« Phillies Re-Sign J.C. Romero | Main | Tigers Inquire About Willis »

Reds Have Roughly $6MM To Spend?

Reds beat writer John Fay takes his guess at the team's 2008 payroll: around $75MM.  By his estimate, their current players will tie up $69MM of that.  That would leave just $6MM to spend on free agents this winter, unless someone is traded to clear payroll.

The Reds' need is pitching, both of the starting and relieving variety.  Carlos Silva would be a nice addition to the rotation.  If Wayne Krivsky is creative with the contract he could probably sign him for 4/40 and still stay around $75MM for '08.

Joe Christensen recently reported on the teams interested in Silva, but the Reds weren't one of them.  He listed the Mets, Phillies, Royals, and Tigers.  My money is on the Mets or Phillies.

I'm sure Krivsky will kick the tires on him, but I can't imagine Silva doing very well with the Reds' likely infield defense (or lack thereof) this year.

I guess it doesn't matter though; wherever Silva ends up, he won't be worth it.

Think they can sign a 1 month contract with ARod?

No way the Phils sign Silva. Not with the $4M wasted on Romero. I'm sorry, but Romero is, at most, worth $2.5M.

They should be moving Adam Dunn. They won't win in 08 and don't have the room to sign him to a long-term contract. I know he has a no-trade clause but I'm sure he could be enticed (especially if the new team wanted to sign him to a long term extension).

That would then leave them with almost $20m to spend and they would receive back a package of players.

"Think they can sign a 1 month contract with ARod?" maybe a day st1ckboy

$30mil per year = $185,185 per game.

4 ABs per game = $46,296 per AB

3.8 pitches per AB = $12,183 per pitch

Of course it's a little off considering he also plays defense, but nonetheless, it's disgusting.

I would like a Silva signing as long as the price isn't insane. I think the Reds D and that ballpark would be great for him. Phillips/Gonzo up the middle are one of the best combinations in the game. Also, I expect Dunn and Phillips to have long-term deals done soon.

Miguel Cabrera could be a nice upgrade offensively at 3rd... with a couple of good pitching prospects to choose from (not including Homer Bailey), plus Encarnacion and Hamilton, why haven't they been mentioned in the Cabrera sweepstakes?

Use this 5 million to sign David Riske and Scott Linebrick. Two good middle relievers to add to the pen and add righty depth.

Trade Hamilton for Garza straight up.

Use Griffey's money to sign a pitcher after the 08 season.

09 Here we come

I would still like to see Cincinnati make a run at Johan Santana or Dontrelle Willis. I think they could use their depth of young outfield talent to get a deal done. A deal would likely include Hamilton or Bruce + an additional player. This would be an hefty price to pay, but in order to get pitching in this league you have to give up talent.
I believe a starting pitching acquisition of such magnitude would result it a trickle down effect that could go a long way to resolving their pitching woes. I.E. Move a potential 5th starter (Matt Belisle) into a middle relief role.
Never the less these are just the ramblings of a beleaguered Reds fan.

I think the Reds Payroll will probably be around 80 million and yes I know that is only an additional 5 million but that will help out for the relief pitching aqcusistions. A starter is going to have to come via trade. I kinda hate how quiet Krisky is with anything he is working on. I don't think Dunn is going anywhere and I would praise the baseball gods if we could get something decent for Griffey. I know he has no trade but I would love to see him go. That would give us a chunk on money to work with too. I like Griffey and I know he had a good year but I am ready to let Bruce take over in the Outfield.

The Reds owner is looking to spend from what I read in Cincinnati but the pitchers have to to be sinkerball pitchers in GABP to be good (or Aaron Harang) Griffey will retire a Mariner, Its only a matter of time before Gonzalez loses his job to Keppinger, I love the REDS but they are recovering from BAD management ( the deal with The Nationals a few seasons back) not trading Arroyo last season to The Braves for a young up and coming guy, Everyone seems to think they need starters but there real problem is their bullpen, while weathers does a decnt job, lets face it he s more of set-up guy , maybe try Belisle in that role next spring or bring back everyday eddie. gotta Love the NEW RED MACHINE!!!

I'd love to have Silva... maybe krivsky can pull it off.
