« Indians Rumors: Haren, Blanton, Bedard, Inge | Main | Kosuke Fukudome Projections »
On November 29th, ESPN's Jerry Crasnick mentioned that the Cubs are "listening on Jason Marquis." This would clearly be a salary dump, as Marquis will earn $16.25MM over 2008-09.
Since then we haven't heard of any teams interested in the 29 year-old righty. However, Mets manager Willie Randolph brought up Marquis yesterday as a consideration for the team's rotation. The article's author, Adam Rubin, added that the Cubs are fans of Endy Chavez. It wouldn't be fair to equate the two players, however.
Hat tip to MetsBlog on this one.

and here comes the mets fans on saying Omar better not do this...this thread will have about 100 or so posts i bet lol..but Mets will be dumb to trade for Marquis..they dotn need him

The two players aren't equatable because Endy's a hell out a lot more valuable than Marquis.
Posted by: nom3k | December 12, 2007 at 01:54 PM
Im a cubs fan and would make that trade strait up. I would even throwin a mill.
Posted by: clarknaddison | December 12, 2007 at 01:55 PM
Marquis is an ok 5th starter....just not for 7.5 mill....
Posted by: clarknaddison | December 12, 2007 at 01:56 PM
Hell no.. Just sign Livan Hernandez if it comes to that.. Marquis is horrible, and Endy Chavez is a very valuable bench player, especially in our situation (with Alou)

@Larsen101
It could be worse - they could be Yankees fans. They would say how they don't need him - until they get him, then he'd be the best pitcher in the world not named Hughes, Chamberlain, or Kennedy.
And they'd provide stats to back it up, too.

Cubs fan here not interested in Chavez. I'd rather have the pitching, regardless of cost. Chavez would signal less time for Pie in CF, which I don't agree with.
Granted, even if it's a dump you'd still waste a roster space on Chavez which wouldn't improve anything. Even if you bump Marquis from the rotation you could still use him for spot starts/swingman andd get some value out of him.
Posted by: Dave | December 12, 2007 at 02:03 PM
Yeah us silly yankee fans, backing things up with stats. Huh?
Posted by: Simmy Cohen | December 12, 2007 at 02:03 PM
o hell no
dont do it omar go after hill or a left handed pitcher
Posted by: iknowtomuch | December 12, 2007 at 02:29 PM
Marquis is a decent #4 or #5 depending on the rotation. The Mets could do better or worse.
Posted by: Oh Boy | December 12, 2007 at 02:31 PM
Forget Hill, he's going nowhere.
Posted by: Oh Boy | December 12, 2007 at 02:32 PM
"The two players aren't equatable because Endy's a hell out a lot more valuable than Marquis."
That is implied by the article and my post, no?
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | December 12, 2007 at 02:43 PM
That trade is not going to happen. As a Cub fan, I'd jump on it. Omar can't be that dumb.
Posted by: Oh Boy | December 12, 2007 at 02:48 PM
How is a platoon/backup OFer more valuable than a legitamate, if overpaid back of the rotation guy?
Just curious.
Posted by: Dave | December 12, 2007 at 03:11 PM
I doubt Omar would make that trade straight up. Their would have to be cash going to NY I would think.
Posted by: Oh Boy | December 12, 2007 at 03:22 PM
I have been reading Metsblog and people are saying they feel it would be a good trade. I am a HUGE Cubs fan and if there is any way we can get rid of Marquis straight up for Endy I would go nuts! To dump that salary and him would be awesome. We just need another pitcher then...
Posted by: dus22 | December 12, 2007 at 03:28 PM
Oh, I would do it, too. I just don't think Omar would go for it.
Posted by: Oh Boy | December 12, 2007 at 03:32 PM
This deal would seem to be in favor of the Cubs. However, I've got to imagine a guy who's thrown over 190 IP each of the last three seasons seems valuable to a rotation that has Pedro and El Duque. Seems that would be the reason behind Omar even thinking about this deal. Didn't work out too badly for the Cubs last year. Plus it either replaces the deal for Roberts if the asking price is too high or gives Cubs a little leverage there.

If the Mets were so desperate for a scrub like Marquis, they could just let Pelfrey and/or Humber start, or sign a guy like Livan or Colon.
No need to give up a supersub like Endy.

Im pretty sure Omar gonna do this trade. You know what Omar gonna covert him to catcher b/c there pretty low on catchers and he might be the best hitting catcher.
Posted by: braves077 | December 12, 2007 at 04:36 PM
good one braves077. That was absurdly funny right there.....
Anyway, dont take anything the posters on Mets blog say. I have been trying to talk some sense into them for a while, but they are a bunch of whiney little babies. 80 percent of the posts over there are something like...." omg fire omar this is horrible how could u pass up martinez, gomez, pelfrey, humber, guerra, mulvey, pena and heilman for santana!!!"
Or
"get it done omar or I swear to god I wont come to any games."
They also all seem to think that Santana wants to play only for the Mets.
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 12, 2007 at 05:14 PM
The real problem is that most of the Mets prospects just aren't that valuable. The only 4 guys that I feel have geniunely good trade value are Martinez, Gomez, Guerra and Mulvey. Humber and Pelfrey's stock has plummeted. Don't blame Omar because your prospects are all disappointing everyone. If he traded away these guys and they busted out, everyone would bash the hell out of him, even though that's exactly what they wanted in the first place.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 12, 2007 at 05:25 PM
Yup, thats pretty much how it is. If the Mets wait a year, F-Mart and Guerra could be top prospects. I cringe thinking of trading Guerra, an 18 year old 6'5 kid who pumps mid 90's heat right now and throws a dirty changeup already. I agree, Guerra, F-Mart0 Gomez and Pena are all huge upside guys. Mulvey to me seems like a middle to back end guy, but he seems like a solid bet to contribute in the show sooner rather then later. My point is though, a year from now Guerra and F-Mart could be the equivolant of this years Kemp/ Kershaw.
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 12, 2007 at 06:03 PM
Yeah, Martinez and Guerra are both very young, and are ranked 1-2 in BA's top 10 Mets prospects for 2008. Martinez is 19 and was the #22 prospect in baseball last season as an 18 year old. Guerra turns 19 in April, and Pena is 17. Essentially, the Mets' best prospects are all extremely young, extremely talented, and pretty raw. None of those guys are close to being MLB-ready, but they all have unreal potential.

The mets seem to be pretty solid at developing raw guys (see: Jose Reyes) so I really think trading any of Guerra, F-Mart, or Gomez is a bad idea, however if getting rid of one means getting Bedard or Johan, I would be fine with dealing one of the OF's (I REALLY wouldn't want to part with Guerra unless something beyond belief was offered)

Oh please, Oh please, Oh please, Oh please! I know the Cubs don't have a starting rotation to win it all (yet!)... But, I'd happily take Chavez for Marquis and a couple cases of Old Style. He's an inning eater, but doesn't seem to be in the good graces of Lou (or any other pitching coach/manager that he's worked with in the past). I hate to say it, for fear of flipping out fellow Cubs fans, but I'd like to see one of our young kids take the #5 slot... Marshall, Galleghar, Hart - if they're not moved for other players. Know anybody interested in Dempster?

Whatever the Mets do doesn't matter because they always will suck.
