Ken Rosenthal has the scoop - the Royals have signed southpaw reliever Ron Mahay to a two-year, $8MM deal. Nice move by Dayton Moore getting him for less than the Phillies paid for J.C. Romero, an inferior pitcher.
Mahay is 36, though many readers pointed out to me that he converted to pitching late in life (when he was 25 or so). However - and I can't find the link the moment - Will Carroll has found position player converts to be at greater injury risk.
The Royals are three-deep with lefty relievers, so maybe they'll shop Jimmy Gobble or John Bale now. Mahay had been a Yankee target, so perhaps they'll move on to Damaso Marte.
Mahay was a Type B, so the Braves receive a sandwich pick for their loss (not at the Royals' expense).

Unbeleivable. $4MM per for a 36 year-old middle reliever. And there's no uproar. Yet a younger and proven setup man like Linebrink signs for $750,000 more for two extra years and everybody's bitching. Sheesh.

"though many relievers pointed out to me"
Lots of relievers reading the blog these days?
And Astra, if it makes you feel better, I think they're both awful deals. Obviously the extra 2 years makes Linebrink's worse, but 2 years and $8MM for a guy with a sub 2.0 K/BB and a 6.81 ERA in his recent history is pretty dumb as well.

yea those position players to pitchers always get hurt. i mean just look at how horrible and unreliable (physically speaking) trever hoffmans career has been...

I'm going to trust you're smart enough to know one example doesn't disprove a general point and your comment was sarcastic.

For what it's worth,I've heard a radio interview with Dr. James Andrews, the notable sports physician from Birmingham, Al., say that converted field players have a much higher arm and shoulder injury risk. Usually it's within the first few years after the conversion, though.

Brandon Backe is a good example, Carroll's info wasn't pulled out of his arse after all. I will try to find the link.
And yes, the Linebrink signing is much worse than this.

Moore may well deal Gobble or Bale (most likely Gobble), but Bale may end up getting a turn as a starter as well.

does anyone else laugh a little bit when they read the name jimmy gobble?
and yes, brandon backe is a very good example of that. as an astros fan (a fan of the team, not so much the front office the last 3-4 years), i'm hoping he stays healthy. watching him pitch game 5 of the nlcs v the cardinals a few years ago was one of the best things i've ever seen...hope he returns to form, houston needs him to.

Mahay converted in the minors, I believe in Trenton while he was in the Red Sox organization. It's been quite a while now.
