« Twins Willing To Trade Garza | Main | Jake Peavy For Phil Hughes and Melky Cabrera? »
Matt Clement is an interesting rehab project. The 33-year old had rotator cuff and labrum surgery, and was last seen topping out at 87 in September. With the right strengthening work, plus the National League, he could be a nice surprise in 2008.
I'm sure he wants to start, so there wouldn't be a fit with the Red Sox. Nick Cafardo says the Padres and Royals are in on him so far. It wouldn't be surprising to see the Nationals get involved. I think Clement will land in San Diego with $2-3MM guaranteed and maybe another $3MM in incentives. He came up through the Padres' system, taking his lumps before being traded for Mark Kotsay. He's going to have to reinvent himself as a finesse guy with good control. Wade Miller was a somewhat similar case; he wasn't able to do it.

WARNING: Clements arm is just about to fall off. The only way it can be saved is if Oscar Goldman turns him into the six million dollar man

Matt Clement will be a dominant #4 SP for the Padres in '08. Along with some combination of Clay Hensley, Justin Germano, Jack Cassell or Brett Tomko, Kevin Towers may end up having baseball's best rotation next year.

well, he has to sign first, and the padres always had a good pitching rotation, one of the best, but its never helped them anyway

How has it not helped them?
It hasn't taken them past the first round of the playoffs in recent years but it's a little silly to say it hasn't helped them.
Without their pitching, they're not a playoff team in '05 & '06 and they don't come within a game of the playoffs in '07. So, how does it not help them?

WestCoastBias - your name says it all.
How can anyone count on Clement to do anything in 08? While he would be a nice surprise people banking on him will most likely be extremely disappointed.

it doesnt win the world series, thats all.
dont get so upset, but its true. besides, they didnt make the playoffs this year and this was probably the best rotation they have had in a long time. your two best pitchers blow the tie breaker against the rockies, Peavy and Hoffman

I think Clement could really be very good for them, especially in that park. Stuff wise, he is one of the best available. I do think he needs to get his fastball back in the low 90's if he is going to stick in a rotation somewhere though.

nevermind the reconstructive surgery from his shoulder to the tip of his middle finger, ever since he took the beaner off the head in 05, he has never been the same. its like he is gun shy to throw the heat in fear he will take it off the head again. that + artificial arm = bad sad news, as a sox fan, trust me, nobody around here even really remembers that he played for us and that it cost us 9 million for him to NOT play this year

Matt Clement is not going to suddenly find control after this long injury-induced lay-off. That was his biggest problem with the Sox...walks. His fastball before the injury was 89-90 although he does have a nice slider people can just lay-off it. I would not get too excited.

Clement is a born again Christian. They Royals Gm and new manager are as well. I wonder what kind of impact that would have on his decision about KC?

To be honest I don't think we had the best rotation in 07. Sure we had Peavy, Young and Maddux but we didn't have true back end of rotation guys. Cassel did the best job out of all the guys we used on those 4,5 spots though. Anyways, if we add Clement to the rotation and he proves he has his stuff again I think there won't be anyone who can beat us with this type of rotation. Clement at 3 million is a reasonable price so lets hope KT pulls this deal off.

A fifth starter with Clement's upside certainly does not scare me
I personally believe Jennings could have some success for the Padres as well

Maybe the Royals could go the Dotel route with Clement and hope that he recovers. If he was operational he'd be a nice back end pickup for a contender. The Royals could pick up some farm depth in return.
