Barry Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, said this evening that his client still wants to play in 2008 despite his legal troubles. It seems that his trial is unlikely to begin until after the season ends, so he'll be available.
A team willing to take on the baggage should be given a huge discount. Maybe a half price deal - $8MM or so. Signing Barry might be unpopular with the fanbase, but winning would probably overrule it.

I really can't think of anyone who wants the "luggage" Barry will undoubtedly bring even in light of the exchange for a big bat in the lineup and the subsequent winning.

Cardinals should sign him.
this allows to trade duncan and some other pieces for a good SP.
in 09 your outfield will be ok cause rasmus will be ready and you get a good draft pick for bonds.

"What league you been playing in?"
"California Penal"
"Never heard of it, how'd you get to be playing there?"
"Stole a car*"

OK fine, bring him back one more year. Screw the rebuilding project. We've lived with him this long, whats 1 more year

samael88: I'm pretty sure you'd only get a draft pick for Bonds if someone actually signed him again, although I might be wrong.
I don't see anyone signing him in 09. You know, the jail thing, and the 100 years old thing...
Posted by: SrMeowMeow | December 05, 2007 at 09:58 PM
Yeah you only get a pick if he signs with another team. Which he wont. So draft picks would take no part in signing Bonds.
I still don't think he'll find a job though.

As much as I dislike Bonds, I would love to see the Twins sign him. The fan base here is so welcoming for the most part (unless you're an ex-MN R.O.Y. who left for the Yankees). I think it would be great to see Barroids hit some over the baggy in right. Also, how great would it be to see Hunter rob Barry of a home run at the Metrodome on Opening Day!

I much as I question his presence on the young club, I would love to see the Indians get him. They seem to be a real tight nit group so maybe he wouldnt be too much of a problem for them, plus many of his teammate have actually loved him being around. They could play him in LF most of the time with J-Mike as his replacement. Otherwise, have Pronk take a couple days at 1B when he needs some rest. His Bat is much better than any other out there, it would be a 1 year deal so its not a longterm problem and having him in the playoffs could be a huge difference maker!

If the Drays are really serious about loading up and trying to contend this year, then they should look at Bonds as a DH.
Ditto for the Tigers, but he'd share left with Sheffield.

Jukee, I completely agree with you. Barry Bonds although he may be a little negative clubhouse guy, but he is just what the twins need. Imagine Bonds at DH, and if the twins trade santana to the red sox,
we would have a lineup of
Crisp-S
Mauer-L
Bonds-L
Delmon-R
Morneau-L
Cuddyer-R
Buscher-L
Harris-R
Casilla/Punto S
Thats a pretty solid lineup, and if we trade nathan we can upgrade 3b/ss which would be nice.
Sign Barry!

Rays
Cardinals
Twins
Indians
Orioles
Tigers
For a guy no one wants, their sure is alot of intrest in him. Anyone else think he can help a team make that leap into the postseason. How about GM's. Someone's going to take that chance this year. And he'll fill seats. And the giants get draft picks...

An AL contender w/ open OF/DH spots should definitely pick up Barry. I'd love to see him back w/ Leyland in Detroit (best lineup ever?). Also, the Angels could have gotten better production for much cheaper by picking up Barry to play DH and some LF for $8-$10 million rather than $90 million for Hunter.
While Barry is old, at DH he could play 120-130 games. His numbers are still up there, better than all but a handful of baseball players (per AB). Obviously the headaches aren't worth it for a non-contender, but he is one of the few difference-makers out there who could take a contending team to the World Series or a .500 team to the playoffs.
As an admittedly biased Giants fan, I want to point out that Barry has never been a problem in the clubhouse. His teammates have always stood by him, and been friendly with him. He may be a jerk to the media, but he's not with his teammates. Several players who have come to the Giants over the years have pointed out how much more open he is with young players than other superstars they've played with. Its the media and the fans who hate Bonds, not the players.
Over his decade plus on the Giants, he had a total of two issues I can think of with teammates: a fight with Danny Darwin in 1998 during a losing streak and his long-running feud with Jeff Kent. Of course, Kent has had a feud with just about every black teammate he's had, so I think we can take that one with a grain of salt.
The only issue for a team picking up Barry will be the reaction from the fans. However, its possible (though unlikely) that there will be a little more perspective and sanity once the Mitchell Report comes out and people outside of San Francisco begin to realize that Barry wasn't the only one juicing.

I too would like to see Bonds in MN. As long as we keep Patrick Reusse away from the man, you could see a total media turnaround, which would be fun. Dealing with LENIII, Charley Walters, and Sid would be so much different from the Bay Area reporters.

I would like to see Selig finally step in and suspend Bonds under his whole 'good of the game' discretion his has. This bum deserves to be shown the door...

If Bonds plays... he'll be an Athletic. The owner wants him, the players want him, the A's have enough payroll to do a 1-year deal (esp taking into account the $$ he'll bring in), and Barry won't have to move.
Now all they have to do is sell him on the white cleats hahah

He can play with my balls in '08.
