Mets Sign Matt Wise

According to MetsBlog, the Mets have inked reliever Matt Wise to a one-year deal.  Seems solid, adds some depth.  Wise gets $1.2MM if he makes the Opening Day roster.

Wise, 32, joins his third organization.  He's good for 50-60 innings and decent command, though his groundball rate really dropped off in '07.

For those Mets fans keeping score, we have only one more spot in the roster to fill. I am by my phone waiting to get that call from Omar.

Yes!!! This is the big splash ive been waiting for. This realy solves all of our01 problems. What do they do with Ambiorix Burgos now, im confidante he can dominate. Thoughts???

If he can return to his pre-beanball-to-the-head form, this is a great deal for Omar.

Hell, it's a great deal anyway.

Brewers fans... are you expecting more from Mota than you got from Wise?

He was one of the guys on my list that I wanted the Mets to sign. Good job Omar (finally...)...

Well, that was just another brilliant bullpen signing. We should call Anthony Young and see if he wants to be our 7th inning guy.

Yeeah dawg dat's wut i'm talkin' bout! Dis signing's real fly!

Matt Wise was a fair beast in 2005. 3.36 ERA, 62 Ks in 64.1 frames of work. Solid. Real solid.

Actually, if this move was made to see if Heilman will compete for the 5th spot in the roatation, then I am not so upset about it, I guess.

Only Mets fans could get excited about the signing of a declining middle reliever.

Sorry to ruin the party Mets fans, but having watch Wise many, many, many games last year, I am happy too see him gone...sure, he posted decent numbers in 200-2006, but he was pitching in innings of games in which the Brewers were either winning big, or losing big...he cant handle the pressure. And as someone noted, ever since he beaned that guy in the head, he went from being OK to awful..he had no command or confidence. Not to mention, he once went on the DL because of a salad tongs incident....but, if he can give you a couple solid innings, it will prolly be worth his low price. He made like 1 mill with the Brew so assuming the same with the Mets

wow that guy stole me name my

i mean "wow that guy stole my name"*

2 pitch guy - upper 80's fastball and a change. Problem he had last year was that he lost a couple mph on the high side and his change sped up. Count me as someone who really liked him with the Brewers - but in honesty, even at his best he was skating by with full on finesse and guile. Now that the stuff has started going what's left? A guy with two "fastballs."

Let's see, Mota has only been good when on roids, Wise has only been terrible after beaning a guy in the head.

Unless Mota can sneak some roids, he'll suck. Unless Wise can clear his head, he'll suck.

They will probably both suck (because they aren't Cubs of course) but Wise has a better chance of being halfway decent.

not a terrible pick up for the mets...if the price was low it will be a good signing...he only has 2 pitches...slow and slower...but if he can control those pitches...he might be able to get by...

Wise was always a good 7th inning man for the Brewers. When he struggled last year after Beaning the guy in the jaw..thats when the whole Bullpen imploded. He has a great changeup that if working will get anyone out.

A person asked if we will expect more from Mota... Mota will be our 7th or 8th Bullpen arm out of the pen..(if we carry 12 or 13 pitchers). When Wise lost his head he was our 3rd bullpen arm...after Cordero and Turnbow. We lost the valuable innings he could pitch after his head was messed up.

Because of that it pushed guys like Spurling and McClung up an extra spot in the bullpen.

oh and one last thing
He also had problems pitching back to back..and sometimes needed 2 days rest between outings.

I wish him the best of luck..but I will take a question mark that throws the ball 95+mph... over a question mark that throws it 84 Mph

I like the pickup, cheap, and adds depth. Low risk. I trust Omar pretty much when it comes to the pen. Flyball pitchers flourish pitching in Shea. Just keep signing arms and give them a shot, and see who sticks. In 2006, the Mets had an awesome bullpen that consisted of Chad Bradford, Feliciano, Duaner Sanchez, Aaron Heilman, Darren Oliver, and Billy Wagner. Nobody thought they would be any good at all, and they dominated. Its all just about finding arms, and hoping to get lucky, because bullpens are a crapshoot. I love Wise's changeup also.

I completely agree with nrmax88
