Cubs Asked For Spilborghs

A note at the end of Troy Renck's column today: when the Rockies asked the Cubs about southpaw reliever Will Ohman, the Cubs asked for outfielder Ryan Spilborghs.  Spilborghs hit 11 home runs in 264 ABs this year.  The Rockies passed, and the Cubs went on to trade Ohman to the Braves.

Renck adds that the Cubs are "closing in on Kosuke Fukudome," which echoes Geoff Baker's take last night.

Why is it that with the Red Sox and Yankees failing to give up more than one of their top prospects for Santana, that the Cubs don't try to put a package together to reunite the Venezuelen countrymen. Pie, Theriot, Hart, and Hill could get it done. Then give Santana 6yr 120 mil.

I don't blame the Rockies for holding on to Spilborghs...

How is Spilborghs' defense? Is he a legitimate CF? Or is he more of a corner OF? He was a rule 5 pick not too long ago. I haven't been able to watch him play often but his offensive production is pretty good.

I'm a Cubs fan and even I wouldn't make that trade if I'm the Rockies.

As far as the Santana package the Cubs would have to put together, I just don't think we have the parts. We don't really have that super high ceiling pitching prospect and big time outfield prospects they would want. Had Pie excelled last year when he came up like Ellsbury did then perhaps we could throw something decent together, but without a blue-chip, highly known prospect to put in a deal at this point there is no way to make it happen.

What about Hill\Colvin\Marmol? Hill fills the SP void (kind of, he is no Santana), Colvin is a real good OF prospect, and Marmol lets them trade Nathan without a problem and gives them a cheap alternative for years. I think that might have gotten the deal done, with maybe another B prospect as well. Maybe not...but who knows. With ownership though, there is no way they could commit another 120 million...

"Pie, Theriot, Hart, and Hill could get it done"

Hah, good idea, trade away 4 players who each could start this year for the big league club

Funny stuff.

The Cubs already have a better Ryan Spilborghs, but they don't want to play him since he stands in the wrong batter's box.

Spilborghs would've been great value for Ohman, but you still gotta wonder what Hendry had in mind here.
