Astros Interested In Prior

According to Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle, the Astros have contacted Mark Prior's agent.  Prior is a free agent for the first time in his career after the Cubs non-tendered him on Wednesday.  By the way, I've previously erroneously named Prior's current agent as Scott Boras.  That changed at some point - he's with John Boggs now.

Astros GM Ed Wade admitted to his interest in Prior but not much else.  He told McTaggart that a lot of teams have contacted Boggs about Prior (nine, to be exact).  Prior figures to miss a few months of the 2008 season due to his April '07 shoulder surgery.  Wade told McTaggart he contacted a couple of non-tendered players; here's the list if you want to guess.

The Cubs didn't feel Prior would return to his "high-level form" until 2009.  They insisted on a club option for that year, and their offer was "not received well" by Prior and his agent.

Ahhh, baseball chatter not related to Mitchell...

If I were any team GM, I'd try to sign Prior to a Lieber-like contract like the Yanks did a few years back. Incentive based with a team option for the 2nd year. Let him get healthy in the bullpen, stretch out and eventually back into the rotation. That's just me, though. Too soon to send this guy to the scrap heap, unless, of course, his shoulder really resembles spaghetti.

I agree.

Chances are, though, Prior won't look to sign an incentive based deal.

Mark Prior has Camel Toe.

According to all reports, his latest complaint is his pussy hurts.

@cubbyrick

Think Prior's agent can get a mandatory team GYN into his contract?

Possibly. I heard his agent yesterday already fudging on his highly anticipated return to the majors. He pronounced that he will be ready to pitch in the majors by May 1, but if you wanted to be conservative, maybe by after the All-star break. I think he needs a clause in his contract that he won't have to pitch at "a certain time of the month."

Cubbyrick, then he'll get along wonderfully with Pavano

They deserve each other.

Yeah, the article in the Sun-Times either yesterday or the day before quoted his agent as saying something like, "The doctors are saying he should be ready by May 1st, but it may be a few more months." A few more months puts things back in the offseason. Nice.

Right. And then he will get sick with food poisoning on New Years Eve and won't be able to work for a couple of weeks and it will throw off his throwing and by the second week in spring training, he will be behing the other pitchers. Nothing serious though. How many times did we hear this story over the past five years.

Might not be a bad idea for the Astros to take a gander a Prior's medical reports.

If he can be signed cheaply with an option for 2009, it couldn't hurt to give him a shot. Kind of a high-risk high-reward move like the Cubs did with Wade Miller a few years ago.

If the Astros do sign him, I'd be cheering hard for him to return to form, cause I know the Cub fans would really hate that...

I hope he gets on the Astros or Reds so (if he ever actually pitches) we can rake a few of his straight, 90 mph meat balls. He's been nothing but meat since '04.

you have no idea astrosfan...As a Cubs fan..the reason I wanted to keep him is the fear that he would show up later and be an Ace for a team like the Astros or mainly the Cardinals. That would be a nightmare...

Aduncaroo, I felt the same way. Still might happen. The problem is we've been waiting for the last three seasons for that Ace. Cubs just had to move on.

Don't worry, there is no way he will be an ace for anybody. If/when he ever takes the mound, he didn't want to be here anyway. The Cubs will rock him.

astrosfan,

If Prior could be signed cheaply with an option for 09 he'd still be a Cub.

He's got to be talking one year deal. With the kind of loyalty he's shown the Cubs it's really a wonder any team has interest in signing him to a deal only to watch him sellout to the highest bidder as soon as he's healthy.

For some reason I still think he signs a 1MM contract with the Cubs. It doesn't make any sense given the bad blood, but I just got this feeling...

Mark Prior = Wade Miller

He's done.

Prior's gone and good riddance.... some other team can pay his medical bills and manicures.

I hope whatever team picks him up is ready to implement the towel drill into their regular routine.

Well put, Astros fan. Nice Wade Miller reference.
