« Rockies Close On Kip Wells, Pursuing Vizcaino | Main | Odds and Ends: Mench, Kent, Durbin, Wang »
During the Winter Meetings, there wasn't much talk of the Indians or Reds pursuing Oakland starter Dan Haren. However, there's buzz that both Ohio teams have interest.
The Tribe definitely inquired on Haren. See Susan Slusser's article today, where she notes that Asdrubal Cabrera was "believed to be an A's target." The Indians don't want to part with the young infielder, a player they stole from the Mariners in June of 2006 for Eduardo Perez. Paul Hoynes further solidifies it, saying Mark Shapiro has spoken to Billy Beane about Haren.
Slusser believes the Reds "might turn their focus toward Haren with an offer that could include starter Homer Bailey" if they can't get Erik Bedard. Slusser's report is unclear whether Wayne Krivsky has had conversations with Billy Beane about Haren. Ken Rosenthal says the Reds are "pushing for Haren," which does indicate talks.

I think that Haren would be better financially from the Reds standpoint then Bedard.
He is relatively cheap the next 2 years, but he is a right hander.
Nevertheless, if the Reds can make the deal without giving up Bruce, You do it. We ought to try to get Dunn in the deal and just tell the A's not to worry about Barry Bonds

For all you Krivsky bashers, and I've heard a lot of you over the last couple years on talk radio, kiss my a$$.
Even if we don't get Haren or Bedard, we're heavily in the mix. It's a fun offseason for once as a Red's fan. My money's on Krivdog to get a frontline guy and still keep Bruce. It may be costly, but so what. I like Bailey, Hamilton, and Votto, but if two of the three and others nets you another frontline guy (yes, Harang is an ace) get it done.
Cubs fans, Cubs fans, Cubs fans. Fukudome is going to bring the ring?..doubtful. Your pitching isn't good enough to win a World Series. Heck, you barely won the worst division in baseball last year and got waxed in the first round. You guys are the kings of the January World Championship.

p.s.-Please take Dunn, please. Let us roll with Hamilton and Bruce in the same outfield for the next 5 or 6.

What place did you finish in? What was your record? Are you really bashing Cubs fan for....well, no reason whatsoever in the wrong thread? Wow...

Why do all these Reds fans hate on Dunn...who else has put up 40 HRs a year for you the last 5 years? He's a big part of your offense, why would you want to trade that away along with a future stud in Homer. It'd be ok if the Reds got Bedard because he'd be a CY candidate the next 2 years in a Reds uniform. Harang/Bedard scares me more than Harang/Haren.

Although I would love a rotation of Sabathia, Haren, Carmona, Westbrook and Byrd, I don't think we should trade away Cabrera. Asdrubal was a spark-plug for the team last year and trading him away would open a huge hole at 2B (especially since Barfield has shown an inability to hit consistently.)
How about a package of with some combination of Lee, Miller, Gutierrez, Laffey, Marte or Shoppach? I think 2/3 of these players is fair compensation.
Coincidentally, despite Barfield's struggles, you would think there would be some trade interest in him?

Going for Haren would be a great idea for the Reds. The A's are ot of it and have no chance, I would love to get Haren, but I wouldnt want to give up bruce.
Id be willing to give up bruce if i got two Haren AND one of Blanton/Harden.
Im not saying those two for Bruce straight up, but a package of 3 top prospects and 1-2 B prospects could be workable, and As dont like Harden too much, even thought he would be a risk.
Harang
Haren
Arroyo
Blanton/Harden
Cueto/Bailey/Belisle
I dont think I would give up both Cueto and bailey, but the Return WOULD be high.
We could trade our young hitters because we wouldnt be trading all of them, would still have BP, EE, and we could extend Dunn, and its much easier to find productive hitters at GABP than pitchers on the FA market.

Not trying to compare the Reds to the Cubs...we've been terrible for too long for that. My best friend is a huge Cubs fan, and I swear every offseason for 10 years you guys are going to win the Series. The Cubs do have probably the best fan base in baseball, maybe in sports. Much better than the majority of Cincinnati sports fans. The comment was probably too strong, my apologies. I still think pitching is the Cubs issue, not a RF.
Dunn is a DH in the wrong league. His work ethic sucks, so he's content to be completely one dimensional and pick up his check. He's not a leader, and on a team with a $70 mil payroll you need him to be. He's hung around Jr. too long. He can't hit cleanup, and the Reds actually started taking him out of games late last year until he cried to the owner about it.
Personally I'll take the hit in OBP and SLG to get a better all around player. I think the homers are overrated. 106 rbi's, career high. There are guys with a lot less homers with more rbi's. Which would you consider more important?

The Reds HAVE to find a legitimate leadoff hitter. If we go into next season with Scott Hatteberg hitting leadoff again, I'm going to scream.
I would only give up Dunn in a deal if that means you keep Hamilton.
Next year when Griffey is off the books, you can put Bruce, Hamilton, Stubbs in the outfield and be set for 10 years+.
As it is, if you can get rid of Dunn in the deal, try and sign Cameron to a 1 year incentive laden deal, let him hit leadoff, and give Stubbs another year of seasoning before expecting him to be ready in 2009.
As for Bailey/Cueto, if you have to give one up to get Haren or Bedard, do it. Beane is going to ask for Bruce obviously but you CANNOT give him up.

Madrid, I agree that AsCab would be a big loss. Given Barfield's struggles, I can't imagine him being as valuable as AsCab right now. Even though Barfield had such a great 2006 year, AsCab came out of nowhere to play a big role in the Indians' playoff run. If a player from the 25 man roster is wanted, only Laffey, Guit and Shoppach fit that bill. None of them could be a centerpiece of a deal like AsCab / Adam Miller would be.

I don't think the Red's will give up Votto and Hamilton, but could be wrong.
I'm also very skeptical if Stubbs will ever hit at the major league level. They say he's ready defensively, but I don't want another 100 strikeout guy on this team.
I kind of like Hopper playing quasi-everyday. Call me crazy.
