« Vote For MLBTR | Main | Darin Erstad Signs With Astros »
Bill Center of the San Diego Union-Tribune has more details on Mark Prior's contract and suitors.
Prior cited the Astros, Cardinals, Mets, and Rangers as the most aggressive; about half the teams in baseball contacted his agent.
Contract details: it has a $1MM base with another possible $3.5MM in incentives. However, much of the incentive money is tied to the number of starts he makes, so he'll probably end up earning $3MM or less in 2008.
How bad was the shoulder injury? How far along is Prior in his rehab? I've talked to some people and read published reports and am unable to draw any consistent conclusion. Rick Wilton of Baseball Injury Report thinks the chance of a meaningful contribution from Prior in '08 is close to zero. Others are a bit more optimistic, but we'll just have to wait and see.

I heard that something like 2 mil or so was based on him making 30 starts. There is a better chance of Nolan Ryan pitching 30 starts next year than Mark Prior.

Prior had some interesting quotes yesterday, the forefront being his comment that an option year would be unfair to both side. Just tossing that out there. By the way, Tim, it's $4.5mm in incentives, right? That was your last report.

I wonder if the Padres will alow him to wear a skirt.
Please. No more Prior details until he can actually pitch

Center says $3.5MM in incentives, Olney said $4.5MM.

Not sure how an option year could be thought to be unfair on both sides. I understand how the usual club option might be but not sure how a player option would. Please explain.
CLUB OPTION: I understand how to Prior, who probably views this contract as his chance to put together a healthy season, thereby raising his contract value by year's end, could be losing money if he agreed to a club option now at such a reduced price.
PLAYER OPTION: I am not sure how this scenario would be unfair to the Padres so much. If Prior reached a IP mark and vested a player option, then the Pads might be locked into paying Prior for another season. Though such a season would probably be for a similar amount of money, and, if Prior did somehow manage to reach 20-30 starts, I'd think it would be considered a pretty successful campaign in and of itself.

Mlbcontracts.blogspot.com has him at 1 million + 4.5 in incentives. Not sure if he's basing that just on what Olney said or if he has his own sources. Just thought i'd throw this out there though since that's where i go for contract information :)

I love Cot's I think they stick with published info. It's got to be one of the two, anyway.

How about we kill the dull and outplayed "Mark Prior is a girl" variations first?

When we hear "Mark Prior is a cabbage" comments I think that means we are bored and starved for actual news.

I'm bummed, as a Mets fan I would've been happy to get Prior. At least he'd represent a glimmer of hope at midseason. Oh well. I guess we can look forward to Juan Padilla or Livan Hernandez.

Sorry WestCoastBias. I've watched this act for years. The man talks a good game, but I've seen him take himself out of a game in the first inning with what looks like a career ending arm injury, only to pronounce himself fine for his next start. I'll stop with the references when he actually makes 5 starts in a row.
