| Tigers Rumors: Rogers, Jones, Jenkins »

Some random tidbits that didn't get their own posts today...
- The Rockies picked up Aaron Cook's $4.5MM option as expected. The bigger question is whether they can sign him long-term, maybe for three years. They also passed on LaTroy Hawkins for $3.75MM but may still sign him.
- The Rangers agreed to a two-year contract with reliever Joaquin Benoit for two years and $6MM. He would've hit free agency after 2008. Smart move would be to let him rack up 10-15 saves next season and then trade him for something good.
- The Braves aren't expected to get their next center fielder through free agency, and Terence Moore suggests trading for Ken Griffey Jr. to fill the position. More reasonable targets might be David DeJesus or Coco Crisp.
- The Royals may yet retain David Riske, who wants a multiyear deal and would like to stay. They'll definitely offer him arbitration, since he's a Type B free agent. Also, longtime Royal Mike Sweeney might finally play elsewhere.
- Free agent Shawn Chacon is looking to start in 2008, and he'll make over $4MM.
- Charley Walters says the Twins won't pursue Barry Bonds. If Bonds is to land in the AL, the Orioles, Devil Rays, Royals, Angels, and A's may be his only options.
- McCovey Chronicles suggests a Noah Lowry for Bill Hall swap.
Griffey can't play center anymore, and don't need him long term since Hernandez and Schafer are in the system.

Moore, seriously?
Between Chipper and Hampton we already have enough expensive toys with too many breakable moving parts.

I suppose we could put Griffey in RF and move Franceour to CF for a season or two, but I'd rather trade for Coco Crisp instead. He would cost less money, will cost less to get (Devine?), will provide better overall defense (keeping Franceour RF), and because he's signed for a reasonable price through 2010, we could possibly flip him once Schafer/Hernandez/Jones are ready.

By the way, now that Cameron has been busted for using a banned substance, there is no way the Braves sign him.

"[Benoit] would've hit free agency after 2008. Smart move would be to let him rack up 10-15 saves next season and then trade him for something good."
Well... they still could . If halfway through the season he appears to be a quasi-reliable closer, someone should like him for $4.5m over 1 1/2 years.

Thundersticks, I think that a Crisp-for-Devine trade sounds solid for both sides. The Sox could stand to lose Crisp's salary with Ellsbury waiting, and they could definitely use another reliable 6th or 7th-inning guy. But I don't think the Sox brass would go for it. They'll probably look for a bigger bounty.

metafrantic - you're right, but then again, everyone and his brother knows they are wanting to dump him at this point, so his value couldn't be lower. His line last year was .268/.330/.382, which is not great.
However, on a team like the Braves, if you bat him 8th and get the solid D in CF, he's just what the doctor ordered. He's scheduled to make $4.75M in 08, $5.75M in 09 and an $8M club option (with $0.5M buyout) in 10. That's $11M for 2 two years (assuming the option is not picked up). Griffey's cost would be comparable, but for only one year.

I agree, we could get crisp and be just fine in center, but I say that dejesus is an attractive option is well. He is not as good as crisp in center, but is reasonable, he is also cheaper, and may be better offensively. The Wild Card is that Dayton Moore knows the atlanta system well, so we could probably get dejesus cheaper than we could crisp (i.e. it was going to cost seattle wladimir balentin to get dotel, but instead moore took davies for him.)

as a braves fan, i would be all over devine for crisp in a heartbeat
i don't know if the red sox would be that quick to pull the trigger on the deal for a completely unproven pitcher on the major league level, though

Yeah that's what I meant metafrantic...I wasnt implying it was a bad signing. The cost certainty for '09 increases his value and some saves would further.

and anything terence moore suggests is pretty worthless
this guy is still complaining that we traded away david justice
Posted by: dudetheplayer | October 31, 2007 at 10:45 PM
Moore is useless for intelligent baseball commentary. Actually, pretty much the whole AJC is outside of David O'Brien, who's really quite good.
Also, dunno why people are so anxious to show Devine the door. I really think we can get away dealing a C-level prospect for him, or at least someone in the low-minors and not in the system's top 10. He's completely useless for Boston, he's coming off an awful year with the bat, and everyone who needs a CF can go after one of the tons of big-name FAs. I say toss Boston a low-minors pitcher and don't ask for any salary relief. It'll happen.
Also, acquiring Crisp would give a nice "full circle" feel to the whole Andy Marte trade(s) two years ago.

I'd have to pass on the Lowry for Hall proposition. Lowry's peripherals are poor, and he was even helped by AT&T. I'd rather have Hennessey or Correia, who are both the same age as Lowry, instead.

i am almost certain the braves will not trade for Griffey. A) the would be taking on MORE salary which they really dont want to do B) they would have to give up alot more to get him. dont get me wrong i would love for the braves to have him but its not going to happen. I would prefer crisp for his defense and bat him 8th. i am more about letting lilbridge be the guy for a year or at least give him the shot to be that guy. i really think any trade made will be for another pitcher.

I agree kgbaseball. I don't want a pitcher who walked the same amount that he struck out.

Are you implying that Benoit is not good?
Call me crazy, I'd think a young reliever with excellent peripherals and a reasonable contract, who actually had a high BABIP is a player the typically pitching-starved Rangers would want to keep.
Posted by: bobo | November 01, 2007 at 08:46 AM
Benoit has been very good - in fact, he may have peaked. I agree that this is the time to trade him - possibly for an outfielder. The Rangers need 3 OF starters, as Tim dicussed in 'Needs and Luxuries'. Looks like the team has bigger needs than a closer, and that one or two could be filled through a trade.

I agree that Devine would pretty much be a nonfactor with the Red Sox. I do like the idea of getting Crisp though, since his production will be better than Andruw's was this year--only we'll expect it and not stick him the cleanup spot for half the season--and he'll play great defense. Still, I wouldn't give up Devine for him, especially on basically a one-year rental until one of our minor leaguers is ready.

What would Dejesus cost in trade from the Royals?
From a fish perspective he had a bad year but could be a perfect fit in CF For us.
