« Odds and Ends | Main | Needs and Luxuries: Oakland Athletics »
My apologies for the lack of posts the last couple of days. I went on a mini-vacation, and as you know this is a slow time for trade and signing rumors anyway. Things will pick up again in November.
In the meantime, let's use this post for suggestions on some topics you'd like to see covered here at MLBTR during September and October. Free agent player profiles and free agent position breakdowns are probably coming soon. Also I received a suggestion for breaking down each position in terms of needs. For example: who needs a catcher this winter, and which teams have a surplus?
Let me know any other ideas for posts for the next couple of months.

It'd be interesting to see you take teams and offer up 3 transactions (free agent signings or trades) that would turn them into a better team...
A little raw speculation is fun once and awhile.

what about some more GM profiles. Theo Epstien would be nice. And also the team outlooks are interesting.
Posted by: johnbuckformvp | September 03, 2007 at 03:21 PM
Maybe a team by team breakdown as to what they need to do in the offseason and what free agents and trades they might consider.
Posted by: astralpanda | September 03, 2007 at 03:52 PM
Braves get: Noah Lowry
Giants get: Edgar, Pope, and Ascaino
Braves get: Jon Garland
ChiSox get: Schafer, Smith, Reyes, and Yates or Prado

I would like to see a team needs, free agent list and where you think the top free agents will go and for how much. Also maybe a projected roster for each team in 2008.
Posted by: Royals #1 | September 03, 2007 at 04:08 PM
how about take a look at "top prospects" that are blocked and who they are blocked by. that was the scenario that got thome traded, and saltalamachia, so know if we can figure out who is beating down the door, and who is holding it shut, you can get a good idea as to who may be moved this offseason, or by tradedeadline next year.
Posted by: sniddly | September 03, 2007 at 04:31 PM
How more info on top prospects. maybe projecting future trades farther in the "future". ex. possible Johan, Peavy, or other big name players who have been rumored in trades.
Posted by: Derrick | September 03, 2007 at 05:03 PM
i have to agree with "westcoastbias" i think that would be cool
Posted by: kkingevan | September 03, 2007 at 05:05 PM
I'd love to see projected teams, and more specifically projected rotations. I would wanna see the the rotations projected because of teams like the Phillies, where there are a ton of options to fill three spots to fill it out.

I would like to hear what you think about a Dontrelle Willis trade? What would it take? A big league ready starter, a minor league position player, and something else useful?
Then... what sort of contract would he want from his new team? 4 years 44 Million?
Posted by: registereduser | September 03, 2007 at 05:16 PM
Hey, it'd be cool to have a september callup list and have deatils pertaining to possible MLB promotions. I just saw that newly drafted (6th overall) SP Ross Dewiler was called up to the majors by the Nats.
And that Jay Bruce has been told he is not getting called up. http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/prospects/?p=572
Is Pearce (1B - Pit) really the top offensive callup so far? Sad.
Stuff like that.

Some great ideas everyone has. Sniddly's idea sounds interesting. Are the Dodgers going to move Nomar with LaRoche waiting in the wings? Are the Mariners going to move Jeff Clement, or will Johjima be a midseason trade? What to do with Adam Jones? Will the Red Sox move Crisp to make room for Ellsbury? The list goes on and on...
Posted by: triumph | September 03, 2007 at 05:27 PM
Yeah, agree with Sniddly, and maybe all such situations ~ not just those for top prospects. Maybe just a team by team rundown with your thoughts on probable trade cansdates based on depth.
Like my Indians for instance brought up AsCab earlier than expected but he is possibly playing his way into the fullyime picture. Now the options seem unlimited with Barfield (2nd), Peralta (SS or maybe 3rd), Blake (3rd, OF non-tender), AsCab (SS or 2nd) or even FA. Love to hear if you heard anything, and if not then atleast your thoughts on situations like that which you see around the league.
Also maybe a rundown of all the contenders and team direction for next year. Will NY try to buy guys to fill holes at 1st, 2nd, C and the OF in an attempt to win it all or maybe take a year to play some kids and expect to just compete. Will the Yanks continue to try and go younger/cheaper? Or will the DBacks & Pads make moves to really improve themselves or just minor adjustments to stay in the pact without really adding payroll? You know, that kind of stuff...

All the talk of Dontrelle Willis lately got me thinking of a "Trades that could have been..." column. The specific example I'd used was during the 2005-2006 offseason Dontrelle to the Mets for Lastings Milledge, Aaron Heilman, and Brian Bannister. Imagine how that one would be smelling now? And it definetly could have happened. Would have been great for the Fish.
Posted by: MEddler | September 03, 2007 at 07:09 PM
It could have happened from the 2006 Mets perspective anyway, Benifest probably wouldn't have thought that was enough. Obviously, he could have had those three though easily, and it would be looking pretty brilliant right now.
Posted by: MEddler | September 03, 2007 at 07:10 PM
Maybe do a top prospects thing for each team right after the WS.
Posted by: jmonahan7 | September 03, 2007 at 08:20 PM
why would we trade Dontrelle in the division and plus how would that of helped us, we get a CF that hasn't had consistent playing time in the majors, a washed up reliver/spot starter, and bannister who isn't that great. Milledge isn't that great why do you think you guys use him as a trading chip so much?
Posted by: Barroid_Bonds | September 03, 2007 at 08:24 PM
once the playoffs start i'd like to see a prediction thing with some analysis of who ur picking and why...and i liek the idea of the things about players who have young talent behind em
Posted by: ryan2434 | September 03, 2007 at 09:08 PM
my bad..thought the first post didnt post right
Posted by: ryan2434 | September 03, 2007 at 09:10 PM
i think u should do a playoff prediction thing, with analysis on who ur picking in each series, how many games, and why.plus, i like the idea of speculating on what will happen to players like coco who have young players comming up behind them

Yeah, because your last place Marlins definitely couldnt use Brian Bannisters 12 wins and 3.16 era( albeit I cant believe the success he has had and dont believe it will continue), or a former top 10 prospect in centerfield, one to patrol the huge centerfield and has shown he can compete right now at age 22, with big upside, and the Marlins dominant bullpen couldnt use Heilmans 3.25 era or his 1.13 whip or his 50/15 K/BB ratio, not to mention he is a horse. Why give up a a guy with a 5 plus era with a 1.62 whip for that. I mean, the Marlins obviously dont need any pieces at all, because they have no holes and are ready to win right now.
Posted by: nrmax88 | September 03, 2007 at 09:12 PM
Not to mention Dontrelle is leaving as soon as he can. He feeds off energy, he doesnt get that from the 175 people at the stadium every night. He has always had pretty good success pitching in bigger market cities like Chicago and NY.
Posted by: nrmax88 | September 03, 2007 at 09:19 PM
Thanks nrmax, couldn't have put it better.
Milledge may not be a huge impact player, but he'd be doing a far better job in CF than anyone on the Marlins. He might not be an all-star yet, but he may also be one day, plus his play in Center is far better than his play in the corners. Again, he's not Andruw or Beltran, but he's definetly above average with both good range and a good arm to go with a quick bat and lots of intensity.
Bannister has 12 wins for one of the worst teams in baseball, and an ERA WAY above average for the AL. Sure its hard to argue he'll develop into an ace, but its also hard to argue with his results.
Heilman's a wild card unless you assume he'd have remained a reliever. At the time, the Marlins probably would have considered starting him.
Still though, I mean, just based on stats, you wouldn't swap D-Train for Bannister right now? Plus get a big upside outfielder who's best position happens to be the Marlins greatest position weakness and another interesting MLB tested pitcher, while still actually DUMPING salary??? Even if the play of Milledge, Bannister, and Heilman in a Marlins uni is below average, they still would have won on the deal. They might not be in the race today, but I bet they'd be a heck of a lot closer.
And, as a Mets fan, I'm quite glad in hindsight that such a deal never happened, but I'm 100% positive Omar would have jumped on it.
See how a Column like this would be interesting Tim ;).

Oh, and the reason Milledge was such a big trading chip was because the Mets had two other OF prospects they expected to catch him soon.
Right now however, Milledge is pretty close to untouchable. He still has learning to do, especially in handling breaking balls from righties, but his bat is quite fast.
The reason his name was tossed around last offseason so much was because it was widely believe his on and off the field antics had hurt his image. However, that's barely been an issue this season. He's filled into his body and played a focused and energetic game without rubbing anyone the wrong way. The only reason he hasn't played more is because the Mets are playing somewhere between $15-20 million to Alou and Green, and because of an early season injury.

I think you should talk about A-ROD possiablity coming to the cubs. I think he would be a good fit, he knows Lou and has said lou's wife is like his own mother
fill us in on the possiable owner of the cubs also
A LOT MORE CUBS NEWS.
THANKS

But do we know if ARod likes "his own mother"?
Posted by: snowmanny | September 03, 2007 at 10:59 PM
Only if she's super rich or a stripper from my understanding...
Tim, last thing we probably need is an "ARod may..." thread ~ with NY media there will be thousands added to the millions already out there now in the coming weeks...
Posted by: darkstar1661 | September 03, 2007 at 11:56 PM
I'm torn on what I want A-Rod to do. On the one hand I am not sure if I'll be interested in every twist and turn of his saga if he opts out and explores the market. On the other hand it would spark interest and keep traffic strong.

I would be interested in seeing that list of players in spring training you had listed who had some type of offseason improvement. (eye surgery, strength training, working with personal trainer, etc.) to see if any of them ended up having increased value.
Posted by: ProjectMayhem | September 04, 2007 at 08:54 AM
The spring training analysis would be a good one though that'd end up on RotoAuthority.com.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | September 04, 2007 at 11:11 AM
what about analzying where you think every team will be in like 5-8 years like about their young prospects and old guys leaving and possible trades that might happen
it would be hard and take a long time but definitly be interesting to see
