« Odds and Ends: Peavy, Ellsbury, Montero, Fukumori | Main | Johan Santana Rumors: Tuesday »
MLB.com's Corey Brock says the Padres made a preliminary offer to Kosuke Fukudome for three years. His source indicates it could be for around $24MM, but the Padres have some flexibility on that. As you know, Fukudome wants exactly three years on his deal. I wouldn't be surprised to see it climb to $36MM.
The Padres were also said to be close to a deal for Luke Scott, but it seems that deal died.

24 million? As a Cubs fan, I scoff. Haven't we cleared 24 million in salary of traded players alone?
(Yes, i know this is an exaggeration, but between Jones, Infante, Ohman, it is something like eight million, which is one year of that contract)

speaking of salary clearings you should note that trachsel didn't get resigned , munroe was traded and hopefully the cubs can find a buyer for prior w/o the cubs taking on most of his salary . i'm more worried he is going to stay in japan than not signing with the cubs .

I'm positive we were ready to pay 3/30 so.
Between Infante/Jones/Ohman, it is about $4M a year we saved counting some cash we threw towards the Tigers. That doesn't matter though because Hendry said the salary could go up to $125M this year and we are $105M or so. I'm sure we will outbid Fukudome because we don't need a starter at any other position except RF. We could upgrade at 2B and SS, but Theriot and DeRosa bring a lot of heart to the club and are at least playing average baseball.
The bullpen is 100% solid. I'm not sure you will find a better on in baseball. The rotation could use an upgrade, but we are talking about the team that finished 4th in MLB in ERA. We don't need to go out and sign Carlos Silva to 4/40 so we can throw alot towards Fukudome.

WJ, those guys were on the Cubs for two seconds. We paid maybe $1M to them total.

true cubs fan , my bad . i do think that hendry will end up spending a bit much on fukudome (3yrs/40 million)which should leaves the cubs with enough to either get another left hander for right field , upgrade in the infield , or starting pitching . i was hoping the cubs would have dealt marquis and prior by now to make more room for something bigger but i don't think it's going to happen . i think the cubs are stuck with marquis .

it must be nice to be able to throw money around without a care in the world....
what is wrong with murton? he deserves a starting chance! teams that block prospects will always lose.

Dude Murton is right handed. You cant have a team with all right handed bats 1 thru 8. And he can't run in center. So we move Sori and his canon arm? I laugh at the thought. HA HA
