| Rockies Bump Up Hawkins Offer »

Free agents' decisions on whether to accept their teams' offers of arbitration are rolling in.
- Eric Gagne told the Red Sox that he won't their offer of arbitration. The Boras camp had sent signals otherwise, but it was an idle threat. He wants that multiyear deal or at least a chance to close. The Red Sox get a delicious sandwich pick for their dalliance with Gagne. Could've been more, if Gagne was lights out for them and snagged Type A status.
- Mark Loretta accepted; Trever Miller declined. Loretta should make $3MM+ to take on a utility role. The Astros could always still trade him to a team looking for second base help. As for Miller, he could still return. The Astros will get a sandwich pick if he leaves.
- Ron Mahay declined the Braves' offer. No surprise since he's looking for three years. You have to consider their sandwich pick as an added benefit of the Teixeira trade.
- Aaron Rowand is expected to decline, which is a formality since he's going to get at least three years. As a Type A, the Phils probably hope he ends up with the Yankees somehow.

Red Soxs fans also hope he ends up with the Yankees somehow. Hopefully two cities worth of psychic energy get a deal done.

Nice to at least get a draft pick from Gagne, least that is something.
RS did need the supplemental pick, always want to have some early picks.
I did mention earlier the Sox could leat Lowell, Schilling, and Gagne go, and end up with 6 of the first 50 picks.. oh well..
Arbritation offers for free agents are pretty much only about draft picks now right?

"Arbritation offers for free agents are pretty much only about draft picks now right?"
Yes, unless your name is Tony Graffanino.
After managing to suck prolifically enough to cost the Red Sox a draft pick, Gagne's last ignoble act was to thumb his nose at arbitration when it actually would have been worth the Red Sox while.
So, recap:
1. Singlehandedly blow three games in the course of a week. Check.
2. Cost team a high draft pick. Check.
3. Bail on team for a well-deserved chance to close. Check.

I don't know... the sandwich pich might be worth more than anything the Sox could get in trade for Gagne. They'd have to pay him a minimum 4.8m. What could they really get for him after his disaster in Boston? I suppose some team looking for a closer might pony up a good prospect.

Makes you wonder if a borderline player ever sandbagged a few months to increase their value in free agency since teams are so draft pick oriented now.
