Scott Boras works for me", just know he is full of crap.
Posted by: MonkeyBoots | July 31, 2007 at 05:23 PM
NOOO!! He has to come to the orioles in 2009!!!!
Posted by: tymyshwo | July 31, 2007 at 05:39 PM
What we need is some good old fashioned collusion!
