Cardinals Rumors: Rolen, Feliz, Capuano

UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 9:01pm: About four teams have talked to the Cards about Rolen, perhaps including the Brewers, Giants, and Rangers.

UPDATE, 12-3-07 at 6:38pm: Tom Haudricourt breaks down the Rolen to Milwaukee situation in detail.  Talks are ongoing but Doug Melvin doesn't think there's anything serious yet.

FROM 12-3-07 at 5:42pm:

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Joe Strauss has an update from the Winter Meetings.

  • Strauss notes, as Ken Rosenthal did, that Scott Rolen and Pedro Feliz have the same agents.  This somehow makes Feliz a candidate to replace Rolen at third base.
  • The Brewers are in the lead for Rolen, with Chris Capuano still being mentioned as the likely return.  The Cards will cover Rolen's salary to a certain extent depending on who they get back.

Why do they want Rolen? Don't they have superstud Ryan Braun?

@ Jeffrey W.

Ryan Braun is one of the worst defensive 3B there are in MLB. Even with what he is doing to improve on his skills so far will make a difference, but he'll be sub par in the category of defense. Atleast while he plays at 3B.

Either one pleas sign Feliz. That way the Giants get rid of his crappy Avg/OPS and get a draft pick

Yeah, Braun is a horrible adventure in the field, and I'm sure Rolen could help him improve there. But would Rolen just be a backup, substitute player for the Brew Crew? They can't and won't take Braun's bat out of the lineup no matter how brutal he is at third.

The Brewers would put Rolen at third base and place Braun in the left field.

Tim, I think you mean "the Rolen to Milwaukee situation", not St. Louis.

I would want Bill Hall back for Rolen as well as Capuano, which would mean we would have to include another player of course. hopefully someone outta the bullpen. Anybody but Izzy would be okay with me.

lol @ STLknows

and i want Santana for Melky straight up lol

Angels are interested in trading Juan Rivera to the Yankees for A-Rod, assuming that NY picks up 100% of A-Rods contract.

Rolen is a high risk, high reward player. If he is healthy, he is one of the best in the game at third. Problem is, he probably won't be healthy. The Cards would be lucky to get Capuano for him.

I'm not sure if it's a very smart idea to write Cappy off after one (very) crappy season. Rolen is high risk, but as someone else pointed out, high reward. This trade is very interesting to me.

Rolen isn't "High risk" he's very low, he's had one injury in his career, with a follow on injury due to a bad surgeon with his scar tissue, do I assume he'll have great numbers as he did from 04-06, doubt it, but do I see him atleast close to what he was at, absolutely.

Rolen High Risk -- nope. Is Rolen a low to medium risk, sure. It isn't a question whether or not Rolen will be better next season its a question of when in the season.

Rolen will NEVER be the Rolen of old. To say he will be close is just wrong. I think if you asked pretty much any GM besides the Cards new one, they would all say he is in the "high risk" category. He is one of the best defensive 3rd basemen ever though, so even league average offensive numbers make it a plus to sign him. He just has to be healthy. I doubt Rolen plays more than 140 games though...to say he is medium to low risk isn't true. And it doesn't even matter what we think, its the perception of other GMs. If he was only medium to low risks, there would be a hell of a lot more GMs after him.

Not necessarily, 4 clubs have already came to talk about Rolen. A lot of teams at current either have cheap 3B’s who are decent players, or have stellar offensive players in the 3B position who are decent at playing 3B. The perception of a good prospect is there, as good as he was prior in ’04-’06, no, but he’ll always be better than the “standard” of 3B defense.

A lot of GM’s aren’t going after Rolen, because you can limit clubs too two standards either they don’t have the money to fork over to his salary because they are a team who builds from within, or they already have decent defensive 3B-men.

Lets break this down to the teams who are looking at him, the Giants, the Brewers and the Rangers…

Giants, Pedro Feliz, a decent offense and decent fielding, not a horrible player, but an increasing salary. I’m honestly not sure why they are trying for Rolen, but whatever.

Rangers, Ramon Vazquez, he only played 100games last season, but put-up a 230BA, 8HR, 28RBI and 69H, not great but Rolen would be an upgrade offensively, now defense; 46 put outs, a .960 FP, and 123 Assists.. Rolen would be an upgrade in there department in both aspects.

Brewers, Ryan Braun, great offensive player, however probably the worst defensive 3B there was in 2007. Without a doubt. Rolen would be a HUGE defensive bonus to there pitching staff, I’d say somewhere between 5-10 games of winning based upon the poor defense that was present at 3B. 5-10 might be to many so lets keep a range from 1 to 10 games. Rolen would be a definite upgrade in the 3B spot for the Brewers.

However none of us are Baseball GM’s. the club that would benefit the most would be between the Rangers and Brewers. I don’t really see why the Giants are in the running for Rolen unless Feliz’s contract is up but I don’t honestly remember.

Now for the Cardinals… Throw another bullpen pitcher at them, which would benefit there club. That leaves which two candidates back to the Cards, I’d like to see Mench and Capuano, but it all depends on how much of Rolen’s salary we take, the more the better player we could get. So that leaves the Cards without a 3B, with the perception that Ryan would fill it. Also an extra OF, which would we probably trade Duncan, Ankiel and/or Edmonds, to a team needing OF with either hitting, and/or a salary dump for the Cards if we traded Edmonds. Which would also give us some positional players to trade for what we want/need.

More on the Cardinals, even though the Pirates said that Wilson will not be considered in any trade, I’d still like the Cardinals to pursue Wilson and Matty Mo. This would give us 2 SS’s, however would could easily be moved to 2B, and be an upgrade to Kennedy. Also Matty Mo, would add to our SP depth, this would also benefit the Pirates with giving them a young prospect and would benefit Anthony Reyes’ career, I do see Reyes putting up better numbers with any other team other than the Cubs and Cards, our pitching coaches are too stubborn and try to make to many changes to young pitchers.

But that’s enough to gripe about in one comment, I leave this to you guys!

Melharts, your opinion or not, all of baseball see's Rolen as a high risk. To come very close to his pinnacle numbers, Rolen would be be putting up .280/.360/.500. Tag that with a great glove. If he was a low risk, teams wouldn't care about his 3 years $36 mil left on his deal. Better yet, don't you think the Cards would then keep him if that was the case? It'd be a bargain. This is not the only injury of his career and it's affected more than one year of his career. That means it's chronic. He's a big dude who suffered through back problems early in his career, a separated left shoulder, and a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

I will say this though, I won't like seeing the Cardinals get Capuano. He'll bounce back.
