« Law: Top 10 Trade Candidates | Main | Odds and Ends: Fukumori, Rivera, Haerther, Walker »
It seemed pretty official, but it appears that Yorvit Torrealba will not be behind the plate for the Mets next year. Sources started whispering this morning that the deal was falling apart, and the Mets brass confirmed it this afternoon.
"The Mets did not reach an agreement with Yorvit Torrealba," Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said, "and there are no current negotiations."
Torrealba's agent, Melvin Roman, declined to comment on the situation. Looks like Omar might be getting on the phone with Paul LoDuca sometime soon. Yorvit was looking at a three-year, $14.4 million deal with the Mets.

That's a good thing for the Mets. No doubt.

I don't really have a clue as to why the Mets are so high on Torrealba. Defense? Game-calling? Maybe. But he's not an offensive catcher and the Mets are not going to help themselves with an offensive black hole behind the plate.

Funny, Stephen, you should mention an offensive blackhole. The Mets, before today, were looking at a situation with Yorvit Torrealba as their starting catcher and David Eckstein as their second baseman. Those two moves would make the Mets substantially worse in 2008 than they were in 2007.

My guess is they wanted to give him a base contract like Castro's (probably a bit nicer) with a hefty vesting option for the third year based on PA. This way, if Castro did look like a better option, he could get a significant increase in playing time with Torrealba becoming a frequent backup, or the Mets could find help outside the organization if they have any trade chips left for the deadline. There's probably another team that already has three years on the table. Not sure who, Marlins maybe? Seems like a big commitment.

This is crazy. So many words wasted on Yorvit Torrealba...
Now time to waste more words on Paul Lo Duca, for two more years... ughhh

I don't see how you can assume the Mets would be any worse then they would be if they kept Lo Duca (A 36 year old past his prime who put up miserable numbers last year) and Luis Castillo (Pretty much the same player as David Eckstein). Sure, Eckstein and Torrealba aren't exactly exciting options, but they're at the very least tredding water with the Offense the Mets had last season.

Thank God. Just get Lo Duca Back.

I am glad the mets didnt sign yorvit. I think hes a little overrated. I think lo duca is good for the mets. he can bat 2nd and hit for 300 avg
