« Ms Sending Bavasi To Japan For Kuroda? | Main | Rivera Agrees To Deal With Yanks »
UPDATE: Ken Rosenthal notes that the Astros are close to a deal with Geoff Blum, and believes the Astros are behind both the Rockies and Cubs for Matsui.
Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News is reporting that Kaz Matsui "appears headed to the Astros." Maybe Ed Wade will save the Cubs from themselves. The Cubs were reportedly going to offer Matsui a three-year pact.
Ringolsby adds an interesting twist: the Astros and Rockies could swap second basemen. The Rockies like Chris Burke, and he will probably be deemed expendable if Matsui is signed. Seems to me there's a decent chance Burke matches Matsui in production next year at a much cheaper price.
Ringoslby also notes that Jason Kendall is "finalizing a deal with Milwaukee." Tom Haudricourt confirms the deep stages of the talks. To me this seems to be another case of change for the sake of change. Maybe the Brewers weren't pleased with Johnny Estrada, but Kendall has his own glaring deficiences as a starter.

Matsui will be a disaster. Hell, the Mets were willing to play an aged, slowing Luis Castillo $25 million over 4 years so they could avoid Matsui! Just kidding (kind of).
Joking aside, I fear Matsui will be a disaster. His home/road splits for his 2 years with the Rockies were terrible.
2007 Coors .330/.381/.482
2006 Coors .411/.476/.500
2007 non-Coors .249/.304/.333
2006 non-Coors .230/.257/.364
At least he was fairly consistent, and he does play good defense. Suffice to say, unless the Astros move to Denver, I'm pretty scared about a Matsui signing.
Plus, as concerned as I was about Castillo's durability, in Matsui's 4 years in the US, he has never played more than 114 games or had more than 460 at-bats. Not exactly Ripken or Gehrig.
Matsui and Burke would be an interesting platoon, since Burke still kills lefties and Matsui does better against righties, but the Astros wouldn't sign Matsui to platoon him. I really think the Astros would just be signing a more expensive version of Chris Burke.
Doesn't Ed Wade (or any other GM outside Colorado) know how to look at a basic stat sheet to figure this stuff out?

I still don't think Matsui will be horrible in '08...but if the Astros want him, no big loss for Cubs fans. DeRosa played well @ 2nd next year, and if Fokudome comes across the pond and lands in Right Field @ Wrigley, the Cubs would be able to play DeRosa @ 2nd and have KF in the line-up as well.
All this being said, I still hope Pie can figure out how to be a lead-off hitter. If we can move Soriano down the line-up, we're a better team, imo.

Cub fans everywhere are breathing a huge, collective sigh of relief...

Does this mean Estrada would be non-tendered? I'd rather the Mets have Estrada to resort to than Kendall anyway. Pretty much the same situation, except Estrada's younger and has some marginal pop.

Cincy 11-
Ponder Garza for Hamilton.
It definately has the Twin connection, and relatively fair swap.

Garza is worth way more than Hamilton. A better track record - Hamilton isn't established enough considering his past.
A trade of Dunn or Griffey could be in the cards though.

Im not sure the Reds can get any good pitching for Dunn of Griffey.
Maybe a throw in of Freel?

If Burke "kills" lefties as you say, why is the GM so gung ho on signing a new 2B?? Oh yeah because aside from one playoff game, Burke has been unimpressive.

If any team gives him more than 2-3 mil a year, they will be disappointed. I ve heard 3yr/15mil for him. i dont know why so many teams want him.
